CGS-SQUARE Fellowship

About CGS-SQUARE Fellowship


Centre for Genocide Studies (CGS), University of Dhaka, has been
working on the history and genocide committed during the War of
Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971. The scope of CGS is not
confined to the genocide committed in Bangladesh; rather it also
studies war crimes, crimes against humanity and other forms of
human rights violations elsewhere in the world. It is a pioneer of its
kind in Bangladesh and South Asia.
SQUARE Group is one of the leading business enterprises in
Bangladesh whose excellence transcended the borders of the
country. It is also a pioneer in healthcare sector in Bangladesh and

Centre for Genocide Studies, with generous endowment from
SQUARE Group, will be offering the CGS- SQUARE Fellowship.
Fellowship Preference
The fellowship will be awarded mainly to Bangladeshi applicants who
demonstrate outstanding potentials and can contribute in such
areas as genocide, war crime, crime against humanity, human
rights, ethnic and communal violence and other related themes.
CGS welcomes proposals in three distinct areas: dissertation,
research, documentary, including photography, that are relevant to
these themes.

Duration of Fellowship
The fellowship will be offered to six awardees each year. In total,
eighteen awardees will be offered fellowship in 2015-2017.

Categories of Fellowship
The fellowship will be offered in three categories:
1. PhD Research
2. Senior Fellow
3. Junior Fellow

Eligibility requirements for PhD Research

Fellowship in this criteria will cover fieldwork only.

The individual ought to be a current PhD student (anywhere in the


world).

The subject of the research must be in the areas mentioned


above.

Eligibility Requirements for Senior Fellow

Applicants must be 40 years or above

Individuals must have completed their PhDs (applicants who


recently submitted their PhD dissertation but are yet to get the
degree will not be considered).

CGS-SQUARE Fellowship

Candidate

must

have

demonstrated

outstanding

scholastic

achievement and ability to complete the project successfully.

The proposal ought to be relevant to areas mentioned above.

Eligibility requirements for Junior Fellow

Individual applicants must be below 40 years.

Applicants should ideally have a Masters degree in any discipline


from a reputed university. But priority would be given to graduates
from International Relations, Political Science, Peace and Conflict
Studies, Law, History, Sociology, Anthropology, Women and
Gender Studies, Literature, Psychology and other disciplines
related to issues of genocide and mass violence.

Individuals should be able to demonstrate excellent track record.

The proposal ought to be relevant to areas mentioned above.

Value of Fellowship Award


The fellowship will be awarded to six applicants each year: one PhD
researcher to support fieldwork, two Senior Fellows, and three Junior
Fellows.The value of the award given each year is as follows:

BDT 1,50,000 for one PhD researcher to support for fieldwork.

BDT 75,000 each for two Senior Fellows.

BDT 50,000 each for three Junior Fellows.

CGS-SQUARE Fellowship

Selection Process
Fellowships will be awarded based on the relevance of the theme as well
as on their merits. A selection panel nominated by CGS will initially
review the applications and only shortlisted applicants will be called in for
interview. The decision of CGS will be final in awarding the fellowship.
