The Liberal Trifecta

Broadly speaking, the school of

liberalism was victorious in all areas:
religious, economic, and political. In
each of these areas we saw a school
of thought appear and take hold
which applied liberalism in its own
way, but always there was a rejection
of any tradition, and any authority
higher than the individual, with an
emphasis on personal liberty.

Our two parties, although one

are really just two sides of the same

The Right loves liberalism in the

realm
(capitalism,
deregulation, self-interest), but then
they contradict themselves by
fighting it in the social realm (samesex marriage, divorce, abortion,
secularism). The Left contradicts
itself from the opposite direction.
Both are confused, incoherent, and
gravely inconsistent. Because of
their own contradictions, they wind
up undermining their own efforts, as

nations

no exception. This is why John Adams,
the 2nd president, signed treaty stating
that America is in no way founded on
the Christian religion, which was
unanimously ratified by the Senate. Our
Constitution does not contain any
reference to God. It only mentions
religion in a negative sense which, for
obvious reasons, can never be used to
defend any positive religious truth.
The simple amendment, remedying this,
would open up conversation so far
remained impossible. After all, the
Constitution is not scripture, and
Thomas Jefferson said repeatedly that
he hoped future generations would
correct the errors hed missed.

Congratulations: if you answered

yet to most or all of these
questions, then you are a liberal!

Liberals Everywhere!
Consider these two statements:
Its my body, I can do what I want
with it!
Its my money, I can do what I want
with it!
The first statement is something wed
expect to hear from a modern
Democrat, in defense of same-sex
marriage or abortion. The second is
something wed hear from a
Republican, in defense of tax-cuts and
against market regulations. But guess
what?they both use precisely the
same logic, and it is the logic of
liberalism.
Confused? To clarify things, we need
to properly define liberalism.

Liberalism Defined:
Liberalism is not the name of a
political partyit is a philosophical
movement. It is not new, and in fact it
forms the foundation for the ideas of
both the American Right and Left.
To understand this, lets draw our
definition from Milton Friedman, the
famous capitalist economist who was
economic advisor to Reagan, a hero
of the Right, and a self-described,
adamant liberal:
He defined liberalism as:

the intellectual movement that

emphasized freedom as the
ultimate goal and the individual as
the ultimate entity in the society.
(Milton Friedman, Capitalism and
Freedom)

Individualism + Freedom =
Self-Interest

certainly had no business telling you

what to do with your body or your
sex-life. It follows then that
capitalism, abortion, and same-sex
marriage are just different products
of the liberal creed.

The Origins of Liberalism

In order to understand this, we need
to take a look at its historical origins.

Friedman understood that the twin ideals

of liberalism were individualism and
freedom. This is why capitalism,
especially laissez-faire capitalism, is a
specifically liberal idea: it argues for
economic liberty (rather than virtue or
community) and treats the individual
(rather than the family) as the basic
social unit.

Liberalism is a product of the

Enlightenment, which emphasized
argued for humanism, secularism,
liberty, equality, etc. Enlightenment
thinkers tried to root ideas in nature
and not religion, Because of this,
their ideas about man and
government had to be rooted in
reason, without reference to any
religious doctrines.

Capitalismeconomic liberalism
assumes that everyone will act in their
own self-interest, but that this will
somehow still benefit society in the long
run.

Man: Anti-Social, Rational

Animal

But here is the catch: Friedman

understood that if people had the right to
act only according to self-interest, free
from obligations to the common good, it
had to apply not only to money, but also
to religion and morals.
If the government has no business telling
you what to do with your wallet, it

Because the Enlightenment thinkers

reasoned from nature, they said that
man was not social by nature. Mans
highest ideal changed from the
good life and God to a desire for a
maximum of freedom.
Instead of the scriptural doctrine
that it is not good for man to be
alone (Gen. 2:18) and the necessity
of fellowship (Eccl. 4:11-12),
liberalism taught that society is a
social contracta necessary evil
tolerated by the rational animal for
the sake of peace and material
