Paradox for theSolstice

Can a planet conjunct itself? Or is this only possible when it conjuncts its antiscion?
That is the paradox. Let us take a closer look.
It is the antiscion which leads to this tangled question. What is an antiscion? It is a
mirror point that has its axis at the points of the solstices (0 deg. Cancer/0 deg.
Capricorn). The antiscia are reflections in relation to this axis. So a planet at 19.30
deg. Taurus has its antiscion at 10.30 deg. Leo. But the closer you get to the
solstice point the trickier it gets. A planet at 0.00 deg. Capricorn has its antiscion at
29.60 deg. Sagittarius. It is conjunct its antiscion!
Now an antiscion is considered to be the shadow of the planet and when the
antiscion of a planet conjuncts another planet it is as if the other planet is
conjuncted bodily, but in a covert or hidden way. So at 0 deg. Cancer and 0 deg.
Capricorn the planets shadow conjuncts itself. Hence the question, Can a planet
conjunct itself only here and nowhere else? But then isnt a planet always
conjunct itself, wherever it is?
How does one solve the paradox?
There are two things you have to do. First you have to view the chart as being in
movement. Secondly you have to engage your Imagination. What is a mirror point?
What does a mirror reflect? What happens to your reflection when you move? If you
move to the right, in which direction does your reflection move? What happens if
you and your reflection are identical and you then move forward? Physically this is
impossible as the closest you can come is to touch your nose to your reflections
nose. But in your Imagination you can move through the mirror to the other side. It
is then a point of transition from substantial to insubstantial and vice versa. Now
consider what a solstice is. The Sun has reached its highest or lowest declination.
At the winter solstice we have the shortest day and the longest night of the year.
These two points can be thought of, among other things, as gateways that lead
either into birth (0 deg. Cancer) or into death (0 deg. Capricorn).
they affirm that Cancer is the gate through which souls descend, but Capricorn
that through which they ascend, and exchange a material for a divine condition of
being. Thomas Taylor On the Homeric Cave of the Nymphs, Select Works of
Porphyry, p. 155*
At the winter solstice point the mirror flips, the critical point has been reached. The
long dark night that extends itself over time does not come. The longest night
makes way for longer days.
What the solsticial point shows is the balance between the actual and the potential.
Birth and Death are potentials of each other. So yes a planet can conjunct itself. It
carries both its actuality and its potentiality. The antiscia of a planet shows a
potential, which is insubstantial because it has not yet been realized. But a planet
carries its potential at all times. It has it and moves towards it.

Parallel and
Antiscion: for theSolstice

The word antiscion or the plural antiscia has a very arcane sort of ring to it. In A
Paradox for the Solstice I discussed its character as a mirror of the axis of the
solstices.
In this article I would like to acquaint you with the parallel which essentially is the
more generalised form of the antiscion and the contra-antiscion, as the opposite
degree of an antiscion is sometimes called. While an antiscion is the mirror or
parallel point of the longitudinal position of a planet with respect to the solstice
points, the highest and lowest declination of the Sun, the parallel considers the
declination of the planet itself. The declination of a planet describes its distance
from the celestial equator. So two planets with the same declination on the same
side of the celestial equator are parallel to each other. If they are on opposite sides
of the celestial equator they are contra-parallel. Simple enough if you have an
ephemeris that includes the declinations of the planets. The parallel is so to speak a
conjunction by declination rather than by longitude.
What is not generally known is that each degree of declination can be projected
onto the ecliptic. There is a geometrical relationship between the two. This can be
most clearly seen with the equinox points at 0 Aries and Libra which have a
declination of 0 and the solstice points at 0 Cancer and Capricorn where the Sun
has its highest or lowest declination of 2327.
Now the parallel aspect need not only be applied to a natal chart. It can also be
considered in primary directions. It is seldom used, but you will come across it now
and then in older authors.
How does one find the parallel aspect points in a chart? The easiest way is to use a
set of tables. I say easy as a set of tables can give you some idea of what generally
is happening. A computer programme may help to quickly calculate a value,
comprehension is however reduced to a minimum. I have two sets of tables. I
generally use is those of Erich Carl Khr, Primr-Direktions-Tabellen along with a
table of logarithms. The Khr Tables are useful as he includes the log tan of
declination for each minute of right ascension, interpolation is unnecessary. All I do
is look up the log tan of a planets declination and then refer to Khrs tables. So if a
planet has a declination of say 2211south (this is Jupiters current declination), I
look up the log tan, which is 9.61040, this is quickly found at 1135 Gemini/
Sagittarius and also at 1825 Cancer/Capricorn. Did you notice something? The
parallel and contra-parallel points have exactly the same character as the antiscion
points! The antiscion of a planet in Gemini is always found in Cancer, just as the the
antiscion of a planet in Sagittarius is always in Capricorn. This tells us something
about antiscions. The antiscion of the Sun is also its parallel degree (the Suns
declination when projected to the ecliptic will always be the same as its longitude).
With the rest of the planets we are in a sense aligning the planet with the Sun.

Jupiter has at the moment a longitude of 1930 Capricorn, so his antiscion is at

1030 Sagittarius. This means that earlier in the month he was contra-parallel to the
Sun. If you look in your ephemeris you will find that this was at the end of

and Contraparallels Latitude

Here is a secret which most astrologers dont know about. Here, unless you are an 8th
house native and already go about looking beneath, are the aspects that go, well below the
surface. And unless you are committed to seeing the unseen, and knowing the unknowable,
the practically invisible forces, you will, like 99% of the population who supposedly dedicate
themselves to this particular study, totally miss out, and totally live on the surface for the
rest of your life.

I am not going to go into how the aspect is calculated, or how it compared to different types
of calculations. I believe that these are all possible, but basically amount to the same thing.
Basically calculating the degrees of latitude allows you to view planets placed on line X.
Whereas the vast majority of the study depends solely on line Y, calculating line X allows
you the third dimension. It is that simple.

In the past the Antiscion was used. Some people still use this. Some people use it and are
unaware of how or why they use it, of the reasons behind its tabulation. It was created to
delineate a rough line of latitude. Latitude which the Sun follows and which the planets
follow in relation to the Sun as they are roughly on the same disk shaped eliptical path
around the Sun. The Antiscia are an old fashioned latitude calculator, and used today for no
other reason than that this was the tool for which parallels were most easily seen in precomputer days. Antiscia are simply a crude parallel calculator, they gave approximation of
latitude through the solstice point, but with a rather large degree of error. Today however,
the declinations are easily known, but not easily illustrated, not in relation to the longitude,
without a three dimensional chart. Now that would be something.

Here is the secret then. The Parallel and Contraparallel aspects by their nature, allow two
points which are not linked through elemental basis to be linked together, to be merged, to
be combined in signs and degrees which are totally random as compared with longitudinal
astrology. That is the core of it. This is the big secret.

But that is not all. The Parallel and Contraparallel are the pinpointers. These are the things
that give you real things which actually happen, whether or not other longitudinal aspects
are in operation. Many times a conjunction occurs, an aspect of great importance, an
opposition, or a square, but nothing apparent really takes place.

The way Astrology works is that the Stars make their rays felt on Earth. This is fine. This is
why planetary placements work so well. This is why temperament, why house dispositors
work. The Stars send down their qualities, their gifts and special talents, as well as their
doubts and atrocities. But the aspects are not complete. This is what is greatly lacking in the
vast majority of readings. The simple fact that Y by longitude is located and aligned with the

zodiac, while X is totally ignored. Well X is the degree of latitude.

Parallels are more important than longitudinal aspects. This is the great and rigidly kept
secret of astrology. Astrologers dont want to share it because it is that tough little nut to
crack, that little aspect which is the back door entrance to the third dimension. This is the
aspect that lets you see in colour while all the other astrologers are still seeing in black and
white.
If you have read as far as here, then you know what a parallel is, and you dont need me to
go into any more detail because you have done your own research on the subject, and you
understand the importance of such aspects. Instead of giving examples though of its use, of
its application I would like to give a definition, terminology which is distinctive and which
befits the parallel and contra parallel in comparison with its longitudinal counterparts.
The Parallal: Harmonious aspect. This aspect is as strong as a conjunction on its own
without the need for any longitudinal coinciding aspect. If the aspect is exact it should be
considered as an exact conjunction is considered, if not more powerful. The reason for its
power lies in the fact that its power can be felt even when there is no elemental connection
between the signs. This amounts to a latitudinal alignment in the sky, and like a
longitudinal alignment must be considered as its exact equal in strength and power.
The Contraparallel: This is an extremely potent force, more so than the opposition, it must
be read as an extremely strong force, which does not have to be antagonistic, it does not
have to be strained like the square, but it must be thought of like the Parallel in terms of
materialisation of reality.

The latitude of planets are as important as the longitude. It is no secret, it is just something
that an astrologer must work out before really seeing what is there. Looking at a chart and
then looking at it through latitude is like looking at a body and then looking at it through XRays. Latitude must be considered in relation to all of the planets and all of the major points
including the Ascendant-Descendant axis and the MC-IC axis as well, since these also are
calculated using both longitude and latitude.

Antiscion and the WinterSolstice

21

[if gte mso 9]> Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 <![endif][if !mso]> [endif]
[if gte mso 10]> [endif]The Winter Solstice is the split second in the year in which the Sun
is at its greatest angular distance from the Equatorial plane from the observer. This occurs
at Midday when the sun is at its lowest point in the Sky over the course of the year.

Zero degrees of Capricorn, marks this point. It occurs between the 20th and 23rd of
December in the Northern hemisphere. The Winter Solstice has for millennia been
associated with a very sacred, special period of time. From Stonehenge to the Pyramids, to
Christs birth, which most Historians claim was not really on the 24th December, this
astronomical event has been imbued with importance.
The Antiscia are the degrees of the Zodiac Year which correspond on either side of the
Winter Solstice beginning at 00 degrees of Capricorn. How do they work? Why are they
important? If you notice that a beautiful spring day in April can sometimes look and feel
exactly the same as a beautiful day in October, or at least that there are the same number of
daylight hours and night time hours you have the beginning of an explanation. There is a
seasonal significance to the Antiscia, being that days in late spring can be very similar to
days of early Summer, with early spring having similarities with late summer at least by the
amount of daylight that there is due to the Suns rising and setting positions through the
year.
The real significance of Antiscia though comes from its relation to that winter solstice. The
Solstice is a magical point in time, the turning point in the year, and it should be considered
as the real new year if you go by the Astronomical significance of it. So for an example: 15
degrees of Pisces and Libra are Antiscia to each other. They are both an equal distance away
from the Winter Solstice which would be 75 degrees. They have the same number of hours
of daylight, because the Sun at these point rises the same time and sets the same time. The
Sun during the day reaches the same degree in the sky and the Midheaven is at the same
distance from the equator. The only difference is that one side is increasing in light and the
other is decreasing.
In the Night Sky of the Winter Solstice, as seen from a northern sky, the three stars in
Orions Belt align with the brightest star in the eastern sky Sirius to show where the Sun will
rise in the morning after winter solstice. At about three BC it is said that three wise men or
three Kings came from the East following a bright star to witness the Son of God being
born. It is interesting that to this day this birth is celebrated year after year coinciding with
the Winter Solstice, the place where the Sun was traditionally thought to be re-born each
year.
To think of the immense meaning and significance not just in terms of the mathematical
astronomical point, but of what it means on a spiritual level, then the Antiscia connecting
through the Winter Solstice must has an astrological significance too and it is not surprising
that there are tables which delineate their positions.
How do you go about interpreting Anticia though? It is clear that even though many
separate cultures around the world throughout history and pre-history did not have any

cultural cross pollination, they still honoured the Winter Solstice. Take Amaterasu, the
Japanese Sun-Goddess, bringing Sunlight back to the universe on this day, Beiwe of the
Scandinavian Saami people, Chaomos ancient Pakistan, and then Natalis Domini of 4th
Century Rome. All of these sacred traditions are connected together by re-birth of the Sun,
by renewal of hope for the coming year, and all celebrated and honoured at the same time.
It would be obvious that any point that was close enough to the actual Winter Solstice point
would be both conjunct itself and in Anticia. So two planets or points both placed within a
degree of 00 Capricorn would be conjunct and in Anticia. The interpretation of points and
planets must therefore be linked in with that Solar Renewal. It is often described that
planets or points placed at 00 degrees of Cardinal signs are Aries Point, but if we take the
Winter Solstice for its true Astrological and Astronomical significance, that point ought to be
renamed the Capricorn Point.
Planets or Points that are Antiscia with each other are connected by the most sacred timing
in relation to the Capricorn Point, in relation to the Winter Solstice. The interpretation of
Antiscia, are that they mirror each other, they aspect each other through being
symmetrically equidistant.

Having explained Antiscia though, I believe that these points are only connected by the
Solar Year and only in relation to those Solstice points. They work like a mirror, but to get a
truer picture it may be more useful to consider the parallel aspects. Anticia are based on
Solar Longitude, they correspond roughly to the Solar Latitude throughout the year. But

since the planets do not pass exactly along the elliptical plane, looking up parallel and
contraparallel aspects are definitely a more accurate three dimensional representation, a
more complicated calculation, sure, but with technology these aspects are easily seen and
analysed

QUARES: Esoteric Meaning

28
09
2013
This is something Ive thought about before, but it never occured to me to put pen to paper,
because it was such a simple realisation. The truth is often far simpler and far less
complicated than I had ever imagined, so much so that I actually put it asside, in my search
for something a bit more satisfying. This introduction may seem obtuse but it is only so in
order to prepare the reader for a concept which appears so appallingly simple, it can be
shrugged off, yet which may permit him or her to see the world completely afresh. The meat
is here, I will not expand it beyond the initial idea, nor fluff it up with extra words beyond
this introduction.
The square is hard. Hard things in life result in pain, and suffering, argument, strife,
problems, difficulties. When two planets are in a square, they are said to be at war. Squares
are actually part of the grand cross which includes the 180 degrees opposition and the
midpoints between the squares are 45 degree octagon or (semi square).
When acting on impulse, and when acting according to animal nature (as humans are
biological) one planet must fight against another and defeat it or be defeated. This may be
physical or psychological. The Mars in a square allowed to act according to animal nature
will always kill, and always be violent, and always rape. Only look at a nature program, to
see this in action. Mars or Saturn in Lions and snakes are the same two planets in humans.
What makes us different from animals? Humans are able to take a square and decide not to
act on animal impulse. Whats required in such an act? Sacrifice. Plain and simple, the
square makes up with four other squares the grand cross. The Cross is a symbol of human
sacrifice. It is as simple as a choice between the Beast (act on animal nature) and the lamb
(sacrifice), the essential meaning in the book of Revelation. A second point on this esoteric
explanation is that of Christs birthchart, which is an angular GRAND CROSS. Do not forget
Christ had a choice to when Satan said that all of the world could be yours, but he chose
the path of sacrifice. So when confronted with a cross, square, opposition there is always a
choice,
you
can
fight,
or
you
can
sacrifice.

Why sacrifice? Christs sacrifice has lived on throughout two thousand years of history, it
was no fluke. While those who acted according to animal (beastial) nature, their effects were
detrimental to themselves and to others, why? because they did not sacrifice for God, which
is essentially the number one esoteric thing to remember.
How to sacrifice properly? As stated above, anyone can observe his or her personal squares
and life difficulties. If you have a Mars square you will get angry and want to fight or shout,
or put other people down (kill), proper sacrifice is learning to control these thoughts of
anger, and follow Jesuss teaching, (when someone asks you to walk a mile, walk the next
mile also).
Remember, the Lamb (sacrifice), will always be victorious over the beast (no sacrifice). The
Book of Revelation may be seen in these terms. Sacrifice which is down with the self interest
doesnt work either, it is only total sacrifice and subjugation to God which counts.Praying
for yourself or your family is not sacrifice. Praying to God as worship, as subjugation of the
animal nature to spirit, this is sacrifice.
Fasting, prayer, giving change to the poor, meditating, taking unfair criticism, and not
reacting to injustice: these are all little ways to sacrifice. You dont have to die like Christ, or
like a martyr. Following the ten commandments (or the eightfold path, or any form of
abstinance), is another path to sacrifice. Reading the bible, will obviously further explain
how it all works. My words are just a finger pointing to a greater teacher, from someone
who is on the path and knows the direction, and admittedly is not there

QUESTION:What is the book called that lists the planet's positions on

specific dates?
QUESTION:What are the names of some good ephemerides?
QUESTION:Can I find any ephemerides online?
ANSWER:An ephemeris (plural: ephemerides) is a set of tables showing
the planetary positions for each date. Normally, the published editions
cover intervals of 10 years, 20, 50 years, or 100 years, although there are
exceptions. Most ephemerides have the positions of the Sun and planets
calculated for either Noon or Midnight Universal Time (which is basically
the same as GMT), so you would need to adjust the positions for your
local time if you are born anywhere else in the world than near the
Greenwich Meridian (which is longitude zero.) So for example, if you
were born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, you use Eastern Standard
Time, which is 5 hours earlier than GMT. So a Noon ephemeris would
show the positions at 7 am Philadelphia, while a midnight ephemeris
would show them at 7 pm Philadelphia.)
The Moon, however, travels so fast that most ephemerides list its position
for BOTH Noon and Midnight Universal Time.
Here are some excellent Ephemerides you can purchase. You can
read a bit about most of these at The Astrology Center of America.
You may be able to purchase some of these as Used editions from
websites such as Alibris or Half.com:

QUESTION: How does a Gemini get along with a Cancer?

QUESTION: I've heard that Leo is not supposed to get along with
Scorpio, is that true?
QUESTION: Do me and my significant other stand a chance? He was
born under the sign ........... and my sign is ..............
ANSWER: Pop astrology is very misleading. You can't tell how well two
people will get along by comparing their Sun Signs. I have seen Sun Signs
that are not supposed to get along have happy marriages because the rest
of the charts fit so well. And I have seen Sun Signs that are supposedly
ideal have terrible relationships, because the charts clash so much. What is
more important is one person's Sun to the other person's Moon; one's
Venus to the other's Mars; aspects that affect the 7th house in each chart;

how one person's Mercury is being aspected by planets in the other

chart...in other words, comparing the whole charts. If you are truly serious
about the relationship, you should have your complete chart compared
with the other person's complete chart.

QUESTION: What are astrological aspects?

QUESTION: What is a square (or trine, or conjunction)?
ANSWER: An aspect is an angular distance between two planets, or other
astrological points, that links the two planets together in a special
relationship. The angular relationship can be exact, or within a few
degrees from exact. (If the aspect is not exact, the difference between the
exact angle between the two planets, and the following angles, is called
'orb. The orbs listed next to each aspect are a suggestion for planets in a
natal chart, not mandatory. The Sun and Moon always have larger orbs in
aspects.) There are many different aspects, but the ones that are most often
considered are termed 'Major Aspects'. These show the most pronounced,
most easily discernible influences.

(0 degrees): This is a link, or fusion, of the

energies of the two points. The two bodies often behave as one, and it
is difficult to see the influence of one without the other. 10 degree
orb, 12 degrees with Sun or Moon.

(0 degrees): When the Sun and Moon line up

in a conjunction, and it is near one of the Moon's Nodes, it forms a
special type of conjunction called a Solar Eclipse.

(30 degrees): This shows two points that are

greatly different from each other, but can be called upon to support
each other. 2 degree orb, 3 degrees with Sun or Moon.

(45 degrees): This shows two planets that tend

to irritate or agitate each other. Here is a site that gives simple
descriptions of SemiSquare aspects between different planetary pairs:
www.myastrologycharts.com/semisquare/semisquare.php 5 degree
orb, 7 degrees with Sun or Moon.

(60 degrees): These two planets work well together,

as long as effort is given. 6 degree orb, 8 degrees with Sun or Moon.

(72 degrees): This shows two planets that

are linked together to produce a creative ability or talent. Al H.
Morrison said that this gives an ability to work magic in some way,
literally or figuratively. Here is a site that gives simple descriptions of
Quintile aspects between different planetary pairs:
www.cafeastrology.com/natal/quintile_biquintile.html 4 degree orb, 6
degrees with Sun or Moon.

(90 degrees): These two planets lock horns, act to

block each other, until the person learns how to get them to work
together. 8 degree orb, 10 degrees with Sun or Moon.

(120 degrees): Two planets have an energy that flows

very well together, but it is possible to take it for granted because
things come too easy. 8 degree orb, 10 degrees with Sun or Moon.

(135 degrees): It is similar to the Semisquare. 5 degree orb, 7 degrees with Sun or Moon.

(150 degrees): Two planets that

have virtually nothing in common, so there is a continual need for
adjustment. 3 degree orb, 5 degrees with Sun or Moon.

(180 degrees): Two planets are on opposing

sides, and can either be constantly in battle, or can work as an ideal
partnership. 10 degree orb, 12 degrees with Sun or Moon.

(0 degrees): When the Sun and Moon line up

in an opposition, and it is near one of the Moon's Nodes, it forms a
special type of opposition called a Lunar Eclipse.

(0 degrees North, or 0 degrees South, but in

declination, not by zodiacal sign): Two planets are Parallel when they
have the same declination with respect to the Celestial Equator (or

equal distance from it.) The influence is much like a conjunction. If

you have any of the above aspects, and they are also in parallel, the
aspects are stronger. 1 degree orb is good for a parallel.

(1 planet 0 degrees North, while the other

planet is 0 degrees South, but in declination, not by zodiacal sign):
Two planets are Contra-Parallel when they have the same declination
with respect to the Celestial Equator (or equal distance from it.), but
in opposite directions. The influence is much like an opposition,
although some astrologers view it more like a conjunction. 1 degree
orb is good.

QUESTION:What are the other aspects, and why are they called Minor
Aspects?
QUESTION:How do I know when to pay attention to the Minor Aspects,
or even if I should?
ANSWER:While the Major Aspects, listed in the previous question, are
the most noticeable, the minor aspects still add color to the picture, flesh
out the story. They are only minor in comparison, because each one will
give additional details about the chart you are studying.
So use them if you want to delve deeper into a chart, or want to add some
background information. Use them if you have the time to explore many
different levels about your subject. Dont use them if you are trying to get
a basic, clear image of your subject in as short a time as possible.
And if you do use them, study the Major Aspects first, and then move on
to the others. Otherwise, you will risk muddying up the story and be
unable to truly see the whole because of so many parts.
NOTE: The following section on Minor Aspects is under construction.
Descriptions will be added.

(18 degrees). There is insight

here into ways to go beyond into other worlds. 1 degree orb, 2
degrees if Sun or Moon.

(32 degrees 43 min 38.2 sec) This little used

aspect is 1/11th of the circle, which creates an irrational number (see

the Septile for a description of irrational numbers). This aspect, and

the various multiples of 2/11, 3/11, etc., refer to the learning of, or
becoming aware that one does not live in a vacuum---that there are
times one must go outside of oneself to seek help, or to improve on
something. I have found that the more Undecim multiples one has in
a chart, the more social consciousness a person seems to have. The
Undecim [and its multiples] also seem to bring the aspected planet
quite well into a group situation, to work with the group to help
resolve difficulties. It has a very tight orb, though, of only 1/2 degree
even with Sun or Moon.

(36 degrees). Some unique abilities to offer support

and help to other people, often mental ingenuity, often with some
unique technical insights and abilities to contribute. The person has
some special gifts, but these may be wasted or unappreciated. The
person usually needs to do some self-improvement work to capitalize
on energy of this aspect. 1 degree orb, 2 degrees if Sun or Moon.

(40 degrees). This is also called a Novile. This

aspect shows areas the person needs to recognize they are held in
bondage in some way, and release them. And when you do, it opens
the door to the next octave, the next level in some way. Some say it is
an aspect of gestation and birth, or birth coming out of captivity. I
have also seen it connected with the concept of Dharma. Here is a site
that gives simple descriptions of Nonagen aspects between different
pairs of planets: john-sandbach.blogspot.com/2009/12/novileaspect.html Orb of 1 degree, 2 degrees if Sun or Moon.

(51 degrees 25 min 42.8 sec) When you divide 360

by 7, you get an irrational number....that's a number like PI which
goes on indefinitely. In a chart, it can show an area where one does
not behave in a rational manner, or has irrational urges, obsessive or
compulsive urges. Yet there is a great potential to sense the
mysterious, the hidden , what others may miss, and can indicate
extraordinary creative efforts based upon a deeper understanding.
There is often a feeling of destiny with this aspect, and it is prominent
in many who have influenced the course of history. There is usually
an ability, where these two planets are involved, to see a whole

picture in one's mind, while others can only see parts of it. Suggested
orb of only 1 degree, or two if involving the Sun or Moon. There is a
site listing the meaning of Septiles between all pairs of planets at
www.universalastrologer.com/septile.html

(65 degrees 27 min 16.4 sec) See the

Undecim.

(80 degrees) Like the Nonagen.

(98 degrees 10 min 54.5 sec) See the

Undecim.

(102 degrees 51 minutes 25.7 sec) Divide 360 by

2/7 and you get this aspect. It is much like the Septile, except that
there is more of an urge to exteriorize it...to actively use this in the
world beyond the self. Suggested orb of only 1 degree, or two if
involving the Sun or Moon.
Squine (105 degrees): Charles Jayne studied this aspect, which I have
not found a symbol for. He said it was like a hybrid between a square
and a trine. You've got some of the laziness and ease that comes with
a trine, but at the same time some of the problems of the square.
You've got an incomplete tool that doesn't have quite a sharp enough
edge but it isn't fully automatic, so you have to put some energy into
it, and this is essential to do a good job. I call it the "Diamond in the
rough aspect". 1 degree orb even with Sun or Moon.
(108 degrees) It is creativity
in the public context. Thus, the Tredecile identifies functions of being
that provide the knack of professional artistry. The tredecile has been
called an aspect of creative introversion by Dane Rudhyar. It is an
opposition minus a quintile and, as such, points to the need for
conscious withdrawal in order for originality to become inspired. 1
degree orb, 2 degrees with Sun or Moon.

(130 degrees 05 min 27.3 sec) See the

Undecim.

(144 degrees). Like the Quintile, but

given towards mastery of some creative talent, or functions suitable

of extending them to group creativity. 2 degree orb, 4 degrees with
Sun or Moon.

(154 degrees 51 min 08.6 sec) Divide 360 by 3/7

and you get the third aspect in the Septile series. It too is like the
Septile, except that it usually involves other people who may be
critical to your path, or who are themselves at a critical fork in the
road. Suggested orb of only 1 degree, or two if involving the Sun or
Moon.
(160 degrees) Like the Nonagen.

(163 degrees 38 min 10.9 sec) See the

Undecim. The orb issue is confusing here because it is so close to the
next aspect. Adding 1/2 degree makes this 164 degrees 08 minutes
10.9 seconds, while the Johndro aspect is in orb down to 164 degrees.
Is one of the orbs less, or is a planet in both aspects when it is in that
8 minute overlap?

(165 degrees) Some people also call this the

Quindecile. Where you have this aspect, you have a dogged
determination. You don't know when to quit, won't quit...even if the
proposition is found to be unfeasible, you can't let go, can't stop. It is
an aspect of unrelenting motivation, obsession, and determination,
and can even cause separation. 1 degree orb even with Sun or Moon.

QUESTION: What is a transit?

QUESTION: What does this transit mean?
QUESTION: What is the difference between a transit and a progression?
ANSWER:
A transit is the actual passage of the Sun, Moon, planet, node or minor
planet through the zodiac, and how it relates to the bodies and houses in a
particular chart. Each planet or other point moves through the zodiac at its
own rate of motion, and as it does so it forms special relationships to the
planets and points in the individual chart, as well as focusing its energy on
the house of the chart it moves through.
For example, let us assume that the Sun in a person's chart is 25 degrees

Gemini. When you look at the current positions of the the planets, you see
that Saturn is at 25 Gemini, so you can say that Saturn is transiting
conjunct that person's Sun. If I know that the person's Sun is in the 3rd
house, then I will also know that Saturn is transiting through the 3rd house
of that chart.
Another example: supposing I have my Ascendant (Rising Sign, First
House Cusp) at 27 degrees of Libra, and my Second House starts at 27
degrees of Scorpio, but I have no planets in the first house of my chart. I
look at the current positions of the planets, and see that Jupiter is 12
degrees of Scorpio. Since 12 Jupiter is later than 27 Libra but earlier than
27 Scorpio, I know that Jupiter is currently transiting through my First
House.
A transit is much different than a progression (see the next question for
information on progressions), but it is possible for a transit to be the
activating force bringing a progression into action.

QUESTION: What is a progression?

QUESTION: Are there different kinds of progressions?
ANSWER:While a transit (described above) is based on the actual
movement of the Sun, Moon and other bodies at any given time,

progressions are totally symbolic, and are more of an abstract concept than
transits. There are different types of progressions. These show the
symbolic unfolding of one's life.
The most frequently used progression is known as a Secondary
Progression. This is based on the assumption that "Each day after
birth represents one year of life later on". With this system,
astrologers equate one day after birth to one year of life (the day-fora-year method).
For example, at birth, a person has the Moon at 0 degrees 15 minutes
Aries. Exactly two days after the child was born, the Moon was at 25
degrees 17 minutes Aries. This new position is said to describe the
influence of the Moon on this person at age two. Planets in the sky
when the person was 29 days old symbolize the person's life at 29
years of age.
Another way to progress a chart is by using solar arc directions. With
this method, the chart is progressed by finding the "arc" (distance in
degrees) between the progressed Sun and the natal Sun, and adding
this distance in degrees to the rest of the planets and points. Because
the Sun moves at a rate of almost one degree a day, this method
makes it rather easy to estimate positions of progressed planets and
points (the degrees of progression are roughly equivalent to the age
of the individual).
So for example, at birth the Sun was at 0 Aries 15. At age two the
Sun was at 2 Aries 13. The difference between the two is 1 degree 58
minutes. You add this distance to all planets in a person's chart, and
that will describe the person's life at age two. So if the Moon was at 2
Taurus 00 at birth, the solar arc addition of 1 degree 58 minutes
would be added to the Moon, making it 3 degrees 58 minutes at age
two. And so on with the rest of the planets.
Probably the progression that is most paid attention to is that of the Moon,
since it moves so quickly compared to other planets in the chart. Here are
two sites that may be of assistance:
Progressed Moon through the signs
Progressed Moon aspecting natal planets

QUESTION: What does it mean if a planet is listed as Retrograde?

QUESTION: What does it mean if a planet is stationary?

QUESTION: What happens during a retrograde period?
ANSWER: The R next to a planet is short for Retrograde. A planet is
described as retrograde when it appears to be moving backwards through
the zodiac. Of course, it doesn't actually move backwards, but seems to be
because of relation of the two orbits.
Imagine you are in a train moving at 100 miles per hour, and you catch up
and overtake a train moving the same direction at 90 miles per hour. When
you come along side the train, and look out the window, it will appear,
briefly, not to be moving at all...it appears to be Stationary. Then, as you
move ahead of the train, it will actually appear to be moving
backwards....it appears to be in Retrograde motion. Now instead of trains,
imagine the Earth and the planet in question.
A very general rule is that retrograde planets describe a time when things
seem to happen out of our control. They may seem fated, they may seem
as if they were inevitable. In any event, they bring a series of events over
which we seem to have little or no control. What these events are, and
where, relates to the sign the planet is in, and the house it is transiting
through.
But note the first two letters of the word REtrograde. We often have a lot
of control during retrograde times of things that begin with re-, such as
REsearch, REexamine, REdefine, REtry. And in fact, this period is when
we can best tap our REsources in the area ruled by the specific planet.
Some planets are retrograde much more frequently than others.
Mercury goes into retrograde three or four times a year, believe it or not.
But at least it's retrograde periods are the shortest of any planet, only about
20-28 days each time.
Jupter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto all have a retrograde period
once per year. The average length of each of these is:
Jupiter: 120 days
Saturn: 140 days
Uranus: 150 days
Neptune: 160 days
Pluto: 160 days
Venus is gracious. It has a retrograde period approximately every 18
months, giving us more time to get over each one...and the average length
of her retrogrades is 42 days.

And Mars is almost 2 full years between retrogrades. I think that's very
sporting of the planet, since one can only take so much intense Mars. The
average Mars retrograde lasts about 80 days.

QUESTION:What is Mercury Retrograde?

QUESTION:Why is Mercury Retrograde different than other Retrograde
planets?
QUESTION:Why do bad things seem to happen during Mercury
Retrograde?
QUESTION:Is there anything good about Mercury Retrograde?
QUESTION:It seems like Mercury is always going Retrograde! Why is
that?
ANSWER:The general description of retrograde planets (previous
question) also applies to Mercury Retrograde, but since Mercury
Retrograde gets more press than any other retrograding body, it deserves a
special section of its own.
All other planets retrograde once a year or even less, for months at a time.
Mercury, however, goes retrograde three, sometimes even four, times a
year. While it only stays retrograde for about three-four weeks at a time, it
seems like we are just getting back to normal before we hear that another
Mercury Retrograde is approaching.
To best understand what it means when it is retrograde, you must first
understand what Mercury itself represents. Mercury represents our mental
and communicative life processes. It governs communication in all its
forms, whether spoken word or written, whether paper document or
internet data transmission. It represents the reasoning mind, the analytical
mind, the ability to perceive relationships and connections between things,
and the gathering and sorting of all facts and figures. It oversees trade and
commerce, and it represents short journeys of all kinds.
When Mercury goes retrograde, it is a good time to turn our attentions
towards unfinished business. The energy is right to look inwards to our
inner perceptions, and reconnect with the source of our thoughts. This
introversion can give us new insights that we might never get during the
normal Mercury direct period.
These are good times for completing projects, connecting with old friends,
and settling accounts. It's a great time for most RE words, especially REst

and RElaxation. REcheck your figures, REassess previous plans, REview

what we are doing, and do REsearch for future plans. Alternate ideas
present themselves for consideration, and some of these can be quite
amazing. REconsider things you had taken for granted.
If you have had trouble communicating with someone for awhile, Mercury
Retrograde is an excellent time to REopen communication, or to try a new
method of communicating with them. It's amazing how often you can
discover a missing key to communicating with someone during this time
period of time.
Old friends sometimes reconnect during this time, and old relationships
can be rekindled.
It's OK to have a job interview during this period. If you are needed, this
usually leads to them calling you back for a second interview.
But this is also a time when normal Mercury processes can act up, so it is
good to know what you may expect.
Expect to have to REpeat and/or REdo things. Maybe several times.
Delays are much more frequent now. If you travel by plane, check for
delays in flights - car rentals - lost luggage and related items - sudden
cancellation / rescheduling of the trip. And in fact, all kinds of travel
may be delayed. Appointments may be written down wrong, or not
written down when they should have been. Your car might have
problems show up now that delay your trip, as well.
In fact, the potential for car trouble, or any type of machine or
electronics trouble, is greater at this time. Expect problems from your
computer, your dial-up system, satellite problems, hard and software
problems - not a good time to purchase computer products. Or any
type of machine or electronic products.
Purchases for anything other than the most routine items often end up
being returned. Sometimes they are defective, sometimes broken, or
sometimes you realize later you really didn't want them anyway.
Communications of all kinds can go awry. Letters lost before they get
mailed, or misrouted and not getting to the destination on time, if at
all. Verbal and written communications can be misunderstood very
easily.
Documents written now may have errors in logic, or not say what you
thought you were trying to say. Or typos may get by you that will
show up later. Contracts are best avoided now, for this reason, but if

you must sign a contract, check it over again and again, and show it
to someone else to re-check it a few times as well. Sometimes, the
other party in the contract may actually be trying to pull a deception,
so be extra cautious at this time, not only for what the contract says,
but what it doesn't say.
Medical diagnosis is sometimes way off at this time, so if you must
have a diagnosis, get a second opinion now. Or, if possible, hold off
until Mercury goes direct.
Jobs started during Mercury Retrograde rarely last.
If you play a trick on someone, it will almost invariably backfire on
you.
If you meet a 'special someone' during Mercury Retrogarde, it quite
often does not last.

QUESTION: What exactly is a Saturn Return?

ANSWER: Saturn has an orbit of almost 30 years, so between 29-30, and
again around age 59-60, Saturn returns to where it was at their birth. This
is a major one of life's passages, intimately connected with becoming
more mature. Saturn is the symbol of structure, form, and therefore
limitation and responsibility. It symbolically defines us personally and
socially. It is time to take responsibility for your life and realize you can
no longer blame others or circumstances for things that don't go right. It is
a time of major self-examination.....asking yourself "why did I listen to
this persons advice?", "why didn't I listen?" The first Saturn Return is a
time of passage from youth to adulthood, although society calls us adults
at a much younger age. The second Saturn Return is a time to enter
sagehood, although not everyone reaps wisdom from age.

QUESTION:What is Chiron, and where can I find out more about it?
QUESTION:What are the Centaurs?
QUESTION:What's this about putting asteroids in my chart?
QUESTION:What are Ceres, Pallas, Juno and Vesta, and do I need them?
ANSWER:Some astrologers began to put the "Big Four" asteroids (Ceres,
Pallas, Juno and Vesta) in charts in 1974, and many now use them for
supplementary information. Asteroids are also called Minor Planets.
Chiron, discovered in 1977, is a unique body that spends most of its orbit
between Saturn and Uranus, and is being used by an increasing number of
astrologers, even many who do not use any asteroids. And in the 1990's,
several new bodies have been discovered and placed in a totally new
classification, Centaurs. Astrologers are only just beginning to explore
these, so not a lot is known yet.
Here are some sites to learn more about each of these:
Chiron and Friends, the site of Chiron pioneer Zane B Stein (a
member of our tribe), will give you a lot of good information on
Chiron, and on the Centaurean bodies: chiron.htm
Juan Revila has done a lot of work on Chiron and the Centaurs. He
even offers free software if you would like to experiment with these
bodies in your chart: www.expreso.co.cr/centaurs/
Zane has a site exploring some of the asteroids: www.geocities.com/

QUESTION: What is this planet Xena I keep hearing about?
ANSWER: Astronomers have, within the past few years, discovered
several large bodies past Pluto, but most of them are too small to be called
planets. One of them, however, is very large, and many astronomers think
it should be called the 10th planet. It is not officially named yet, but
astronomers have jokingly called it Xena. Here is some information on

QUESTION: Are the signs now wrong because the stars have moved?
QUESTION: What is the Precession of the Equinoxes?
QUESTION: What is the difference between Tropical and Sidereal
Astrology?
QUESTION: When is the Age of Aquarius? And what is it?
ANSWER: As Earth spins on its axis, its axis wobbles (precesses) very
slowly over a period of about 26,000 years. As this occurs, the pole of the
Earth gradually moves around, and this movement is called the
precessional arc.
Because Earth's axis is tilted at about 23 in its orbit around the sun,
Earth's equatorial plane is tilted with respect to the ecliptic plane, the plane
created by Earth's orbit around the Sun. These two intersecting planes
create an intersecting line called the vernal axis. One point of this axis is
where the Sun is on the first day of Spring, where days and nights are
equal, and this is called the Vernal Equinox. The other end of the axis is
also a point of equal days and nights, and (since it is where the Sun is at
the beginning of Autumn) is termed the Autumnal Equinox.
As Earth's pole precesses, Earth's equatorial plane wobbles in the plane of
the ecliptic. This causes the equinox points to move around the ecliptic at
a rate of about 1 every 72 years, making one complete cycle in Earth's
precessional Great Year, approximately 25,920 years. The precessional
movement of the vernal points is called the "precession of the equinoxes."

The vernal point (the Spring Equinox point) is also the starting point of the
Tropical zodiac, defined as 0 Aries. Because the vernal point moves in
the ecliptic, the entire set of signs comprising the Tropical zodiac also
moves with respect to the stars (and the Sidereal zodiac), which remain
fixed in their location in the heavens.
The Sidereal zodiac is a set of signs that are aligned with their
corresponding constellations. In the Sidereal zodiac, the Sun enters the
Aries when it reaches the beginning of the constellation Aries. Unlike the
Tropical zodiac, the Sidereal signs are based on fixed constellations.
The Tropical zodiac aligned with the fixed Sidereal Zodiac around 200
A.D. At that time, the first day of Spring coincided with the Sun entering
the constellation Aries. However, due to the precession of the equinoxes,
the two zodiacs have drifted apart. And here is the cause of arguments
among the two types of astrologers....and also between astrologers and
astronomers.
The exact location of the Sidereal cusps in the ecliptic is a topic of debate
amongst scholars. The exact distance in arc degrees between 0 Tropical
Aries and 0 Sidereal Aries is therefore also a topic of debate. This
distance is called the "ayanamsa" (a Hindu word), and there are
disagreements about exactly how large this ayanamsa is, as well as how to
calculate it. (Thus, there are several different ayanamsas used today. The
most common is the Fagan-Bradley Ayanamsa. It is reckoned to the star
Spica in sidereal Virgo. The Fagan-Bradley Ayanamsa is 24 49' 12" @
2006 A.D. This means that on Jan 1, 2006, 00:00:00: GMT, the Tropical
zodiac has drifted backward from the fixed Sidereal zodiac by 24 49' 12"
based upon the Fagan-Bradley Ayanamsa. This places the vernal point (0
tropical Aries) at 5 10' 48" in sidereal Pisces. But some authorities use a
different ayanamsa all together.)
So using the above ayanamsa, the Vernal point is now close to 5 of
Sidereal Pisces, showing we are still in the Age of Pisces. When it first
shifted from Aries to Pisces, we entered what many called the Age of
Pisces. It is slowly moving towards the constellation of Aquarius, and
when it reaches that point, we will enter the Age of Aquarius. When will
this occur? It depends upon the ayanamsa that is used. Using the above
Fagan-Bradley version, we have over 370 years yet before the Aquarian
age actually begins.
Some astrologers only use the Tropical Zodiac. They see the zodical signs

as deriving their nature from the Sun/Earth relationship, and believe the
first day of Spring is always the first day of the sign Aries. They know that
the constellations are no longer lined up with the signs, and believe that
the coinciding of the signs with the constellations at one time was to bring
the nature of the signs to humanity's conscious awareness. They do not use
the constellations, although some Tropical Astrologers DO add the
positions of some of the stars in their charts for added information. Most
Tropical Astrologers feel that Sidereal Astrology is not valid because the
actual signs come from the Sun/Earth relationship.
Some astrologers only use the Sidereal Zodiac. They see the zodiac signs
as deriing their nature from the stars, or the sections of the sky where the
constellations are located, and believe the first day of Aries is always
when the Sun enters the constellation Aries. They do use the Vernal
Equinox point, but as a sensitive point in the chart, not as the start of a
zodiac sign. Most Sidereal Astrologers feel that Tropical Astrology is not
valid because the astrologers are no longer using the actual constellations.
And then there are some astrologers who utilize both zodiacs. They
believe that each one refers to a different realm of consciousness, or a
different dimension of human experience, and that the relationship of the
Tropical Zodiac to the Sidereal Zodiac reveals much about the unfolding
of human history, and about the evolutionary unfoldment of human
consciousness.
