DOCSIS Testing
IP without Ping:
Uses RTP packets instead of Internet Control
Message Protocol (ICMP) messages (Ping
messages)
CMTS wont discard test messages returning
incorrect test results
DOCSIS data testing for:
Throughput
Packet Loss
**Ping test still uses Ping messages**

In band method
Measurements are made on the Video carrier and (quiet lines) at 280 KHz
resolution.
Finds a quiet line after the vertical interval is detected at 2.5 MHz above the
video carrier ( typical)
Establishes timing for the measurement.
Several measurements are made on (quiet lines) on odd or even fields.
Bandwidth correction are made for 4 MHz
Must have tuner board 6

DQI Applications:
1. High Definition Video Intermittently Impacted
Overview
BER was not catching
errors
DQI instantly captured
issues
98% of the
demodulated stream
was sampled

Helped isolate the issue to

DQI Applications:
2. Digital Video Tiling, Phone and HSD Disruptions
Overview
QAM256 digital channels
Intermittent Issues causing Tiling,
Phone and HSD disruptions on
digital video channels
Issues could not be seen with
traditional QAM analyzers
Issue was not seen by BER
measurements
Occasional MPEG Synch Loss
verified the problem
DQI easily displayed the
sporadic nature of the issue
Issue was tracked to an
Automatic Gain Control (AGC)
Circuit in an amplifier with a
capacitor not charging
correctly. DQI shows a
charging pattern.

Practice is to have no tilt or some positive to compensate for the cable loss from the tap to the
homes (a. above)
Above shows about 15 dB of negative tilt due to coaxial cable of having more loss with higher
frequency.
Digital signal recommended to be 5~6 dB down for 256-QAM and 9~10 dB down for 64-QAM
compared to analog (b. above)
Maximum power difference between analog and digital channels (c. above)
dB delta issue originates from this large power difference causing intermodulation in the tuner of
the receiver, which will cause the degradation on MER and/or BER. Excessive total power is
another contributor to overdriving the receiver.

In-Band C/N
WiFi Site Survey - Beta
Minimum Hold trace for Spectrum and Field View
Add Location Settings as an option in Home Cert
Over-Range Indicator in Spectrum
Better screen visibility for DQI and Level
Separate TPP IP addresses for each network interface
TPP servers can now be referred to by hostname in the
configuration screen
SmartScan Highlights
Ability to see the network frequency response in an
easy to read view
A full scan view without the confusion of mixed channels
or tilt

58
In Band C/N
Why in band vs. out of band?
In band is useful if you do not have a guard band
between channels
Is in band better?
No, the specs are the same for both in band and out of
band
