Pipeline Stability & Weight Coating Calculations

Elec file location

1. To determine the on-bottom stability of various GN Ubie phase 2 pipelines in the liquefied swampy terrain and in a typical water crossing
2. If required, calculate the thickness of concrete weight coating (of density 3040 Kg/m3) to give the pipeline a negative buoyancy factor of 1.3
3. Analysis based on the worst case scenario of "decommissioned case corroded pipe empty".

Calculation method
The calculations are performed in accordance with the following general equation:
Wpipe
Wbuoy
Where

>= 1.3

Wpipe = Total weight of pipe in air

Wbuoy = Weight of water/mud displaced

Method of analysis is based on in-house spread sheet detailed in the section Method of Analysis
Basic Data & Assumptions
The following basic data and assumptions were applied:Safety Factor

= 1.3

- MAJOR OIL Requirement (Ref. 2)

Specific Gravity of swamp water

= 1.02

- Typical for Niger Delta (from Ref. 2)

Specific Gravity of river bed

water/mud

= 1.442

- Assumed (from Ref. 2)

Density of concrete

= 3040 Kg/m3

Concrete coating of less than 25mm is practically not achivable. Therefore a minimum concrete thickness of 25mm will apply where required.

Further Assumptions
g
pp
p and water swamp
p or water
1)) Effect of marine g
growth has not been considered as there is little evidence of significant
marine g
growth in the applicable
swamp
conditions.
2) Stability analysis and weight coating calculations for river crossings have been based solely on forces due to buoyancy of the river water. Forces (lift and
drag) due to river current and tidal velocities have not been considered, because the pipelines will be trenched.
3) Calculated wall thickness less corrosion allowance has been used for the weight coating analysis.

GN Ubie Phase II Pipeline Mechanical Design Report

MAJOR OIL Standard Pipeline and Flowline Design Manual

March 2002

Conclusions
1) On-bottom stability analysis has been carried out for the various GN Ubie phase 2A Pipelines and weight coating thicknesses have been determined
where required. Analysis and results are presented in the individual work sheets, while the recommended coating thicknesses are in the summary sheet.
2) The required Safety Factor of 1.3 - with the determined weight coating thickness - is very adequate to ensure on-bottom stability of the Pipeline under
buoyancy conditions.
3) A minimum concrete thicknessof 25mm will always be applied for all submerged pipeline river crossings as mechanical impact protection.
