1.0 Introduction to Peak Well Services

Peak Well Services Pty Ltd (PWS) is a company established in Perth, Western Australia in 2002
specialising in the Design, Manufacture & Supply of Down Hole, Slickline Conveyed Intervention
Products. PWS provides engineering and design services supported by product training, after sales
support and field support personnel to run PWS and third party tools when requested.

2.0 Introduction to SIM Lock System

The SIM (Slickline Installed Mechanically set) Lock system is a series of flow control devices
developed for running in monobore well completions or wells where a suitable landing nipple is not
available. The system is based on the patented SIM Lock body and Running Tool which was
developed by Peak Well Services Pty Ltd (PWS).

The SIM Lock system was developed initially at the request of Unocal / Chevron to specifically meet
their well and operational requirements in the Gulf of Thailand. As such the SIM Lock system was
required to:

Operate with Multiple Setting methods

Be operable without explosives, motors or any other delicate electro / hydraulic systems

Provide Multiple Applications

Be User Friendly (100% field serviceable)

Be able to perform in harsh down hole conditions

Be cost Effective

The system as delivered and available to the market:

Is a fully slickline conveyable and retrievable system

Is run and recovered with a conventional slickline toolstring

Is purely mechanical requiring no explosives or electronics

Is run with a common running tool which incorporates drag spring, j-slot and upper slip
arrangement. The running tool is fully recoverable and not integral to the SIM Lock body

Can be run on e-line or slickline firing system and set pyrotechnically, using standard setting
tools or where required to be run on coiled tubing or tubing can be set hydraulically

Is designed so that all pressure components that remain in the well are made of material
conforming to NACE MR0175

Is designed with elastomers rated to a 350 degrees Fahrenheit

Is available in a range of tubing sizes to suit 2 7/8, 3 1/2 & 4 1/2

Is extendable to provide a range of functionality:

Gauge Hanger

Plug System

Straddle System

Integral Gas Lift

Downhole Choke

Suspension Device

The SIM Lock system has been designed to function to suit a range of applications using the SIM
Lock body as the common component base. The system requires no special hand tools to assemble
or disassemble the various applications and as such it is fully serviceable in the field.

3.0 Applications
The SIM Lock system provides a large range of applications which are all based on and built up from
the basic SIM Lock body:

The simplest and most basic application is as a Gauge Hanger where no sealing mechanism
is required

When the SIM Lock Body is fitted with an elastomeric element it forms a plug body. To create
a sealing device there are a selection of equalising devices to choose from including Melon,
Prong or Pump-Open type options.

As a plug or flow through device it can be used as a suspension device for carrying other
control devices

The plug can then be run as a flow through device but fitted with an interchangeable choke to
control fluid flow within the well

The system then can be run with an upper and lower plug body connected by a stackable
straddle system to provide isolation over the desired section to be straddled

The same straddle section can be fitted with an Integral Gas Lift device to provide down hole
gas lift

All of the applications are run with a small number of common running and pulling tools.

3.1 SIM Lock Running Tool

The SIM Lock Running Tool is used to convey and selectively

set the SIM Lock on slickline. The lock can be set at any
chosen depth inside monobore type completions or completions
where existing production nipples are damaged. The Running
Tool is pinned to the Running Tool and conveyed on a
conventional slickline toolstring.

A radial indexing mechanism using variable drag springs

Slip Assembly

activates a set of slips to anchor the Running Tool to the tubing

wall at any desired setting depth. The SIM Lock is then set by
downward jarring. An overpull is applied against the collet to
confirm the lock is fully set. Once set in place the Running Tool
is released from the SIM Lock by upward jarring.

3.2 SIM Lock Bomb Hanger

In its simplest form the SIM Lock body is used as a carrier for
downhole tools. In such applications it maybe used as a:

Bomb Hanger for carrying down hole gauges

The advantage of the SIM Lock in all cases is that it allows the
tool being conveyed by the SIM Lock to be placed as close as
is desired to the area for pin-point data acquisition.

3.3 SIM Lock Plug

Newly perforated
producing zone

When the SIM Lock is fitted with an elastomeric element and

run with a prong it will then act as a bi-directional plug.

Applications include:
Equalising Prong

Collision Barrier during drilling operations

Wellhead isolation

Zonal Isolation for water shut off

Zonal Isolation to prevent cross flow / co-mingling

Packer Setting & tubing tests during completions /

workovers

Tubing Integrity testing

3.4 SIM Lock Carrier Device

Newly perforated
producing zone

With adapters added to the SIM Lock plug, the plug can be
used as a carrier device for:

Carrying down hole screens

To hang storm chokes / velocity valves

To carry corrosion coupons

To carry any other device that needs to be suspended

in tubing where there is no nipple profile or the profile is
damaged. Can be set at precise depth within tubing
where the tool needs to be positioned

In this application the SIM Lock is used to carry a standing

valve. This allows the upper zone to produce without cross flow
to the lower zone. When the zones equalise the lower zone can
produce freely with the upper zone.

3.5 SIM Lock Choke

The SIM Lock body can be fitted with an independently

Oil producing zone

recoverable Downhole Choke thus allowing the SIM Lock to be

used to choke back well fluids as desired. The SIM Lock
system has a unique arrangement where the downhole choke
can be recovered to surface without recovering the plug body.
This means the choke can be recovered and re-sized to meet
flow requirements without the added runs required to pull and
re-set a plug reducing further runs / time & also removing plug
redress cost.

Interchangeable Choke

The SIM Choke can be used to:

Control oil or gas flow between two or more sands to control

cross flow and improve overall reservoir performance

To control gas flow from a gas reservoir below an existing oil

reservoir and thus provide natural gas lift

To control fluid flow from differing reservoirs to give a controlled

fluid mix from the well, for example to balance gas dilutions
between high and low CO2 content gases

3.6 SIM Lock Straddle System

The SIM Lock system can be fitted with straddle tubes between
an upper and lower packer to provide isolation across the
Isolated water
or unwanted
gas producing
zone

straddled zone. There is no requirement for a different SIM

Lock device all SIM Lock applications use the same base SIM
Lock components.

The SIM Lock system has a unique selective latch mechanism

on each straddle connector to allow the tubes to be recovered
one at a time should the straddle need to be retrieved. This can
be critical for safety purposes when trying to recover the
straddle section back into the lubricator. If the recovered
straddle system is longer than expected because more than
one straddle tube has been recovered, it may not be possible to
function the Xmas Tree valves thus creating a safety hazard.

The SIM Straddle System can be used to:

Isolate water zones

Isolate unwanted gas flow

Isolate a hole in tubing

Isolate a leaking device within the tubing SPM, SSD etc

3.7 SIM Lock Integral Gas Lift

The SIM Lock Integral Gas Lift System incorporates a Gas Lift
Choke Sub / Connector that is run within the straddle system
providing controlled gas flow from a gas zone behind the
straddled zone. If required the choke can be re-sized by
recovering the upper straddle tube
