NCS I nutrition coordinator leads nutrition month celebration
By Neil Romano S. Manaog
For the fifth year now, Mrs. Emma B. Naguna, Master Teacher II of the Naga Central School I, led the
activities for the Nutrition Month celebration in July 2011 in this school.
With the support of School Principal Dr. Teresita Irma S. Dy-Cok, the faculty and parents, NCS I has been
piloting said celebration for five years, bringing in proceeds of the project each year.
Activities that highlighted the celebration were the Search for Mr. and Miss A1 Child, Slogan and Poster
Making Contest, the Veggie Camp Contest, Cookfest for mothers and a cooking contest for male
teachers.
In the last five years, Naguna has also organized feeding programs for malnourished pupils, always

finding ways on how to improve the nutrition status of the school and helping co-teachers in skills
development and professional growth.
Naguna also plans the next project for the Computer laboratory, saying that the Computer Education in
elementary is still under Home Economics.
NCS Is Brigada Eskwela builds temporary classrooms
By Neil Romano S. Manaog

Things are looking up for the Naga Central School I this year.

With 11 new temporary classrooms, Dr Teresita Irma S. Dy-cok, principal of NCS I, is optimistic that the
new classrooms will help boost their students performance this school year. We are doing this for the
sake of our pupils, Dy-cok said. Dy-cok said they will not settle that pupils suffer from two shifts of
classes.

Last school year, NCS I suffered from the shortage in the number of classrooms after some 13 of them
were razed by fire. That time, the administration decided to conduct two shifts of classes in the primary
department.

The biggest public elementary school in Naga City, NCS I presently has six standard classrooms
(measuring 7 m x 9 m). Other classrooms measuring 5m x 6m and 6m x 7m are considered dilapidated,
condemnable and below standard. In their previous arrangements, some 45 to 55 pupils were
accommodated in 6m x 5m classrooms. Some 60 permanent teachers are tasked to handle 13 grade 1
sections and ten sections from Grade 2 to Grade 6.

Seeing the need for more classrooms and the need to abate the increasing number of non-readers in
grade 1, Dy-cok rallied efforts to build temporary classrooms to accommodate all the pupils. With this
advantage, pupils can enjoy the whole day session of fun and learning, Dy-cok said.

To facilitate the construction of the makeshift classrooms, Dr. Dy-cok delegated the task to Mr. Oscar M.
Chavez, schools physical facilities coordinator, who sought the help of military personnel, Philippine
National Police (PNP) and Bureau of Fire Protection to construct the classrooms rabuz-style.

Under the Brigada Eskwela that commenced during weeks before the formal opening of classes, NCS I
parents donated materials like cement, sand, coco lumbers, GI sheets, nails and construction materials.
To finance the labor cost, other parents and individuals voluntarily donated amounts of money.

From 3,509 in the previous school year, the student enrolment this year increased to 4,057. The 10
Grade 1 sections last year increased to 13 sections this year. Classrooms also accommodated an average
of 50 pupils per section as compared to last years 48 pupils.

Dy-cok noted the increase in the number of transferees from private schools. More students from said
schools have transferred to NCS I and NCS II this year, perhaps owing to the rising tuition and fees. The
NCS I principal also noted that their pupils are daily commuters all the way from neighboring towns of
Magarao, Calabanga, Canaman, Bombon, San Fernando, Gainza, Pili, Ocampo, Tinambac and even
Partido area.

In a recent visit to her alma mater and the school where she also taught in her early years, DepEd
Regional Director Orfelina O. Tuy committed to the NCS I officials to follow up with the national offices
the application for replacement of the two or three-story building that will house some 13 classrooms
for the NCS I pupils. The proposed building is virtually the replacement of the classrooms damaged by
fire in the past year.

Investing in ICT for Quality Education
By Neil Romano S. Manaog

The investments of the government and private sectors in Information and Communications Technology
(ICT) have indeed contributed to young Filipinos access to quality education.

Although not all schools in the Philippines are wired to the Internet yet, those with access to ICT tools
make the most of the technology. In our region, many of our students and teachers utilize ICT in their
learning and teaching. Using ICT tools is fundamental in mining class topics, and in doing school
assignments, research work and other scholastic activities.

Students show more enthusiasm in an ICT-integrated classroom. I have observed that classroom
instructions using traditional tools like chalk and blackboard are becoming less and less appealing to my
students. I discovered that using computers, LCD projectors and interactive topic exercises not only
motivate my students but also helps me in managing the classroom. ICT tools save time and enrich
students learning experience. Because of their interest in the subject and the tools used for instruction,
students are inspired to participate in the activities and to learn how to create and manipulate their own
learning tools.

Even the teachers challenge themselves to learn more about new teaching strategies. Teachers use
audio-visual presentations and even introduce recorded lessons in their classes. We are very fortunate
because our school has been provided with enough tools to help teachers improve their teaching
strategies.

With the onset of ICT integration in education, todays teachers, regardless of what subject they teach,
need to acquire new skills that will enable them to maximize the potentials of ICT and the Internet. Basic
skills include the use of e-mail, designing lesson presentations, making grades on spreadsheets, creating
simple letters and programs, research work and even online content development. I believe that the
acquisition of these skills is needed, or else, the full potential and relevance of the Internet in

educational studies wont be realized by the students. With regards to online shared learning, teachers
today should also recognize that learning should not be limited in the classroom. With the Internet,
collaborative projects can be undertaken where two or more classes or groups from various
geographical locations can work on a common project.

I believe that the success of ICT integration in education can be achieved through the collaboration of
teachers, school administrators, government and private sectors. Investing in education wins big.
Investing in ICT for quality education reaps greater rewards for the youth, the teachers, our future.

NCS-1: The Womb of Achievers

By Athena Miguelle Alanis

Naga Central School 1 (NCS-1) is the largest public elementary school in Naga City that provides quality
education to pupils who have remarkable academic skills and talents. Because of this, it is considered as
the womb of achievers.

The teachers teaching strategies encourage the students to push further to achieve their goals and
excel. They are experienced men and women who teach the students not only their academic subjects
but the bald facts of life that everyone has to accept. Some of them also give pupils duties that they
must do. This can prepare them for future management.

Has this work paid off? It has. For so many years the school has been producing quality graduates who
have contributed to our society. One of them is Joker Arroyo, a former senator.

Now another school year is approaching and there will come another generation of pupils with goals
and dreams. Will the school live up to its reputation and make achievers out of these children? One can
only hope.
