is that the real recording of #JUNIVERSE will be a good mixture of information and entertainment, living

the diversity and creativity at JU.
It would be wrong to interpret #JUNIVERSE as a beauty contest or bigbrother casting - the true motivation
behind the recordings, especially the
passion and love for living and learning in an international environment

How did you feel right after the announcement that you are among the
winners?

Actually Im super surprised, as I was

not expecting it. At first I thought it
was going to be a popularity thing, but
I think people actually took it to heart
and wanted to pick someone that can
represent Jacobs. After the announcement I thought, no way, Im only
a freshman, and have not even
been here for a semester yet. But I
am with the rowing team, and I think
people really took that into account. I
would definitely like to represent the
team because I think we are a huge
part of the university, even though
people may not be aware of us. We
train very hard and we possess a great
team spirit. In #JUNIVERSE, I want
to represent myself and everyone else
on the team. If we are not practicing,
we are usually studying until late at
night and get up early next morning
for practice thats what I really want
to show because thats how we work
as a team and reveals the spirit of this
university: We study hard, and have
fun at the same time.
Do you already have a plan for what you
want to record next semester?

Obviously I will show the amount of

studying that I do, but thats not the

reason that brings people to colleges

they still want to have fun as well!
So I will probably show people the
events that we have on campus, also
some things that I can do with the rowing team, and I hope to maybe get
students involved in some clubs on
campus next semester.

happiness. Most of all though, to be

completely honest, I am a bit nervous
because this is a big responsibility to
be chosen for such a role and I really hope I can live up to the expectations! I am really looking forward
to it though and feel very happy and
privileged to be chosen.

Very excited! I didnt expect that... I

just thought it was a fun idea, now I
have a job!
Do you already have a plan for what you
want to record next semester?

Yeah, theres a lot of stuff going on

in Krupp College that I would like
to show people. For example, the
Valentines Day party, and hopefully,
the college is going to celebrate that
we get our servery back. The project
could help me collect data for my thesis because Im hoping to do a case
study. The project is going to be a
more fun activity to get started. Generally, I would like to choose some
specific things that I can introduce
to people and otherwise I will show
the normal side of my life, stuff like
party, friends, and the type of friends
that you make for life.

As soon as I found out, some of my

teammates had some great ideas such
as wearing the camera during Jacobs
football games which I think would
be really cool. I would also like to
show downtown Bremen quite a lot
because I spent the summer there and
really love the city. I also hope to use
the GoPros full potential because it
can make some awesome footage if
used right. Most of all, I am looking
forward to capturing the social life
here, such as mealtimes, CIDs and all
sorts of events. I think most of all I
want to show the diversity of Jacobs,
of its people and of what students can
do here, so for that reason I think I
will be trying new activities to show
everything that Jacobs has to offer.

intense organization and practice definitely paid off: Piano to Forte 2014

was involved in the competition. But
there were a lot of good people that
applied, and it was really nice. Now
Im super excited, and next semester
will be my last semester at JU, so I
really want to make the most use of it.
Do you already have a plan for what you
want to record next semester?

I kind of thought about it, and Ill

definitely include what I do with my
friends, and what I do creatively, and
also what I do with my host family,
since I meet them a lot and do a lot
of activities with them. But anyway,
friends first! (laugh) I think I will go
more for the things that I do outside
the classroom, so Ill focus on the living at JU aspect.
WATCH OUT FOR THE CAMERAS!

Now that we have four new ambassadors, what will happen the next?
According to Ms. Heise, the winners
will record around eight to ten videos
within the spring 2015 semester of
their free choice, and will take around
two weeks for one video. When the
recordings and video editing are
done, they will be immediately distributed via social media, online
platforms, school websites and related intermediaries. Also, after spring
2015, #JUNIVERSE will have the
possibility of becoming a tradition
at Jacobs University if the program
gets the expected feedback. Lets
wait for the first videos to come out
inspiration is JU!

The core organizing team had already started its preparations last semester so that marketing the concert to
the Freshies and acquiring sponsors
could take place during the break.
Additionally, for the first time in Piano to Fortes history was the concert
supported by two patrons: Angelika
Kirchschlager and Elisabeth Fuchs,
two outstanding professional musicians from Austria.
With the start of the fall semester,
the show team was busy organizing
auditions for musicians and moderators as well as coordinating their preparations with the SLS team to ensure as high a musical quality as in the
past years. Many freshies were not afraid to come forward so not only did
many musical contributions include
freshmen, but even one of the moderators had joined the university only
two months earlier!
Another first of this years Piano
to Forte was the performance of the
choir of our Syrian guests that performed the love song Lamma Bada Yatathanna. Never before had someone
external performed on stage at Piano to Forte - but really, these guests
have become an important part of our
community here on campus.
Meanwhile, our Logistics team had
managed to win an event company
as a sponsor providing a large party
tent in front of the cinema, in which
guests could enjoy a drink before the
concert, during intermission and after
the concert. One could even warm up
with the first Glhwein of the year!
The concert nights themselves were
once again a journey around the whole world with music being the common language. A multitude of diverse
ensembles and sophisticated solo pieces, many different instruments and
genres ranging from classical music to
jazz, classic, rock and pop were showcased, such that all music tastes were
met. The two charming moderators
Alexia Paradzai and Radu Homorozan
as well as the introduction videos fil-

med by Vasile Apostu created a professional concert atmosphere. Thanks

to the introduction of each act individually, the internationality and uniqueness of our student body could be
marveled at by the audience.
The first act Dizzy Trane, already
known from last year but now in a
new composition, set the mood of the
evening with their act Skate U by
Snarky Puppy. The slow and smooth
beginning helped the audience to

should substitute any missing motivation. And they are all within reach of the

A
reason to come home
early from a semester abroad is
this wonderful
German tradition that can be
found in every
city throughout
the country. Make
sure to pay a visit
to the
ones at Schlachte (its a
maritime one), in Oldenburg, Hamburg
and Hanover. There are local differences
but you will get Glhwein and Christmas presents at all of them.
VISIT A PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

- with his ensembles act Hey Laura,

not only pulling off a charming act in
the mood of Viennese cafs but also
a legit Austrian German accent when
teasing moderator Radu. The last performance before intermission then
constituted our African choir Mzuka
with Elton Johns The Circle of Life,
known from the Walt Disney Movie
The Lion King with spectacular solos of Lebogang Shilakoe, Thato Mokhothu and Stephanie Castan.
The band The Ginger Ale, then
introduced the second act with their
Remix of Back to Black by Amy
Winehouse and Demons by Imagine
Dragons. From this contemporary
contribution, Kemal Tumysh subsequently showcased his fingers talent
to play his original song Adai Kuy
on his dombra. Our second choir JCapella then took us to the world of
Jazz in the 1930s in New York with
their A-cappella interpretation of
Puttin on the Ritz. J-Capella left
the stage with a high raised bar of musical talent, but the next act was more
than ready to live up to that level.
The Piano Ladies, an homage to the
composers of their song Home, The
Piano Guys, managed to melt away
the ice-cold world of the rich by the
soft tunes of Haley Lubecks cello and
Yingzhao Zhus piano play. The next
act was likewise dedicated to the topic
of home: A choir of our Syrian guests
together with Wassim Ayass, Kareem
Al Nahas, and Rebekka Schliep sung

Lamma Bada Yatathanna dedicating their performance to the country of Syria. Finally, the evening was
perfected with a large ensemble that
had specifically gathered for Piano
to Forte consisting of the SLS Band
& Friends. With Manuel Schipper as
lead singer as well as an incredible
light show, their spectacular version
of November Rain by Guns N Roses
rounded the concert night off perfectly. A big thank you to our two main
organizers Johannes and Veronika
and everyone else who made Piano to
Forte possible and so successful this
year! Everyone is already excited for
what the Jacobs community can put
on stage next year for Piano to Forte
2015!

VISIT THE MUSUEMS

What better time to explore the museums now in winter since its freezing
cold outside anyway? If you have never
been, take the chance and visit the Universum Bremen (science museum with
many interactive experiments), bersee Museum (history of Bremen and
artifacts from abroad, natural history
section, etc.), Focke Museum (history
of Bremen), Weserburg (contemporary
art) and Kunsthalle (modern art).

Treating Bacterial Infections

Antibiotic Resistance

by Hannah Behrens
Biochemistry and Cell Biology 2015,
COUNTRY

here are ten times more bacterial

cells in our bodies than human
cells. We depend on them, without the
right bacteria in and on our body we
die. On the other side there are Cholera, Syphilis, Tetanus, Tuberculosis,
Anthrax, Salmonella, Black Death, etc.
The list is far from being complete.
Bacterial disease used to be a major
threat to humans. From 1347 to 1353
the bacterium Yersinia pestis killed a
third of the European population by
causing the Black Death, just to name
one example.
Today we have antibiotics. Why is it
then that we can still get infected today? Because of antibiotic resistances.
Bacteria reproduce much faster than
us. The time between being born
and having the first child for a bacterium is normally between 1 and 24
hours! This gives bacteria the possibility to adapt very quickly to the drugs
we use. There are four major ways in
which bacteria evade our attempts to
kill them.
[1] Degrade the antibiotic.
This might be the most obvious
way, of simply removing the subs-

tance that is deadly.

[2] Change the target.
Bacteria can change the part of their
body that is targeted by the antibiotic, resulting in the antibiotic not
recognizing the bacteria anymore.
[3] Pump out the antibiotic.
Some bacteria have developed little
pumps to get rid of the antibiotic as
soon as it enters their system.
[4] Dont let the antibiotic in.
As stupid as this sounds, it is possible to simply not eat the dangerous
stuff. If the antibiotic is for example
a very big molecule, the bacterium
might reduce the size of its openings.
These bacterial mechanisms
on one hand
and we, developing new antibiotics, on the
other hand has
turned into an
arms race worse than the cold
war. Unfortunately it is our turn
to move. Many
bacteria
have

developed resistances and in the last

30 years we have developed hardly
any new antibiotics.
Why is it, you might think, that we
havent developed more antibiotics?
There are several reasons. Forone, it
is not that easy to find an antibiotic.
Secondly it is very expensive, because
new drug requires research, drug development and a large number of
trails. And thirdly we simply forgot. In
1969 we thought we were done with
bacterial disease. People did not know
about antibiotic resistances. Why
would anyone develop even more antibiotics, if we already have some? It is
only been in the recently that people
realized we have a real problem here.
The antibiotic resistant bacteria are
now ranked among the top 10 bacterial threats. Action needs to be taken
immediately. Here are three ideas on
what could be done.
IDEA 1: Use less antibiotics, to avoid
development of resistances. The idea
is that if we keep our weapons secret
the bacteria cannot prepare for them.
In this way we can launch a surprise
attack when it is really needed.
IDEA 2: Develop new antibiotics and
improve old ones. One of the research
projects concerned with thisis the
New Drugs for Bad Bugs program in
the Jacobs University MoLife research
center.
IDEA 3: Use other ways. What could
these other ways be? Vaccination (On
this note, it is very important that you
are vaccinated! Lack of vaccination
is a risk to you and people with weaker immune system around you!) and
other fancy things for example phage

06 Outside the Bubble

therapy.
In our scientifically illiterate societies, how can you expect a politician
to know these things? How does your
grandma know that the doctor is making a wise decision when he does not
prescribe antibiotics to her? Are tax
payers happy when all their money is
going into this thing called research?
If you had a choice, would you choose
antibiotics or phage therapy to treat
your bladder infection? Let us be honest. Most people have never heard
the term phage therapy before. Of
course they do not trust it. Our strike
against disease causing bacteria must
come from both sides, from the people through understanding and acceptance of new measures and from scientists and doctors, through research
and reasonable actions. Do Antibiotics
Make Us Obese? If you talk to a farmer,
he can tell you that he feeds low levels
of antibiotics to his chicken, cows and
pigs at all times. This is not to keep
them healthy, but to make them gain
weight faster. Three scientific observations: 1.People with H. pylori infections (the only bacterium known to
cause cancer) that were treated with
antibiotics are more likely to become
obese than people who had H. pylori
infections but were not treated. 2.In
the US the amount of antibiotics given out per state is proportional to the
percentages of overweight and obese
people. 3.When you take the bacteria
that live in the gut of an obese mouse
and transplant them to another mouse,
it will also turn obese. These observations are no proof yet. But they indicate that antibiotics might increase the
risk of obesity. Why is that? Here is a
scientific guess: The antibiotics kill not
only the bad bacteria but also the
good ones in your gut, the so called
gut mircoflora. Disturbing the gut microflora might lead to altered nutrient
uptake and this in turn might lead to
obesity. So should we all stop taking
antibiotics now? No! In the world before antibiotics most of us would have
died as infants. Most people would agree: better be overweight than dead.
So what else can we do? After killing
all bacteria with antibiotics, only
goodbacteria should be taken up
again, e.g. by putting them in capsules
and eating them. Does this work? Not
known yet.

Abolishing the Chief

The EU without Scientific Advise

by Hannah Behrens
Biochemistry and Cell Biology 2015,
COUNTRY

hile everyone was busy watching the landing of Rosetta or

THAT shirt, without much attention
the EU abolished its position of a
chief scientific adviser (CSA). Since
2011 Anna Glover filled this position
in order to provide independent expert advice on any aspect of science,
technology and innovation as requested by the President (Fleming,
2014) as well as give regular general
updates on science. She was the first
to fill this position and might have
been the last.
The position of the CSA was one
of those abolished when the new
President Juncker, who was elected
on Nov 1, decided to close The Bureau of European Policy Advisers.
His spokeswoman Caudet informs us
that Juncker believes in independent scientific advice. He has not yet
decided how to institutionalize this
independent scientific advice (Rabesandratana, 2014).
Anne Glover, the former CSA, most
likely lost her job over genetically
modified organisms (GMOs). The molecular and cell biologist who previously the CSA of Scotland had stated
that GMOs are no more risky than
conventional plant breeding technologies (General Mills). As a result nine groups who oppose GMOs,
including Greenpeace, wrote letters
to Juncker demanding to scrap the
position of the CSA. The groups had
complained that Glovers advice was
not freely available to everyone and
that she presentedbiased and one
sided opinions on the GMO debate.
Now that the CSA is abolished they
see the chance to base scientific advice to the EU on openness and independency.
Many scientists however disagreed
with the decision. The cutting of the
CSA downgrades the value of science
advice at the highest levels of the
commission and especially on the example of climate changewe had seen
that scientific advice is essential.
Further Glover had not given advice
based on her personal opinion, but
was herself advised by research or-

ganizations from Europe and around

the world. Robert Parker, the chief
of the Royal Society of Chemistry
explains, that Glover raised the
profile of science in European decision-making and has been a strong
advocate for science and innovation
as a driver of the European economy (Mehta, 2014).
During her time as European CSA
Glover was sometimes frustrated by
in-house policies and lack of staff,
but was surprised by the appetite
for scientific advice. However she
expressed that the European commission might not have been comfortable with her not supporting the
official opinions with scientific advice. Some argue that the European
commission would have preferred to
see her support their ideas with science and not let science influence
their policies.
Having a CSA is only one possible
model of providing independent scientific information to a government.
It is possible to take advice from a
variety of independent, multidisciplinary sources with a focus on the
public interest (Fleming, 2014) as
Greenpeace and co. requested. However president Juncker has not yet
announced any new position or policy, which would replace the CSA. As
Paul Nurse, president of the Royal
Society in London, puts it: If the
commission has a plausible plan for
ensuring that scientific evidence will
be taken seriously they need to start
sharing it with people soon, otherwise they will encourage those who
portray the commission as out of
touch and not willing to listen to informed advice (Jump, 2014).

What is The Jacobs Way?

The Feminist and Queer Equality Alliance would like to address

the recent choice of performance
at the Casino Party, organized on
November 15th, at TheOtherSide.
Though we appreciate TOSs dedication to providing lively events
for members of the Jacobs community we feel that hosting a stripping performance was insensitive
and inappropriate for a campus
event. We would like to express
that we are in no way objecting
to the stripping profession. However, we feel that, given our many
backgrounds, and hugely varied
personal experiences, this decision was extremely ill considered.
Recent incidents of objectification
and sexism on campus further indicate that this is not the appropriate time or place in which to offer
such a performance.Furthermore
we believe that this performance
should have been clearly advertised so that those who wished
to avoid it could. As a party with
an entrance fee, this misinformation meant people ended up paying for something that they might
have not wished to support or attend. Moreover, we feel that TOS
should have ensured that every
employee who had to work during
the party was aware of the content of the performance, and could
thus make the informed decision
to opt out if they wished. We wish
to question the universitys inaction, as Campus Life was aware of
the performance that was planned.
Jacobs is often (both affectionately and scathingly) referred to
as a bubble;this may hinder our
understanding of realities far removed from our own. Nonetheless, the FQEA believes that demonstrating this discrepancy to
the Jacobs community is highly
relevant to the promotion of the
type of education and understanding that Jacobs University Bremen
prides itself on,
which focuses on
the importance
of diversity, no
matter its form.

Traveling on a Tight Budget?

Tips and Tricks for a Cheap Trip

by Julia Psilitelis

I am asked many times how I

afford travelling so much. Although I am addicted to being
on the move and discovering
new places, I hate spending
money (I dont have). I am sure
you know many of these sites,
and there are plenty more, but
the following list summarizes
the websites I consult regularly
when planning a trip.
TRAINS
W W W.EURAIL.COM
I have not done it (yet) but
heard many good stories. In
case you plan to travel to many
different countries over the
course of a few weeks, a Eurail
pass might be the right thing
to buy.
W W W.LTUR.COM
On lturs website you can get
last minute offers for train tickets. When youre not travelling
during holiday seasons and are
flexible you can find on-way
tickets throughout Germany
for 27 (all connections including high-speed trains). They
even have train connections to
neighboring countries such as
France or the Netherlands for
37 (one-way). The last minute tickets are available for 7
up to1 day before the date of
departure.
BUSES AND SHARED RIDES
W W W.BLABLACAR.COM +
W W W.MITFAHRGELEGENHEIT.DE
Websites where people post offers for shared rides in their
own cars. People driving from
A to B take strangers and split

the cost (the price is fixed beforehand).

W W W.BUSLINIENSUCHE.DE
A good site to compare bus
companies operating in Germany.
FLIGHTS
W W W.RYANAIR.COM
Yes, the service is not terrific and the airplanes not very
comfortable. But, you can get a
round-trip for as little as 40.
Make sure to only take hand
luggage and never forget to
check-in online - and actually
print your boarding pass (or
they will charge you ridiculous
amounts of money).
W W W.GERMANY WINGS.COM
Blind booking If you just want
to get away and dont really
care where you will land, check
out blind booking. A one-way
flight with German Wings costs
you 33.
COMPARING PRICES?
Personally I try to only book on
the official website of the airline; however these still a good
option to compare the prices
from different vendors. Additionally, when you are planning in advance check the price
for the connection you need on
different weekdays I have
found out that the price fluctuates sometimes just with the
weekday you are checking on.
No idea why, but for example
a SAS fight was 70 cheaper
every Friday than on any other
weekday.
