laming the media for societys problems

is a time-honored tradition reserved for
people who are usually in trouble, cannot
take the heat of their own actions or simply are
angry about an issue. Whether a politician, sports
athlete or even a movie star, its common to point
fingers at an easy public target. In other words,
when all else fails, shoot the messenger.

The media has become an easy target because public opinion of journalists is at an all-time low. So its not surprising
that on careercast.com, newspaper reporter was ranked 199 out
of the top 200 best (or worst) jobs to have. Only lumberjack
was lower. Photojournalist did not fare much better, coming in
at 186.
When asked the question Do you trust journalists? respondents in most surveys answered yes only 20-30 percent of
the time. And that number is only getting smaller.
So whats happening here? The standards for accurate reporting have been eroded. Opinion gets mixed up with reporting. Social media gets mixed up with news media, with
websites like Twitter or Facebook becoming a key information
source for millions of people. Anyone can be a journalist, publisher, blogger or somewhere in between. Accuracy has become an option rather than an important necessity.
In a rush to publish information as quickly as possible, factchecking gets sloppy or forgotten. Or theres simply no desire
to get the other side of the story. The Rolling Stones report on
rape at the University of Virginia is a recent example where
vetting the subjects story would have yielded a far different
result, if a story at all. Because of these factors, the media is
simply an easy target. In some cases it is deserved. But the majority of time, it is not.
The liberal media is often blamed by conservatives for their
woes, yet even President Obama took a swipe about how negative economic news on television causes Americans to feel
overly anxious. After announcing there would not be any indictment of police officer Darren Wilson, highly-criticized
prosecutor Bob McCulloch railed against the media (mostly
social media) for hampering the investigation.

Jessica Pfahler

The most significant challenge encountered in this investigation has been the 24-hour news cycle and its insatiable appetite for something, for anything, to talk about, he said. In
this case, it was the messenger trying to shoot another messenger.
Sony gets hacked and cancels their movie The Interview.
Time to blame the media. Even Aaron Sorkin, the main writer
for HBOs The Newsroom, described news outlets reporting
on the incident as morally treasonous and spectacularly dishonorable. Hollywood seemed to be in agreement.
I find this quite odd coming from a person who based an entire TV series on the nuances of reporting news.
In all these cases, opinion was clearly mixed with unbiased
reporting, thus causing more negative opinions, instead of focusing on the facts of the story.
That is precisely why the COURIER elected to minimize
our opinion columns during our years-long coverage of the
citys fight with Golden State Water (GSW). It wasnt until our
official endorsement a few weeks before the Measure W vote
that we took a public opinion. Even GSW must admit they had
every opportunity to voice opinions in the pages of the
COURIER.
Because there was a clear line between reporting and opinion, our news stories carried more credibility. Yes there was
finger pointing, but not at the messenger. And thats the way it
should be.
As we look to the future, the lines between accurate reporting, biased reporting and opinion will only get more blurred,
especially with social media becoming a more common source
for news and information.
For 2015, the COURIER will continue to reach out to readers in new and exciting ways. We will also stay committed to
reporting facts in a timely, clear and objective fashion.

Claremonters practice the spirit of giving this holiday

Claremont residents demonstrated their generosity with a
slew of toys for kids that might otherwise

to collect new, unwrapped toys each year and distribute

The office lobby was filled with over 100 toys, with
more donations coming in past the December 19 deadline. The toys are picked up in Claremont and taken to
Camp Pendleton, where they will be sorted by gender and

of interest, including the presentation of
the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) for both Vista del Valle
and Sycamore Elementary schools.

COURIER photos/Steven Felschundneff

With pears in hand, Gus Kratz plays a pear tree in a festive rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas on Friday at Sycamore
Elementary School. The students sang several songs, including a few that were parodies of Christmas carols. Below, students from Kelly Diaz and Jodi Erlinger-Irwins kindergarten through second grade classes put on a concert show celebrating
the holiday season called Merry Everything.

For both schools, presenting the annual report on the schools performance
in meeting last years goals and on
progress toward this years aims involved some winging it. Schools are required to present an SPSA each year
under No Child Left Behind, the bulk
of which involves academic goals. And
yet, given that this is the first year that
Common Core assessments will be undertaken by students, school site councils have been without an official
manner of measuring improvement in
subjects like math and English Language Arts (ELA).
Still, both Vista and Sycamore shared
that they had significant growth in the
number of teachers reporting that they
were comfortable with the philosophy
and methods of the Common Core
standards. Those standards, in a nutshell, involve teaching fewer concepts
with more depth; having the concepts
students are studying reach into multiple subjects; requiring students to explain how they come by their answers
on homework and tests; and making
sure kids grasp the real-world applications of everything they learn.
Vista is currently using benchmark
assessments that, in the area of ELA,
they borrowed from another district and
that, in the area of mathematics, have
been devised by the schools staff in a
cooperative effort. When asked whether
they could share these measuring
toolswhich are particularly critical
during this transitional timePrincipal
Dave Stewart said they can and they
have. Both elementary schools were
lauded for their emphasis on whole
child development and for their commitment to student learning.

Dreaming of India
by Jan Wheatcroft

just finished a three-day art and craft

show with 29 other artists. One of
them, a wood carver, had made an assemblage of small items that she had collected over the years during her travels in
India. She had small figures, Buddhas,
saints heads, and wooden, metal, ceramic
and glass symbolic bits that she had adhered in mosaic fashion along with stones
and glass pieces. It was dynamic, colorful
and reminded me of what I loved about
India.

It breathed and throbbed a vibrancy that I have only

experienced throughout my travels there over the
years. India is not always an easy place to visit. The
contrasts are great, the poverty can be difficult to deal
with and the culture and spirituality can be difficult to
understand. The food can be very spicy and the
weather very hot and humid. People can get into your
face. Drinking the water can be dangerous. One can
develop all sorts of fears, if allowed. These are the
negative aspects, which often keeps people from going
to India and exploring the variety of life there. But I
was lucky. I was introduced to Indian travel by an
English friend who has loved it passionately and has
spent many years happily immersing herself in the
various areas of the country, living with local people in
a simple manner and enjoying every moment of it.
India is not dull and boring. It is multi-layered,
filled with pockets of expats who cannot leave or who
return faithfully year after year, pulled back by the
boldness of life. One need not feel alone as people are
friendly and are usually ready to share their lives and
thoughts with foreigners. Once in Jaipur in Rajasthan,
we met a man on the street who made puppets and did
puppet shows representing local story characters and

animals. His puppets were made with great imagination and delicacy. He invited us to his house. I admit
that I was nervous about going, but luckily my friend
was not and so we followed him.
He lived with his extended family on the pavement
in a large tent made of tarps and blankets and filled
with boxes and people. In the end, he gave a puppet
show for us and the local children on the porch of a
neighbors house. Other times, we were asked to join
wedding parties, Christenings and other festivities and
to be photographed with couples holding babies and
smiling along with them. Openness and kindness
abound.
India is so full of color from the landscapefrom
trees, village gardens, rice fields and tea plantations to
the color of the paintings and designs on the houses
the ground decorations so carefully designed with
colored dry paints and so easily erased in a day or
so. Cows are decorated. Saris and other beautifully
draped, flowing fabric dresses come in the most beautiful colors and float in the breezes as the women
carry great burdens on their heads seeming to move
so easily along the road.
Markets are so alive and exciting to wander
through. The piles of fruits and vegetables are beautifully arranged and the flower sellers are perched above
their orange marigolds, busily creating wreathes while
you watch. The smells from perfumed oils, floral aromas and rotting foodstuff mixed with spices and curries create a heady experience. Fabric sellers and
tailors sit next to women selling fresh herbs and veg-

etables. A man sweeps away scraps, which he piles up

in front of the market for the wandering cows to
browse through. It is busy, bustling, crowded, sad and
joyful all at the same time. Poverty is everywhere
alongside an overabundance of everything. Small
shrines exist everywhere with offerings placed on
them. There is shouting and pushing, there is serenity
and acceptance, there is noise and there is prayer.
I have been lucky to have traveled in the northwest
and the northeast of India. I have spent time in big
cities. I have visited the south, been to ashrams, gone
to hill stations and stayed at retreats where I was massaged and oiled. I have discovered delicious foods
and tried new tastes and returned to my favorite old
ones. I have been up mountains for the cool air, and
on rivers enjoying the diversity of life.
Yes, I have seen great poverty in people who live
all of their lives on the sidewalk, of children who
buzz around begging for money and clearly do not
want food. There are old grannies on grain sacks begging, and legless men on skateboards asking for help.
India is very much alive. There is great diversity of
language, of religion from the Saddus or Holy men to
the Hindus, Muslims and Christians and even a very
tiny Jewish enclave in Kerala in the southern part.
India is exciting and bewildering, fun and overwhelming.
On my last trip to the southern part of Indian, we
stayed in wonderful guest houses where kindness
overflowed. I once stayed in a very posh hotel in
Delhi, which was like visiting a storybook and Ive
stayed in extremely simple accommodations in
Mysore. Each of these was an experience that enriched my stays and opened my eyes to life so different from my own.
One year ago, I was getting ready for a six-week
visit to Southern India. This year, I am not and I am
aware of how much I miss it. India throbs with life.
All ones senses are on alert. And so today, I am
dreaming of India.

SCHOOL BOARD/from page 5

Recently, CUSDs assistant superintendent of educational services, Bonnie Bell, left the district after 4
years to become superintendent of the Lowell Joint
School District in the Whittier/La Habra Heights area.
At last weeks school board gathering, Kevin Ward,
assistant superintendent of human resources, presented for board approval a candidate to replace Ms.
Bell. Myrlene Pierre, whose 30-year career in education last found her serving as director of educational
services and of Gifted and Talented Education at the
Magnolia School District, was unanimously approved
as the districts new assistant superintendent of educational services.
Mr. Ward noted that Ms. Pierre, who has also
worked for the Anaheim City and Compton Unified
school districts as well as at schools in the greater
New York City area, beat out 43 applicants for the
job.
Sustaining schools
Its the season of giving, a sentiment represented at
the meeting via a presentation by Ron Mittino, head
of Sustainable Claremonts Schools Action group.
Sustainable Claremont, he announced, is donating
$2,550 to the district to be divided among Green
Team leaders at various school sites.
Thus far, six schools have Green Team leaders,
who are in charge of such efforts as recycling, reduced energy use and programs that use school gardens to teach kids about healthy food and
sustainability. These include Vista, Oakmont, Mountain View, Sycamore, El Roble and Claremont High
School. The money is nominal, Mr. Mitino emphasized, but he hopes it will provide some compensation
and support to volunteers doing a very important job.
Sustainable Claremonts contribution to Claremont

Schools is up from $2,000 last year, money that was

used as a contribution toward the salary of CUSD
Garden Coordinator Dessa DAquila. Ms. DAquila
is now in her third year as the districts garden coordinator, and is also now teaching an ROP class at San
Antonio High School, the site of a flourishing food
justice program.
Sustainable Claremont is able to give more because
they are thriving, Mr. Mittino said in a subsequent interview. Just this month, the nonprofit organization,
which is independent but works cooperatively with
the city and Claremont schools, moved into new digs,
an office generously supplied by the Rancho Santa
Ana Botanic Garden. The group also welcomed a
part-time staffer this month in the form of Sustainaibility Coordinator Alexis Reyes. Ms. Reyes, a
recent UCLA graduate, was valedictorian when she
graduated from Claremont High School.
Funding for Sustainable Claremont comes from a
number of sources, including: Claremont Home Energy Retrofit Programs ongoing participation in the
Energy Champion Program; seed money from the
city; membership fees; and money from the citys recent second-place win in the Cool California Challenge, an energy usage reduction effort spearheaded
by Sustainable Claremont.
There was also a moment of celebration when the
boys of Claremont High Schools varsity water polo
team got resounding applause for a stand-out season.
Under the leadership of Coach Kristin McCown, the
intrepid members of the Wolfpack pooled their talent to turn out CHS waterpolos first CIF championship in decades.

Celebrating district achievement at years end

by Jim Elsasser, EdD, Superintendent of Claremont Unified School District

t is an exciting time to be part of the

Claremont Unified School District!
Although we are coming to the end of
the 2014 calendar year, CUSD is in the
middle of another very exciting and productive school year. In looking back over
the first four months of this school year, I
would like to highlight a few of the accomplishments that have supported
CUSDs longstanding tradition of excellence in academics, the arts, athletics and
extracurricular and co-curricular activities.
Students participating in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Claremont High School continue
to demonstrate exceptional results. The IB worldwide
pass rates, based on the May 2014 exams, were recently released and reveal that 79.3 percent of students
worldwide passed IB exams with a score of 4 or higher.
The pass rate for Claremont High School IB students
was 86.9 percent. Since the inception of the IB program at Claremont High School, our students have
continually surpassed the worldwide pass rate.
Claremont High School boys water polo finished
first in the Palomares League with an undefeated
record and, for the first time in 47 years, brought home
a CIF championship. Congratulations to Coach Kristin
McKown, her coaching staff and the entire team for an
outstanding season!
Congratulations are also extended to San Antonio
High School for being named a 2014 Model Continuation High School! The Model Continuation High
School Recognition Program identifies and recognizes

VIEWPOINT
outstanding programs and creates a resource list of
quality programs for school visitations. These schools
provide comprehensive services to at-risk youth
through the use of exemplary instructional strategies,
flexible scheduling, and guidance and counseling services.
The Education Trust-West released a report identifying top-performing districts serving Californias English Learners. The report included an analysis of data
from 276 unified school districts based on their performance on four indicators. The report identified districts rising to the top on each metric, as well as 11
districts that realized exceptional performance on three
of the four indicators. Out of the 276 districts studied,
Claremont is one of only 11 districts to be recognized
for having met three of the four metrics.
Claremont Unified School District is one of 10 districts that comprise the East San Gabriel Valley Special
Education Local Planning Area (SELPA). For the past
40 years, districts in the SELPA have been utilizing the
educational services of the Los Angeles County Office
of Education to provide services to students with moderate to severe disabilities.
With the desire to provide students with better educational opportunities, the SELPA and district directors
identified specialized programs for the moderate to se-

vere disability populations that would be supported locally by each of the 10 districts. CUSD became the
provider district for students with moderate and severe
medically fragile needs within the SELPA, and is
proud to be able to provide meaningful opportunities
and quality programs that meet the unique needs of
every student.
Professional development continues to be an area of
focus for this year. In August, a student-free day was
provided in order to bring all district staff together to
receive training on our transition to the Common Core
State Standards (CCSS). Additional trainings have
been held throughout the year, which have included developing new units of study that align with the CCSS.
Teachers have been working diligently to prepare
students to be globally competitive by focusing on 21st
century skills, including an emphasis on creativity,
communication, collaboration and critical thinking.
Over 2,000 iPads have been deployed this year, supporting 21st century learning and the districts technology vision. This was possible, in part, by the support of
the Claremont Educational Foundation and individual
Parent Faculty Associations.
I count it a privilege to serve the students, staff, parents and community partners of the Claremont Unified
School District. On behalf of the board of education, I
would like to wish you a Happy New Year, and thank
you for your continued support of CUSD.

too. As is always the tradition here at Candlelight Pavilion, Santa and Mama stay
after the performance to meet guests.

Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story has had
audiences on their feet in every corner of
the globe and now The Worlds Most
Successful Rock n Roll Musical is back
and ready to explode onto the Candlelight
Pavilion stage in a toe-tapping, hand-clapping extravaganza. Buddy is the story of

14

Buddy Holly, who changed the face of

popular music over 55 years ago. The musical tells the last few years of Buddy
Hollys life and how he and his highschool friends, the Crickets, turned country music upside down and created a
unique-style of sound which some called
the devils music. From Buddys frustrations at Decca Records to his success at
the Apollo Theatre, Buddy artistically
portrays the music and the man who forever changed the nation. It recreates his
final moments up until his tragic death and
celebrates one of the most exciting musical concerts of all time. Buddy celebrates
the music of Buddy Holly with some of
his greatest hits including Peggy Sue,
Thatll Be the Day, Everyday and
Raining in my Heart.

TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering
bidding on this property lien, you should understand that
there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction.
You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself.
Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of
the property. You should also be aware that the lien
being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the
highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being
auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the
property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may
exist on this property by contacting the county
recorders office or a title insurance company, either of
which may charge you a fee for this information. If you
consult either of these resources, you should be aware
that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage
or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice
of sale may be postponed one or more times by the

be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy
to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn

telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The
best way to verify postponement information is to attend
the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims
any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown
herein. If no street address or other common designation
is shown, directions to the location of the property may
be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of
this Notice of Sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey
title for any reason, the successful bidder's sole and
exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid
to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have
no further recourse. If the sale is set aside for any
reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled
only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser
shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee, or the Mortgagees Attorney.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
California Municipal Finance Authority
PACE Program
THE CALIFORNIA MUNICIPAL FINANCE
AUTHORITY GIVES NOTICE that:
1. Intention to Form a Contractual Assessment Program; Proposed Boundaries. Pursuant to a resolution
entitled ``A Resolution Declaring Intention to Finance
or Refinance the Installation of Distributed Generation
Renewable Energy Sources, Energy Efficiency Improvements, Water Efficiency Improvements, Seismic
Strengthening Improvements, Electric Vehicle Charging
Infrastructure and Other Work, Infrastructure or Improvements Authorized by Law,`` adopted on December
12, 2014 (the ``Resolution of Intention``), the Board of
Directors (the ``Board of Directors``) of the California
Municipal Finance Authority (the ``Authority``) has determined that it would be convenient, advantageous, and
in the public interest to designate an area, which shall encompass the entire geographic territory within the
boundaries of every California county and city that is a
member of the Authority (collectively, the ``Covered Jurisdictions``), within which the Authority and property
owners within the Covered Jurisdictions may enter into
contractual assessments to finance or refinance the installation of distributed generation renewable energy
sources, energy efficiency improvements, water efficiency improvements, seismic strengthening improvements, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and such
other work, infrastructure or improvements as may be
authorized by law from time to time that are permanently
fixed to real property, all in accordance with Chapter 29
of Part 3 of Division 7 of the Streets & Highways Code
of the State of California, as amended (``Chapter 29``)
(the ``Authorized Improvements``).
The Authority will not enter into contractual assessments to finance or refinance the installation of Authorized Improvements with the owner of any
property in a Covered Jurisdiction until such Covered Jurisdiction has provided consent as set forth
in the Resolution of Intention.
The Resolution of Intention, including the exhibits
thereto, is on file with the Secretary of the Board of Directors and reference is made thereto for the particular
provisions thereof.
2. Report. Pursuant to the Resolution of Intention, the
Board of Directors ordered preparation of a report (the
``Report``) at or before the time of the public hearing
that contains all of the matters described in Sections
5898.22 and 5898.23.
3. Contract. Chapter 29 authorizes the Authority and
property owners within the Covered Jurisdictions to
enter into contractual assessments to finance or refinance the installation of Authorized Improvements. The
Report will contain a draft contract (the ``Contract``)
specifying the terms and conditions that would be
agreed to by the Authority and property owners within
each Covered Jurisdiction.
4. Financing Provisions. The Board of Directors determined in the Resolution of Intention that it is in
the public interest for the Authority to finance or refinance the installation of Authorized Improvements
in each Covered Jurisdiction. Under Chapter 29 and
the Improvement Bond Act of 1915, the Authority
may issue bonds that are payable by contractual assessments and the Authority may advance its own
funds to finance work to be repaid through contractual assessments, and may from time to time sell
bonds to reimburse itself for such advances.
5. Public Hearing. A public hearing will be held at
11:00 a.m., on January 16, 2015, at City Hall, 200 S.
Anaheim Blvd., 6th Floor, Anaheim, California
92805, for the purposes of allowing interested persons to object to or inquire about the proposed contractual assessment program or any of its particulars.
The public hearing may be continued from time to
time as determined by the Board of Directors for a
time not exceeding a total of 180 days.
At the time of the hearing, the Report will be summarized and the Board of Directors will afford all
persons who are present an opportunity to comment
upon, object to, or present evidence with regard to
the proposed contractual assessment program, the
extent of the area proposed to be included within the
program, the terms and conditions of the draft Contract, or the proposed financing provisions.
6. More Information. For additional information,
please contact Anthony Stubbs, California Municipal Finance Authority, at (760) 930-1333 or by email at astubbs@cmfa-ca.com.

This is perhaps the most interesting market snapshot since I started writing them
last year! The biggest tell from the data is that last year there was a significantly
lower number of sales. A decline is sales is usually expected during November, as
the holiday season almost always experiences a slowing of the market. However,
with 30 homes sold, November 2014 was no different than the months prior. Also
of interest is it would appear, at first glance, that the market has dipped 19 percent
year-over-year, which would be an alarming statistic to say the least. But when you
look more closely at the 2013 data, you will see it contains a far smaller sample of
home sales and includes a massive $3.6 million sale, which skewed the averages
upward. After removing that single sale from the data and re-calculating the averages, I found a realistic interpretation of the market pricesan increase, on average, in 2014 by approximately 3 percent... A far more pleasant pill to swallow.
