Mactan Team Conducts BCMR Review to Tagbilaran Chapters

Very early morning of August
15, 2012, the team composed of
AMD Nelson Dauz with wife
Babe, Jun and Nery Gula, PSD
Eton Apao with wife Veron and
Fe Enerio converged at Pier 1 for
their trip to Tagbilaran. The

activity held at JJ Restaurant
from 3:30 to 8pm.
During the activity the men
were separated from the ladies
as the talks were given sepa-

rately. After each talk, the participants were given five minutes
to write their wish list on the
topic discussed and the speaker
exchanged places to read the
wish list to their spouses.
The talks given during the
BCMR review are as follows:
Talk 1Serving God Through
Christian Marriage/Role of Christian Husband/Wife - given by Jun
and Nery Gula
Talk 2Communication in
Marriage - given by Nelson and

pouring their hearts out as they
wrote their wish list.
A dinner fellowship ended the
activity where the couples read
to each other the letters they
wrote for each other.
Though constrained with
time, the activity hoped to inspire the participants to be excited again in their service and
with each other as they communicate their feelings while doing
their roles as husbands and

Bishop Palma delivering the homily

August 9, 2012, was a very

special day for Fr. Martin Okafor
-Ilozue (BCLP19). It was his 15th
year as a servant of God.
The thanksgiving Mass was
celebrated by no less than the
Archbishop of Cebu, Bishop Jose
S. Palma at the Mactan Benito
Ebuen Airbase Chapel at 5:30 in
the afternoon. Twelve other
priests, Filipino and Nigerians,
concelebrated the Holy Mass.
Gathered during the Holy
Mass were the friends and benefactors of Fr. Martin. The day
was made more special by the
attendance of Fr. Martins sister,
Anastacia, and the Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines, Buba
Tekunle.
The fellowship that followed
was held at Days Hotel, Man-

Fr. Martin with fellow Nigerians

daue. The well attended fellowship was coordinated by BCBP

Mactan leaders. Nigerian Ambassador Buba was so happy to have
attended Fr. Martins 15th anniversary celebration and to be
seated beside the good Bishop of
Cebu.
During the program, a video
presentation on the life of Fr.
Martin was shown - his younger
years, his seminary days, his
work as a missionary in Mindanao, and his latest mission
activities here in Cebu.
The singing, the dancing and
the lively and happy atmosphere
during the fellowship showed
how Fr. Martin is loved by his
own people as well as the Filipinos whose lives he has touched.

Finding God in Everyday Situation

Jourdan Polotan - BCBP Cebu North

Aspects of the Call

God initiates the encounter

God deals with us in our own unique way

God leaves us free to respond in free will to His initiative

Three myths about discovering God or the call to holiness or lies perpetuated by the devil
1. Holiness is only for the religious and priests
2. The world where lay people is called to be involved is corrupting and hostile
to any genuine spirituality and holiness.
Jourdan Polotan

3. Guidance is needed to grow in faith and love but it is only available to religious people and priests.
Consciousness Examen
We will know Jesus when we encounter Him in our daily life thru a process
called examination of conscience.
Steps in the Consciousness Examen
1. Quiet down and be aware of Gods presence. You can repeat the words:
BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD
2. Invite God to walk with you as you review the days past from your last
prayer time up to the present.
3. Note and meditate the times God touched you and loved you directly or
through others. God touches you through consoling and through the fruits
of the Holy Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5.
4. Note and meditate how you responded to Gods love.
5. Thank God for accompanying you.
6. Continue with your normal prayer patterns.
7. Journalize your experience.
8. Be consistent and do this daily.

God doesnt always tell us how Hes working out His plan, but in His time and ways He clearly let us
know Hes working out the best for you because He loves us.

PORTA FIDEI
Of the Supreme Pontiff (BENEDICT XVI)

The renewal of the

Church is also achieved
through the witness offered
by the lives of believers

it is the love of Christ that

fills our hearts and impels
us to evangelize.

The renewal of the Church is also achieved through the witness offered
by the lives of believers: by their very existence in the world, Christians are
called to radiate the word of truth that the Lord Jesus has left us. The council
itself, in the Dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium, said this: While Christ,
holy, innocent and undefiled (Heb 7:26) knew nothing of sin (cf. 2 Cor. 5:21),
but came only to expiate the sins of the people (cf. Heb 2:L17) the Church
clasping sinners to its bosom, at once holy and always in need of purification,
follows constantly the path of penance and renewal. The Church, like a
stranger in a foreign land, presses forward amid the persecutions of the world
and the consolations of God, announcing the cross and death of the Lord until
he comes (cf. 1 Cor. 11:26). But by the power of the risen Lord it is given
strength to overcome, in patience and in love, its sorrow and its difficulties,
both those that are from within and those that are from without, so that it may
reveal in the world, faithfully, although with shawls, the mystery of its Lord
until, in the end, it shall be manifested in full light.
The Year of Faith, from this perspective, is a summons to an authentic
and renewed conversion to the Lord, the one Savior on the world. In the mystery of his death and resurrection, God has revealed in its fullness the Love that
saves and calls us to conversion of life through the forgiveness of sins (cf. Acts.
5:31). For Saint Paul, this Love ushers us into a new life: We were buried
with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by
the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life (Rom. 6:4).
Through faith, this new life shapes the whole of human existence according to
the radical new reality of the resurrection. To the extent that he freely cooperated, mans thoughts and affections. Mentality and conduct are slowly purified
and transformed, on a journey that is never completely finished in this life.
Faith working through love (Gal 5:6) becomes a new criterion of understanding and action that changes the whole of mans life (cf. Rom 12:2; Col. 3:9-10);
Eph 4:20-29; 2 Cor.5:17).
Caritas Christi urget nos (2 Cor. 5:14): it is the love of Christ that fills
our hearts and impels us to evangelize. Today as in the past, he sends us
through the highways of the world to proclaim his Gospel to all the peoples of
the earth (cf. Mt. 28:19). Through his love, Jesus Christ attracts to himself the
people of every generation: in every age he convokes the Church, entrusting
her with the proclamation of the Gospel by a mandate that is every new. Today
too, there is a need for stronger ecclesial commitment to new evangelization in
order to rediscover the joy of believing and the enthusiasm for communicating
the faith. In rediscovering his love day by day, the missionary commitment of
believers attains force and vigor that can never fade away. Faith grows when it
is lived as an experience of love received and when it is communicated as an
experience of grace and joy. It makes us fruitful, because it expands our hearts
in hope and enables us to bear life-giving witness: indeed, it opens the hearts

respond the Lords invitation to
adhere to this world and become
his disciples. Believers, to Saint
Augustine tell us, strengthen
themselves by believing.
The saintly Bishop of Hippo
had good reason to express
himself in this way. As we know,
his life was a continual search for
the beauty of the faith until such
time as his heart would find rest
in God. His extensive writing, in

which he explains the importance of believing and the truth

of the faith, continue even now
to form a heritage of incomparable riches, and they still help
many people in search of God to
find the right path towards the
door to faith.

Unit Casinillo Takes Time-Off to Fellowship

August was an activities-filled
month for BCBP Mactan. Yet,
Unit Casinillo found time to
fellowship on the afternoon of
August 26 at Rendesvouz Beach
Resort, Marigondon, Lapulapu
City.
Just like any fellowship where
food and drinks were BYOP, the
table provided could hardly contain the abundance of provision
every member brought. The
bakasi of Ate Jessica Tahanlangit
was a hit, as well as Ate Joys
chocolate cake and binignit.
All the action groups were
very well represented during the

activity. The presence of Kuya

Frank and Ate Lydia Robles and
Kuya Jun and Ate Naidz Calalang
added smiles to the members
faces. What with the Ate Naidz
taking pictures here and there.
Ates Joy Lozano, Mina Loterte
and Del Comar, the game masters, facilitated the games for the
young ones and the once young.
Kuya Jun Gula was the Pinoy
Henyo champion while the group
of Ate Ate Elsie Legara won the
cheer dance contest.
The men on the other hand
enjoyed their beer and red wine
while jamming to the music ac-

companiment of Kuya Frank

Robles and Kuya Felix Rule making the The Last Leaf the
theme song on that beautiful
afternoon.
The group closed the activity
with a prayer at around seven in
the evening. Everyone went
home bringing the memories of a
time well spentbonding at its
best.

Singing with all their hearts

with all their strength!

Guitar and beer perfect match!

Chapter Heads Message

Time Flies
As if it was just yesterday common comments these days, isnt it?
Does time really flies that fast? Is time
today different from yesterday? Is
earths rotation these days faster than
few years back? Is 24 hrs these days
shorter than days back? Are we shortCH Guy and Eden Ceniza changed of our time these days?
Yes time may change - as being
perceived by the marketing strategists
but not in real sense. Age of consumerism coupled by the emerging technology wherein things are just in our
finger tips (making the world smaller)
gives that sense.
As we enter the BER months we
cannot help but be dissuaded by the
shops gimmicks for Christmas. Spirit
of Christmas will soon be just in the
corners. Yuletide songs fill the air and
one day we would be part of the
crowd rushing in the malls unplanned.

We cannot help but think on what

preparation we would like to have for
the company, family, friends and associates. We would as much as possible
make a good preparation year after year.
But had we had a very meaningful celebration?
It would be much better if we can go
out of the traditions and have peace with
the person/s whom we had misgivings.
To be with persons who had lost the
touch of Christmas. To be with persons
whos always running after their day to
day subsistence; that everyday is just the
same.
Let us therefore change our attitude
of what we can get this Christmas but
rather what we can give to the least of
our brethrens this special season of giving. May we have a more meaningful
celebration.

September to Remember

Nery Gula

She deserves that I

live my life like
herhumble and
obedient to the
Father.

September is celebration month for

our family. It started last September 2
when our youngest Teresa Marie
turned 16.
Jun will be 52 on the 19th while our
second girl will celebrate her 23rd
birthday on the 26th. To cap the
month long celebration will be our
27th wedding anniversary on the 28th.
To cut on cost, we planned to do
one big celebration for all these big
events. But we can never omit little
gift giving that brings joy to the celebrants.

There is also one big celebration this

month that we cannot do without. On
September 8 is Mama Marys birthday.
This early I already bought flowers for
her. For a great intercessor and mother,
I cannot postpone celebrating her birthday. She deserves more that the flowers
I offered her. She deserves that I live my
life like herhumble and obedient to the
Father.

We cannot change yesterday, its gone, that is clear. Nor begin tomorrow until its here. So all that
is left is to make today as fruitful and good as it can be
