Hello Sefians,

Am a First year M.E. Structures student all through my UG days and even till today i wonder how
the columns are located and oriented in a building. As columns are the most important part in a
building i want to know
1) on what basis can one determine the positions of columns in a building.
2)After locating the columns how to orient the columns.
Please someone kindly provide me some information
Thank you.

Orient the column so that the depth of the column is contained in

the major plane of bending or is perpendicular to the major axis
of bending.
This is provided to increase moment of inertia and hence greater moment
resisting capacity. It will also reduce (L)eff/(d) ratio resulting in increase in the load
carrying capacity of the column.

Dear Sir,
How to find out the major bending plane for a column in a plan. I have attached a sample auto
cad drawing in my first post on column orientation please go through it so that i can understand
the concept clearly n kindly let me where i can locate the columns and the reason for locating it..

The orientation of Column in buildings can be done on (i) Structural point of view
(ii) Architectural point of view. As far as possible, column may be oriented on structural point of
view. In this ,depth of column will be on longer dimension of span and width will be on lesser
dimension of span of beam. We have to orient the column in such a way that net moment in the
direction of beam higher side will be oriented by depth of column. For example internal column,
we have to see which direction net moment will be higher, the column depth will be oriented and
other side width will be oriented.
Normally circular coumn will be placed outside the building for achitectural point of view and
square or rectangular column will be palced inside the building. Major axis is perpendicular to
depth of column and minor axis is parallel to depth of column. For architectural point of view,
column is placed inside the wall flush to have nice look.

Hello V.M.RAJAN Sir,

Thank you for sharing the information. If you can please kindly elaborate how to orient the
columns by taking the plan i hav attached as an example.
Thank you,
Naveen

Hi sir,
In special cases the depth of the column will be in sufficent to resist the applied loads and also
due to the depth restriction from archietural point of view in such cases how to increase the
loading carrying capacity for a column without inreasing depth.
