Isover Technical Insulation

Innovation and technical leadership have ensured Saint-Gobain
Isover has remained at the forefront of the Technical Insulation
market worldwide for more than 70 years.
The main objective of HVAC installations is to
provide comfort (thermal, acoustic and ventilation
comfort) for occupants of commercial dwellings,
working spaces and residential buildings.

erm

Th

Comfort, in this sense comprises of temperature

control, satisfactory indoor air quality and
adequate noise levels. This can be particularly
important in the design of medium to large
commercial and office buildings where these
parameters have to be carefully controlled.

Thermal performance
Effective thermal insulation is becoming increasingly important for economic and
environmental reasons, as well as personnel protection.
The thermal performance of Isover Technical Insulation solutions will greatly increase
the amount of energy saved, providing substantial measurable cost savings. Whilst
helping to prevent burns where operators may come into contact with surfaces
exceeding 50C.

Acoustic performance
Noise levels emanating from HVAC (pipework, ductwork and air handling equipment)
and other services can be significantly reduced with the use of Isover Technical
Insulation solutions. The degree of acoustic performance will depend upon the
application, the thickness of insulation used and the type of finish used to over-clad
the insulation.

Fire performance
How materials behave in a fire, from ignition to flashover, needs to be assessed at
design stage for all technical constructions. The majority of our Technical range of
insulation achieves an A1 Euroclass rating when classified in accordance with
BS EN 13501.

Our range of HVAC products will work to provide the most efficient insulation
solutions for pipework and ductwork, ensuring the building environment is
thermally protected, has minimal noise disruption from equipment noise and
is fire safe. Just imagine what they can do for you.

Why insulate pipe and ductwork?

Insulation is applied for various reasons
including heat conservation, temperature
control, condensation and noise. Within HVAC
applications, some thermal losses can occur
due to the temperature of the air in the duct
not being the same as that of the surrounding
ambient air. Heat transfer between operating
and ambient conditions can represent a loss of
efficiency and increase energy costs.

efficiency in the use of energy both in industrial,

residential and commercial activities. The use
of technical insulation correctly selected and
installed can provide energy savings, especially
in air conditioning and heating, where
energy is consumed to obtain the required
comfort conditions.

Thermal insulation solutions are the most

significant factor in heat conservation
and temperature control in ductwork and can
greatly affect the amount of energy saved,
providing substantial measurable cost savings.

The ECA Scheme covers five categories of

pipework insulation:

The thermal effectiveness of ductwork relies on

the correct thickness of insulation for keeping
the air cool or warm within the ductwork system.
Therefore thermal insulation in ductwork is an
important design criteria.

Energy Efficiency
Growing awareness of climate change, the
increase of pollution in the urban areas and
energy-waste issues have encouraged the
implementation of political measures trying
to reduce consumption and improve energy

Building Regulations and Standards

The Domestic Heating Compliance Guide & The
Non-Domestic Heating, Cooling and Ventilation
Compliance Guide

For Isove

These Tier 2 documents effectively act as Annexes to the Approved Documents and directly specify
the minimum performance requirements for pipework and ductwork insulation. The TIMSA Guide is
specifically referenced in both Compliance Guides, and has been reviewed directly by the Government
on that basis.

.isover.co
.uk

In January 2009 section BS 5422 of the British Standards was updated. The most significant change
to the document being the adoption of thickness tables produced by TIMSA (Thermal Insulation
Manufacturers and Suppliers Association) as part of their Guidance for achieving Compliance with
Part L of the Building Regulations, with some expansions. The tables offer specific information on
aspects of compliance and, in particular, indicative
thicknesses for insulation being applied at
specified thermal conductivities.

Scotland
BS 5422:2009 also applies in Scotland from
October 2010. From 2012, Editions of the
Technical Handbooks (Domestic & Non
Domestic, Sections 6, Energy) produced by the
Scottish Building Standards, refer to BS 5422.
Isover thickness tables in relation to British
Standards BS 5422 for pipe and ductwork can be
found online at www.isover.co.uk. All calculations
are done according with the formulae given in
BS EN ISO 12241: 2008, 'Thermal insulation for
building equipment and industrial installations'.

Condensation
Ductwork and pipework can represent a
condensation risk caused by localised cooling
of air and a rise in relative humidity.
If inadequate thicknesses of insulation are
applied to the ductwork, water can pool causing
not only equipment damage but poor equipment
performance, and a potential corrosion risk.
BS 5422 defines a minimum thickness for
the thermal insulation for pipes and ducts to
minimize the danger of condensation.

Soluble ion content under

ASTM C 871 and EN 13468
Immediately following manufacture, the
leachable ion content of Saint-Gobain Isover glass
mineral wool pipe insulation falls within the
Acceptable Analysis area of the Acceptability
of Insulation graph given in ASTM C795, which
relates to ASTM C 871.
Saint-Gobain Isover Pipe Section achieves the
highest standard required of the tests ASTM
C 871 and EN 13468.
The pH value of a product is measured in
aqueous solution. The pH value for glass mineral
wool is generally close to pH neutral or slightly
alkaline when in aqueous solution.

Saint-Gobain Isover insulation products for metal

ductwork and glass wool ductboards have an
aluminium foil outer facing that acts as a vapour
barrier to prevent condensation occurring inside
the mineral wool itself.

Building Regulations and Standards

Acoustic
Noise (considered unwanted sound) was
declared an environmental pollutant at
the 1972 International Conference for the
Environment, in Stockholm. Noise has a wide
range of consequences for humans, from general
disturbance, reducing personal comfort (such as
lack of privacy or difficulty in talking) and even
leading to serious health problems such as
heart failure, hearing difficulties, stress etc. So
it is important to consider sound reduction in
HVAC design.
Designers should never forget that the primary
function of air conditioning installations is to
improve user comfort.
Metal ducts by themselves have virtually
no acoustic absorption and sound is simply
transmitted down the length of the duct, so
the sound is of the same amplitude at the
beginning of the service duct as at the end.
Sometimes noise attenuators can be used,
however they also cause pressure losses and
therefore energy losses.
Insulation can also used to reduce the decibel level
to an acceptable standard for the human ear. This
can be in the form of an insulant such as:
Isover CLIMCOVER Roll or Slab fixed on the
outside of the duct.
A pre-insulated ductwork system such as the
Isover CLIMAVER range.

Fire Protection
Euroclass harmonisation
Commonly accepted in England, Scotland and
Wales, Euroclass is a harmonised European
classification system (A1, A2, B, C, D, E and F) for
products, measuring their reaction to fire. A1
corresponds to the safest situation, E the most
dangerous and F would not be classified.

to the quantity of smoke production (s1 being the

lowest production of smoke up to s3, which means
high production of smoke) and the possible fall of
flaming droplets d (d0 none, up to d3).

Class 0 compliance
Class 0 compliance refers to the surface properties
of a product, specifically Surface Spread of Flame
or non-combustibility of the surface. BS 476: Parts
6 and 7 also need to be satisfied.
All Isover HVAC products are Euroclass A/B rated
and Class 0 compliant. Please see individual
product pages for further guidance.

Smoke and toxicity

Carbon Monoxide is one of the primary toxic
fumes released in all fires and the majority
of all casualties whether fatalities or not,
become incapacitated due to the inhalation
of this toxic fume.
If a foil-faced product is directly exposed to a
flame, the foil will initially protect the underlying
insulant. However, when a fire reaches 550-700C
band, typically after 30 minutes, the aluminium
foils normally melts away from the insulant below.
Once this has occurred the insulant will be directly
affected by the flame and some insulants can
potentially give off toxic gasses. This is not the
case for glass mineral wool.
Glass mineral wool passes the most stringent
IMO Resolution MSC 61 (67); Annex 1, Part 2 test
for smoke and toxicity, which is used to regulate
the release not only of carbon monoxide but also
other toxins such as hydrogen cyanide, sulphur
dioxide and nitrous fumes.
In most fires, it is the inhalation of toxic fumes
through smoke that will kill occupants, not the fire
itself, so it is important to select the right insulant.

Reaction to fire
Under reaction to fire, one of the most
important issues is the potential for flashover.
This is the spontaneous ignition of hot smoke,
gases and fuel which can lead to a fire
spreading uncontrollably.
Other hazards found in real life fires and for risk
assessment, are classified by s and d. These relate

Environmental commitment
During every stage of development, from product
innovation to the sourcing of raw materials, through
manufacture, distribution and installation, we constantly
achieve improvements in our environmental sustainability.
At Isover we take our environmental
responsibility seriously. The very nature of
our business is to develop insulation solutions
to protect both your built environment and
the natural environment.
That is why we have developed our 3 point plan
for environmental sustainability. This dynamic
plan focuses our efforts on continuously
improving the way in which our products and
processes impact the natural environment and
seeks to ensure that Isover and our products,
when in-situ, use:
Less Materials
Less Energy
Less Emissions

We are proud of the successes we have already

achieved, such as being the only glass mineral
wool manufacturer to achieve 86% recycled
content (the absolute limit) and the 20%
reduction we have made in factory energy
consumption, but we are committed to
achieving far more.

Ozone Depletion Potential and Global

Warming Potential
Glass mineral wools do not contain ozonedepleting or global warming substances, nor
are these used in their manufacture.
Isover products have a Zero Ozone Depletion
Potential (ODP) and a Global Warming Potential
(GWP) of less than 5.
Isovers Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
statement is also available upon request or
found at www.isover.co.uk.

BREEAM Framework
There is a move towards all buildings being
environmentally rated. Their whole design from
the constituent elements is now being chosen
based on sustainability credentials. The most
common rating method today is under BREEAM.
British Research Establishment Environmental
Assessment (BREEAM) is An environmental
performance standard against which new, nondomestic buildings in the UK can be assessed,
rated and certified.
BREEAM: Metal ducts themselves cannot
be credited under BREEAM but the insulants
used on them such as duct wraps and duct slabs
and pre-insulated ductwork can. Insulation can
correspond to a BRE Global Green Guide online
generic specification for Health, Education,
Commercial, Industrial, Retail & Domestic
building types and gain credits.
Two credits are available in Section Mat 04 Insulation within the BREEAM document. To
achieve the first credit for Embodied Energy, an
Insulation Index of equal to or greater than 2
must be achieved.
The second credit for Responsible Sourcing can
be claimed if the insulation product has greater
than 50% recycled content and an EMS 14001
Certificate for the Key Process they can be classed
as recycled materials for the purposes of Table
11-2 Mat 03 and as such are awarded Tier Level 6.
Therefore, when using Isovers glass mineral
wool HVAC range both available credits can be
claimed due to our 86% recycled content and
availability of EMS 14001 certificates for the
Key Process.

Environmental Management System

All Saint Gobain Isover mineral wool products are

Isover fire
protection
range
Isover ULTIMATETM Protect
Isover ULTIMATE Protect is a groundbreaking new generation mineral wool insulation that takes
HVAC fire protection to a new level. Isover ULTIMATE uses breakthrough technology that combines
the performance and handling benefits of glasswool with the outstanding fire resistance of
stonewool. Isover ULTIMATE Protect products offer the perfect solution for fire protection of all HVAC
pipes, ducts and equipment.

Effective fire protection

Providing excellent material stability, thermal resistance and acoustics at high temperatures, the
A1 fire- rated products offer 120 minutes fire protection for vertical and horizontal ducts, improving
safety and comfort for building occupants.

Optimal Acoustic Performance

As a sound wave penetrates the innovative material of Isover ULTIMATE Protect, its acoustic energy
is drastically reduced by the friction in the fibre structure.
Isover ULTIMATE Protect achieves up to 50% better sound absorption compared with traditional
stone wool solutions.

Simple installation
65% lighter than conventional stone wool, flexible Isover ULTIMATE Protect products are easy to
handle, cut and shape around even the most intricate ducts, especially in difficult to access areas making installation faster and more cost effective.

A complete range of HVAC solutions

Isover pre-insulated
ductwork system
This innovative system offers excellent thermal and
acoustic performance in a fire safe system and is a
more economical and efficient all in one alternative to
conventional sheet metal and insulation ductwork.

Isover CLIMAVER ductwork system

Manufactured from up to 80% recycled content these high
density glass mineral wool boards are faced on both sides. With reinforced aluminium foil facing on
the outside offering an inherent vapour barrier, air tightness, very low leakage rates and pressure
drops; and on the other side, a foil faced or glass tissue facing for superior attenuation.

Energy saving
The energy efficiency of a ductwork system
depends on the thermal performance of the
duct wall as well as the air leakage rate. The
CLIMAVER system combines good thermal
insulation with low air leakage and compares
favourably with traditional metal ductwork
and insulation systems.

Acoustic Performance
Isover CLIMAVER boards offer inherent
acoustic performance unlike foam plastic
ducts. Isover CLIMAVER Neto and Isover
CLIMAVERAPTA offer superior acoustic
performance due to a black glass facing on one
side. This makes Isover CLIMAVER systems
suitable for all applications such as music
rooms, theatres and libraries.

Isover CLIMAVER at the Commonwealth Pool Edinburgh

Isover CLIMAVER offers inherent
acoustic performance unlike foam plastic
ducts, whilst Isover CLIMAVER Neto
offers a superior attenuation than that
of sheet metal which helps to reduce
noise transmission and can negate need
for attenuators.

Easy to install
Up to 4.5 times lighter than sheet metal
solutions Isover CLIMAVER systems can
be fabricated on or off-site making it highly
adaptable to onsite changes and with
precision-cut perfect joints ducts can
be fabricated and installed quickly with
minimal wastage.
