Welcome to 1Password
1Password creates strong, unique passwords for every site, remembers them all for you, and logs you in with
a single tap. Its the best way to stay secure and the fastest way to use the web. Additionally, 1Password can
store almost anything you want kept safe, like credit card and bank information. We even have Secure Notes,
where you can store any text youd like.
Everything in your 1Password vault is protected by a password only you know: your Master Password. All
you need to do is remember your Master Password. 1Password will remember the rest.

Setting Up 1Password
The first time you use 1Password youll be taken through our Quick Tour. Youll swipe through a few slides
to learn more about some of 1Passwords key features before reaching the Master Password slide.
Your Master Password is used to secure all your data. This means that your Master Password should be
strong and unique. It also important to choose a memorable password because you wont be able to access
Page 5 of 127
AgileBits
your data without it! We dont store passwords and cannot help you retrieve your Master Password if you
forget it.
Tip: How to Choose a Master Password has some advice for creating strong, memorable passwords.
Once youve entered in your Master Password and its hint, youll see the Security slide, where you will tailor
the way 1Password auto-locks.
Auto-lock keeps your data secure when you are not using 1Password. You can set it to be more aggressive
and lock after only a minute or two, or you can set it to be more lenient and lock after a longer period of time.
Auto-lock after allows you to decide how long 1Password can be open and unused before it locks. If you
turn on Lock on exit, 1Password will lock every time you leave the app.
We recommend you keep the default auto-lock settings while youre learning how to use 1Password. You can
always change your settings later in 1Passwords security settings.
The final Quick Tour slide will help you configure syncing. Syncing allows you to access your data no matter
where youre using 1Password. It is also an easy way to have a backup of your 1Password data if you ever
need to reinstall 1Password. See Sync with iCloud and Sync with Dropbox for more information. If you want
to start using 1Password before you sync, just tap on Ill sync later, lets go!

What do you do if you want to keep your personal and work information kept apart, share logins with a team
of people, or keep an archive of old information you dont use anymore? Use different vaults for different
purposes!
Note: New vaults must be created from either 1Password 4 for Windows or Mac. Once a vault is created and
synced to your iOS device, you can use it the same way you use your primary vault.
These screenshots are from the iPhone version of 1Password, but the steps are the same on an iPad!
Demo Vault
If youd like to show 1Password to other people without letting them see your items, you can create a demo
vault. From the Vaults screen, tap Settings > Add Vault > Create Demo Vault, then give a tour of 1Password

If you need to change your Master Password, set up a PIN Code, or change your auto-lock settings, the
Security section is where you want to be!
These screenshots are from the iPhone version of 1Password, but the steps are the same on an iPad!
Lock Now
Tap on Lock Now to immediately lock 1Password.
If you have a PIN set up, using this method to lock 1Password will require you to enter your Master Password
the next time you unlock the app, after which your PIN will work normally.
AgileBits
Note: You will be taken back to Security Settings after your Master Password has successfully been changed
on this device. It may take a few minutes for your new Master Password to sync to your other devices.
Request After
Tap on Request After to change how long 1Password can be open and unused before it locks. If you carry
your iOS device with you wherever you go, you may want 1Password to lock sooner. On the other hand, if
your iOS device is always in a safe location, you may want 1Password to lock after a longer period of time.
Additionally, people often choose a shorter period of time for this setting during vacations.
Lock on Exit
Activating Lock on Exit will require you to enter your Master Password (or PIN, if you have one set up) any
time you leave 1Password by going to your home screen, switching to another app, or locking your device.
PIN Code
Switch on PIN Code to require a 4-digit PIN instead of your Master Password to unlock 1Password. After its
set up, you will be required to enter your Master Password if you ever enter your PIN incorrectly. If youd like
more in-depth information about how PINs work, please read iOS PIN Code Design.
Note: To ensure the security of your data, we recommend that you only use a PIN code with 1Password if
you have a passcode set up on your device. Your 1Password PIN and iOS passcode should not be the same.
AgileBits
When PIN Code is turned on, the following options will be added to the Security Settings screen:
Change PIN Code lets you enter a new 4-digit PIN Code.
Request Code After changes how long 1Password can be open and unused before it must be
unlocked using your PIN Code.
Clear Clipboard
Tap on Clear Clipboard to select how long the information you copy from 1Password is available to be
pasted. By default, your information will never be cleared, but you may decide that you dont want your
passwords and other sensitive information hanging out on your clipboard for very long.

Settings: Sync
Syncing allows you to access your data on all of your devices with 1Password installed. It is also an easy
way to have a backup of your 1Password data, just in case.
These screenshots are from the iPhone version of 1Password, but the steps are the same on an iPad!
Because you can only log into one vault at a time on iOS, the sync options in the Settings Tab only apply to
the vault youre currently using. Each vaults sync settings are independent, which means you dont have to
use the same syncing method for every vault. Please see Adding, Switching, and Removing Vaults to learn
how to switch to your other vaults.
Currently, 1Password can sync using:
iCloud, which works with iPhones, iPads, and Macs
Note: iCloud sync is not available for Android or Windows
Dropbox, which works with all of your devices that run 1Password
Wi-Fi
AgileBits
iTunes
Note: When syncing, it can take several minutes for changes to reach other devices.
Setting Up Sync
To set up sync for the first time, Tap on Settings > Sync > Start Syncing. You can then tap on the sync
method youd like to use.
For sync setup instructions specific to each sync service please read the Sync with iCloud, Sync with
Dropbox, Sync with WiFi, or Sync with iTunes articles.
AgileBits
Note: 1Password only supports one sync method at a time per vault. If you want to switch from one sync
method to another, 1Password will prompt you to disable your existing sync method before enabling the new
one. This is normal; none of your 1Password data will be lost.
Disabling Sync
If youd like to stop syncing your data, tap Settings > Sync > Sync Service > Disable Sync. You will be
asked to confirm that you would like to Disable Sync. Disabling sync will not delete any of your data; a copy
of the vault for which you disabled sync will remain on both your device and on the service you were syncing
with. However, changes to one copy of your vault will not be reflected in the other until sync is enabled again.
Forcing Sync
If youd like to force your data to sync right away, you can do so by tapping Settings > Sync > Sync Now.

as a Credit Card Item, and so on.

Generating Passwords
One of the top reasons to use 1Password is so that you can have hard-to-crack passwords without having
to memorize them. But how do you come up with strong passwords? Easy! Just use our built-in password
generator.
The screenshots shown below are from the iPhone version of 1Password, but the steps are the same on an
iPad!
Step 1
You can generate a password for any item with a Password field. When viewing an items details or creating
a new item, simply tap on the key outline to the right of the Password field. A shiny new password will appear!
If youd like to adjust its length, simply slide your finger to the left or right.
Step 2
AgileBits
You might want to customize your new password beyond changing its length. To do so, just tap on Show
Password Recipe and move the sliders and switches around until you have a password tailored to meet your
needs.
The Digits slider controls how many numbers appear in your password. Frequently, companies
require that passwords have at least one number.
The Symbols slider controls how many symbols (like #?@*$+=) appear in your password. Its a good
idea to include some symbols in passwords to make them strong; however, sometimes companies
dont allow anything other than letters and numbers in passwords.
Avoid ambiguity, when switched on, will prevent characters that can be visually confused from being
used in your generated password. Examples of ambiguous characters are 0 and O as well as l,
1, and I.
Allow repeats, when switched on, will allow the generator to create a password where the same
character appears more than once.
Copy to clipboard, when switched on, will automatically copy your password to your clipboard so you
can use it right away.
