CAS Frequently Asked Q&As

The following are common questions that are asked about CAS. If you still have questions after

Q: If I am doing certificate only, do I have to do CAS?
A: No! CAS is only for IB FULL DIPLOMA students. However, colleges want to see students
actively involved in the community and in extracurricular activities, so we encourage students to
be involved in various activities outside of academia. BUT you do NOT need to do CAS! NO
FULL DIPLOMA = NO CAS.
Q: Do the group project members have to be from IS? From the same grade? Doing IB
Diploma?
A: No, your group project members do not have to be from IS, or from the same grade or doing
IB Diploma. However, you have to ensure that your group members are willing to do all the
work that you will be putting into the project, which includes planning, meeting and carrying out
the actual project. As a group, all of you will have to attend a few meetings with the CAS
Coordinator throughout the year.
Q: Can I count my work from MYP? Can the work I do at my job count?
A: Unfortunately, you can NOT count any work that you did for money (ex.paid job) or for
school credit. You may be able to count hours from internships, however its case by case, so
please check with Ms. Ng before assuming the hours you accure from internships can be counted
towards CAS.
Q: How do I record my hours?
A: Go to CAS website: www.sandi.net/sdhsis --> Staff --> Jacqueline Ng CAS , you can
download the form CAS Summary Log Sheet for your class. You need to fill that out
periodically, totalling all the hours you have done so far. You will also need to state the name
and contact information for each activity supervisor.
Q: Can I count the hours I accumulated from previous years i.e. before September of 11th grade?
A: No. Officially, the hours for CAS have to be accumulated over a span of 18 months starting
from September of your 11th grade.
Q: How many of the three domains of CAS do my activities need to satisfy.
A: All three domains of CAS have to be satisfied significantly through your activities and
project.
Q: Do ASB activities, Key Club activities count towards CAS?
A: Yes, but only if you do not get money or academic credit for you. Also remember at the end
of the 18 months you will have to have satisfied all 8 learning outcomes through your activities
and projects. So please evaluate the activities you are currently participating in, to ensure you
meet the requirements.
Q: Can I count the activities that I do with my church or at church for CAS?
A: Yes, but only if the activities or projects can not be interpreted as proselytizing. The CAS
Booklet says, work done by a religious group in the wider community, provided that the
objectives are clearly secular, may qualify as CAS.
