GRP PIPES & FITTINGS

ENGINEERING
SERVICES
Stress Analysis
A Stress Analysis is a series of computer-assisted calculations, carried out by means of the Caesar II program, with
the aim of designing a safe and optimized pipe support system.
Checks are carried out to ensure that the piping complies with the standard load cases: operating, sustained,
thermal, wind, snow and seismic. Numerous variables are also taken into account, such as the forces acting on
equipment (for example, pumps, filters or vaporizers) or on the supports themselves.
Finally, the complete documentation is produced, which includes the stress report, showing forces and nodal
displacements, as well as isometric drawings indicating the type and location of each support.

Primary Supports
A standard document is produced for the support system, which is specifically designed for each project. This
includes the constructive and geometric features of the supports and the design of the bases, stops and guide
supports.

In addition
to these services,

each project.
This is done by means of a secondary support system, which is designed by
defining sections, profiles, heights and distances to the primary or main support. The
constructive details and joints between all of the different elements are also designed.

Above Ground Supports for Civil Works Projects

For certain projects, due to the relief of the terrain, the GRP piping runs both underground and above ground. In
these cases, a special system is designed, composed of metal supports, concrete supports, or a combination of the
two. The study which is carried out determines the best solution for the client, from both a technical and economical
point of view.

Special Supports for Culvert Pipes

In the cases in which a pipeline meets a road, motorway or any other type of infrastructure, systems are designed
in order for the line to cross these elements without them being adversely affected. Therefore, culverts are built in
one of several different materials (concrete, steel, etc.) and the pipe is nested inside it. In this case, the culvert
must include a support system, designed in accordance with the parameters of the project (diameter and pressure
rating), the joint system between pipes, the geometric features of the culvert, etc. In this way PROTESA is able to
design GRP culvert pipes of up to DN 3200 and PN 30.

PROTESA is a Spanish company, founded in 1959, which is

dedicated to researching, designing, producing and installing GRP
(Glass Fiber Reinforced Polyester) pipes and fittings.
The three main sectors in which the Company is active are the
water treatment, power plant and large water network sectors.
From the beginning, the Companys services have grown, in both
an efficient and qualitative manner, according to the demands and
requirements of its clients.

PROTESA Engineering was born out of the desire to provide

solutions for the requirements of civil and industrial contractors
as regards engineering and technical consultancy.
PROTESAs team is therefore made up of highly qualified engineers,
who, amongst other profiles, have wide experience in the study
and design phases of a project, as well as in project management
and site operations.

Concrete Thrust Blocks

Any change of direction in a pipe must be restricted by means of a concrete block. In order for these systems to be
defined, their geometric dimensions must be calculated based on certain determining factors, such as the terrain,
the pressure rating, the diameter of the pipe or the angle involved in the change of direction.
There are several different installation set-ups that affect these calculations and, therefore, we are able to provide
variations for single or multiple underground pipelines and designs for horizontal or vertical changes in direction,
or a combination of the two.
Once the calculations have been made, a document is issued in which the constructive procedures and typical
framework structures are also defined for this type of element.

Hydraulic Calculations
This study is carried out with the aim of analyzing different variables, such as water hammer, vacuum pressure or
flow velocity, in order to optimize the dimensions of the pipe and ensure that it is sufficiently protected.

Burial Analysis
This analysis is carried out using the AWWA Manual M45 2nd Ed. for underground piping under load conditions, due
to static weight, road crossings, groundwater or soil load at the crown of the pipe.
The calculations can be used to validate the installation, in terms of both pipe design and civil works parameters.
Having obtained the results of this simulation, recommendations can be made as to how the pipes should be buried
on site, such as the type of backfill material to be used and the degree of compaction, amongst other aspects.

Pipe Settlement and Connections to Rigid Elements

Depending upon the type of terrain and whether or not the installation involves a transition to a rigid structure, such
as a concrete block or an inspection chamber, a study must be carried out as regards the displacement of the pipe
that would occur in the case of differential settlement.
This displacement causes different mechanical effects on the piping, which can result in rupture due to shear stress.
In order to counteract this, various solutions are studied, such as, for example, the installation of rocker pipes, the
use of Bell & Spigot joints or EPMD expansion joints and recommendations may even be made for the civil works
to be carried out under certain determining conditions.

Technical Specifications
Each project is studied specifically and individually. For that reason, it is necessary to create a document which
specifies all of the constructive dimensions and technical characteristics of the piping and fittings involved in
the project.

Spooling
In order to break down the planned piping system of a particular project into the dimensions required for the
production of each individual pipe or spool, an isometric breakdown drawing is generated, which divides the line up
into pieces that can be individually constructed and transported.

Project Management
In general, projects tend to have a long life-cycle and PROTESA
has the capacity to take on the leadership of any project in
its entirety and all its complexity, from the design and planning
stage up to the commissioning of the installation, backed up by
the guarantee of numerous references and a multidisciplinary
team.
The main line of action is based on rigorous methodology, with a
commitment to value-added management practices, in order
to achieve high quality at the minimum possible cost
and meeting the requirements and expectations of the client.

Subsequently, once the feasibility of the project has been confirmed,

PROTESA is able to provide comprehensive management and
leadership services for its implementation.
This field of activity includes the management of the project
throughout its different phases: the planning of activities to be
carried out, the engineering processes as well as basic and detailed
engineering, procurement and contract management, control of
costs and lead times, supervision of the installation, commissioning,
quality control and all the official and legislative documentation that
needs to be considered.

At the initial stage of the project, PROTESA carries out a rigorous

estimated cost analysis and technical and economical feasibility
study, as well as producing a pre-project report.

Turn-key Projects
In addition to its engineering and consultancy services, PROTESA also specializes in turn-key projects, providing a comprehensive
service for project execution which includes the initial study, the design of the piping and fittings, their manufacture, finished product quality
control, shipment and on-site installation, as well as the hydraulic pressure tests.
Each project requires its own study and for that reason, PROTESA designs a
markets most demanding international standards.
