and the industry continued to create jobs
and reach new milestones.
Here are just some of the highlights
from 2014:

analytics from Bentek Energy, April
was the most productive month
ever for U.S. natural gas production.
Natural gas output for the lower 48
states averaged 67.3 billion cubic

natural gas prices plummeted and that
customer drastically reduced operations,
forcing Green Energy to rethink its
business plan.
The company refocused on the Eagle
Ford play by opening additional yards and
adding trucks. Green Energy now serves
several customers and finds its fleet of tanks
and trucks in daily use.
Green Energy CEO Joe Monroe says
the company is poised for a strong year and
may even look at further expansion.

(LNG) challenged
Green Energy Oilfield Services. The
company
needed
stations to refuel its fleet of 84 trucks, and
its maintenance team had to learn how to
service the LNG engines.
Green Energy, based in Fairfield, Texas, adopted LNG vehicles as a competitive
advantage in serving large energy producers that promote LNG as a vehicle fuel. In
practice, the company had to prove the
LNG technology as reliable while competing in a service marketplace largely driven
by low cost.

MOVING WATER
Green Energy provides water and
other oilfield fluid transportation and also
rents out frac, acid and mud tanks along
with mud pumps. Its fleet numbers more
than 600 total units.
Our bread and butter is moving
production water, says Joe Monroe, CEO
and president. We haul the freshwater to
a location to be used for fracking. We then
take the contaminated water from the well
site to an offsite disposal location.
In addition to its headquarters, Green
Energy has facilities in Marquez, Asherton,
Gonzales and Three Rivers, Texas, and
employs 230 people.
The biggest area for us now is down
in the Eagle Ford where basically every

barrel of oil also produces a barrel of

water, Monroe says.
According to a fact sheet from
Chesapeake Energy Corp., a single Eagle
Ford well may use as much as 6 million
gallons (125,000 barrels) of water per year
between the use of drilling fluid (mud) and
water used in fracking operations.
ROUGH START
Lone Star Investment Advisors, a private equity group based in Dallas, started
Green Energy in late 2011. The original
plan was to operate specifically in the
Freestone Trend area south of Dallas and
exclusively serve one oil and gas producer
with a three-year commitment.
The company originally purchased 60
brand-new LNG trucks, 54 vacuum trailers and 425 frac tanks. However, just as the
equipment began to arrive in mid-2012, the
scene in the Freestone a primarily drygas play took a dramatic turn.
Natural gas became more abundant,
the price plummeted and the focus began
to shift to crude oil. Soon, Green Energys
exclusive customer pulled most of its operations out of the Freestone, dropping from
20-plus rigs in the area to two.
The Freestone Trend continued to
decline, business was drying up, and the
base customer could not even utilize half
of the equipment we had purchased,
Monroe says. We immediately refocused
the company.
Knowing it had to take on more customers, Green Energy opened three yards
in the Eagle Ford play and moved equipment to them.
Were still in the final stages of our
initial startup with the hiccups in the
beginning and our need to geographically
diversify and customer diversify, Monroe
says. Were just now getting to 100 percent
utilization and to the top level of our cash
flow capabilities with our existing assets.

120-gallon fuel tanks, ordered through Rush Enterprises. Each truck came
with a 15-liter Cummins engine converted from diesel to natural gas by Westport Power. Fifty-four of the trucks haul vacuum trailers (Dragon) and the
other six carry winches for moving tanks.
In 2013 and 2014 Monroe bought 24 more trucks at a steep discount.
These, with trailers from Galyean, have dual LNG fuel tanks that double
their range.
An all-LNG fleet brought up one issue early on fueling. There werent
any fueling stations close enough to be useful, so Green Energy installed
its own.
Right now were single-sourcing the LNG from a plant Clean Energy
runs in Willis, Texas, Monroe says. We pick up the LNG there every day,
sometimes a couple of times a day, and deliver it to our five yards so our
trucks can come and go at shift time and refuel.
Maintenance was another challenge. The companys team had to
learn the new technology and work out the bugs with Peterbilt, Cummins
and Westport.

Green Energy Oilfield trucks have to return to base each time

they need to be refueled.

The fuel delivery system posed issues of its own:

The tanks couldnt keep the fuel cold, and when it
heated up it evaporated and vented out the top. Westport resolved the issue by modifying or replacing all
the fuel tanks with an improved vacuum seal design.
To date that has eliminated the loss of vacuum
on the tanks and therefore the tanks do not heat up
unusually fast, Monroe says.
Green Energy had to feel its way as the first company to use such a large all-LNG fleet to provide oilfield services.
I think it helped a little bit in that our fleet wasnt
100 percent utilized early on, so we were not exposed
as much as we would be today, Monroe says. When
a truck goes down today we dont make revenue with
that truck. As we were going through those growing
pains early on, we had a little bit of extra equipment
to pick up the slack.

DIESEL PERFORMANCE.
HYBRID TECHNOLOGY.

Were kind of all in this game and weve

dedicated our knowledge base and
our assets to this. Weve proven that the
technology works. Were really walking the
talk and putting our brains and money
behind natural gas as transportation fuel.
Joe Monroe
Since the original bugs have been worked out,
Green Energy has dealt only with regular preventive
maintenance. That made the purchase of the second
batch of trucks more attractive because they were
built with the same engine.
All of our mechanics can work on all of the
trucks with no issues, Monroe says.
PROVEN TECHNOLOGY
When deciding on an LNG fleet, Green Energys
founders hoped it would help attract customers
particularly the large energy companies that tout natural gas as a transportation fuel. However, that hasnt
happened quite as planned.
The reality is that when it comes down to dollars
and cents, theyre really looking for the lowest-price
service provider, Monroe says. I think LNG was
even a bit of a detriment because of the uncertainty
and unproven track record of this type of equipment
operating in the harsh environment of the oilfields.
Monroe says Green Energy has proven the equipments capability, But the people still arent walking
the talk when they say everybody should be using natural gas as a transportation fuel wherever possible.

SAFETY FOR ALL

Joe Monroe takes pride in Green Energy Oilfield Services safety record
on the road. In a trucking company, he says, safety must be a top priority
for all employees.
Weve driven over 9 million miles over the last two years and have
zero Department of Transportation at-fault incidents, Monroe says. Each
year of our operation our insurance rates have gone down and we have
had no workers compensation issues.
Most drivers have 10-plus years of experience and most had worked
in the oilfields even before they joined the company. Green Energy pays
top dollar for experienced drivers and shies away from those starting
from scratch.
We want experienced drivers who know what theyre doing,
who are not going to have silly accidents, who know the value of the
equipment, know what our customers expect and pay attention to details,
Monroe says.
Newly hired drivers spend the first few days in training.
The first time they sit in a truck is a ride-along with one of our drivers
to learn the way we do business, Monroe says. Then they must pass a
driving test with a supervisor before theyre allowed to drive by themselves.
Employees also receive H2S monitors, because of the work they do
around wells.
Monroe says, Being safe can save you money, but most important, its
about no one getting hurt at any of our locations or anybody elses.

Services trucks at the yard in Fairfield, Texas.
BELOW: Green Energy Oilfield Services has over 400 frac tanks (Dragon) that can be rented
out to customers. (Photo courtesy of Green Energy Oilfield Services)

Green Energy fuels its vehicles for $2 a gallon less than the cost of diesel.
So neglecting the slightly higher capital cost of these trucks, we should always
be that lowest-cost provider, Monroe says. But we dont want to give all of
our margin away to the customer we still need to make a profit ourselves.
KEEPING TRACK OF IT ALL
With a fleet of 84 LNG-fueled vehicles, over 30 service pickup trucks and
over 500 tanks, keeping track of the equipment is important. For that, Green
Energy uses GPS technology from Geoforce.
Weve got over 600 pieces of equipment with trucks and vacuum trailers
16

as well as frac tanks and every one of them has a GPS tracking device, says
John Renger, vice president of operations and commercial development. With
the trucks we have real-time tracking that shows right down to the second
where its located and how fast its going.
The frac tanks get pinged twice a day so the company knows where they

Bakken Extra

TRIBAL DRILLING
North Dakota Native American tribe takes an
active role in oil and gas production
By Cory Dellenbach

ne Native American tribe is taking

advantage of its location by drilling
the first tribal-owned oil wells in
the Bakken Shale play.
The wells are located near the small
reservation town of Mandaree, N.D., and
owned by the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara
Nation commonly called the Three
Affiliated Tribes.

into developing the company, but officials

will work with the tribes elected body to
share earnings.
Growth opportunities for Missouri
River Resources within the reservation are
limited because the tribe leased out most of
the oil rights to private companies when the
tribe was struggling to get out of debt at the
start of the oil boom.

Were spending $10 million a well, so were very frugal and want to make sure we
do this right. We want to be quick here, but were not going to hurry. We want
to make sure we do this right so we have the ability to show the people,
the industry, that the Three Affiliated Tribes can operate their own wells.
Dave Williams

It presents a huge opportunity for the

tribe to get involved, says Ken Hall, board
chairman of the tribal energy company
Missouri River Resources.
Currently there are 1,300-plus wells
on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation
that produce a third of North Dakotas daily
output, but the tribe only receives a fraction
of money generated through royalties and a
tax-sharing agreement with the state.
The four tribal-owned wells are
important because the tribe will take in 82
percent of the money generated. Missouri
River Resources hopes to begin drilling on
the 320 acres in February.
Thats how you get the lions share
of the pie, and thats what were doing,
Hall says.
USING A NATIONAL MODEL
Missouri River Resources says money
earned by the company currently goes back
18

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - JANUARY 2015

If everythings leased out, I dont

know how I can find more land unless I go
off the reservation, says Dave Williams,
CEO of Missouri River Resources.
A tribe in Colorado was forced to go
off reservation for drilling opportunities
two decades ago and now the Southern
Ute Tribes energy company, Red Willow
Production Company, is considered
the national model for tribal resource
development.
In 1992, the Southern Ute Tribe,
located in Ignacio, Colo., founded Red
Willow to control and operate the tribes
energy resources. Red Willow went from
operating a few wells on tribal lands to
having an interest in over 1,800 wells in
major basins across the U.S. and the Gulf
of Mexico.
Red Willow has net production
in excess of 70 billion cubic feet of gas
equivalent per year.

I started looking for experts and I

actually went down to Colorado to visit
the Red Willow Production Company and
asked for their business plan of how they
created their company and they gave me it,
Williams says.
FINDING THE RIGHT PEOPLE
Williams has 20 years of experience
in the oil industry working for Gulf Oil and
Chevron and knew the company needed
good petroleum engineers and geologists.
First you need resources, but you
also need expertise, Williams says. Thats
been my primary objective, to hire as many
experts as I can find.
Missouri River Resources was officially
formed in 2011. The company now has
four petroleum engineers three in the
midstream sector and one in the exploration
and production sector.
Were spending $10 million a well, so
were very frugal and want to make sure we
do this right, Williams says. We want to
be quick here, but were not going to hurry.
We want to make sure we do this right so
we have the ability to show the people, the
industry, that the Three Affiliated Tribes can
operate their own wells.
LOOKING AHEAD
Beyond the immediate drilling plans,
Hall and Williams say they hope to start
a workforce development program on the
reservation to attract Native Americans from
across the country who want to work in oil
and gas.
We just want people to have the ability
or option to make a great living, Williams
says. GOMC

Building the Business

THE BEST BOSS

The 10 features employees are looking for in a boss
By DeEtta Jones

o you ever feel overwhelmed as

a manager? Being overburdened
by the responsibility of having
to figure out what others want and need
of you is a familiar feeling shared among
leaders. Fortunately, there is a best
practice for obtaining just the kind of
information needed to increase your
leadership effectiveness ask them what
they want.
The following 10 traits have emerged
when front line staff, supervisors and
middle managers have been asked to
describe the traits they look for in a boss.
As you read through their wish list think
about the kind of boss you are, the kind
you want to be and what you look for in a
good boss.
Employees want bosses who are:

and identification of learning that can be

applied to future endeavors.

1. Innovative
Good bosses have good ideas but their
role in innovation is more as facilitator than
consummate mastermind. They are not
threatened by the talent of their employees
and cultivate a working environment that
allows each persons creativity to come
forward. They facilitate innovation.

Good bosses have a fire in their belly about something particularly

the vision and mission of the organization, the people they work
with and whom their products and services are meant to touch.

2. Coaches
Good bosses provide important
education and guidance that help employees
see how their work is contributing to the
larger goals of the organization. They
help employees build confidence by
giving stretch assignments that require
demonstration of new skills and right-sized
risk, then feedback that allows needed
course corrections to be made early enough
to avoid a major failure. When employees
do fail, good bosses encourage reflection

6. Trustworthy
Good bosses are genuine, have
integrity and behave in a manner consistent
with their word and values. Employees
trust bosses they know to be intelligent,
capable and who have a demonstrated
track record of acting in their best interest.
They give and receive feedback, affirmative
and constructive.

3. Caring
Good bosses listen to their employees
and show an interest in their opinion.
They provide opportunities to talk openly,
showing interest in their employees
opinion. They encourage personal and
professional growth, sometimes by giving
access to resources and sometimes by
removing barriers.
4. Strategic
Good bosses can make hard choices
and have the finesse needed to get
people behind even sometimes unpopular
decisions. They are able to secure resources

for important initiatives worth pursuing.

They use analytical frameworks for guiding
change, promoting transparent processes
and communication. Strategic bosses are
decisive. Once a decision has been made,
they stick with it and avoid changing
directions quickly or sending mixed
messages.
5. Visionary
Good bosses are also visionary
managers, able to clearly see and build a
commitment toward a compelling future
state. They articulate a sense of direction,
map out the path and shepherd the process.

7. Accessible and adaptable

Good bosses are able to balance how
they give support and direction with the
freedom employees need to do their work,
acknowledging the level of experience
and expertise over their domain. They
understand that each employee comes to
the workplace with unique experiences,
needs and cultural lenses that will require
individualized attention and support, and
can adapt their own style to ensure effective
communication and levels of productivity.
8. Passionate
Good bosses have a fire in their
belly about something particularly the

vision and mission of the organization,

the people they work with and whom
their products and services are meant to
touch. They are the first to roll up their
sleeves to contribute, and model the level
of motivation and quality required for
achievement of organizational goals.
9. Champions
People want to know that the person
they report to is on their side, even when
mistakes are made. Champions look for
opportunities to catch their employees
doing a good job, and go out of their way
to point it out. They dont take the credit

for their employees work, and they dont throw an employee under the bus
ever. They influence up by being a conduit between their employees
and higher level decision-makers, often helping their employees develop the
language and influence strategies needed to take an idea to the top of the
organization.
10. Fun
Good bosses are willing to laugh and value a work environment that
encourages meaningful relationships between colleagues. They inspire us by
making the connection from our head to our heart about the importance of
our work and our value to the company.
Heres the leadership next step: Reflect on the list and identify qualities
you are modeling. Think about where there is room for growth in your
leadership practice growth that will lead to increased levels of motivation
and engagement.

A POSITIVE VOICE
Canada Action facilitating a balanced discussion about the oil and gas industry
By Cory Dellenbach

he oilsands of Canada have been

given a bad rap, but a new group in
Canada is trying to show that the
resource is a good thing for the country.
Cody Battershill, a resident of Calgary,
Alberta, launched Canada Action a year
ago as a way to start conversation on
the oilsands.
In 2010 I was in Vancouver and saw
a cosmetics company using a marketing
campaign against the oilsands and it kind
of bugged me, Battershill says. I wasnt
really sure why a cosmetics company
thought it was OK to market against a
resource that is a big job provider and
economic driver of our country.
Battershill says he didnt know much
about the resource at that time, so he
researched it and found there were a lot
of fears circulating about the oilsands and
not a lot of facts. He took to the Internet to
begin conversations on the topic.
After four years those conversations
evolved into Canada Action. The group
earned its nonprofit status in October
and now has over 10,000 supporters, over
150 volunteers and a core team of people
managing it, including Battershill.
People Ive talked to in the area

are tired of seeing celebrities come and

basically smear the community, Battershill
says. Its a great place to live, its a vibrant
city and people are tired of the rhetoric.
They want a balanced conversation and a
more inclusive conversation.
Celebrities like Neil Young, Leonardo
DiCaprio and Robert Redford have made

There are more people speaking out against our resources that
arent using the facts; theyre using a lot of fear and a lot of emotion.
Cody Battershill

their way to Alberta to denounce the oil

and gas industry. Battershill says that while
the oil and gas industry has more money
than the environmental activists, the
activists appear to be winning the PR war.
There are more people speaking out
against our resources that arent using the
facts; theyre using a lot of fear and a lot of
emotion, Battershill says. The vast silent
majority of Canadians that do support
informed conversations and balanced
discussions about these issues arent really
speaking up.

The group is also focused on informing

the public about liquid natural gas in
British Columbia, the Northern Ontario
Ring of Fire and offshore development on
the East Coast.
The world oil demand is continuing
to increase and I think Canada is catching
up to where we should be, Battershill

says. Were only fifth in the world for oil

production, but we have the third largest
reserve and were producing something
like 4 percent of the worlds oil. Four
percent is sizable, but we still have a lot of
opportunities to grow.
Battershill hopes to continue to grow
Canada Action with additional supporters
and volunteers. Canada Action has hosted
events in Calgary as well as Fort McMurray
and Vancouver to inform residents of what
the group is doing.
Its a lot of fun, but its a little overwhelming because there are a lot of people
who want to bring you down, Battershill
says. The message is about supporting an
informed, balanced conversation. We all
care about the environment, we all care
deeply and are making sure we are producing our resources responsibly.

HUSKYS HIT THE TRAIL

Brawny tracked cargo carriers traverse some of the roughest terrain
imaginable in northern Alberta without marring the landscape
By Ken Wysocky

n old saying notes that when the going gets tough, the tough get
going. In the world of Canadian oil and gas production, when the
going gets tough, RyTy Developments Ltd. in Alberta also gets going,
courtesy of its fleet of off-road tracked cargo carriers, made by Foremost
Industries.
Companies like RyTy, which specializes in the off-road transport of
everything from drilling-rig sections to large pipes to heavy equipment like
cranes and bulldozers, are more likely to use a GPS unit than a mainline,
paved highway to reach the remote drilling pads and pipelines they service.
But with a fleet of equipment that includes two Nodwell FN600s, two
Nodwell TF900s and two rebuilt 1976 Husky 8 tracked carriers, there are
few places that crews from the Grande Prairie-based company cant reach.
We have the biggest fleet of off-road equipment of this size for oilfield
use in Alberta, says Shaun Lawrence, general manager of RyTy. We bought
our Huskys used and totally rebuilt them steering, tracks, motors all
that stuff. We can easily dump anywhere from $300,000 to $500,000 into
rebuilding machines like this.
The tracks alone cost $45,000 apiece, so you can spend $200,000 in a
big hurry just doing tracks, he adds. But its still cheaper than buying a new
one, which costs about $1.4 million, and rebuilt vehicles work just as well as
the new ones.

MACHINES: Nodwell and Husky tracked cargo carriers from
Foremost Industries LP
FUNCTION: Transporting heavy equipment, drilling-rig sections and large
pipe sections to remote drilling and pipeline sites
FEATURES: 80,000-pound payload capacity; 460 hp, six-cylinder diesel
engines; 65-ton hydraulic winch; Allison automatic transmission
COST:

About $1.4 million

With their 80,000-pound payload capacities, the Nodwells are real

workhorses. Four wide, flexible tracks (each one 60 inches wide and 20 feet
long) substantially reduce ground-bearing pressure down to 4.7 psi at 32.4
kPa (kilopascal, a unit of pressure measurement) while carrying a 40-ton
load. It may trample down some grass, but it doesnt leave any footprint no
ruts, nothing, Lawrence says. And it saves clients money if they dont have
to go and reclaim ruts.
The wide tracks enable the Nodwells to transport heavy payloads across
some of the softest ground conditions around, including sand, mud, snow,
swamp and muskeg.
They can go a lot of places where even a quad [all-terrain vehicle]
cant go, Lawrence notes. The tracks are heavier than tires, but theyre big

What the study shows is what weve

The oil and gas industry has been
on an accelerated growth path since the
beginning of the Marcellus and Utica shale
development in 2006, says Robert Bruno,
University of Illinois labor expert and one
of the studys authors.
Commissioned by the Oil and
Natural Gas Industry Labor-Management
Committee, the study looks at just one
part of the economy construction

A preliminary examination
of employment data in states
related to the Marcellus Shale
play reveals that natural gas
exploration has been a strong
engine of job growth.
Robert Bruno

and maintenance that benefited from

unconventional development in the
Marcellus Shale from 2008 to 2014.
According to the study, spending for
oil- and gas-related projects reached $5
billion in 2013, growing by 61 percent
from 2012. In 2013, those opportunities
created 4,600 construction jobs in
eight trades.
It was already looking good for 2014
with spending up to $6.5 billion by October.
A preliminary examination of
employment data in states related to the
Marcellus Shale play reveals that natural
gas exploration has been a strong engine of
job growth, Bruno says.
The study says from 2008 through
the first half of 2014, oil and gas projects
accounted for more than 72 million hours
of direct and indirect construction labor.
The study says the number of workers
employed at oil and gas projects was more
than 45,000 based on 1,600 annual hours
of work.
Bruno did not use state or federal labor
statistics to compose the study, saying that
labor organizations statistics offered more

pointed information for his purposes. The records he used contained data for
both union and nonunion workers.
This study reaffirms that responsible domestic energy production
is fueling our economic recovery, says Louis Finkel, vice president of
the American Petroleum Institute. We need to fully embrace this energy
renaissance and develop the affordable reliable energy all Americans need
and want.
BENEFIT FOR THE TRADES
The study also takes a look at construction activity in non-shale-related
oil and gas industries and finds that if it werent for the industry, there would
be several thousand construction workers without jobs.
The study shows that non-oil and gas industry construction activity fell
by 53.7 percent since 2008, when it peaked at 14.8 million labor hours. In
2013, the eight trades highlighted in the study only generated 6.6 million
hours of labor.
At one time, 7,100 full-time construction jobs were created annually;
however, that number has dropped to 3,300 jobs.
The transformation of employment in the oil and gas industry has had
an additional virtuous effect, Bruno says. An examination of national and
relevant state unemployment data for the construction industry indicates
that if it werent for natural gas projects, the region would have experienced
substantially higher incidences of construction industry job displacement.

Truck and Tank Parts/Components,

Hand and Power Tools
By Craig Mandli
HEATING SYSTEM IMPROVES WELL SERVICE EQUIPMENT PRODUCTIVITY
Problem
A well service company operating in the Bakken oilfield of North Dakota had been using equipment ill-equipped for cold-weather operation. Starting engines
and keeping them running in sub-freezing temperatures was a challenge. Fuel filters were plugging as diesel fuel gelled in the cold weather. The engine, hydraulic
and power-end lube fluids became thick in the cold, and were not providing the performance or protection needed, leading to increased downtime, damaged hoses,
premature pump wear and increased maintenance costs.

Solution
Maintenance supervisors decided to outfit the equipment with a heating system appropriate for extreme cold operation. Arctic Fox was contacted to design a
custom heating solution for this specific equipment and the operating conditions.

Result
Stand-alone heating systems were delivered, which provided fast starts and dependable operation. These systems warmed the fuel and fluids, restoring the
protection and functionality that had been lost due to the cold temperatures. 800/654-5382; www.arctic-fox.com.

HYDRAULIC TRASH PUMP USED TO MEET WASTEWATER PROCESSING DEMANDS

Problem
Carpinteria Sanitary District was using a towable 4-inch trash pump to dewater a water and grit slurry. On the day the
dewatering was scheduled, the pump stopped working, as it could not handle the high concentration of grit. The district was in
need of a high-end trash pump.

Solution
The district scheduled a demo with a local product support specialist from Stanley Hydraulic Tools. At the time the district
was unaware of hydraulic trash pumps and their effectiveness. They ran the TP08 4-inch trash pump with the Stanley HP28 twin
power unit. The TP08, despite its hand-held size, is capable of pumping 800 gpm and up to 4-inch solids.

Removable, reusable weatherproof
insulation barrier protects pipes,
valves against cold
By Ed Wodalski
Designed as a low-cost alternative to expensive aluminum-clad
insulation, the flexible weatherproof barrier from Insulation Snakes
provides certified R-11 (United States) protection that can be easily
removed and replaced. The full line of original wrap ranges from the
6-inch-wide by 6-foot-long Mini Garter to the 96-inch by 40-foot-long
Maxi Bull Snake. Custom sizes are available.
The 1220 Garter (12-inch by 20-foot) removable and reusable weather
barrier, part of the Insulation Snake line of protective products, can be
spiral wrapped around pipes, vessels, tanks and valves and secured using
a Snake Strap. The wrap is made from environmentally friendly fiberglass
batting encased in a 5 mil, UV-treated polyethylene vapor barrier.
To make it removable, we recommend you use straps, says Tim
Burns, sales manager for Insulation Snakes. You can use tape, but it
sticks to the polyethylene and its hard to remove.
The Pro Snake line of wrap, designed for spiral installation, includes
starter and end straps.
Its basically the same product but now you have a strap attached,
he says.
The Pro Snake line ranges from the 12-inch-wide by 6-foot-long
PS1206-2 with 2-foot straps to the 96-inch-wide by 40-foot PS8440-10
with 10-foot straps.
A third line of pipe protecting wrap, the Sidewinder, is made for lowclearance applications or for pipes close to another pipe, building or wall.

1.

Instead of winding around a pipe, it goes on like a hot dog in a bun,

Burns says. It goes on top of the pipe and straps on; every foot theres
a strap. It goes on and off very easy and looks a lot better as a finished
product.
The Sidewinder ranges from the SDW0606 (6 inches wide, 6 feet
long) for wrapping 1/4- to 1-inch instrumentation tubing to the SDW9640
(96 inches wide, 40 feet long) for covering 24-inch maximum outside
diameter pipe.
For larger objects, such as flanges, hammer union connections or
in-line ball valves, theres the Snakebite line of wrap.
The Snakebite is designed for the valve itself or something you need
quick access to, Burns says.
Standard sizes range from 12 inches wide for a 1-inch maximum
outside diameter pipe or valve to 96 inches wide and 40 feet long for 24inch pipe. Insulation Snakes also offers a product specifically for insulating
tanks and vessels. 888/696-2567; www.insulationsnakes.com.

winter walking is a lot like safe winter

The scope of the risk may surprise

WALK LIKE A PENGUIN

Humans werent designed to walk on
slippery surfaces, but penguins do it all the
time, so we can learn a lot from them. Call
it a shuffle or a waddle, the main idea is
to keep both feet on the ground as much
as possible while keeping your center of
gravity over your feet.
Be especially careful while getting in
and out of your vehicle. Your body is in an
odd position, so use the vehicle for support.
While walking on slippery surfaces, spread
your feet a bit so you have a wider base and
point your feet outward. Bend over a little
and walk flat-footed with slow, short steps.
Extending your arms a little helps you keep
your balance.
Sure, its cold and you may want to
put your hands in your pockets, but that
changes your center of gravity. It also
makes it impossible for you to use your
hands and arms for balance or to break
your fall. Keeping your hands free will help
you avoid landing awkwardly if you do fall.
There are other common sense tips
that we sometimes forget in our haste: use
handrails on steps, clean snow and water
from your shoes when entering buildings,
dont carry heavy items on snow or ice and
avoid quick actions.
In short, whether youre walking or
driving, slow down and take your time.
