L12 The Perfect Tense

Up until recently, the only tenses we knew in Latin were the present and future tenses (except for erat and erant).
Now we unveil to you the use of the third principal part of Latin verbs and now present to you the perfect tense.
Be not confused the perfect tense is just the past tense. How exciting this is! Weeeeeeeeee!
Just as we had three ways to express the present tense (I carry, I am carrying and I do carry), these three
translations work in the perfect tense:
I carried

\
\
I did carry
----- >
portavi (cf. pg. 96)
/
I have carried /
In the above examples, what are the helping verbs? _____________________, the main verb? _______________
Notice that the perfect tense does NOT translate as I was carrying!!!
So here is the recipe for the perfect tense:

take the 3rd principal part of the verb

knock off the i

add the appropriate perfect ending:

singular

plural

1st

-i

-imus

2nd

-isti

-istis

-it

-erunt*
