and1970bytheCongressgovernmentsledbyJawaharlalNehruandhisdaughterIndiraGandhi
respectively,concludedthatBosediedinaplanecrashatTaihokuairport.
ThedeclassifieddocumentsandexhibitsintheNationalArchivesraiseseriousdoubtsaboutthe
veracityofthesereports.However,thethirdandlastreportoftheMukherjeeCommission
establishedin1999hadtrashedtheprobefindings,thoughitdoesntexplainwhatexactly
happenedtoNetaji.ButtheNDAgovernmenttoodidnotdisclosethenewfindingswhichwere
disownedbytheUPAgovernment,whichchosetoacceptthefindingsoftwopreviousreports.
SinhasdepositionbeforetheKhoslaCommissiondisclosedthatNetajiwasimprisonedincell
number45ofYakutskPrisoninSiberia,whereoverhalfamillionslavelabourersperished
Yakutskisthecoldestcityonearth.Butmysteriously,thecommitteedecidednottoprobeSinhas
testimony.VeryfewprisonersinYakutsksurvivedthebrutalconditions,butaformerNKVDagent,
Kozlov,whowasrehabilitatedlaterbytheSovietgovernment,toldSinhaaboutmeetingBosein
Siberia.Sinhahadanadventurouscareer,servingintheRussianArmyin1932asaninterpreter

OnOctober17,1970,Sinha,theninhis60s,wassummonedbeforetheKhoslaCommission
constitutedbyIndira.ThefilesrunningintohundredsofpagesrevealthatSinhahadatroveof
informationregardingNetaji.HetoldthecommissionthatNetajididnotdieintheplanecrashand
wasimprisonedbytheSovietsinSiberia.ThiswasSinhasfirstappearancebeforethe
commissionandunderoath,hetestifiedthatin1954,hemetKozlovinMoscow,whotoldhimthat
NetajiwaslodgedinYakutskPrison.Itappearsfromtheproceedingsthatthecommissionhad

1950.SinhabeganprobingintoNetajisdisappearancein1949.In1950inLeipzig,Germany,he
hadmetKarlLeonhard,aformerAbwehrspywhohadservedtimeinSiberia,afterGermanylost
thewarinUSSR.LeonhardreportedlytoldSinha:IhavecometoknowthatyourleaderBoseis
alsoaprisoner.
SinhadeposedthatinameetingwithNehruonApril13,1950,hehadgiventheprimeminister
thenewinformation,butNehruwasdisinterested.ThoughinitiallyrelationsbetweenUSSRand
Indiawerecoolafter1947,Stalin,whohadrefusedtomeettheIndianAmbassadortoMoscow
VijayalakshmiPandit,gaveanaudiencetoSarvepalliRadhakrishnan,whowasthentheIndian

SinhatoldtheKhoslaCommissionthathewasmakingthechargeswithfullresponsibilitytoprove
thembeforethecommissionandbeforethewideworld.Sinhaalsosaidthathedidnotbelieve
thatthegovernmentwantedmattersregardingBosetocomeoutinthepublicdomain.Hesaid,
Nehruwasaveryverystrongman.WhenKhrushchevcame,Iwasactingasaninterpreter.I
askedhimWillyouinyournextvisitbringNetajiwithyou?ThenRussiaandIndiawillbecome

However,SinhahadaccessedclassifiedSovietdocumentsfromBerlinthatconcernedNetajis
deathbutwasstoppedbythegovernment.LaterheaskedtheKhoslaCommissionwhetherhe
couldquoteatleastthreelinesfromthedocuments,butitappearsfromtheproceedingsthatthe
commissionwasnotinterestedinlisteningtowhatSovietintelligencedocumentshadtosayabout
Netajiandthetopicwaschanged.In1963,SinhawenttoTaipeitoprobeintoNetajisdeath.He
tookhundredsofphotographsoftheallegedcrashsiteandrunway,makingatleast30sorties.He
alsosubmittedfivephotographstotheKhoslaCommissionmarkingtheTaihokurunway.He
madethesensationaldisclosurethattheearlierphotographsshowntothepublicfeaturingthe
crashsitecouldbefakesbecauseanyphotographshowingthecrashsiteshouldhavethe
KeelungRiverintheframewhichwasmissing.Butthecommissionagainchangedthetopic
insteadofprobingthenewphotos.
TheconclusionwhichIimmediatelycametowasthatiftherunwaywassouthofKeelungRiver,
eastwestandinthephotographs,ifthecontourofthehillscome,anyphotographsofthe
wreckagetakenmustshowtheKeelungRiverinbetween.Thereisnowayoutfortakingany
photographwithoutit,Sinhahadtoldthecommission.
Probenotgivensecretfiles
In1956,theShahNawazCommitteerefusedtoconsiderthedocumentAlliedsecretreportNo.
10/Misc/INA.Thedocumentsays,GandhistatedpubliclyatthebeginningofJanuarythathe
believedthatBosewasaliveandinhiding,ascribingittoaninnervoice.Congressmenbelieve
thatGandhisinnervoiceissecretinformation,whichhehadreceived.Thisishoweverasecret
report,whichsaysNehrureceivedaletterfromBosesayinghewasinRussiaandthathewanted
toescapetoIndia.TheinformationallegesthatGandhiandSaratBoseareamongthosewhoare
awareofthis.
Interestingly,thecontentsoftheletterwereomittedfromShahNawazCommitteereport.The
committeedidnotfinditnecessaryeithertovisittheallegedcrashsiteinTaihokutomakefurther
probesthatsuggestedthatNetajiwasalive.
TheFileNo.JMCI/Russia/UOPapers/2001revealedthattheMukherjeeCommissiontriedtoget
intouchwithSinhasfamilymemberstofindoutifhehadleftanydiaryornotespertainingtohis
depositions.ItappearsthatthecommissionwassurprisedattheomissionofSinhasfindinginthe
KhoslaCommissionreport.
Evenin2000,thePrimeMinistersOffice(PMO)hadclaimedprivilegeandtoldthecommission
thatthedocumentsarekeptsecretforensuringtheproperfunctioningofthepublicservice.The
PMOaffidavitsaid:Theseareunpublishedofficialrecords,thedisclosureofwhichwouldcause
injurytothepublicservice.
MYSTERIOUSEVENTSAFTERAUGUST1945
ATopSecretciphertelegramnumber3,338datedOctober20,1945,wassenttotheSecretaryof
StateforIndiafromtheHomeDepartmentoftheBritishGovernmentontreasontrialsafterWorld
WarII.ItrevealsthattheywerenotconvincedaboutNetajisdeathintheplanecrash.TheBritish
governmenthadpreparedalistof13civiliansintheWesterncountriesand12intheEastern
countriesforcaptureandsubsequentprosecution.ThetelegramsaidBosecouldbetriedfor
collaboratingwithenemyifhewasstillalivealthoughhistrialwouldpresentgravedifficulties.
Sinhasaidthathehadreceivednotesdated1946fromBritishmilitarymissionsinBerlinfrom
GeneralStewartandMajorWarrensayingthatBosedidnotdiebutwassufferingatthehandsof
theRussianswhichtheythoughthedeserved.

InadebateinFebruary1947,SardarVallabhbhaiPatelsaidthegovernmentwasnotinaposition
tomakeanyauthoritativestatementonNetajiswhereabouts.Patelalsodeniedthatthe
governmenthadorderedanyinquirytofindoutifNetajiwasdeadoralive,althoughanotedated
August27,1945,preparedthatafterdiscussionsbetweenseniorBritishcommanderLordWavell
andBritishladerAArthurHenderson,theViceroyhadalreadyinitiatedaninquirytoascertain
whetheritwastruethatBosehadbeenkilledinanairaccident.
AsIhavesaid,notonlymyselfbuttheHousewillbeverygladifitturnsouttobetruethatheis
alive,PateltoldtheAssembly.

WhoisDrSatyaNarayanSinha?
Bornin1910inChhapratownofBihar,SinhawasintroducedtoAcharyaKripalani,Acharya
NarendraDevandMahatmaGandhiataveryyoungage,andhespentclosetotwoyearsin
SabarmatiAshramin1924.OnMarch5,1930,SinhasailedforEuropeandstayedatSorrento
nearNapleswithMaximGorky.Fluentinmanyforeignlanguages,includingGermanand
Russian,SinhastudiedmedicineinViennabutendedupasstaffcaptainintheSovietArmyand
servedfortwoyearsfromApril1932toJuly1934.Heservedasaninterpreterforsixmonthsin
SiberiawherehebefriendedmanyRussianandGermanspies.Later,SinhawenttoEthiopia
wherehejoinedMussolinisforces,foughtthealliesduring193536beforereturningtoIndiain
thelate1936.SinhaleftIndiaagainonJanuary1947andservedinvariouscountriesonthe
directionofPanditNehru.Later,hejoinedtheIndianForeignServicein1950butresignedtwo
yearslater.HewaselectedasamemberofthefirstLokSabhafromBiharin1952.Justice
MukherjeeCommission,constitutedbytheNDAgovernmentin2001,wasdismayedbythesheer
negligenceoftheKhoslaCommissionwhichomittedseveralcrucialleadsthatSinhaprovidedto
unraveltheNetajimystery.
WorldsColdestPrisonCamp
SeveralcampswereerectedinYakutskbytheriverLenato
lodgeprisonersofwarandpoliticaldissidents.Theywere
employedinbuildingnewshaftsforcoalmines,roads,
damsetc.Eachcamp,knownasGulag,had500to1,000
captiveslivingwithminimumfacilities.Themajoritycouldnt
survivetheharshweatherandprimitivelivingconditions,
anddiedwhilebuildingroadsinthiscoldestcityonearth.
TheConfusionOverAshes
TheShahNawazCommitteethatwasconstitutedbyNehru
hadconcludedthatashespreservedatRenkojitemplewas
thatofBose.However,declassifiedprincipalpointsofthe
committeewhichlaterformedthebasisofofficialreport
suggestthatthethreemembercommitteewasnot
convincedaboutit.Themembers,includingShahNawaz,
NetajisbrotherSureshChandraBoseandSNMaitra,
opinedthatRenkojiwasveryfarfromthecremationsiteand
althoughtherewasnotamperingwithashes,itcannotbe
definitelysaidthatasheswerethoseofNetaji.But,despitethiscandidadmission,allthree
membersagreedtocoverupthetruthemergingoutoffacts.
AshesfromthecrematoriumtoRenkojitempleisalongwayfirst
toNishiHongajitemple,thentoTokyoetc.Thereisnothingtoshow
thattherewastampering,buttoprovethatitwasdefinitelythoseof
Netaji,muchmorestringentmeasuresrequiredbylawshouldhave
beentakenandadifferentandverystrictprocedurebywayofseals,
guardsetcshouldhavebeentaken.Inallprobability,theashes
couldbesaidtobethoseofNetaji,statedPrincipalPointsofShah
NawazCommissiondraftedonJune30,1956.

Nehruwasaddictedtopower.Hewouldhavedoneallthethingstomakesurethata
personlikeNetajinevercamebacktoIndia.IfNetajiwouldhavebeenback,hewould
havebeenthenationalherotakingtheplacesofNehruandmaybeevenGandhiji.The
Nehrudynastyrulewouldhavenevercomeinsuchacase.

NehruDIDNOTWANTNetajiback,hedidnotwanthimanywhereonthescene.It
suitedhimtobelieveNetajidead,andtodisseminatethatviewaswidelyaspossible.
Sinha'sstatements,basedonhisinquiriesandconversations,thatNetajiwasalive
musthaveshockedandalarmedNehru.Theaffairhadtobescotchedatallcosts,
sincehecouldonnoaccountallowNetajitobebroughtback,becausethenhis
(Nehru's)goosewouldhavebeencooked.HencehisdeliberatelydeflectingSinha's
attention/inquiries,anddiscreditingwhateverhehadunearthedbycallingitAmerican
