team for the Chicago Bears. The only
thing that was missing was a good
quarterback. He had scouted all the colleges
and even the Canadian and European

could ensure a Super Bowl win.
Then, one night while watching Fox News
he saw a war-zone scene in the West Bank

a young Israeli soldier with a truly incredible

wo nuns were shopping at a 7-Eleven. As they passed the beer cooler, one nun
said to the other, "Wouldn't a nice cool beer or
two taste wonderful on a hot summer evening?"
The second nun answered, "Indeed it would, Sister,
but I would not feel comfortable buying beer, since I
am certain it would cause a scene at the checkout
stand."
"I can handle that without a problem," the other nun
replied, and she picked up a six-pack and headed for
the check-out.
The cashier had a surprised look on his face when
the two nuns arrived with a six-pack of beer. "We use
beer for washing our hair," the nun said. "Back at the convent, we call it Catholic shampoo.
"Without blinking an eye, the cashier reached under the counter, pulled out a package
of pretzel sticks, and placed them in the bag with the beer. He then looked the nun straight
in the eye, smiled, and said, "The curlers are on the house.

as the Saint of the
Little Ways, meaning she believed in
doing the little
things in life well and with great
love.... She is represented by roses.
REMEMBER to make a wish before you read the prayer. That's all
you have to do. There is nothing attached. Just share this with people
and see what happens on the fourth
day. Sorry you have to forward the
message, but try not to break this,
please. Prayer is one of the best free
gifts we receive.

Saint Theresa's Prayer

May today there be peace within.

May you trust God that you are

exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite
possibilities that are born of faith.

May you use those gifts that you

have received, and pass on the love
that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing
you are a child of God.

Let this presence settle into your

Christmas Eve
O

nce there was a little boy who lived in the country. The family had to use an outhouse, and the
little boy hated it because it was so hot in the
summer and freezing cold in the winter and stank all the
time. The outhouse was sitting on the bank of a creek and
the boy was determined that on day he would push that
old outhouse straight into the creek.
One day after a spring rain, the creek was swollen so the
little boy decided today was the day to push the outhouse
into the creek.
He found a large stick and started pushing. Finally, the
outhouse toppled into the creek and floated away.
That night his dad told him they were going to the woodshed after supper. Knowing that meant a spanking, the little
boy asked why. The dad replied, "Someone pushed the outhouse into the creek today. It was
you, wasn't it son?"
The boy answered it
was.
Then
he
thought a moment and
said,
"Dad,
I
read
in
school today
that
George
Wa s h i n g t o n
chopped down a
cherry tree and
didn't get into
trouble because
he told the truth."
The dad replied,
"Well, son, George
Washington's father wasn't in
the cherry tree."

I've got to get this guy! Coach said to

himself. He has the perfect arm!
So, he brings him to the States and teaches
him the great game of football. And the
Bears go on to win the Super Bowl.
The young man is hailed as the great hero
of football, and when the coach asks him
what he wants, all the young man wants is to
call his mother.
Mom, he says into the phone, I just won
the Super Bowl!
I don't want to talk to you, the old woman
says. You are not my son!
I don't think you understand, Mother, the
young man pleads. I've won the greatest
sporting event in the world. I'm here among
thousands of my adoring fans.
No! Let me tell you! his mother retorts.
At this very moment, there are gunshots all
around us. The neighborhood is a pile of rubble. Your two brothers were beaten within an
inch of their lives last week, and I have to
keep your sister in the house so she doesn't
get raped! The old lady pauses, and then
tearfully says,
I will never forgive you for making us
move to Chicago .

Turning Heads
For More Than
80 YearsTap Dancer
Sid Hallburn

The Local News, January 01, 2015 hbnews1@aol.com 714.914.9797

id Hallburn has turned heads for more

than 80 years as an incredible tap
dancer. At 91, he's still performing and
receiving rave reviews at The Adventurer's
Club of Los Angeles, Nixon Presidential Library and Museum, Long Beach Veteran's
Hospital, churches, schools, senior citizen
homes, you name it.

He loves the crowds and they love him.

Twinkling eyes, gracious smile, buff body,
animated hands and magical feet. No wonder Sid is a crowd-pleaser.
First stepping into the spotlight as a 4year-old, running up on a Los Angeles stage
where legendary banjo king Eddie Peabody
was playing, the crowd went wild with his
impromptu dance routine.
Eddie was so impressed, he asked Sid's
mom if her kid could tour with his troupe.
She said, "Thanks but no thanks" but later
took him to the famous Meglin Kiddies in
Hollywood, where former Ziegfeld Girl,
Ethel Meglin and her assistants, taught him
to tap dance. He performed in their shows
all over, including in the Rose Bowl over 80
years ago.
Ethel encouraged him, along with some
other youngsters, named Shirley Temple.
Judy Garland, Jackie Cooper, Ann Miller
and Mickey Rooney. "I was never a star but
it was fun being around them," said the modest man, who said he was a backup dancer
for Hal Roach Studios, "The Little Rascals,"
and MGM.
"It was an amazing experience when Gene
Kelly walked into the room, everyone
stopped talking. He had such charisma,
charm and talent. Gene was very down-toearth and friendly, whether you were a star
or not."
"I learned from him to always be on time,
perform to your best--no matter how you
felt--have fun and put smiles on the audience's faces."
Dancing also was excellent exercise. Sid's
good friend, Jack LaLanne, appreciated his
skills, enthusiasm, sincerity, honesty and
positive, caring attitude.
"Jack taught me to never give up, that
anything is possible and you can achieve
your dreams if you just keep working at it."

Sid and Jack were born in San Francisco

and he taught the fitness legend's son, Jon,
how to swim at 9-months-old. (He had
taught water safety in the Air Force.) Sid still
uses his pal's Jack LaLanne Power Juicer
and liquid vitamins.
The multi-talented Huntington Beach resident, who taught Special Education for Los

veteran, has always believed in giving back
to the community.
He volunteers weekly at the Long Beach
Veteran's Hospital ("trying to cheer people
up"), the Costa Mesa Historical Society Museum (helps clean it up weekly), the Huntington Beach Historical Society (helps in
many ways, including at the annual Civil
War Days), the American Legion and many
other groups.
The father of 3 kids and 5 grandkids loved
his late wife, Lois, who sang with the champion "Sweet Adelines" and taught Special
Education in the LA City Schools.
The versatile entertainer plays several instruments and has produced shows as well
as performed with the ukulele sensation, Bill
"the Duke of Uke" Tapia, when he was over
100.
Sid, who's also in the Masters Hall of
Fame for Martial Arts, has always believed
in starting his day with exercise. Over a 45minute period, he stretches, lifts weights,
rides a stationary bike, walks on a treadmill
and runs in place.
The amazing inspiration still turns heads,
is fit as a fiddle, looks like he's out of Hollywood Central Casting, and continues to put
happy songs in many hearts and smiles on
many faces, just like he did 8 decades ago.
What advice does he have for the rest of
us? "Exercise. Love God. Be honest with
yourself. Be positive. Eat right and always
give back to others. Make the world a better
place, one person at a time. It's a gift to be
here and to make a difference!"
As his old friend Gene Kelly would say,
always enjoy "singing in the rain."
You can contact Sid about performing (individually or with "The Happy Old Guys
and the Kids," featuring Samantha, Taylor,
Dylan and himself) at (714) 968-7791.

Next in line was the famous BEERSTER, a 1936 Buick race car
which was a two time winner of the Great American Race.
Participates included 61 spectacular show winning automobiles such
as a Rolls Royce Corniche, 1937 Bentley, Lamborghini Diablo,
McLaren Mercedes, several Ferraris, 1937 Morgan, an El Dorado
Cadillac, Tiffany, 2015 Morgan, 1949 Studebaker, Alfa Romero, 17
different hot rods, a super special 1952 Ford low rider panel truck, and
11 Corvettes lead by an authentic 1967 Camero Indy Pace Car. The
parade was topped off by a genuine World War II 1943 Army Jeep.
The line of unique show cars began to tour the five Huntington Harbour Islands. After one hour, we made our morning refueling stop
for mimosas, pastries and Christmas carols at a spectacular $5 million
water front home courtesy of Mr. Richard Ashby. Upon arrival the
guests were warmly greeted by CHOCO, the Bear, from Childrens
Hospital.
We then continued cruising the islands for another hour and made
our scheduled lunch stop at Buon Gusto Italian Restaurant for a Private
Party where three Best of Show Awards were given:
#1. The Best Christmas Decorated Car
#2. The Best Holiday Dressed Couple
#3. Mayor Jill Hardy, presented the prestigious Mayors

12 Things That Will Be

Less Expensive in 2015
Falling gas prices and an end to tariffs on Chinese imports will affect prices on everything from food to electronics.

By Josie Rubio
Josie Rubio says..."The Great Recession may have technically
ended over five years ago, but that's probably a surprise to millions
of Americans still worrying about their budgets. A modicum of relief
is on the way in 2015, as prices fall on some popular goods and services -- including one major necessity that affects many others: gas.
From cranberry sauce to a Kia sedan, read our predictions for
items that will drop in price in the coming year. Peruse the list, then
consider also checking out what items are increasing in price in 2015
-- as well as signing up for the DealNews Select Newsletter, so you

Gas Prices

James Brey/Getty Images

According to the government's Energy Information Administration, gas prices will average about $2.60 a gallon in 2015 -- even
lower than the initial November prediction of $2.94 a gallon. In eight
states, prices could even slip below $2 a gallon. If it seems to be
good to be true, consider some gas stations in Texas and Oklahoma
were already offering gas below $2 a gallon in December.

Transatlantic Flights

Though fuel prices are falling, most air travel prices are increasing.
However, the price of transatlantic flights could decrease because of
added flight capacity, according to the American Express Global
Business Travel annual forecast. Several airlines are also offering
cheap transatlantic trips, including Norwegian Airlines, which started
offering flights between London and New York City for about $255
each way in June 2014, as well as bargain flights from Los Angeles
and Fort Lauderdale. Iceland-based WOW Air recently started offering flights between the U.S. and Europe for as low as $99 each
way.

Cloud Storage

Cloud storage companies are continuing to cut prices and

increase storage in what's being called "the race to zero."
Consider the trend this past year: When Amazon dropped
cloud storage prices by 22 percent, Microsoft did the same
the very next day. Across the board, price drops continued
throughout the year, and the trend is set to continue.
In fact, Aaron Levie, CEO of cloud company Box, recently
predicted "a future when cloud storage is free and infinite."
Amazon is considered to be at the forefront of keeping things
competitive, and the company recently added unlimited
photo storing services for Prime members. Just consider storing all those nudes photos someplace safe.

The much-anticipated Apple Watch is set for release in early 2015,

at a price of $349 to potentially thousands, and an estimated 10 percent of consumers report that they're considering buying one. If
you're looking to spend less, technology research firm Gartner (IT)
predicts that smartwatches will make up to 40 percent of wrist-worn
devices by 2016 and the increased demand for wearable tech will
cause prices from some manufacturers to drop below $150. In fact,
some smartwatches could be as cheap as $30 in 2015, and Chinese
company Xiaomi sells a fitness tracker for only $13.

(like GPS Devices and Software)

Since 2010, the top 40 cable channels have lost more than 3 million viewers because of "cord cutters" quitting cable TV, and cord
nevers, who have never paid for cable at all and instead watch shows
online. The big news in 2015 is that HBO will start to offer a streaming service for nonsubscribers in April, just in time for "Game of
Thrones." CBS also is offering a la carte on-demand TV with its
CBS All Access service.
For this reason, too, pay-TV providers are increasingly looking to
lure the "cord shaving" crowd, offering cheaper bundles with fewer
channels at low prices in the hopes that these customers will eventually upgrade. And some even say that cable bundles might be the
better deal, as a la carte TV options can add up, making cable bundles
the better deal in some cases. So weigh your options before embarking on winter binge-watching. (Check out our feature on cable-cutting myths.)

of smartphone sales is slowing, according to a forecast from International Data Corporation, meaning competitive pricing and lower
prices. Those looking for smartphones for less than $200 can also
expect more for their money, including HD screens.

4K TVs

This Black Friday, DealNews saw super-cheap prices for

Ultra HD 4K TVs, ranging in price from $375 to $1,300.
(Keep in mind that in 2013, prices were in the $5,000 to
$7,000 range, and $1,099 was the lowest price.) These TVs
that offer a 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution are hailed as the
next big thing, and as they become more popular, prices can
be expected to drop. (Remember when VCRs were expensive? Remember VCRs?)
And there's more to actually watch on 4K TVs as well.
Amazon recently started 4K streaming limited content at no
additional cost to Prime members. And Netflix has recently
expanded its offerings at $3 more for 4K content, but as competition increases, prices for content should drop. (Check out
our discussion on whether it's time to buy a 4K TV deal.)

Smartphones

By the end of 2015, LTE smartphones are expected to be

as cheap as $60, even before subsidies. The global growth

Speaking of China, after negotiations at the Asia-Pacific Economic

Cooperation summit in Beijing in November, tariffs that have added
25 percent to the cost of tech products in the United States could be
a thing of the past. According to a White House statement, more than
200 tariffs will be eliminated, potentially affecting the prices of medical equipment, GPS devices, computer software, and video game
consoles. We'll most likely see lower prices on products manufactured in China, possibly even Apple products.

Video Game Consoles

As a special holiday promotion, the retail price of the Xbox One

dropped from $399 to $349 through January 3, 2015. During Black
Friday, we saw a lot of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 deals for even
less; in fact, the Xbox outsold the PS4 because of these deals, and
we suspect Microsoft will be hesitant to inflate that price back up
again. And even if they do, retailers might be forced to continue offering deals if customers are now accustomed to the lower price
point. Plus, with the recent trade agreement between the United
States and China expected to reduce prices of video game consoles,
it's a safe bet that gaming systems will cost less in 2015.

Kia Forte

The 2015 model of the Kia Forte is $10 less than last year's model,
making it cheaper than the Nissan Sentra. And if $10 in savings doesn't sound significant, keep in mind that this makes the Forte officially
the year's least expensive compact car.

Butter

Since 2013, butter prices in the U.S. doubled, reaching an all-time

high of $2.85 a pound in September. By October, butter had fallen
to $2.53 a pound and dropped by a third in November, with lower
overall dairy prices predicted by the USDA in 2015.

Cranberries

The cranberry sauce for your Thanksgiving feast may have cost a
bit less this year, and prices may continue to drop. News of cranberry
excess surfaced as early as 2013, and to deal with the cranberry surplus -- nearly at 100 percent with 16 million barrels -- the U.S. government just purchased 680,000 barrels' worth in juice, sauce, and
dried berries for distribution in food banks and schools."

HBPD DUI Checkpoint Nets 5

T

he Huntington Beach Police

Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Friday,
December 19th on Bolsa Chica near
McFadden between the hours of
7:40 p.m. and 2:20 a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that
have the greatest opportunity for
achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the
greatest safety for officers and the
public. DUI/Drivers License checkpoints have been shown to lower
DUI deaths and injuries. A major
component of these checkpoints are
the deterrent effects it has on those
who might drive drunk or drug impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to
use sober designated drivers. According to the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective docu-

mented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also

yielding considerable cost savings
of $6 for every $1 spent. Ninety
Percent of California drivers approve of checkpoints. Below are the
results from this evenings checkpoint. 2533 Vehicles through checkpoint 999 Vehicles Screened 11
Standardized Field Sobriety Tests
(SFST) administered 5 DUI-Alcohol suspects arrested 5 Drivers cited
for operating a vehicle while unlicensed 1 Citation issued The Huntington Beach Police Department
will be conducting another
DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on
Friday, February 13th, 2015, in our
ongoing commitment to lowering
deaths and injuries upon our streets
and highways. The checkpoint was
funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through
the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration.

One Of OCs 100 Most Influential - 2014

AGE: 33

JOB: Lead singer of Avenged Sevenfold

WHY HES AN INFLUENCER: In

2014, Shadows and Avenged Sevenfold
cemented their status as the most globally preferred music act to emerge from
Orange County, filling venues from Santiago, Chile, to Stavanger, Norway. The
band, which when played 250-individual clubs in Orange County, headlined a
day of the prestigious Download Festival in England, playing for 80,000. The
band was second on the bill to Metallica
at Germanys Rock im Park and Rock
am Ring fests, which drew far more than
120,000 fans. The band also expanded
its video games presence. Right after appearing in Call of Duty: Black Ops II
in 2012 by releasing its personal appprimarily based game, Hail to the King:
Deathbat.

THOUGHTS ON ENTREPRENEURSHIP: I feel you just have to be constructive. If you are superior adequate,
factors will modify for you and with you.

INSPIRATION: I adore listening to

music and producing it. All the things else
that takes place is just icing on the cake.

CANNOT DO DEVOID OF: Golf is,

like, an obsession. It is just about as terrible as music for me.

WHATS NEXT: Shadows and his band

mates will wrap up their present tour subsequent month with a swing via Asia,
which includes stops in China, Indonesia
and Malaysia. The rest of 2015 will be
spent preparing material for their next
album, slated to be released in 2016.

The Local News, January 01, 2015 hbnews1@aol.com 714.914.9797

BIO: Shadows, whose true name is Matt

Sanders, was born and raised in Huntington Beach. At Huntington Beach Higher,
he played varsity basketball and, in 1999,
formed the metal outfit Avenged Sevenfold, with guitarists Synyster Gates and
Zacky Vengeance and the late drummer
Jimmy The Rev Sullivan. The band has
released six studio albums, the final two
debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard album
chart. He lives in Huntington Beach.

OPERATE PHILOSOPHY: For us,

its about maintaining our integrity and
doing what we do, however, changing
slightly with the occasions (with social
media) to make sure everybody is involved. At the identical time, we keep
hungry. We dont ever want to place out
a negative record.

Another issue to monitor in 2015 is the economic impact on intercollegiate athletics of the
NCAAs recently approved rule changes. While
most of the changes apply only to the big five
conferences, they are bound to have a trickledown effect on lower levels. The new rules could
affect the ability of smaller schools to support existing programs. Two recent announcements
highlight the stark disparities: The University of
Michigan will pay Jim Harbaugh $8 million per
year to coach its football team after the University of Alabama-Birmingham cancelled its football program due to unsustainable costs.

Stunning X-Ray Portrait Of The Sun Snapped

By NASA's NuSTAR Space Telescope

The Local News, January 01, 2015 hbnews1@aol.com 714.914.9797

he Huffington Post | By David Freeman had his eye on this one...."The photo is the
first taken of the sun by NuSTAR and is the "most sensitive solar portrait ever taken in
high-energy X-rays," according to NASA. The green and blue portions of the image
show highly energetic X-ray emissions. The red represents ultraviolet light captured by the
Solar Dynamics Observatory, another NASA space telescope. In addition to looking pretty
spectacular, the photo may point the way to some pretty important science.
Space scientists are hopeful that by gazing at the sun, NuSTAR may be able to help explain
why the sun's outer atmosphere (corona) is so blazingly hot (1 million degrees Celsius) while
its surface is much cooler (6,000 degrees Celsius).
The key to this decades-old puzzle may be smaller versions of the colossal solar flares familiar to solar astronomers. At this point these so-called "nanoflares" are still hypothetical,
but scientists believe that they, in combination with big solar flares, may be the sources of the
corona's intense heat.
"NuSTAR will be exquisitely sensitive to the faintest X-ray activity happening in the solar
atmosphere, and that includes possible nanoflares," Dr. David Smith, a solar physicist and
member of the NuSTAR team at the University of California, Santa Cruz, said in a written
statement.
The idea of using NuSTAR to look at the sun surfaced about seven years ago, long after
the space telescope's design and construction were under way. When she first heard of the
idea, Dr. Fiona Harrison, a professor of physics and astronomy at CalTech and the mission's
principal investigator, was more than a little skeptical."
X-rays stream off the sun in this image combining data from NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) space telescope, overlaid on a photo taken by
NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).

with a brew of that old Christmas fave..."recals"..."More
than 7 million Keurig Mini Plus Brewing Systems sold
over the past five years in the U.S. and Canada are being recalled
because they can spray hot water, leading to 200 incident reports
and 90 reports of burns, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Tuesday.
The incidents have involved hot water spraying from the brewing machines. Keurig reported that the problem is most likely to
occur when two cups of hot drink are made one after the other
and recommends that consumers remain at least an arm's length
away when using one until they are fixed.
Consumers with the recalled Keurig machines should contact
Keurig Green Mountain to arrange for a free repair. Keurig can
be reached weekdays at 844-255-7886 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Eastern, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekends or at
keurig@inmar.com. Additional information is on the Keurig recall site. The call center will be closed Dec. 25 through Jan. 1.
Sold for About $100
The machines were sold at major retailers including Kmart
(SHLD), Kohl's (KSS), Target (TGT) and Walmart (WMT) and
online between December 2009 and this month for about $100.
The recalled machines are the model K10 (which was previously identified as model number B31). They have identification
numbers that begin with "31" followed by a string of other numbers that are printed on a white sticker on the bottom of the
brewer. These single-serve brewers
measure about 11 inches high
and came in 13 colors with silver trim.
Each has three brewing options: 6 ounces, 8 ounces and
10 ounces. They were made
between December 2009 and
July 2014. The recalled serial
numbers, listed here, will
identify those involved in the
recall."

very year brings opportunities and challenges. One of the

major challenges we will still have to contend with in 2015
is the effects of the drought that has wreaked havoc up and
down the state of California for the past three years.
Even a wet winter cant make up, totally, for the depressed water storage conditions sustained over
such a long period of time. But, challenges can
also offer unexpected opportunities.
In November, the citizens of California passed
the Water Quality, Supply and Infrastructure Act
of 2014 (Water Bond), which will allocate $7.54
billion towards statewide water projects and programs in the coming years. The Orange County
Water District is taking this opportunity to submit proposals in hopes of funding several
projects that ultimately would enhance the reliability and quality of its water portfolio.
It could allow the District to expand current projects like the Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS), which takes treated wastewater and creates a new source
of drinking water. It seems like yesterday, but the GWRS will soon celebrate its seventh anniversary as the largest water purification system of its kind in the world. It
was one of the major factors in keeping the Orange County Groundwater Basin within
safe operating levels this past year.
The water bond could also finance research into other water sources such as ocean
desalination.
The Orange County Water District has a mandate to provide reliable sources of
water. As such, research into all available options has to be embraced. One of these
options is the proposed Poseidon Water Huntington Beach Desalination Project.
OCWD hosted a local desalination workshop on Dec. 10. The reason for the meeting was to allow the Board of Directors, staff, water retail representatives, and members of the general public to listen to the results of the Clean Energy Capital financial
report with regard to the Poseidon project. Information is crucial to the decision-making process and I encourage you to visit the Ocean Desal Exploration page on the
OCWD website for desalination information and to attend meetings.
Several interesting opportunities and discoveries appear to be on the horizon in the
coming year and the District is well equipped to maximize them.
OCWD has a long history of trusted leadership in the groundwater industry locally,
statewide, nationally, and even internationally. It was honored and received the following recognitions last year.
The Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize, an international water award, was presented
from the country of Singapore to OCWD for its pioneering work in groundwater
management and water reclamation using advanced water reuse technologies, as

well as for its achievements in public policy and

community outreach. This took place in June and
I had the pleasure of giving the keynote speech at the
event.
In April of this year the U.S. Water Alliance, at a meeting in Washington DC
honored the Orange County Water District and the Orange County Sanitation District with the U.S. Water Prize. This was given for their joint project, the Groundwater Replenishment System, and for their role as global leaders in reclamation
and reuse.
In October, OCWD, the City of
Anaheim, the Irvine Ranch Water
District, and Yorba Linda Water
District jointly received a California Association of Local
Agency Formation Commissions (CALAFCO) Government
Leadership Award. All were recognized for manifesting characteristics of effective leadership,
through the successful completion
of a major annexation into OCWD,
and for steadily paving the way politically, economically, and equitably
for an annexation that meets water
supply needs while further promoting
sustainability of regional groundwater
resources.
There are exciting times ahead and the
OCWD board and staff are ready to meet
the challenges to provide you with quality
and reliable water.
(Former 1st Vice President Cathy Green
was chosen as president of the Orange
County Water District at its December 17
board meeting.)

Dear EarthTalk:
Are there still outspoken global warming deniers in Congress or
the mainstream media? If so, what
do they say when presented with scientific facts and anecdotal evidence pointing to an increasingly warming atmosphere?

News and elsewhere are vocal in their skepticism about humans (leading) role in climate change.
But regardless of how persuasive some of these pundits
might sound, the facts speak for themselves. IPCC reports
that human influence on the climate system is clear, with
greenhouse gas emissions driven largely by economic and
population growth skyrocketing to record levels and leading to atmospheric conditions unprecedented in at least the
last 800,000 years. IPCC adds that greenhouse gas emissions are extremely likely to have been the dominant
cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century
and that warming will be a very likely catalyst for increased heat waves, extreme precipitation events, warmer
oceans and higher sea levels.

ne hundred years ago this week, France

launched its first major offensive against
Germany in World War I. The fight took
place in the winegrowing region of Champagne,
which the German army had invaded just weeks
after hostilities broke out. Nearly 200,000 lives
were lost in the three-month battle.
Champagne witnessed some of the war's heaviest
fighting. The region's two largest cities -- Reims and
Epernay -- were bombarded for three years. Locals
took shelter in the caves under houses like Veuve
Clicquot, Krug, and Taittinger. The vineyards became battlefields.
Yet production continued. Where bombs could be
avoided, women and children harvested grapes. Famously, Jeanne Krug sought winemaking advice via
post from her husband, Joseph II, who was a prisoner of war. Praising Krug as a "brave lady," the
British sales representative for the Champagne
house would later remember selling "the entire
cuvee of 1915 in record time."
A full century has passed since the Battle of
Champagne. But wine remains inextricably tied to
conflict. And the bottles that survive continue to
offer a window to other times and places.
I'll never forget the evening I tasted a perfectly
cellared bottle of Bordeaux from 1919. The wine
still had life in it; it was delicious and utterly fascinating. But more importantly, the wine inspired a
conversation about the lives of those who made it.
The First World War officially ended in 1919, so
that wine was made while cleaning up from the
wreckage and hoping for a brighter future.
Europe, of course, only had a brief respite. Fighting would once again ravage the continent just 20
years later.

War, Wine and

Giving Thanks

At Christmas

The Hugels, a winemaking family in Alsace, still

recall the Christmas of 1939. A year earlier, the
Nazis conquered Austria. After seizing Czechoslovakia in 1939, Hitler signed pacts with Italy and the
Soviet Union. The world knew that another war was
just around the corner.
As Donald Kladstrup and Petie Kladstrup wrote
in Wine and War, "On Christmas Eve, the Hugels
gathered together . . . but it was a somber affair. In
previous years, the house had always been decorated, everyone
exchanged gifts
and then sat
down to a sumptuous dinner that
included some
wonderful wines.
But not this year.
No one was in
the mood. Everyone feared that
this would be
their last Christmas as French
citizens."
The story of war and wine continues today.
Consider Domaine de Bargylus, the only commercial winery in Syria. Located on a mountainside
in the port city of Latakia, where winemaking dates
back nearly 4,000 years, the winery was launched
in 2003, when Karim and Sandro Saad sought to

honor their father by

planting a first-rate
vineyard. Like 10 million other Syrians, the
Saads fled their
homes to escape the
bloody
uprising
David White against Syrian dictator
Bashar al-Assad. So
today, they run their winery from Beirut, Lebanon.
The brothers can't return home; as businessmen,
they're prime targets for kidnappers. So they issue
directives to their staff via phone and email. Occasionally, they'll even hire taxi drivers to shuttle
grapes across the border.
Lebanon has been spared
from most of Syria's bloodshed. But the owners of the 47
wineries in Lebanon's Bekaa
Valley recognize that war is
never far away. Indeed, the region's eastern edge harbors
fighters from both ISIS and alNusrah Front.
With the holidays now here,
many of us will spend the coming days surrounded by family
and friends, eating great food
and drinking great wine. Just as
wine is no stranger to war, neither is the world. So
this holiday season, be sure to give thanks.

Tips On Choosing Your Car Insurance Wisely

Are you paying too much?

ayne O'Donnell and Auto Blog team

up to insure we are insured properly..."Even insurance experts say
they often forget to review their policies
to see if they can get a better deal. I
should know better, but am as guilty of
that as anyone. That's especially true
when you consider that the much-advertised company we bought our low-cost
policy from didn't prove to be such a bargain after we had a fender bender and
needed some other body work. More importantly, a financial advisor for my family told us a few months ago that we need
an umbrella liability policy that protects
all of our assets, whether we get in a serious car crash that injures others or
someone gets hurt in our home and decides to sue.
So we really need to shop around and that's what
I'm doing. Here are the four big things I learned from
this exercise (and many years of writing about cars):

UMBRELLA POLICIES MAKE

GOOD SENSE
Umbrella insurance is a policy that increases your
liability coverage that is, what you'll owe someone
else if you're responsible for injuring them or damaging their property. It covers more types of claims at a
higher limit. Trustedchoice.com, a company that represents 140,000 independent insurance agents, says
these policies can benefit anyone who drives, owns

or rents a home and has assets to protect. Seeing that's

almost anyone who has been saving money for a few
years, it's something worth looking at. Of course, like
any type of insurance, you need do a cost-benefit
analysis to see if it's right for you. How much can you
afford to spend each month and what do you stand to
lose if you don't pony it up?
While you're pondering that, consider this: Nearly
15 of people with high net worth don't have this coverage, Trusted Choice says. An average cost of about $380 per year
or about $32 a month can get you
$1 to 2 million worth of protection.

UNINSURED AND
UNDERINSURED MOTORIST
COVERAGE A MUST.
If you suffer a life-changing injury and
can't go back to work after a crash caused
by a driver without enough insurance,
your life and future can hang in the balance, says Philadelphia lawyer Dean
Weitzman. The only way you can be adequately and fairly compensated after
such an event is to have the highest
amount of UM and UIM that you can afford, he says.
There's even a way to do that without spending more
on your existing policy: Just increase your vehicle
collision deductible.
"If you're going to take a chance, take the chance
on the property damage," Weitzman wrote on the
MyPhillyLawyer.com blog. "That's better than having
the unknown risk of having life changing catastrophic
injuries and not having the money to pay for care.

COLLISION COVERAGE
RAISES QUESTIONS.
It may or may not make sense for
you. Our hunk o'junk 2001 SUV

household is on its way to any
charity that might want it, most
likely for parts. We haven't paid
collision coverage on it for awhile,
but I just realized (by actually looking at my policy!) that we've been
paying what's known as comprehensive coverage, which covers
non-crash things that could happen
to my car. I don't care what happens
to this car so just saved, well, a
whopping $20 a year.
While skipping collision coverage for a car worth $3,000 or less
may seem like a smart way to save

WATCH OUT FOR MINIMUM

COVERAGE
States' legal minimums for insurance coverage
should be considered just that minimums. Jay Edelstein, a Philadelphia accidents attorney, strongly recommends policies with much higher limits. If you're
held liable in a crash and only have the state minimum
required coverage, you risk being held personally responsible for paying the other guy's damages.
If you don't have any liability coverage, you're responsible for paying for the pain, suffering, and other
personal hardships and some economic damages, such
as lost wages, that you cause, says Michael Reitman,
a Clark, N.J. attorney who handles negligence cases.
The insurer won't give you a lawyer or pay for one
for you if you're sued. Your assets will be in jeopardy
and you risk having your wages garnished if a judgment is entered against you. And, if you don't have
coverage and someone hits you, you can't sue, says
Reitman. I'm convinced!

money, the cost of replacing any vehicle

you actually need after a total loss can
prove overwhelming if you don't have
collision coverage. (We wouldn't replace
ours until our teen starts to drive.)

Whats In a
Credit Score?

ortgage rates are primarily dictated by

movements in the bond market. The
bond yields determine the overall
range of rates available to the public. Exactly
where in that range someone will fall when applying for a loan is largely determined
by their credit score. Understanding how credit scores
work will help
homeowners secure the best
rates.
The top
factor in a
credit score
surrounds
the payment
history. This accounts for 35% of
the overall score. At
the most basic level, the
easiest way to maintain a
strong credit score is to make
payments on time. But even if
you slip a little, the system is
forgiving. A payment will not
show up as late on the credit report until it is at least 30 days past
due. So if you make a mistake and
post a payment a few days late, you
will likely incur the late fee with your
creditor, but there will be no impact on
your credit report.
The later the payment, the greater the impact
to the score. In other words, 60 days late is
worse than 30 days, and 90 days late is worse
than 60 days. Severe transgressions such as collections, bankruptcies, and foreclosures will
have an even more detrimental impact on a

80% of their availcredit score.

The Marines of Morenci - They led some of

the scrappiest high school football and basketball
teams that the little Arizona copper town of Morenci
(pop. 5,058) had ever known and cheered. They enjoyed roaring beer busts. In quieter moments, they
rode horses along the Coronado Trail, stalked deer
in the Apache National Forest. And in the patriotic
camaraderie typical of Morenci's mining families, the
nine graduates of Morenci High enlisted as a group in
the Marine Corps. Their service began on Independence Day, 1966. Only 3 returned home.

The Buddies of Midvale - LeRoy Tafoya, Jimmy

Martinez, Tom Gonzales were all boyhood friends and
lived on three consecutive streets in Midvale, Utah on
Fifth, Sixth and Seventh avenues. They lived only a few
yards apart. They played ball at the adjacent sandlot ball
field. And they all went to Vietnam. In a span of 16 dark
days in late 1967, all three would be killed. LeRoy was
killed on Wednesday, Nov. 22, the fourth anniversary of
John F. Kennedy's assassination. Jimmy died less than
24 hours later on Thanksgiving Day. Tom was shot dead
assaulting the enemy on Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
