Plot

Rub Prez (Brbara Mori) is a poor woman interested in money. She studies at an exclu
sive university because of the efforts of Cristina, her older sister, in order t
o become rich by befriending rich people. Rub is best friends with Maribel de la
Fuente (Jacqueline Bracamontes), a nice and wealthy young woman who has a small
defect in her leg, which prevents her from having a normal social life. Rub is ac
tually jealous of Maribel's status.
Rub eventually meets Maribel's boyfriend Hctor Ferrer (Sebastin Rulli), an architec
t, and his best friend Alejandro Crdenas (Eduardo Santamarina), a doctor. She is
intrigued by Hctor because she knows he is very rich, and marrying a rich man has
always been her ambition in order to leave poverty behind. However, she finds h
erself falling in love with Alejandro. Hctor and Maribel get engaged. Rub starts d
ating Alejandro, but when she finds out that he comes from a middle-class backgr
ound and is not rich, she decides to dump him, though it breaks her heart. She t
hen decides to seduce Hctor.
Hctor falls quickly under Rub's spell. On Hctor and Maribel's wedding day, Hctor lea
ves a desolate Maribel at the altar, and elopes with Rub instead. Now Rub finally
has the lifestyle and money that she has always dreamed of. Nevertheless, she is
still in love with Alejandro, although he assures her that he would never forgi
ve her for what she did to Maribel.
Hctor decides to travel the world with Rub, since he is not entirely sure she has
gotten over Alejandro. They are away for three years, and when they return, Rub d
iscovers that Alejandro is now very rich, and engaged to a woman named Sonia. So
nia dies after having an argument with Rub on a glass bridge. Rub now seduces Alej
andro again and brings him comfort after Sonia's death. He and Rub become lovers
When he learns that Rub had been with Sonia when the latter died, he sends Rub to
prison for it. They seem to hate each other now, but Rub begins to feel love for
him again when she discovers she is expecting his child. Because she does not wa
nt to divorce Hctor and lose her money and status, she lies and tells Hctor that t
he baby is his. She is released from prison, since it is found that Sonia's deat
h was due to her falling through the glass bridge.
Hctor overhears Rub telling her friend Loreto that the child is actually Alejandro
's. Angry and humiliated, Hctor realizes that she never loved him and holds her p
risoner in her own house. Rub manages to get away from Hctor, and the truth finall
y comes out that Alejandro is the father of her child. Alejandro is now aware th
at Maribel has been secretly in love with him and that he is also very fond of h
er, but he decides to stay with Rub for the sake of their baby.
Sometime later, Rub saves her niece Fernanda from getting hit by a car; Rub is hit
instead and has a miscarriage. She blames Hctor for the miscarriage, since he ha
s hit her before because of his jealousy. Hctor tries to prove that Rub actually l
ost her baby after being hit by a car, but only Elena, a woman who is the assist
ant to the Count of Aragn, believes him, since she is love with Hctor. Hctor is hur
t in a car accident and dies before he could tell Alejandro, who is operating on
him trying to save his life, the truth about Rub.
Hctor left everything in his will to Rub much to his parent's chagrin. But Elena,
who hates Rub, makes sure that Rub's money is all lost in the stock market. Alejan
dro is released from prison and finds out how Rub lost their baby. It is also rev
ealed that Elena is expecting Hctor's child, though he never knew it.
Alejandro pays Rub a visit one last time, disgusted by the damage she has done, a
nd tells her that it is over between them: He has chosen Maribel. Rub begs him no

t to leave her, even humiliating herself by getting on her knees. He leaves her
and begins to walk down the stairs. As Rub follows him, screaming that she will n
ever let him go and running down the staircase while holding onto the rail, she
loses her grip on the rail, falls down several stories, and crashes into a glass
table below.

To save her life, doctors had to amputate her leg. When Rub wakes up, she finds o
ut to her horror that her leg was amputated; even more devastating to her, she s
ees that her beautiful face is now full of scars from where the glass cut in. Ru
b escapes from the hospital.
Finding the wedding date of Alejandro and Maribel, she shows up unseen, and draw
s a gun through a crack on a door, aiming at Alejandro but then being unable to
shoot him. She then aims for Maribel, but her sister Cristina, Maribel's maid of
honor, gets in the way. Rub hides in a corner of the churchyard, despondent.
After the wedding, her niece Fernanda wanders over, and Rub shows her scarred fac
e, but Fernanda is not repulsed by it. On the contrary, she sympathizes with her
favorite aunt. When Rub asks her if she would like to continue meeting her secre
tly in order to use her to ruin Alejandro's life, Fernanda happily agrees. Rub is
then seen limping away, dressed in rags.
Years later Fernanda is all grown up, with a striking resemblance to Rub. She vis
its her aunt, who is now living in a one-room flat. After hearing that Alejandro
has returned to Mexico after years of living abroad, Rub tells Fernanda that Ale
jandro and Maribel have a son, and that her job will be to make both Alejandro a
nd his son fall in love with her in order to break Maribel's heart.
Alejandro heads outside the hospital, where he finds Fernanda inside his car. He
is utterly shocked, mistaking her for Rub. She greets him, and The caption, The
End..? appear
