New DSAM Carrier to Noise

Tim Miller

DSAM Carrier to noise Measurements

Out of band method
Video carrier is measured at 280 kHz resolution
noise measurement is usually made in the guard band at 30khz resolution
(lower side)
Bandwidth corrections are made for 4 MHz

In band method
Measurements are made on the Video carrier and (quiet lines) at 280 KHz
resolution.
Finds a quiet line after the vertical interval is detected at 2.5 MHz above the
video carrier ( typical)
Establishes timing for the measurement.
Several measurements are made on (quiet lines) on odd or even fields.
Bandwidth correction are made for 4 MHz

Out of band Carrier to Noise Measurement (NCTA)

Out of Band Carrier to noise
measurement is done by
measuring the video carrier at
280 KHz Resolution.
Then measuring the guard band
on the lower side at 1.14 below
the video. This is done at 30 KHz.
Then Calculation is done for 4
MHz bandwidth.

Noise

Why two different measurements for carrier to noise?

Dual audio channels
could make the
appearance of higher
noise floor in the guard
band and causing the
Carrier to Noise
measurement to be
inaccurate when
making a out of band
measurement.
A marginal Video
modulator with a wider
vestigial side band
could also give
inaccurate
measurements.

QAM Sensitivity Configuration Setting

41

Provides a new High and Normal

sensitivity setting which shows errors that
can occur on less capable customer
premise equipment (CPE)

Helps technicians track CPE reported

MER/BER issues in the network.

Normal setting allows DSAM to perform

as it has up to now.

High sensitivity setting turns off various

digital processing technologies that
correct various impairments found on the
network.

Configuration setting is global across all

measurement modes that display MER
and/or BER including DOCSIS mode.

AGC Stress Indicator

Provides notification of AGC problems on digital
channels revealing that there are rapidly varying AGC
levels which can
Indicates CPE problems such as tiling, blocking,
freezing, slow cable modem throughput and/or packet
loss. Viewable in the Digital Level mode,
Constellation Mode and DOCSIS Mode.
If AGC Stress occurs during an autotest, the indicator
will be present in the Overall results section.

Intermodulation Limit (dB Delta)

Compares carrier level values from the highest to the
lowest, analog and digital, to determine maximum
differential in the network.
Provides an early indication of potential
intermodulation distortion caused by largely different
carrier levels overdriving a CPEs tuner.
May result in tiling, blocking or packet loss to the
CPE. Root causes may be excessive tilt and/or cable
loss or excessive power on a given channel. This
calculation is integrated into the Video Autotest and
Home Certification results display.

NCTA

dB Delta Limit Intermodulation

a) Tilt in the network

b) Max Power difference between

analog and digital channels
c) Power difference between analog
and digital channels

43

Practice is to have no tilt or some positive to compensate for the cable loss from the tap to the
homes (a. above)
Above shows about 15 dB of negative tilt due to coaxial cable of having more loss with higher
frequency.
Digital signal recommended to be 5~6 dB down for 256-QAM and 9~10 dB down for 64-QAM
compared to analog (b. above)
Maximum power difference between analog and digital channels (c. above)
dB delta issue originates from this large power difference causing intermodulation in the tuner of
the receiver, which will cause the degradation on MER and/or BER. Excessive total power is
another contributor to overdriving the receiver.

Is in band available on my meter

The HW to support in band has only been shipping for
a few months. All new meters support both
