90 Years on
It was in 1914 that a small
jamaat without the support of
rich kings and businessmen decided to set out on a venture
which, depending on ones point
of view, only the very brave or
foolhardy would undertake. The
venture was to build the first
mosque on the European mainland and to propagate Islam from
it. Lack of resources, money,
men, language and literature did
not seem to deter them.
They had sworn an oath to
hold their religion above tem-

poral considerations. When faced by such

challenges they did not hesitate, they took
action. First, they fell to the ground before Allah and pleaded for His help. They
did not fall before people of this world
for help. Second, they took a decision by
mutual consent where everyone knew the
objective and the path to be traversed to
that objective. And, last, they marched
forth. The obstacles they faced were tremendous, climbing the Everest without
Oxygen or the Gobi desert without water. But Allah was with them and that was
all that mattered.
Building the Berlin mosque was one
such venture. They only had faith but faith
was all they needed. They had the example of the 300 who, without adequate
arms, marched out to face an enemy 4
times bigger. And so they sent one man,
Hazrat Maulana Sadr ud Din, to accomplish. He did not know German or the
Germans. He had few financial resources.
But he had faith that the mosque will be
built and built, it was.

The last weekend of October

was devoted to celebrating this
great achievement. People from
Suriname, UK, Holland, Austria,
Portugal and Pakistan attended the
jalsa, in addition to those from
Germany. Overseas guests started
arriving early to help with arrangements for the convention. A large
number of rooms in an hotel nearby were booked for guests because
the mission house was overcrowded.
