COOLING SYSTEM
Bleeding and filling the cooling circuit.
X06, and C06 or S06, and D4D
Before starting work, protect the electrical accessories
using plastic bags.

WARNING
- The engine must be drained when it is lukewarm.
- The engine can be flushed and refilled when
lukewarm or cold.
- Never flush a warm engine (risk of major thermal
shock).

DRAINING - FLUSHING
a Open:
- the cooling circuit at the cooling radiator lower duct,
- the expansion bottle and the bleed screws in order
to drain the circuit.
a Close the bleed screws.
a Refit the lower pipe without the clip.
a Refill the circuit with tap water to flush it.
a Disconnect the lower hose.
a Open the bleed screws.
a Blow compressed air into the circuit through the expansion bottle valve aperture to remove as much water as possible.
a Refit the lower pipe and its clip.
Note:
- Do not tighten the bleed screws.
- Fluid circulates continuously in the heater radiator (the heater radiator contributes to engine
cooling).

Note
Remember to flush the engine cooling radiator.

FILLING
a
WARNING
The engine must be stopped and the air conditioning system must be switched off so that the
engine cooling fan is not running when you start
the operation.
a Bleed the cooling circuit (see 19A, Cooling, Bleeding the cooling circuit).

BLEEDING
a It is essential to open the bleed screws
a Fill up the circuit via the expansion bottle aperture.
a Close the bleed screws as soon as the liquid starts
to flow in a continuous stream.
a Fill up the expansion bottle until the coolant overflows.
a Refit the expansion bottle valve.
IMPORTANT
- Do not open the bleed screw(s) while the engine
is running or hot.
- Do not open the expansion bottle while the
engine is warm (above 5 0 C) or while the
engine is running.
- Top up if necessary.
- Retighten the expansion bottle cap while the
engine is hot.
- Using approved equipment, measure the
degree of coolant protection.
- Check for any leaks.
- Make sure the passenger compartment heating
function is working properly.

WARNING
The following procedure must be observed to
avoid destroying the catalytic converter.
a Start the engine.
a Run the engine at1000 rpm, varying the engine
speed between 2000 rpm and 2500 rpm for the first
5 minutes.
a Run the engine at 1000 rpm, until the cooling fan
starts for the second time.
