PROPOSED SEMINAR-WORKSHOP ON TEACHING HIGHER

ORDER THINKING SKILLS

College instructors need to acquire strategies in facilitating development of

higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) and problem-solving/process skills and to know
when a student has developed these skills. They need to acquire skills in developing
assessment tasks that could accurately measure the students conceptual understanding in
their subjects and measure their ability to analyze and solve problems as a result of their
understanding. Moreover, they must also know how to select the most important skills
and processes to assess and to ensure that the most appropriate form of assessment is
utilized. It is in this context that the seminar-workshop is hereby proposed.
This seminar-workshop is especially intended for the faculty members of the
College of Arts and Sciences, Bais Campus I. Sessions on the significance of inculcating
higher order thinking skills (HOTS) in all phases of the different curricula and the various
micro skills associated with HOTS vis--vis the phases and processes of learning. These
presentations will be used as launching points in challenging the faculty-participants to
design their respective instructional methodologies. Problems encountered on effective
HOTS instructional processes will also be explored and collectively addressed.
Objectives
At the end of the seminar-workshop, the faculty members should be able to:
1. Discuss the nature of higher order thinking skills and their vital role in
building self-directed learners,
2. Explain thoroughly the different phases and processes of learning, and
3. Given the phases and processes of learning and the problems identified with
the present generation of learners, identify the appropriate teaching strategies
to inculcate critical HOTS that could be useful.
