WCDMA SYSTEMS UE TO ISDN (Forward Setup)

Terminology Note:

BA (Bearer Address) instead of BIWF-Address

BIR (Binding Information Reference) instead of BNC-ID in GSM and WCDMA

systems terminology.

BNC-ID (Bearer Network Connection Identifier)

o A MGW generated reference that is used to associate the call instance at
the connectivity level, with the bearer.
o It is provided by the MGW on one edge of the connectivity layer and it is
transported, via GCP and BICC to a MGW on the other edge of the
connectivity layer for use in bearer establishment.

BNC-ID for the BICC protocol is the same as:

o SUGR (Served User Generated Reference) in the Q.2630 protocol
o BIR (Binding Information Reference) in the GCP protocol

Figure 1: Mapping of BICC to Ericsson Terminology

1. UE (User Equipment) initiates the call set-up

UE to MSC-S

NAS SETUP (Network Access Stratum) message sent

Contains B-Number and BC (Bearer Capabilities) information

RNC encapsulates SETUP message into a RANAP message

GSM DTAP SETUP message encapsulated inside BSSAP message from

BSC

2. MSC-server creates a new call instance

MSC-S to UE

Responds with a NAS CALL PROCEEDING message

Message contains BC IE (Bearer Capability Information Element), codec

selected for call

3. MSC-server completes B-number analysis

Selects an outgoing route

MGW selected for incoming and outgoing sides.

4. MSC Server call control function selects MGW-1 (source MGW)

5. MSC Server sends a GCP ADD command to MGW-1

Requests MGW to create a new context

Requests the MGW to create an ephemeral termination (towards access)

If it was forward bearer setup with deferred MGW selection a BICC

IAM would be sent and not a GCP message

6. MGW-1 sends a GCP ADDreply to the MSC Server

Context ID

MGW value

Termination ID

Local Descriptor (MGW-1 BIR & BA) RNC requires this information to
establish AAL2 bearer

7. MSC Server sends a request to the RNC to establish a RAB (Radio Access Bearer)

Allocate radio resources

Establish bearer towards MGW-1

RANAP RAB ASSIGNMENT REQUEST message

8. RNC establishes the AAL2 bearer towards MGW-1 (Q.AAL2)

ERQ (Establish Request) & ECF (Establish Confirm) messages (BA

information used for set-up)

MGW-1 associates new bearer with previously reserved resource (BIR ref)

New connection tied to GCP termination (RNC side) and call instance in
MSC-server

9. RNC responds to MSC-server with a RAB assignment complete message

RAB id is used to identify the call instance in the MSC-server

Call path established from RAN to MGW-1

10. MSC Server sends GCP ADD to MGW-1

Request a second termination to the same context

New ephemeral termination (towards CN)

11. MGW-1 sends a GCP ADDreply message

ID for new termination

12. MSC-Server initiates an outgoing call set-up towards TSC (Transit Switching
Centre)

Indicates B-number analysis

Forwards relevant call control information

BICC IAM message

BIR (BNC-ID in BICC) & BA (BIWF address in BICC) for T2 on MGW1, which is known as

CIC and Bearer characteristics

13. TSC Server examines the BICC message

B-Number analysis completed

MGW-2 is selected

14. TSC send a GCP ADD command to MGW-2

Requests an ephemeral termination towards the CN

Requests a CONTEXT

15. MGW-2 sends an ADDreply

Indicates ephemeral termination towards CN

16. MGW-2 sends a NOTIFY command to TSC Server

Indicates bearer established event has been detected

17. TSC Server sends ADD command to MGW-2

Connection towards ISDN network

Physical termination moved from NULL context

Selection of device (virtual SNT) is a result of B-number and Routing

analysis in the same way as in a traditional switch.

18. MGW-2 sends a ADDreply to TSC Server

Confirms physical termination is added to context

19. TSC-server generates a Narrowband ISUP IAM message

Sent towards ISDN network

Traditional IAM containing CIC

20. TSC-Server expects ACM (Address Complete Message)

B-subscriber is alerted with a ring tone

21. TSC-Server sends a MODIFY command to MGW-2

Echo cancellers need to be linked in

Modify physical termination

Echo cancellation property, TDM circuit package

22. MGW-2 responds with a MODIFY reply

Confirm physical termination modification

23. TSC-server sends BICC ACM to MSC-server

Sends CIC (Call Instance Code)

24. MSC-server send NAS ALERTING message to UE

Ring tone indicates B-subscriber is being alerted

25. TSC-server receives an N-ISUP ANM (Answer Message)

The B-subscriber has answered their phone

26. TSC-server sends BICC ANM to MSC-server

Notifies MSC-server that b-subscriber has answered

27. MSC-server sends GCP MODIFY message to MGW-1

MGW-1 modifies speech path to initiate bothway through-connection at

bearer level

Termination towards CN is modified

28. MSC-server sends NAS CONNECT message to UE

Indicates call setup is finished

Conversation can start
