SO LETS RECAP WHAT WE JUST LEARNED
The Dative Case = The Indirect Object = to or for whom and action is done
Notice that we now have three different ae endings. You might think that this would cause us untold problems, but that is
not really the case. You only have to watch for the indirect object (and therefore, the dative case) when the following is
true in a clause. (Notice the good news here: if a word ends in o or is it can only be dative!)
1. To have an indirect object you must have a direct object, and therefore you must have an action verb.
2. The verb must express some form of giving, telling or showing. This means that verbs like send, offer
and point out could take an IO.)
3. The classic IO position is between the verb and the direct object.
4. The to or for before may be understood and not explicit: I give Abe money = I give money to Abe.
Given the guidelines above, dissect the following sentence:
The good queen will give the good farmer the new land.
subject? __________________________ case? ____________________________
DO?
__________________________ case? ____________________________
IO?
__________________________ case? ____________________________
The IO here is in the classic folded up position. Note that to is understood before the IO. If we unfolded the IO we would
have to state the word to and take the IO out of the classic position:
The good queen will give the new land to the good farmer.
In English we would certainly call to the good farmer a prepositional phrase, but in Latin good farmer is still translated
in the dative and is still considered the IO. Remember, a prepositional phrase generally answers where, when, and
how. The IO answers to or for whom
