Escape from the jungle


It was Christmas Eve 1971.A film director called Werner Herzog was at the airport in Lima,
Peru.1_______Herzog waited for the next flight and the plne took off from the airport without him.A few
minutes later, it crashed into the jungle.There was only one survivor- a 17- old German girl called
Juliane Koepke. 2_____
When the plane crashed, Juliane fell through the trees and landed on the ground.She woke up 24
hours later.3______She knew that she needed to get out of the jungle.Juliane didnt have the right
clothes for a journey like this- she had a miniskirts!-but she knew a lot about the jungle. Her parents
were scientists.They studied the jungle in Peru, and the jungle was Julianes home when she was a

When she found water, she followed it and soon came to a river.She knew that there were often
villages near a river.But it wasnt an easy journey for her.5 ______She often had to walk or swim
through dangerous water, full of crocodiles.People flew over in small planes to look for survivors from
the accident.

Rebecca Stevens was the first woman to climb Mount Everest.Before she went up the highest mountain in
the world, she was a journalist and lived in a small flat in south London.
In 1993, Rebecca left her job and her family and travelled to Asia with some climbers.She found that life
on Everest is hard.You must carry everything on your back, she explained, so you can only take things
that you will need.You cant wash on the mountain, and in the end and I didnt even take a toothbrush. I am

usually a clean person but there is no water, only snow.Water is very heavy so you only take enough to
drink.
When Rebecca reached the top of Mount Everest on May 17 1993, it was the best moment of her
life.Suddenly she became famous.
Now she has written a book about the trip and people often ask her to talk about it.She has a new job too,
on a science programme on television.
Rebecca is well known today and she has more money, but she still lives in the little flat in south London
among her pictures and books about mountains!

The population of the USA is 285 million.It is 72% white, 12% black, 12% Hispanic (e.g from Mexico and
Cuba) and 3.6 % Asian. There are also two million Native Americans.
In the distant past (about 20.000 years ago), people came from North Asia and settled in North
America.They became Native Americans.Europeans started arriving in the fifteenth century.
During the past 200 years, people from all over the world have come to the USA.Between 1850 and 1930,
over 25 million immigrants left Europe and settled in the USA.They brought customs and traditions from
their own countries, and many of these continue today.Irish americans in New York celebrate St Patricks
Day every year on 17 March.And every September, Italian Americans in New York have an eleven-day
festival to celebrate the Feast of San Gennaro.
