SnapView Software

SnapView Software
SnapView Copy software consists of

SnapView Driver

SnapView driver
SnapView user interface (UI)
SnapView command line interface (CLI)
admsnap utility
CLARiiON VSS provider

For a CX300, CX400, CX500, CX600, or CX700 storage system to use

the SnapView software, the SnapView driver must be enabled on the
storage system. The driver is enabled when the SnapView Enabler,
which is part of the SnapView kit, is installed on the storage system.
If you ordered SnapView with a new CX300, CX400, CX500, CX600,
or CX700 storage system, the SnapView Enabler can be installed
during storage-system initialization.
Once the driver is enabled, it stays enabled even if you upgrade the FLARE
Operating Environment software on the storage system.

SnapView UI

The SnapView UI requires the Management UI, which is part of

Navisphere Manager. For you to use these UIs, they must be
enabled on the storage system at which you will point your browser.
Prior to shipment, both UIs are enabled on CX300, CX500, and CX700
storage systems, but they are not enabled on CX400 and CX600
storage systems. Both UIs are enabled on a CX400 or CX600 storage
system when the Manager Enabler, which is part of the Manager kit,
is installed on the storage system. If you ordered Manager with a new
CX400 or CX600 storage system, the Manager UI can be installed
during storage-system initialization.
Once the UIs are enabled, they stay enabled even if you upgrade the
FLARE Operating Environment software on the storage system.

SnapView CLI

SnapView CLI is part of the Navisphere CLI, which ships with the
Navisphere Host Agent kits.

IMPORTANT - When you install new software on a storage system,
do not remove or reboot an SP while installation is in progress. Doing
so may leave the storage system in a transient state where it cannot be
restarted. Wait for the entire upgrade process to complete and
automatically reboot the SPs.
Important: Snapshot sessions running in persistence mode will continue
running during a non-disruptive upgrade (NDU).

Installation Prerequisites

Two or more servers, each attached to each storage system that

will run SnapView.

EMC Navisphere Manager enabled on the SPs in at least one

storage system in each Navisphere domain. (For information on
Navisphere domains, see the EMC Navisphere Security
Administrators Guide on the documentation CD.)
Prior to shipment, Manager is enabled on CX300, CX500, and CX700
storage systems, but is not enabled on CX200, CX400, and CX600 storage
systems. Manager is enabled on CX200, CX400, and CX600 systems when
the Manager Enabler is installed. The Manager Enabler can be installed
on CX400 and CX600 storage systems at the same time as the SnapView
Enabler. Once Manager is enabled, it stays enabled, even if you upgrade
the FLARE Operating Environment on the storage system

Access Logix software enabled on the storage systems that run

SnapView.
Prior to shipment, Access Logix is enabled on CX500 and CX700 storage
systems, but is not enabled, on CX400 and CX600 storage systems. Access
Logix is enabled on CX400 and CX600 storage systems when the Access

Admsnap Installation

To Install admsnap on an AIX RS/6000 SP Server

Before you can install admsnap, you need to determine whether a
previous version of the software is already installed on the server
and, if so, remove it.
To Discover and Remove a Previous admsnap Version
1. On the AIX server, log in as superuser (root).
2. Open an Xterm window and enter the following command to list
currently installed admsnap software:
lslpp -L admsnap*
3. Examine the list to determine if any previous revision of admsnap
is present. If a previous revision of the software is present,
remove it as described next.
4. Uninstall existing admsnap software on specified nodes.
dsh installp -u admsnap

CAUTION
When performing the next procedure you must be in the control
workstation window, and not in a node or other window.

Preparing to Install admsnap

If all nodes on the SP partition will not have admsnap software
installed, then you must create a Working Collective environment
variable specific to the nodes that will have the software installed.
The format of the Working Collective file is the reliable hostname of
the SP nodes on which to install the software, one name per line in
the file.
To Create the Working Collective Environment Variable

1. Save the current Working Collective environment variable

information so that when the installation is complete, you can
restore the variable. Enter
echo $WCOLL
/etc/wcoll
wcoll is in the /etc directory. WCOLL is only valid per partition.

10

EMC SnapView and admsnap Installation Guide

Admsnap Installation

2. Using a text editor, create a file for the Working Collective. Use
the pathname /tmp/EMChosts. In the file, insert the hostnames of
the nodes in the SP partition that will have admsnap installed.
Note the following example:
cws_sp_node1
cws_sp_node3
cws_sp_node5
cws_sp_node9
3. Export the Working Collective (WCOLL) environment variable
using the following command:
export WCOLL=/tmp/EMChosts
4. To verify that the correct node has been exported to the OS, use
the following command:
dsh date
The correct node should respond.
To Install admsnap Software on Specified Nodes
Follow these steps to install admsnap software using the installp
command. This procedure installs the software on specified SP nodes
all at once from the control workstation.
Using SMIT requires you to install admsnap on each SP node individually,
and is not recommended for installation.

1. On the control workstation, change directories as follows:

cd /spdata/sys1/install/pssplpp/PSSP-3.1.1
2. Create the subdirectory admsnap, using the following command:
mkdir admsnap
3. Enter the following command at the AIX shell prompt:
crfs -v cdrfs -p ro -d cd0 -m /cd_tmp
4. Insert the admsnap CD-ROM in the control workstations
CD-ROM drive.

EMC SnapView and admsnap Installation Guide

11

Admsnap Installation

5. Type the following commands:

mount /cd_tmp
cd /cd_tmp/aix
cp * /spdata/sys1/install/pssplpp/PSSP-3.1.1/admsnap
inutoc /spdata/sys1/install/pssplpp/PSSP-3.1.1/admsnap
6. Using NFS, mount the image directory from specified SP nodes
using the following command form:
dsh mount cwsname:/spdata/sys1/install/pssplpp/PSSP-3.1.1 /mnt

where cwsname is the actual cws name (for example, CWS104684).

7. Run the installp command on specified nodes from the EMC
Navisphere directory by entering
dsh installp agXd /mnt/admsnap all
8. Restore the original Working Collective environment variable
using the following command form:
export WCOLL=original_wcoll
where original_wcoll is the actual name of the working collective
environment variable (for example, /etc/wcoll).
The software is installed in the directory /usr/admsnap.
