1. PURPOSE:
The purpose of this method statement is to define and establish a systematic
and quality procedure for different activities required for:
Installation of GI Cable Tray and Trunking for the QATAR STEEL 220/66KV
SUBSTATION.
This process ensures that all works are carried out in a safe manner in
accordance with the contract specifications and approved shop drawings.

2. SCOPE:
This method statement covers all activities related to:
Installation of GI Cable Tray and Trunking for the QATAR STEEL 220/66KV
SUBSTATION.
For the satisfaction and approval of the KM, QS, MML

6. PROCEDURE
6.2.1 Handling & Storage:

All materials received at site shall be carefully un-loaded using


necessary manpower and equipments under the supervision of
Electrical and QA/QC Department, such that no damage shall be
caused to the materials.

6..2

All cable trays, trunking and accessories received at site will be


inspected, to confirm their compliance with approved material
submittal.

All the received materials will be presented for QP.(Material Inspection


request)

Cable trays and trunking (pre-galvanized, hot dipped galvanized) shall


be stored in a dry place, fully enclosed / ventilated store.

6..5

Any discrepancies, damage etc., found will be notified and reported


for further action.

6..6

Material found not suitable for the project will be removed from the
site immediately.

6.2.1 Preparation:
6..1

Ensure that the work area is ready and safe to start the installation of
cable trays and trunking.

6..2

Check and ensure that shop drawings and materials ready to use for
installation are latest and approved for construction.

6..3

Ensure that the materials and accessories received from site store for
the installation of cable trays/trunking and accessories are free of rusty
parts and damages.

6..4

The correct size and type of cable trays, trunking & accessories shall
be ascertained from the approved shop drawings prior to installation.

6.2.1 Installation:
6..1

Mark and line out the route of Cable Tray and Trunking as per
approved shop drawings with marking threads.

6..2

The route of Cable Tray and Trunking to be coordinated with other


services and shall be confirmed by the Site Engineer.

6..3

Minimum space from the building structure and other services to be


maintained (200 mm from the nearest point) to facilitate easy
handling and maintenance of cables.

Mark locations of the supports and drill the holes in the slab/wall for
anchor fixing as per appropriate size complying to the approved
drop in anchor as follows:
Supports shall be selected form the following types, to suit the site
conditions:
M12 steel threaded drop rods fixed to ceilings complete with
Gl channels or brackets
Wall support brackets
Cantilever arms
Steel channels.

Where cable trays are installed in roof or exposed to sunlight,


factory made cover shall be fixed to protect the cables from direct
sunlight.

6..8

Cable trays installed on roof shall be supported using Gl brackets or


concrete blocks.

6..9

All straight joints, bends and offset connections shall be made


neatly using manufacturers standard fittings (fish plate and
coupler).
Only when these are inappropriate, fabricated
bends/offsets shall be used subject to the approval of QP.

6..10

Cut portion of Trays and Trunking, shall be made free of sharp


edges by filing and coated with zinc rich and top coat.

6..11

Tray and Trunking joints are to be positioned as close to the


supports as possible, not more than 300 mm. from either side.

6..12

Trunking runs shall be arranged so that the lid is always on top or


side. Lid shall be fixed to the trunking using factory made quick fix
type clips.

At the penetration of cable trays, Trunking or Ladder, GI sheet shall


be covered to the penetration, and rock wool shall be inserted
totally between cables and remaining opening, and seal the
opening with fire sealant, with proper fire sealant.

6..14

Open ends of the trays / trunkings shall be capped with purpose


made end caps.

6..15

Earth continuity shall be ensured throughout the length of the Trays


and Trunking by installing earth bonding straps or copper link
(tinned copper) duly supplied by the same manufacturer/supplier,
between all the joints of Cable Tray and Trunking.

6..16

Upon completion of installation of cable trays/trunking in one area,


the completed work shall be presented to the consultant for
Inspection and shall be protected by providing polyethylene sheet
cover.

7. SAFETY:

Toolbox meeting must be conducted and all hazards have to be


identified before starting work.

Personnel Protective Equipments (PPE) to be used by the Task force


during site work.

Obstacles should be cleared from surrounding area to avoid accidents.

During cutting operation goggles to be worn by the personnel to cutting


debris entering into the eyes.

Approved industrial sockets should be used for taking power supply

All hand and portable power tools to be used shall be of good order and
be used for the purpose intended.

1 Adequate personal protective equipment will be worn such as
hand gloves, safety shoes, safety helmet, safety belt, goggles, etc.
2 Safety Toolbox Talks to be provided to all personnel, to promote
awareness of job hazards and risks and required precautions.
3 Trained and competent personnel will be employed for the work.
Risk Control

4 Safe and reasonable access shall be provided for the working areas.
5 Specified/ recommended industrial sockets/ plugs shall be used
for extension wires.
6 Power supply will be switched off when the power tool is kept idle
for longer period.
7 Sufficient lighting to be provided while night work is to be carried out.
