SAFETY RULES, SIGNS, SOUNDS AND LIGHTS

GENERAL SAILING RULES

(most used)

If you sail at starboardside you have priority

to those who dont sail alt starboardside

For small motor-boats applies: the boat that

approaches at starboard side has priority.

Small ships (<20m) give priority to large

ships (>20m). tugboats, towboats, a ferry,
passenger ships and fishing vessels always
have priority

A small sailingboat that has the sail at

starboard side has to give priority to a small
sailingboat that has the sail at port side.
When they both have the sail at the same
side, the boat that is sailing windward has to
give priority to the boat that is sailing lee side.

When there route intersect, and none of them

sails at starboard side, a small motor-boat
(<20m) always have to give priority to small
sailing vessels (<20m) and row-boats.
In the same situation a big motor-boat
(>20m) has to give priority to a big sailingship
(>20m), and a row-boat has to give priority to
a small sailing vessel (<20m).

Who ascends the main waterway from the

sidewater should not interfere the other water
users and give priority to all users sailing at
the main waterway.

THE BLUE SIGN

When you look downstream (with the flow direction), the right bank is at starboard
side. The left bank then is called the port side. A large ship that is sailing against
the current has to give a suitable waterway for the descent.
In some cases a large ship will sail at the left bank (your right side), for example
because the current is less at that side. In that case the skipper will unfold a
blue sign that features a white flickering light. When the blue sign is unfolded,
pass the ship at his starboard side (the side where the blue sign is unfolded).

Unfolded Blue sign

The larger ship always has priority to the smaller ship.

In some cases the situation is more difficult, because there are more boats passing. In that case
use VHF. When sailing in the Amphib group always follow the directions of the leading ship
(organisation). The organisation will have contact with the skipper of the large ship (with unfolded
blue sign), just to notify our intentions as a recreational group.

BEACONS / MARKINGS / BUOYS

beacons at the right bank
(looking downstreem) are red,

horizontal striped beacons,

green and red = split beacons
of equal waterways
