Christian Steingruber (July 2001): The History of the Braun Company ( taken from the official website with
friendly permission of Braun /Gillette Company ) 1921 Max Braun, an engineer born 1890 in East Prussia, sets
up a work shop for appliances in Frankfurt/Main.
1923 Braun starts producing radio components for the emerging radio industry.
1925 The advent of plastic pellets provides progressive manufacturers with new opportunities. Max Braun
produces many of his components such as tube fittings, dials and knobs in home-made presses.
1928 The company moves into a modern factory building on Idsteiner Strasse in Frankfurt whose architecture
conforms to the functional lines of the Frankfurt avant-garde.
1929 Max Braun now produces entire radio sets. He is one of the first to incorporate receiver and speaker into
one set. The company becomes one of the largest German radio manufacturers.
1932 Max Braun expands his product range and is one of the first European manufacturers to combine radio and
phonograph into one set.
1935 The company name with the vertically elongated "A" is introduced.
1936 Braun builds his first battery-powered portable radio. Easy operation and practical design are its
hallmarks.
1937 Braun wins an award at the Paris World's Fair "for exceptional achievements in phonographs".
1938 Braun now has a staff of 1000 workers.
1947 Production of radio sets and "Manulux" flashlights gradually goes into gear. Work on the first Braun
electric shaver makes good progress under Max Braun's supervision and supported by his son Artur.
1951 After Max Brauns death, his sons Artur (26) and Erwin (30) take over the business. They continue their
father's work . And like him, they strive to turn ideas into reality.
1952 Braun enters the field of modern electronic photography.Its first product is the "Hobby" electronic flash.
The Braun trademark with the vertically elongated "A" created in 1935 assumes its present day form.
1953 Erwin Braun sees an opportunity for radios, the main product line, only if they are distinctive. His visions
are "honest, inobtrusive and practical devices" that would significantly separate Braun from the usual pattern of
ornate trim and gold-threaded speaker coverings.
1954 The biggest deal in consumer goods in Germany since the end of the World War II is struck. Ronson
(USA) is licensed to manufacture Braun shavers. Prof. Wilhelm Wagenfeld and the Ulm School of Design
receive initial commissions to redesign the radios and phonographs. Braun health care is instituted. Its function
is to provide preventative medical care for Braun personnel and it is considered a pioneering step. It vidences
progressive thinking and social responsibility on the part of Artur and Erwin Braun.
1955 Braun introduces its entire radio line, which was redesigned in only eight months, at the Dusseldorf Radio
Fair. This attracts attention both nationally and internationally. The "Braun Design" is born.
1956 The "design" department is created. Its head is Dr. phil. Fritz Eichler. PA 1, the first mass-produced fully
automatic 35 mm slide projector, is introduced at the Photokina. Dieter Rams, initially employed as an architect,
and his colleagues create the Phonosuper SK 4, nicknamed "Snow White's coffin".
1957 Initial international awards for the new product line testify to growing product recognition.
1958 Braun receives two prestigious honours. The Museum of Modern Art in New York adds many of Braun's
home appliances to its collection as products of exemplary design. At the World's Fair in Brussels, 16 Braun
devices are applauded as "outstanding examples of German manufacturing".
1959 Braun introduces three products whose engineering and design are especially innovative - the "H 1", the
first compact space heater with tangential fan; "TP 1", the radio and turntable combination in which the needle

tracks the record from below; and the first component-based hi-fi set, the "studio 2". (Remark : In 1959 the
Braun LE-1 was born )
1963 Braun introduces the shortwave receiver "T 1000" at the Berlin Radio Fair Exhibition setting new
standards in engineering and design.
1964 The New York Museum of Modern Art opens a new design gallery with an exhibit of Braun's entire
product line.
1990 Braun Electronic GmbH offers a limited edition of its "Last Edition" hi-fi line and discontinues its hi-fi
production.
