Over the past ten years, we have developed a really good system of plating for the sma ller workshop! We have
become a leader in this field because our kits are a practical size to plate small parts on vehicles. They come
complete, and have a superb operating manual. We have avoided 'chemistry jargon' like the plague, and the kits
come with the ingredients pre-weighed, all you have to do is add distilled water! They all work using 6 or 12
volt batteries or rectifiers and assemble easily using a few items usually found in any workshop.
Since 1990, we have sold thousands of kits to the ordinary hobbyist, car & motor cycle restorers, antique
phonograph & telephone restorers, prototype workshops, schools, gun repair shops and model toy
collectors/restorers. These kits range from a Brush Plating kit that is ideal for a hand gun, to a Triple Chrome
kit for plating car & bike parts, to a Workshop kit for the serious restorer, or for starting a small plating
business. We can even customize a kit for you; just let us know what you are trying to do!
You will be able to plate as well as, if not better than, a commercial plater because we basically use the same
procedures and chemicals (except cyanide). Our customers are usually willing to take a little more time on the
preparation, like careful buffing to avoid removing detail, and inspection of the part to ensure all corrosion is
removed, so they end up with a better job. There is also a distinct advantage in plating one or two items in a
small tank. You get better, more even coverage and the parts arent lost or dissolved! Imagine that precious
piece in a 500 gal tank swirling around with thousands of others -- will you ever see it again?
The actual cost of doing your own plating is minuscule compared to commercial plater's costs and most
customers tell us they get their investment back after plating only 5 or 6 items!
Most of our chemicals are not regulated by the DOT as hazardous and most of them last for years, so you do
NOT have a disposal problem. If you decide to stop plating, most transfer stations will take these minimal
amounts free of charge.
Over the years, we've added lots of new products to our lineup. Most recently, we added our electroless nickel
kit, which plates an even nickel finish without any power source or electrical connections, and our Copy
Chrome kit, which duplicates a chrome plate without using any dangerous chemicals.

Electroless nickel plating requires no anodes, power supply or electrical connection of any kind. The process simply entails
mixing together some solutions, heating them to just off the boil, and then immersing the part to be plated. An auto catalytic
electrochemical reaction takes place and the nickel is evenly deposited all over the part being plated. The thickness of the plate
will depend on the duration of immersion. To stop the reaction, remove the part from the solution.
Like all plating, the brightness of the plate depends on the brightness of the part before plating. The brighter the shine initially,
the brighter the shine after plating. Numerous variations of the final finish are achieved by changing the surface preparation.
Electroless nickel plating is not new; it has many applications in industry. Because the system plates evenly over all areas of the part, even down tubes and holes, it is frequently used to plate
firearms and small hand tools. For the motorcycle restoration enthusiast, electroless nickel is a great tool for evenly plating the air cooling fins on many engine blocks, particularly older Indians
& Harleys.
Electroless nickel plates at an approx. rate of 1 mil (1/1000") per hour. Indoor decorative applications will need approx. 0.25 mil or 15 min. of plating. General outdoor items (hand tools, hand
guns) should receive 0.5mils or 30min. Items requiring high corrosion resistance should receive 1mils or 60 min. Our 1 liter kit will plate approx. 75 sq. in. of surface area with a bright nickel
@ 1 mil, or 300 sq. in. @ 0.25 mil. The 4 liter kit will plate approx. 720 sq. in or 2880 sq. in. @ 0.25 mil. Our 12 liter kit will plate approx. 1500 sq. in. or 6000 sq. in. @ 0.25 mil. As the
baths are used, nickel depletes from the solution. You will need to replenish this periodically, using our unique method of calculating the nickel loss. Additions to the solution may be made
with small quantities of Part A & Part C.

Electroless Krome operates in exactly the same manner as our Electroless Nickel kits. Electroless Krome is an alloy of nickel and cobalt. The cobalt gives the nickel plate it blue tint, and
imparts more hardness to the surface. Applied to a previously polished surface and then buffed lightly, the finish will match most commercial chrome plated pieces.

ELECTROLESS POT METAL TREATMENT KIT

The major problem with Pot Metal (Zinc Die Casting) is that it corrodes -badly! Its use is widespread in the automotive and
motorcycle industry, mainly because it is easy to cast into intricate parts. Unfortunately, the metal is easily subjected to
corrosion, particularly by mild acid attack. The zinc readily degenerates in the presence of even a mild acid such as tomato
ketchup.
Pot Metal will polish up and look very good, for about 2-3 days, then it rapidly dulls down to a leaden look. This can be
most unattractive on vehicles with lots of shiny aluminum or chrome. By polishing the part, then immediately plating it
with Pot Metal Electroless Nickel, the metal can be given a long term, bright, shiny surface, closely matching the other
components on the vehicle.
Parts made of Pot Metal and treated with Pot Metal TREATMENT may be plated with any of the following CASWELL
Plating Systems:- Electroless Nickel, Electroless Krome, Regular Nickel (usin g power and anodes), Copy Chrome, Copper.
The Pot Metal TREATMENT system also provides a thin layer of nickel all over the surface, to prevent the acidic action of
nickel, copper & Electroless Nickel & Krome baths, from attacking the pot metal. Repairs can be carried out before this
process, if soldering, or afterwards if copper plating.
It is important that you ensure all areas of the part are extremely clean, especially any pitted areas. These should be closely
examined for any black deposits, and they should be removed by drilling, bead blasting etc. In the event that the part will
require some repair, this may be carried out with Solder pastes, or by heavily copper plating, then sanding smooth.

Bright Nickel Kit
Our nickel plating kits are designed to provide a commercial quality finish on a miniature scale, in approx. 20
minutes. The finish can be applied as a final treatment, requiring VERY LITTLE buffing to obtain a high shine,
or as a base for chrome plating. If left flat, it is almost indistinguishable from cadmium plate.
Nickel plate has a very slight yellow cast to it, but in many applications, if polished, it can double as a chrome
plate.
Our formulas are from 'The Old School' as are many of our plating techniques, thus enabling you to rePROD #
uce a plate almost identical to the original specifications of long ago. All our chemicals are pre-weighed, so all
you have to do is to add distilled water. We have tried to keep the processes as simple as possible and have standardized everything wherever we can.
This Nickel Kit will plate a heavier onto most metals except pot metal, and it should be used wherever possible, especially under a chrome plate. This system is too
acidic for pot metal, which should be plated first in the special Electroless Pot Metal Treatment. If you plan to

COPPER PLATING KIT

NEW BRIGHT COPPER FORMULA
For the restorer copper plating must be one of the most useful repair tools there is. By applying layers of copper, and
sanding between applications, an incredibly smooth surface can be quickly built up, covering scratches and minor pits
caused by corrosion. Copper can be plated up to 1/8" thick within a matter of a few hours.
More extensive repairs can be made by the use of a soldering iron and solder, which can be simply melted into the pits and
sanded flat. A final layer of copper plate to seal over the solder filler can then be buffed and polished to a high quality
luster. The successive layers of nickel and chrome plate applied to this type of quality substrate, will ensure a 'show quality'
finish.
Copper can be used to 'electroform', making complete objects from pure copper, by simply making a mold
from wax & conductive powder, copper plating the mold, then melting the wax. Copper can also be
formed over lead molds, and the lead melted away afterwards. This has some applications for the person
wishing to rePROD # uce decals.
The system will operate at room temperature, but plates sm oother and faster at 100 deg.F. The copper
plate can be applied directly over BRASS-COPPER- NICKEL, but cannot plate directly onto STEEL or
ALUMINUM, which requires a 'strike coat' to be applied first.

Bronzing Kit
This copper plating kit is designed to plate non-conductive items with a heavy copper layer, with a view to either
bronzing or further decorative platin g, such as nickel and gold. It may be used on almost any type of non conductive
material, such as some plastics, leather, cloth, and dried plants, and even fresh flowers.
The technique for plating baby shoes is exactly the same as almost any other object, so we have chosen to use this
procedure here as an example. As long as you can paint the object with an adhesive or lacquer, and apply copper
powder to it, then you can copper plate it. Once copper plated, any object can be nickel and or gold plated, or bronzed.
Baby Shoes. Wash the shoe and laces separately in detergent and allow to dry. Tie the laces, and allow them to fall
naturally Spray or brush on to the shoe, one coat of lacquer, shellac or varnish, thinned 10% with lacquer thinner.
Allow to dry.
Spray or brush a second coat of lacquer to the entire shoe, and the laces. Lift the tongue into place and ensure it and
the laces are in the desired positions. Allow to dry. Apply one coat of CASWELL Conductive Lacquer Paint using a
small spray gun,. (You may need to add more solvent if depending on your spray gun). The coating should extend into
the shoe as far as possible. Allow to dry. Make sure the wires are well coated, otherwise you will not conduct power to
the surface of the shoe. Also ensure you completely cover the article in Conductive paint, including the sole. Make
a loose cradle of two or three loops of copper wire for the shoe to sit in. This is going to be suspended into
the copper plating tank, so needs to be secure. Weight the toe of the shoe with lumps of any scrap metal or

To aid the plating procedure, you may dip the object to be plated in CASWELL Tinning Solution.. This
coats the entire part with a thin layer of tin, which aids in even plating coverage. The part should be
dipped into the solution for approx. 30 seconds, then rinsed in fresh water. This procedure is optional. Use
only if you are experiencing difficulties in obtaining even coverage of the copper plate. Suspend
the
shoe from the tank bar, which should already be wired to the power unit, and immerse in the copper
plating tank. The shoe should immediately start plating. The average baby shoes will measure
approximately 25-30 square inches, so should be plated at the rate of (1amp per 20 sq ) 2 -3 amps.

Plate for approx 1 hour. Remove and inspect. Sand/emery any rough spots. Continue plating for about 3 -5
hours, checking periodically for any rough spots, which should be sanded smooth. Should there be any
parts which have not taken the plate, you may apply more conductive paint to these areas and re-plate.
The shoe in the example pictures is made of suede, so the texture will be somewhat rough. Smooth cloths and leather will have different appearances.
Rinse the part off, then polish lightly and then proceed to the section in this book, ANTIQUE AND BLACKENING TECHNIQUES, for a choice of antiquing finishes,
- or plate with nickel and/or gold. If plating with nickel, gold or silver, then the part needs to be polished to a high shine, to give best effect. Brush the shoe with steel
wool or a soft buffing wheel and compound to remove the antiquing oxides and expose the copper on the high spots. Spray with a coat of clear lacquer to seal.

The Triple Chrome Plating Kit

This 3 step chrome plating kit has been designed to provide a show quality nickel, copper & chrome plate on items
such as headlights, bezels, bumperettes, nuts & bolts, brackets, etc. It can be applied to copper, steel, brass, and zinc
die cast substrates. There are three different processes, each with its own tank & chemicals, as well as the
Electrocleaning and Electrostripping tanks. The chrome plate is always applied over a nickel plate, which will fuse to
most metals quite readily. The copper plating system is used as a hi-build filler to cover blemishes, pits and scratches.

The 16 gal Triple Chrome Plating Kit

This kit has been especially designed for the smaller workshop requiring high quality Chrome plating facilities for small to medium
sized parts. It is ideally suited to operate as a small business venture, plating automotive and motorcycle parts.
The kit is supplied with 2 rectifiers, the smaller one, a 25 amp capacity, is designed to operate the copper and nickel plating tanks,
with a maximum capacity of approx 300 sq. inch surface area. Amperage requirements for copper and nickel plating are
approximately 1 amp per 15 square inches of surface area. The larger rectifier, supplied by Aldonex Inc, is a 250 amp capacity,
specifically designed to control the higher demands of the Chrome Plating tank.
Amperage requirements of chrome plating are 1+ amps per square inch of surface area.
The 5 tanks supplied are constructed of HDPE, a chemical resistant plastic. They come with a lid and a metal locking ring
to ensure tanks are completely safe and sealed when not in use. Dimensions are:21" diameter 19" depth

Chrome plating can be used for two purposes:
A. Hard Chrome Plate.
Usually used to build up shafts or areas on steel that are subject to severe wear. The hard chrome plating process can take several hours to build up. The procedure is
discussed extensively in The Complete Plating Manual, paying particular attention to the hard tipping of cutting tools.
B. Decorative Chrome Plate.
Most chrome plate is considered 'decorative'. It is a very thin layer, approx. 1/100th the thickness of a human hair, which is applied over a NICKEL plate. Chrome
offers NO corrosion resistance, as it is porous, so the nickel does all the protection. The chrome merely gives the nickel a 'blue' look, and stops it tarnishing.
Decorative chrome plate can be considered a 'clear coat' over the nickel 'paint job'. This chrome plating kit can therefore be considered only as an accessory to a
nickel plating kit, unless it is used for hard chroming.
Unlike nickel and copper plating, chrome uses a high current of one amp per square inch of surface area to be plated. This makes the larger operations, such as plating
bumpers and some wheels, more impractical for the smaller workshop. However, repairs to existing chrome plate can be carried out using this kit in conjunction with a
home-made brush plating wand.

You can chrome plate with a 6 or 12 volt battery, or charger, but if larger parts are involved, you may need to use 2
batteries. The higher amperage required can also be controlled by the inexpensive construction of a 'salt water rheostat',

Acid mist is PROD # uced during the chrome plating process from the vigorous action of the higher current used. Fume
Control Balls and chemical mist suppressant control this mist, which are supplied with the kit.
The Chrome Crystals supplied with the kit contain sufficient chrome to plate over 500 square feet of chrome plate per
gallon of made up solution. You should never need to replace this material. The Chrome is removed from the Chromic
Acid solution, and the anodes are not dissolved, as with the nickel and copper plating systems. It is unnecessary to replace these anodes. Should you ever wish to
dispose of the solution, we can supply you with a chemical to make the Chromic Acid solution safe to dispose in the drains.

FUME CONTROL SYSTEM

Due to the high current usage during chrome plating and anodizing, a mist of acid is produced from the
tank. This can become a nuisance due to the corrosive nature of the product and its yellow stain. The
Complete Plating Manual shows how to control much of this, using an inexpensive 'fume' hood made
from an old cooking stove/range hood.
Commercial platers also use these floating solid plastic balls to reduce this mist. They are left in the
tank and cover the entire surface of the chromic acid solution, reducing the emissions. They will reduce
the mist by as much as 70%, saving chemical and keeping the entire operation much cleaner. Approx
90 x 1" polyethylene floating balls are supplied in each pack, which is sufficient to cover one of our 3.5
or 5 gal plating tanks.
These balls are also great for other plating tanks, helping to keep heat in the tank, thus requiring less
energy to heat the tank.

After preparing the part to accept the process, the part is simply
dipped into a solution for a few minutes. The zinc & the chromate
react to form the new colors. To improve those older zinc (pot
metal) castings, plate with a fresh zinc plate before chromating.
Steel parts that have been previously plated with zinc can be
chromated with no further pretreatment. Zinc alloy die cast parts
may be surface activated by immersion in a weak acid. Full
operating instructions are in the manual. The Blackener provides a
deep black finish, similar to a Black Oxide, but with much better
corrosion resistance.

Caswell Brass Plating Solution is a unique cyanide-free alkaline brass plating system which plates a true 70/30 yellow-green plate (pale brass) directly onto steel and
bright nickel plated surfaces. It can be used for heavy brass plating which will be antiqued (oxidized and relieved). The system may also be used for decorative heavy

ALUMINUM ANODIZING KIT

This kit is designed to provide a professional finish to aluminum substrates for a variety of small products. Ideal
for small objects such as vehicle trim, boating accessories, electrical components, household object s, etc.
The Anodizing System:Using a sulfuric acid process (a practical method for small workshops) most grades of aluminum can be anodized.
This process is best suited to sheet metal applications, however aluminum castings can also be treated very
successfully.

What is Anodize?
During the process, a thin film of clear colored oxide is formed over the aluminum. This is actually grown out of
the metal, and is a part of the original piece, unlike a plated surface which is likely to peel from the substrate. This
film is ALUMINUM OXIDE, a very hard protective layer. Because this layer is so hard and corrosion resistant, it
makes it the ideal and often preferred choice for the restorer of vehicles with aluminum trim etc.
At this stage of the process the film has microscopic
pores (see picture left) which have to be sealed (or
'fixed') by dipping the part into boiling water for 15 minutes. The part may be colored prior to boiling by
simply soaking in our range of professional anodizing dyes. An almost infinit e range of colors can be PROD #
uced by mixing the dyes together.
The system can be operated from a 12 volt car battery or charger. One gallon of regular strength battery acid
(sulfuric) is required to make up the anodizing solution. The anodize layer is formed at the rate of 0.0001" per
7 minutes. A 15 minute rate is ideal for most applications.
Due to the hardness of the Anodize finish, it is ideal for areas
where scratching from road grit etc. is likely to pose a problem.
It can be considered permanent if the part is buffed and polished
before the treatment is carried out. The finish can be made to
look like a chrome plate, and no further buffing or polishing will
be required.
The most exciting part of aluminum anodizing, is without doubt,
experimenting with the amazing array of colors and effects one
can produce, with a little practice and skill. The metal can be
pretreated in a variety of ways, polished, scratch brushed etc., the
anodize film grown, and then the colors applied prior to sealing
the anodize surface, permanently locking the colors into the
metal. The system is ideal for paintball guns, model aircraft

colors. The dyes are in concentrated liquid form, a 4oz bottle makes up 2 gals of ready to use dye.
To make up different colors, we suggest that you make up the colors to the correct dilution first,

Anodized aluminum has a very durable surface that is unaffected by weather and many
chemicals. The surface will resist high temperatures, even a blowtorch, for short periods.
The issue of safety whilst anodizing is addressed by the use of plastic fume balls and a chemical
mist suppressant, both of which float on the surface of the anodizing tank. During operation, no

Plug 'n Plate is a new concept
in plating small parts. Our
unique mains power pack
supplies just the right amount
of power allowing you to
brush, and in some situations,
dip plate your smaller
components. The Plug 'n Plate
system will also allow you to
patch repair areas where the
original plating has worn
away. Plug 'n Plate is ideal for vintage vehicle restorers, antique
collectors and dealers, and small workshops doing prototype work.
What could be simpler? The Plug 'n Plate wand is attached to the red
plug on the Power Pack, and the alligator clip is attached to the workpiece. The end of the wand is covered in an absorbent bandage, which
is soaked in the plating solution for a few seconds.
By stroking the part with swift brush strokes, the circuit is closed and
the plating metal bearing solution goes to work, depositing its
beautiful layer onto the object. If you wish to plate small objects all
over, then use the PlugNPlate system by suspending the part into the
solution from the negative alligator clip, then place the wand into the
solution on the edge of the bottle. The circuit will once again be
completed and plating will take place. This technique is ideal for
small intricate parts such as jewelry.
Gold Emblem Plating The system must be applied to a nickel or
buffed copper plate surface.
1. Stripping. Removing the existing chrome.
Attach a plating wand to the NEGATIVE side of your power pack.
You can clip the alligator clip inside the end of the wand, ensuring
electrical contact with the metal. Press the positive terminal plug to
the work piece. Make up a stripping solution of 1 level spoonful of
CASWELL ANODIZE & CHROME STRIPPER or SODIUM
HYDROXIDE or Lye, to 9 spoonfuls of water, in a plastic container.
Pour a small quantity of the stripping solution into a plastic cup. Use
only this liquid, and the original solution will stay fresh. Saturate the
wand with the stripping solution.
Stroke the wand slowly & gently over the work piece. The wand's
cotton will turn yellow as the chrome comes off. The work piece will
change color slightly as the chrome is removed.
To ensure all the chrome is off, apply fresh cotton and bandage to the
wand, then dip in fresh solution and lightly repeat the process. If no
yellow appears on the wand, then the part is successfully stripped.
Rinse the part in fresh water.
To remove chrome faster, you may attach the wand to a 12 volt
power supply, rather than use the PlugNPlate adapter.
2. Plating. Applying the gold plate.
Attach a plating wand to the red plug on the PlugNPlate adapter.
Pour a small quantity of Gold solution into a plastic cup. Use only
this liquid, and the original solution will stay fresh.
Saturate the wand with Gold solution. Stroke the wand slowly &
gently over the work piece. Initially you may increase the wand speed
slightly, then, as the gold color forms, slow the speed down to build up a thicker layer of gold.
The gold will become visible after 30 -60 seconds for 1-2 square inches of treated area. Repeat the gold application to increase the gold's durability. Finally, wash with
detergent, and rinse with water.
You may polish the metal with a proprietary metal polish. We recommend Collinite Metal Wax, as this has a very mild abrasive in it, which cleans off brush plating
smut marks and at the same time waxes and protects the plate. Use sparingly on silver and gold plate.

Simple 'Dip & Coat' method Works on Steel Only
The commercial gun blue manufacturers developed this new technique, as a more environmentally
friendly system than the commonly used hot application. Parts requiring blackening are simply placed in
the liquid at room temperature. No electrical power is required.
How to achieve professional results in minutes:- Thoroughly clean the part to be blackened by either
sandblasting, wire brushing, wire wool abrasive cleaning, or by scrubbing in 'VIM' or 'COMET' household
abrasive cleaner. Make sure you have removed all rust, paint, oil and grease. Immerse the part in the
mixed Black Oxide Solution and swirl around for between 30 seconds and 5 minutes. Alternatively, the
part may simply be placed in the solution for 5 - 10 minutes. Remove the part from the solution and rinse
in fresh water. Immediately brush on or dip into the Penetrating Sealant, and allow to soak in the liquid for 5-10 minutes. Shake off any excess and allow to dry
thoroughly before handling.

This unique kit has been developed to produce high quality reproduction parts, which can easily be plated with any of our
plating kits.
The sand casting technique is thousands of years old, and is extremely simple to do, providing you have the right equipment and know how! We have provided all the main ingredients in this kit to get you started within a matter of hours. From the
time of firing up your furnace, you could be plating 'new -old parts' within one hour!
Included in each kit is the famous book 'How to Cast Small Metal Parts', by Bill Cannon. He carefully explains how to make a
furnace, in less than one hour, using a metal container, (which is included in the kit) and an old hair drier, or blower. The
furnace can be run on propane gas from a barbecue, or charcoal. You will need to obtain 7 fire bricks and a bag of refractory
cement from a local fireplace store.
The ingots of CASWELL metal supplied are high quality, low temperature melting (650 0 F), and non corroding. It
will accept any of our plating systems. High quality detail will be produced using this metal. Replacement ingots can
be purchased separately.
A special, high quality PETRO BOND mold sand is supplied. The
fine mesh size of the sand allows for sharp definition of detail to be
obtained from the original. This material is blended with special oils,
which make it bond together when compressed. A complete novice
can set up the entire operation, and produce professional parts on his

I Think I Want To Buy A Kit, But I'm nor sure whether I'll Be Able To Figure Out How To Use It? - Understandable! We suggest a small investment of $25 in our
Complete Plating Manual. Reading through this book will show you how easy it is. If you buy a kit after buying the manual, we'll refund the $20 ($5 for postage) But,
this stuff is easy! We sold a kit to a 13 year old in Houston, TX and he's plating everything in sight. Also, if you get stuck, we're here to help.

Can I Store The Kit Without The Solution Going Bad? - Yes. You can put the kit aside for as long as you like. Just remove the anodes and securely attach the locking
lid. We recommend transferring the chrome solution into a glass container. The acid very slowly dissolves the plastic tank.
What Kit Would Be Best For Me? - Umm, why don't you give us a call, let us know what you want to do (i.e. chrome, zinc, anodizing, cadmium, nickel etc,) what kind
of metal you're plating onto, the size of the biggest part you want to do, the dimensions of the part (approx.), and you're favorite color and we'll figure something out for
you.
What Size Items Can I Plate? - Well, you can technically plate anything, but we recommend sticking to parts that are manageable. Don't bother with car bumpers or
rims. They require huge tanks, huge amounts of power, and way too much time. Leave items that large to the plating shops.
What If My Parts Don't Fit In The Tank? - Our manual describes several ways to get around this. One trick is to use a plastic window box, or a downspout cut in half, to
plate long, thin objects. Another is....well, we don't want to give away too many secrets.
How Long Will My Plate Last? - That depends on how long you plate your part for. The longer you plate it, the longer the plate will last. All our plating kits use the
same chemicals and processes as the plating shops that plated your parts originally. You can expect the same or better durability than the original plate.
What's The Hardest Part Of Plating? - The surface preparation. The real trick to a great looking finished product is getting the part to look great before you plate it. It's
actually quite easy -- Using our buffing wheels and compounds, and following the instructions in the manual, you can get the part looking like it's been plated, before
you plate it! Then you know you are ready to plate. The rest is simple.

Isn't Chrome Plating Dangerous? - Yes! But if you follow our instructions, and use the supplied fume control system and some common sense, you can chrome plate all
day and night without any problems.
Why Can't I Buy Just A Chrome Plating Kit? - You can, but it won't work unless you're plating onto nickel, or doing hard chrome for surfacing tools etc. Chrome is best
on a nickel plate, so our Triple Chrome Plating Kit has a nickel kit included. We also sell a Nickel/Chrome Combo Kit if you don't want copper, and a Chrome Kit if
you're plating onto nickel or you've already bought a nickel plating kit from us.
Why Would Anyone Want To Copper Plate? - Copper is probably the most useful kit we sell. Plating shops use copper plate as a kind of high build filler, and so do we.
Copper is an integral part of our Triple Chrome Plating Kit. It is plated on top of a nick el strike coat and allowed to build into a thick layer. Because copper is a soft
metal, it can then be buffed up to a high shine, smooth even finish. This removes any small pits or scratches or other defects that would show up in the final finish.
Copper can also be soldered using our special solders, to fill in more serious marks.
How Can I Plate Onto Plastic? - You can plate onto most non-conductive parts by using one of our conductive coatings. The part is coated with a conductive paint,
which makes the part conductive. You can then immersion plate the part in your plating tank.
Can I Use Your Kits To Plate Aluminum? - Yes! Using our new Zincate Concentrate, the parts are pre-treated and can them be plated in most of our plating kits.
Why Is A Pre-Treatment Required? - Because aluminum forms an oxide layer when exposed to air. This layer prevents plating from sticking and must be removed by
zincating. The zincate leaves a thin layer of zinc over the aluminum, which prevents another oxide layer from forming when removed from the solution. This oxide
layer also makes keeping polished aluminum looking good, so hard. A good wax or polish will prevent the oxide layer from forming for a few months.
If Copy Cad Isn't Cadmium, What Is It? - It's magic! No, act ually it is a type of zinc plate. We've changed the chemicals and messed around with the color until it was
right on the money.
What Makes Zinc and Cad So Similar? - They're both sacrificial coatings, meaning that they both sacrifice themselves to the metal to prevent corrosion.
How do you remove old chrome plate? - By using a weak solution of muriatic acid and a stainless steel or lead sheet, you can reverse plate the chrome off. Because
chrome plate is a very thin layer, the chrome is stripped very quickly. You can also buff the chrome off with an abrasive compound, such as emery, or a Brightex wheel.
How do you remove nickel plate? - By using an acid pickle made from diluted battery acid and a stainless steel or lead sheet, you can reverse plate the nickel. This
technique is described in detail in our plating manual.
Do I Need To Spend A Fortune On A Rectifier? - Nope! You can use a 12V or 6V battery and auto or motorbike light bulbs in the circuit to control the current. Our
manual demonstrates how to do this, along with a few other low cost power control ideas. Rectifiers are useful tools if you can afford them, but not necessary.
What is a Rectifier? - A rectifier plugs into the mains and converts mains current into a usable current for plating. A rectifier is all you'll need to provide power to your
tank. Rectifiers are available in several different output sizes.

Do You Do Brass Plating? - Yes. We have a brass brush plating solution that contains cyanide. It is not suitable for immersion plating. We are still looking for a good
immersion system.
How About Silver Plating? - Our Silverplater and Silversmith products do a good job of silver plating small objects safely. We also have a cyanide free Silver Plating
Solution as well.
How About Gold? We have a very good cyanide free gold plating solution, which can be brush or tank plated.
How Big Are The Tanks? - The tanks we supply are High -Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and are excellent for plating in. The Gal Copy Cad Kit and Miniature Repair
Shop use 1 gal tanks that are 8" dia x 7" deep. The 1 gal plating kits use 2 gal tanks that are 9" dia x 9" deep. The 2 gal kits use 3 gal tanks that are 12" dia x 10" deep.
The 4 gal kits use 5 gal tanks that are 12" dia x 18" deep. The 16 gal kits use 20 gal tanks which are 22" dia x 20" deep.
What Is Aluminum Anodize? - It's a very hard coating that is electrochemically grown out of the aluminum. It is great for corrosion resistance because it is so hard, but
if it does become dull and need polishing, forget it! It takes on the appearance of the aluminum before it is anodized, i.e. If the aluminum is polished and shiny, the
anodize will be shiny. If it is rough, sand cast, the anodize will appear similar. It can also be colored using a million different combinations of our new range of
professional quality dyes.
If Polishing Aluminum Is So Hard, Why Would Anyone Anodize Anything? - Because aluminum oxidizes so quickly, it requires almost constant polishing to keep it
looking great. Anodizing the part prevents the oxidization process, and maintains the finish much longer. It also resists scratching. The downside is that once the
anodize has become dull, the only thing to do is to chemically strip it using Anodize Stripper or sandblast it off, then re-apply.
What Is Electroless Plating? - Electroless plating requires no power source. The metal is deposited on the part using a complex chemical reaction, rather than being
forced onto the part by a power source. Electroless plating usually requires that the solution be heated to high temperatures (190F) for the reaction to take place.
What Are The Advantages Over Regular Electroplating? - Firstly, you don't have to spend money on a power source and you don't have to make any electrical
calculations or connections. You don't have to worry about anode placement, because the solution will plate anywhere that it contacts, even inside tubes. You get very
even coverage. It fills in pits and plates inside odd shapes easily.
What Are The Disadvantages? - Because the solution needs to be heated to high temperatures, it needs to be placed in a suitable ceramic lined container and placed onto
a heat source, like a range or grill, so you're limited in the size of the part you can plate by the size of the tank. You can't use a metal tank because the solution will
actually plate the tank itself. Also, the metal plates out of the solution, so it needs replacement much more quickly than regular electroplating solutions.
What Electroless Systems Do You Sell? - We have three different electroless kits, a Nickel, a pot metal treatment and Krome. Our nickel kit will plate most metals. The
Pot Metal Treatment prepares pot metal for plating in other kits, as well as imparting a protective finish. The Krome is actually a nickel kit with extra chemicals added
to give the finish that distinctive Chrome look. It's much safer and easier than a real chrome plate.
Will Your Gold Refining System Work On Circuit Boards? - Yes it will. The kit includes an excellent video and some interactive computer software for Windows
95/98 users that explain the process in detail.

to heat the work piece to 380C and 'tin' the surfaces to be joined with the TECHNO-WELD rod - the TECHNO-WELD
alloy diffuses into the surface, changing the composition and reducing the melting point of the parent alloy. The second stage is to reheat the mated surfaces to 380C,
allowing the surface layers to fuse together. Any general heat source appropriate to the job can be used, such as an Air-Acetylene or Air-Propane Blowtorch. No need to
raise the temperature of the job dangerously near the melting point of the Alloy itself, avoiding the possibility of sudden collapse of the job.
NO FLUX/FLUX FUMES - The process requires no Flux at all, and is therefore free from toxic flux fumes There is no need for special cleaning processes after the
work has been done. Any joints that have been prepared with TECHNO-WELD can be ground back and painted or plated without the possibility of the coating 'spoiling'
due to flux migration.
A STRONG FUSION WELD - TECHNO-WELD forms a true Fusion Weld. Although the welder is not heating the work piece up to it's melting point, the area of work
piece under the correctly applied TECHNO-WELD will melt and form an alloy with the TECHNO-WELD material without high local temperatures The resultant
material is very hard (like a soft version of mild steel), has good tensile and compressive strengths which serves to reinforce the join or filled area.
VERSATILE - TECHNO-WELD is effective on virtually all grades of Aluminum Alloys, including special derivatives such as MMC's, Birmabrite (Land Rover

EPOXY GAS TANK SEALER

Resistant to all fuel additives
Using the very latest in 2 part Epoxy Resin technology, we have developed a simple yet very durable lining
for all fuel tanks. It will handle all types of fuel, and is resistant to all fuel additives. This type of Epoxy has
much better bond strength than single component products, with strengths of up to 3000 psi, and this higher
strength reduces the need for a clinically clean surface, as the epoxy actually prefers to bond to a rough rusty
surface.
To prepare the tank, simply place several nuts & bolts inside and about a pint of lacquer thinner, MEK or
toluene. Shake the tank around to dislodge any loose particles, then drain off the liquid and allow to dry. This
procedure removes any oils left over from t he fuel.
Block off any weeping seams or holes by placing duct tape over them, and fill any ports with putty, then mix
up the Epoxy Gas Tank Sealer and pour into the tank. Slowly rotate the tank in every direction for several minutes, then pour out any excess resin. Allow to harden
overnight before putting into use.

Without Zincate Pre -Treatment For Aluminum
Using CASWELL Zincate Solution, aluminum can be pre-treated, and then plated in one of our plating kits. The problem:- Aluminum forms an oxide layer the minute
it is exposed to air. This presents a problem when plating aluminum, as the oxide layer prevents the plate from sticking. By using the Zincate process as a pre-plate dip,
we chemically remove the oxide layer and at the same time, apply a layer of zinc. The zinc protects the aluminum until it is ready to be plated. As the part is lowered
into the plating tank, the zinc is etched away by the nickel solution and plating proceeds onto a clinically clean surface.
The process:- Bead blast the part to remove all heavy oxides and contaminants. Buff & polish the part to the required shine. Thoroughly degrease the part in either
CASWELL SP Cleaner or a suitable solvent such as acetone or lacquer thinner. Make up the zincate solution per instructions. Heat the solution to 75F Immerse the
solution for 15 sec. to 2 minutes. Immersion time will depend on the alloy, zincate condition and temperature. If the alloy reacts violently with the solution, then shorten
the time immersed. If no reaction is visible, then immersion times can be extended.
A uniform gray appearance is usually a sign of a properly zincated surface, however there are cases where a dark, slightly streaked surface is acceptable. As the zincate
solution is depleted, there will be a noticeable increase in the gassing. You can replenish the solution by adding about 10% of the Zincate Concentrate, or simply make
up a new batch.
Rinse the part and prepare for plating in any of our nickel plating kits.

Here's a great new way to carry out repairs to pits in your castings.
-Plum-Loy is made from a fine dust of solder, mixed with tinning flux and cleaning agents. It can be painted onto a
surface with a small brush.
-As soon as the tip of a torch flame touches the thin layer of Plum -Loy, it melts, 'tinning' the surface. This uses much
less heat than required to melt a stick or wire solder, making it ideal to repair onto thin plated surfaces.
-Dents in the surface? Simply apply Plum-Loy to the area, melt it, then apply regular stick solder to 'puddle in' the
area, just like the old fashioned way of lead filling.
-Deep pits? Paint over a layer of Plum -Loy, heat to melt, then apply more to fill the hole.
-Plum-Loy is ideal for painting over those areas with small pits or scratches. It will bond to steel, copper, brass,
bronze, and nickel. It can ONLY be plated with copper plate. Ideally, you should try to 'sandwich the Plum-loy between two
layers of copper plate.
-To finish:- Sand or file down the area, then apply a copper plate to cover. Buff the plate and finish with nickel and

GLASS POLISHING KIT

Our glass polishing kit consists of one 2" diameter felt bob mounted on a 1/4" shaft, with a tub of
cerium powder - an optical grade glass polishing compound.
To remove scratches that you cannot feel with your fingernail, mark them on the inside of the glass
with a crayon or a piece of tape. (Deeper scratches may not be possible to remove, but their nuisance
value can be greatly reduced.)
Mix up a small quantity of the powder with some water to make a wet slurry, and dip the flat end of
the felt bob in it.
Mount the bob in the fastest electric drill available.
Using the FLAT bottom of the bob, (not the cylindrical side), work the slurry up and down across the
scratch until it is removed.
-Keep the surface wet - do not allow the slurry to dry out, otherwise the glass will get hot.

There are many objects that are not metallic, yet need to be plated. Most people are familiar with 'Baby Shoe Bronzing" where small leather
shoes are 'dipped' in copper. The process is carried out by gluing a layer of fine copper powder to the shoe. Once this has been allowed to dry,
the part is then immersed in the copper plating tank and a heavy layer of copper applied.
Plastic and other parts can be treated the same way. We have found that the copper powder is best applied to plastic, (car parts & models) by

The system is ideal for making felt bobs more abrasive. Using a knife or spatula, the thixotropic adhesive is

Leave the coated wheel to air dry for several hours prior to
use. Subsequent applications will provide a longer lasting
system. Gentle heat from an oven will speed up drying times

POWDER COATING SYSTEM - JUST LIKE THE PROFESSIONALS!

Here is a great way to paint small parts. The process is simple, requiring only an old electric oven to bake the
finish on. Heres how it works!
Firstly, the surface of the part is suitably prepared, just as you would for any other paint job.
The special gun is attached to an air compressor, and a power unit. The air blows the powder from the gun, and the power unit gives the powder a positive charge. At
the same time, the power unit is connected to the piece being coated, and so it has a negative charge. As the positive paint particles fly through the air, they are attracted
to the part and lay in an even layer over the entire area of the part. (This works a little like dust on a TV screen)
The part is then placed in an dedicated electric oven, and baked for a while. This cures the coating to a tough chemical resistant finish. It is important not to use a gas
oven, as the emissions from the coating are flammable.

POR-15 is a paint-like substance which acts as a total rust inhibitor and is also very effective as a metal filler. It's consistency is
approximately that of paint and it has very good spreadability (one quart covers 96 square feet).
POR-15 chemically bonds to rusted steel to form a rock-hard, non-porous coating that won't crack chip, or peel. It works by
isolating metal from moisture. Without moisture present, steel can't rust.
Thin, covering coats are best; POR-15 will accept all paints, including lacquer-based paints.
BLACK- used on frames, floorboards, under fenders, engine compartments, truck areas.
GRAY - used for marine and industrial applications, also excellent on concrete.
SILVER - contains metal filler and should be used on badly rusted steel to fill small holes and add strength to the metal.

A special fiberglass reinforcing fabric for your Floorboard and Trunk Restoration Kit.
Handling Instructions: Do not handle fabric with bare hands. Because it is a special type of fiberglass cloth, the fibers may pierce
your skin and you will experience discomfort. Your kit contains five pairs of latex gloves. Wear a pair of gloves (or other protection)
whenever you handle this cloth. As you cut the cloth, some fibers may fly into the air, so be sure to wear the mask provided while cutting.

Shipping Policy: Most products are shipped from stock PREPAID from Palmyra, NY. All other products are shipped PREPAID from the manufacturer. Delays may
occur when an item is shipped from the manufacturer and is backordered. We will advise when this occurs. We ship UPS in the USA & Canada. Some small items may
be shipped by US Mail to the USA & Canada. Next Day & Two Day Service is available by Federal Express on orders placed before 2:00PM EST. 3 Day Service is
available by UPS on orders placed before 2:00PM EST (+$5 pickup fee). CASWELL assumes no liability for a carriers inability to pick up an express order because of
bad weather or any other condition. International orders are shipped by surface mail, airmail or UPS at the Buyers discretion. When shipping by mail, we will insure
the package for the replacement value, but we will NOT be able to replace the package until the insurance settlement is processed (1-4 months). Some items are
considered Dangerous Goods when shipped internationally and must be shipped by Federal Express International. International customers should contact us to obtain a

Caswell Inc. makes no delivery time guarantees. Paying for air shipping simply means that an order will be shipped by air, not that it will arrive on a certain day. Pickup
times and backlogs necessitate this clause.
Damaged Shipments : Shipping accidents do occur. If damage has occurred, please call us immediately with the invoice number and tracking number of the package.
Please note the condition of the packaging and retain it in case the shipper requires an inspection. Our responsibility for damage ceases when the carrier accepts the
shipment, please contact the carrier to make damage claims.

Returning Goods : Returns may be subject to a 15% restocking fee. Before returning products, you should attempt to remedy any problems by calling us to receive
technical advice. Our plating kits use basic electrochemical reactions that have been used as the basis for electroplating for over one hundred years. Products may be
returned on the following conditions:The product must have been purchased within 30 days.
Crystals that have been made up into solution may not be returned.
The Complete Plating Manual may not be returned. Refunds for kits will be for $20 less than the price of the kit to cover the cost of the manual.
Products must be in new and unused condition and will be subject to inspection for damage or misuse prior to the issuance of a refund.
Shipments must be made by a carrier that uses tracking numbers and must be prepaid. Care must be taken to ship all Hazardous Goods with the correct
labeling & packaging. A copy of the original invoice must be included, clearly indicating any or all items being returned.
Products may not be returned without approval. Please call for an authorization and clearly write this authorization on the front of the package. Shipments
without this authorization will be refused.
