Introduction:
IP TV (Internet Protocol Television) is a system through which television services are
delivered using the internet protocol suite over a packet switched network such as the
internet instead of being delivered through traditional terrestrial, satellite and cable
formats.
IP TV services may be classified into three main groups:
1- Live Television
2- Time-shifted television
3- Video on demand
About NOORSAT:
NOORSAT, global satellite communication, was established in 2004 in the kingdom of
Bahrain, with its headquarters in Amman, kingdom of Jordan, as the first privately
owned satellite service provider.
NOORSAT currently transmits over 250 TV channels through its capacities on the two
hotspots serving the Arab world, Badr Al-Naile at 7 degree west and Badr Al-Arab at
25.5-26 degree east. Also, NOORSAT provides data and telecom satellite services in the
Arab world, Europe, in the east and part of central Asia.
IP TV represents an opportunity for NOORSAT to vary its TV services and expand its
viewership platform.

Purpose of the research:

This research project discusses the commercial part of the IP TV opportunity through
carefully investigating two segments:
1- TV channels
2- Viewers of TV channels
Therefore, each segment will have different decision statements, research objectives,
research questions and research hypotheses.

Decision Statement:
-

TV channels:
Why would the TV channels subscribe to IP TV?
Is the material type the channel broadcasts (Movies, Series, News, Sports,
chatting etc) a factor in the TV channel choosing to subscribe to IP TV?
What will be the expected service subscription cost on the TV channels?

Viewers of TV channels:
What are the factors that might encourage the viewers to use IP TV? And why
would the viewers start using IP TV instead of the more common Satellite TV?
Will the IP TV increase the number of viewers for the TV channels?
Which IP TV service (Live Television, Time-shifted Television, and Video on
Demand) is more favorable for the viewers?
Will the viewers be willing to pay for the IP TV services?
Since the internet speed is a technical limitation for viewers to use IP TV, how
will the new communications technologies (Faster ADSL, 3G, Wifi, and WiMax)
affect the usage of IP TV.

Research Objectives:
-

TV channels:
Determine the reasons that will encourage the TV channels to subscribe to IP
TV.
Determine the relationship between the material type the channel broadcasts
and the willingness of the TV channel to subscribe to IP TV.
Determine the cost for the IP TV service.

Viewers of the TV channels:

Identify the factors that will encourage the viewers to use IP TV and switch from
the more common Satellite television.
Determine if the IP TV will increase the number of viewers for the TV channels.
Identify the favorable IP TV service for the viewers.
Identify if the viewers willingness to pay for IP TV.
Identify the effect of the new communication technologies (Faster ADSL, 3G,
Wifi, and WiMax) on the usage of IP TV.

Research Hypotheses:
IP TV will increase the number of viewers for the TV channels.
The new communication technologies (Faster ADSL, 3G, Wifi, and WiMax) will
increase the usage of IP TV.
Easy access to IP TV will encourage the switch from Satellite Television to IP TV.

Research Design:
The research design will include:
1- Exploratory research in the initial stage will be conducted:
a. Telecommunication Regularity Commissions (TRC) statistics will be used to
identify the internet penetration with the communication technology
distribution in Jordan, as the internet speed is a technical constraint for the
viewers.
b. An interview with a representative of a company providing similar service in
the Jordanian market in order to better understand the project.
2- Descriptive and Causal research to study the relationships between the project
variables, and the research objectives will mainly consist of surveys:
a. Email surveys will be distributed to the TV channels currently broadcasting on
NOORSATs Satellite TV platform.
b. Surveys will be distributed to a representative sample of viewers who use
internet.

Pretesting will be conducted to get feedback whether the surveys are clear, will they
provide us with the required information on the research variables, and will they
provide us with all the relevant needed information.

Sample design:
Since this project has two separate segments, there will be a sample taken from each
segment:
1- TV channels:
The email surveys will be sent to all TV channels broadcasting through NOORSAT,
data analysis will be conducted according to the received responses.
2- The viewers:
Pretesting will be conducted in order estimate the standard variable of the studied
population, thus, enabling us to determine the sample size to be surveyed.

Data Gathering:
The surveys will be distributed in various places in Amman, Irbid and Madaba.
Universities, Malls, and Cafes represent key places to conduct the surveys with the
viewers.
All data gathering will be conducted by the group members.

Data processing and analysis:

Standard editing and coding procedures will be utilized. Statistical analysis and
computer software will be used in the study of the descriptive and causal relationships.

Report Preparation:
A written report will be prepared, and an oral presentation of the findings will be made
in accordance with class convenience. The final report is to be submitted in the 16th
week of the class.
