Proven skills
Port and Marine projects
have been one of BESIXs
dynamic areas of work
since the company was
first established.

BESIX focuses on the design and

implementation of on-shore and offshore
projects: locks, breakwaters, seawalls,
seawater intakes, quay walls, gas or ore
terminals, and LNG (liquefied natural gas)
jetties.

Investors are not only attracted by BESIXs

international experience, know-how, technical
skills and its innovative solutions, but also
by the marine equipment they own, allowing
work to get started quickly.

Equipment
BESIX owns a fleet of marine equipment: twoDipper
Dredgers, three Split Hopper Barges and numerous crane barges,
transport barges, tugs and work boats, but also two Jackup
Barges (Self-Elevating Platforms). The company invested in an
efficient fleet which can be directly available and which can achieve
serious cost savings during the realization of a project. This floating
equipment also brings a safe work environment, as it is carefully
studied in order to reduce risks and mitigate the remaining ones.

Large-scale challenges
BESIX provides a
fundamental added value
for infrastructure works.
Thanks to its strong engineering skills and
powerful implementation resources, BESIX
is capable of constructing complex public
works such as bridges, tunnels, dams,
carparks and railway infrastructure.
BESIX focuses on large-scale projects,
mainly commissioned by public authorities,
in which BESIX can contribute genuine
added value. Its civil engineering know-how
and experience, together with its in-depth
knowledge of the countries in which these
projects are undertaken, represent real
assets, that allow the company to deliver
highquality projects on time.

Ambitious targets
Environmental
Management Plan
BESIX participates in various projects in order
to proof its willingness to minimize its impact
on the environment.
Respecting its Environmental Management
System (in line with the ISO 14001 standard),
before execution of a contract, BESIX
obliges each starting project to undergo
Environmental Impact Assessment, after
which subsequent measures, controls,
monitoring and possibilities for improvement
must be developed in a specific project
Environmental Management Plan.
As a construction company, we believe in
and favour the efficient use of (raw) materials
and excavated soil is preferably re-used
onsite (instead of transporting it to distant
locations).
Furthermore, BESIX strives to diminish its
waste production by implementing waste
prevention, segregation and the maximization
of recycling and re-use.

Reduced energy
consumption
and better waste
management through
higher environmental
performance
Working in the framework of the ISO 14001
environmental management system and
its own energy management programme,
the BESIX Group achieved good energy
reduction and waste management results in
2011. The Group companies are aware of the
need to reduce their environmental impacts.

New life for wastewater

Wastewater processing is not only necessary
and obligatory in order to reduce our
ecological footprint, but also crucial in
preserving what is becoming a rare natural
resource: water.

We need to better protect this precious blue

gold and avoid any wastage. Public bodies
and private companies need to work together
to re-use treated wastewater from both
domestic and industrial sources.

The highest CO2

Performance Ladder
in the Netherlands
BESIX successfully reached level 5, the top
level of the CO2 Performance Ladder, on
October 26th 2011. This CO2 Performance
Ladder was originally developed by ProRail
(the organization in charge of maintenance
and extensions of the Dutch national railway
network infrastructure) and is used for
tenders in the railway industry. The reduction
level reached by a firm can give an award
advantage.

Reliable partnership
The industrial sector is a
market segment BESIX
wants to develop.
Therefore, BESIX places its skills in the field of
construction, civil engineering and technical
facilities at the disposal of its industrial
customers.
In the long term, BESIX will extend its service
to manage turnkey projects, aiming at merging
all aspects connected with the design, building
and implementation of industrial facilities.
The construction of oil terminals (e.g. Antwerp
terminal) and LNG jetties is a part of BESIXs
core activities as well.

Development & innovation

The Engineering
Department has been one
of the pillars of the BESIX
organization for decades.

Integrated Design
Approach: crucial to the
success of challenging
projects

The department comprises 7 sections: two

of which are related to types of structure
(Buildings and Civil Works), two are related
to material aspects (Concrete and Soil
Mechanics), a further two are related to
project assistance (Methods & Planning and
Maintenance & Systems Engineering), and
there is one offshore section (Engineering
SixConstruct in Dubai).

Another constant is the use of the

Integrated Design Approach, and not
just for coordination between the various
design activities. Engineering is not a discrete
step in the construction process, but a step
that takes account of the overall social and
landscape integration and life cycle of the
project, in which we need to take precise
account of not only the construction cost
but also the maintenance cost of the project,
andeven more so the environmental impact
on future generations.

The BESIX Technical Library and Technical

Knowledge Database are also managed by
the Engineering Department.
The development of the Methods and
Planning Department is an important
additional asset to ensure the timely
execution of the most challenging projects
tothe highest quality.

BIM increasingly important

The integration of the BIM (Building
Information Model), which began last year
was extended. This tool proved particularly
useful in a number of projects. During the
design phase these 3D models are used to
speed up the production of finite element
models, to make efficient concrete and
reinforcement drawings, and to reduce the
number of revisions through early detection
of inconsistencies between the structural
design and special technologies (so-called
clash detection).
BIM models were used extensively to assess
the tender dossier for the Grand Museum of
Egypt (Cairo). The complexity of this building
makes it almost impossible to encompass
it in 2D drawings. For the Cleveland Clinic
project, Engineering went a step further,
making intensive use of BIM models on site
for coordination between all parties involved:
essential for coming to grips with the
complexity of this mega project.

The Systems Engineering is a staunch

advocate of the integration of these
technologies in BESIXs design approach,
introducing excellent tools for managing this
integrated construction process. Following
the successful application of the principles
in the Netherlands for, among others, the
floodgate in Heumen, the knowledge gained
was used for the Via Invest projects the A11
in Bruges and the North-South Connection in
Limburg as well as for preparing the tender
documentation for thenew lock in Harelbeke.
