INTRODUCTION

The wise step taken by the College

to go for National Assessment and
Accreditation remains as a milestone in the glorious history of our unique institution.
This endeavor, which takes us back to the amazing birth and growth of this extra
ordinary institution, provides us with a clear insight into our onward march towards
the horizon of learning and indomitable spirit of knowledge.
India has a proud legacy of conducting democracy successfully in these fifty
nine years of independence. One of the prerequisites of the success of democracy is
the educated and enlightened public. It is to this end either the Government of India
or the State Government have tempered
their educational policies.
Compulsory
elementary education, provision of secondary education to the most possible and the
introduction of modern approaches in higher education are some of the efforts made in
this direction. In a country like India it is not possible for the Government to provide
education on a large scale to meet the needs of the multitudes. Hence private
organizations with enthusiasm and dedication have come forward voluntarily and
established a good number of academic institutions in urban areas. However rural
areas have been neglected without any progress and exposure.
In these conditions, thirty six years ago, a small lamp of knowledge was lit in
Nagaram, a small village of hardly a thousand thatched houses. Nagaram is on the
Repalle Bapatla road, 15 kms. West of Repalle in Guntur Dist, a district of Andhra
Pradesh well-known for rich social, economic, religious, literary and historical traditions.
This village was originally in Repalle taluk and subsequently it was made the headquarters of the Pallapatla taluk on reorganization of taluks. And now it is the Mandal
head-quarters.
Though Nagaram is a small village with less than 2000 population, it has a
locational advantage in that, that it has a number of villages all around within a radius
of 4 or 5 miles. After independence, these villages fall within one of the most backward
areas educationally, socially and economically in the district. But in Satavahanas
period, a village namely Bhattiprolu of this region flourished as a local center of
Buddhism and historical monuments available here confirmed it also. Chandolu of
this region, nearer to Nagaram became the capital of Velanati cholas, a politically
powerful kingdom of coastal Andhra in medieval times. During British reign,
Nizampatnam, a harbour near Nagaram stood as a remarkable trade point. Many
renowned freedoms fighters like Sri Duggirala Gopala Krishnaiah and Late Sri Mantena
Venkata Raju, former member of our managing committee etc., of this region played an
active role in freedom struggle.
Unfortunately this area remained as a forgotten
corner of Repalle Taluk in free India, backward in all respects notably in education. Most
of the people here were illiterates as they were farmers. They were deprived of
providing higher education to their children. There were 20 high schools in this taluk
but not even a single college in late sixties. Every year about 500 boys used to go to
towns like Tenali, Guntur and Machilipatnam for collegiate education.
It is difficult to say why some ideas see the light of the day and are fulfilled,
while many others are not born or forgotten. One such was the idea that a seat of
higher education would be started in Repalle taluk. This came to a group of
enlightened, patriotic and philanthropic gentlemen who soon banded themselves into
Repalle Taluk Educational Improvement Society. Dr.N.V.Krishna Rao was one of them.
An opportunity came to these determined men when they received a call from Late Sri
Velagapudi Ramakrishna to come to Madras to discuss the feasibility of starting a
college at Nagaram. Late Sri Velagapudi Ramakrishna belongs to Bellamvaripalem only
two miles from Nagaram.
Though he rose to eminence
as an administrator,
entrepreneur and industrialist, he never forgot the area to which he belonged. He was
always mindful of the industrial development of this area and subsidiary sources of
income and employment for the rural youth. He thus started a sugar factory at
Nagaram, but soon he realized that its turnout was far below its capacity, and it was
therefore shifted to Chagallu in West Godavari District. On his sick bed he gave
assurance to Dr. N.V.Krishna Rao that he was prepared to give the entire site of the

sugar factory and the buildings there on as a gift provided the people of this taluk could
build up an educational institution with a distinctive character and standards for the
benefit of the people of his birth place. Death had claimed him soon.
Smt. Rajeswary Ramakrishnan, the proud daughter of Late Sri V. Ramakrishna
and his son, Sri V.L. Dutt proved worthy of their illustrious father and set about
translating his vision into reality. After their fathers death, they gifted lands
measuring 28.74 acres and buildings thereon to the college. With their munificence
the college was started on August 21, 1969. In the memory of the great man and
his ideals, it was named Sri Velagapudi Ramakrishna Memorial College. Thus an
ideal institution with the loftiest objective of dispelling darkness from society and to
prevent any further erosion of values and virtues from all walks of life came into
existence. The impulse behind it is the great principle that every human being has
an inalienable right to develop the full faculties of his personality through education.
Nagaram College was a sacred trust and a magnificent endowment given by
Sri V.Ramakrishna and his family. It rose like phoenix of the legends from the ruins of
sugar factory. Since its inception, it shares the grand vision of the founders to bring
education and knowledge to the door step of our poor and neglected in the surrounding
villages.
The Repalle Taluk Educational Improvement Society took up the responsibility
of conducting this prestigious educational
institution with the ideal of providing
education at several areas of knowledge to rural youth. The most outstanding
objectives that emerged in the by-laws of the society are as follows:
i)
To establish and maintain a college or colleges initially at Nagaram and there
after at any other place or places with in the limits of Repalle Taluk providing courses
of study in Arts, Science and Technology in conformity with the rules and regulations of
Andhra University or any other University to which it shall be affiliated.
ii)
To start at Nagaram a college in memory and in the name of Late Sri Velagapudi
Ramakrishna and for that purpose to acquire by sale, endowment, or otherwise all
those pieces of land and the construction thereon at Nagaram in Repalle Taluk
belonging to the Jeypore Sugar Co., Ltd.
iii)
To act as a trust board to accept endowments, bequests, donations,
subscriptions, grants from institutions both private and public, corporate bodies, local
bodies and Government and other transfers of property made to the society and to
administer the same in accordance with the terms agreed.
iv)
To raise necessary funds to maintain Educational institutions under the
management of the society and to administer the same.
Undoubtedly the relentless dedication and unflinching faith of the generous
founders that formed into the first Executive Committee made this rural college a
modern temple of learning. The following are the members of it.

The immense help, valuable guidance and generous co-operation extended by

the members of this committee combined with the undisturbed perseverance,
obsessional commitment and single minded devotion to work made the ideal of Sri
V.Ramakrishna real.
The Emblem of our College:
The emblem of our College is the symbolic expression of the objective of the
establishment
of this ideal
institution.
It
reflects
our Motto Tamasoma
Jyothirgamaya which means that the radiant light of knowledge spread everywhere
expels darkness of ignorance from the world. The torch is the means which shows
one the way to reach the destination safely. The rays of light emitted from the torch
represent the inevitable diffusion of knowledge. The three magic words under the
torch - Truth, Love and God are three divine principles that constitute true knowledge.
In conformity with the emblem chosen by the founders of our College, our institution
since its inception goes on expelling darkness i.e., ignorance from the minds of
backward people of this sleepy and remote area and provides real education on the
basis of three divine principles Truth, Love and God.
The Great Benefactors of the College:
It is said that nations without vision perish. It is also true of the individuals.
Sri Velagapudi Ramakrishna was a man of vision.
The birth and growth of this
institution reflected his vision. He was the greatest son of this soil.
He was an
exceptional genius and a man of outstanding personality.
After his education in
England, he was selected for I.C.S. In his service, he occupied several decisive
positions in different fields. To give real shape to his noble dreams of public service,
he resigned to his job nine years before his retirement and established a chain of
industries in Andhra and Orissa. Soon he became a giant among industrialists and
nation builders. His efforts to bring wealth to his village by sugar factory did not
succeed. When there was a suggestion to establish a college near his place of birth,
he gave his blessings and promise to this new enterprise without hesitation from his
sickbed. This rural area is extremely grateful to him for ever.
In many countries, certain families played a distinguished role in the political,
economic and social affairs. Such were the Bush family in recent times in the U.S.A,
and the Nehru and the Gandhi families in our country. Similarly the Velagapudi
family had played a pioneering role in the economic life of coastal Andhra districts.
Sri V. Ramakrishna was the man who started the family on its journey to fame,
fortune and popularity.
Sri Velagapudi Ramakrishna was singularly fortunate in his children. His
daughter Smt.P.Rajeswary Ramakrishnan is a person of many gifts and eminent in her
own right. Her father moulded her in his image. She was fortunate in her marriage
as she was married into a family of industrialists of Coimbatore.
Ever busy in
administering and guiding
many industries, acquiring power and glory,
Smt.
P.Rajeswary Ramakrishnan never forgot her father, nor the village, she came from.
After her fathers death she came forward and gave full support to the Repalle
Taluk Educational Improvement Society headed by Dr. N.V.Krishna Rao to redeem the
pledge of her father. She became the permanent President of the Executive Committee
of the Society.
Sri V.L. Dutt is a true heir to that distinguished Velagapudi family and its
traditions. He had his higher education in England and inherited from his father entrepreneurial talents, innovative wisdom, daring dynamism and clarity of vision. He
knew the end of wealth is ultimately happiness and well being of people. Like his
father, he is a man of vision. To perpetuate his fathers memory he donated to
educational institutions that amounted to crores of rupees. Fortunately ours is one of
them. He is the permanent member of our college Executive Committee.

Sri P.R. Ramakrishnan, husband of Smt. P.Rajeswary Ramakrishnan is the son of

Late V.Rangaswami Naidu known as the father of Textile Industry in Coimbatore. He
was the pioneer of varied industries and the founder of reputed technical educational
institutions. He became the permanent vice-president of our executive committee of
our college.
The Architects of our College:
In our country to think of an institution is largely to think of a person behind
it, who has nourished it, sustained it, shaped it and strengthened it by giving his
best, and inspiring others to give their best to it as well. Such was Dr.N.V.Krishna
Rao to S.V.R.M.College,Nagaram. Dr.N.V.Krishna Rao of Repalle Taluk was a reputed
doctor, well-known philanthropist, a social worker, friend and patron of all worthy causes.
Sri V.Ramakrishna and his family found in him the needed dreamer and devoted
worker to whom the task of nurturing the institution of learning could be safely
entrusted. He was known and respected for his integrity and honesty in Repalle
Taluk. It was true, that only because of him, the committee could raise 5 lakhs of
rupees as donations from the public for the College. He worked day and night for it.
He was the member of Executive Committee and ultimately the founder Secretary
and Correspondent of our College.
Dr. N.V.Krishna Rao was singularly fortunate enough to have an amiable,
understanding and efficient Principal Sri K.Umavaramurthy to face the challenge of the
birth and growth of this young sapling. Sri K.Umavara Murthy, a Principal from a Govt.
college on deputation has a tender heart, humanitarian outlook and keen interest in
literature and art. His latent qualities of idealism and academic vision blended
together turned him into a perfect administrator. He visualized correctly that a rural
institution like ours survives only by its academic achievements.
These two eminent persons of distinctive stature laid a sound foundation of
this reputed college.
The proud record of our College over the years with a rich
tradition of discipline and sincerity of learning revealed their memorable services and
sacrifices.
A Rich Tradition of discipline and learning:
The future of an institution is evident from the founders and architects of that
institution.
The ideals of them sanction a bright future. Our founder Secretary
and Correspondent Sri N.V.Krishna Rao believed that only men of character and
competence could promote excellence in what ever they did. He did not interfere
and did not allow others to interfere with the selection process in the matter of
appointment of our College staff and left it entirely to the interviewing committee
composed
of experts. The first Principal shared his views and they two were
extremely happy to have a band of devoted and enthusiastic lecturers who
completely
identified
themselves
with
the fortunes of the institution.
The
management gave all they could by the way of buildings, laboratories, furniture and
equipment, quarters for staff, hostel for students. It was then the task of the teachers
to mould the institution after their hearts desire and discharge the main function
namely impart education. But Dr. N.V.Krishna Rao and Sri K. Umavaramurthy together
believed that without discipline no worthwhile academic work was possible. They
took certain steps in this direction.
Our management is particular about the quality rather than the quantity.
Therefore it has set the maximum strength of the College as thousand and is always
resolute to stick to that number as far as it is possible.
Not a rupee has been collected by way of donation or otherwise from any
student for administration.
Sri
P.Ramakrishnan, our permanent
Vice-President
suggested to abandon elections for students union in order to build up peaceful
atmosphere of the College. It has been adopted . Formation of students union with
office bearers on the basis of their performance in the proceeding public examinations
has been introduced. From time to time it is sought to impress upon the students how
elections can vitiate the whole atmosphere with commercial viruses and political

fevers and fill it with a delirium of hatred. Utmost care has been taken in conducting
public examinations, absolutely free from malpractices. Periodical tests have been
introduced and saw to it that teaching is done effectively. Like peace, discipline is
indivisible. There is no discipline in the college with in disciplined hostel. Great care
has been taken in making the hostel and its administration free from corruption and
indiscipline. Politics, Casteism and usual strikes are kept away from college as far as
possible.
Our first Principal enthused the colleagues to take an active interest in extra
curricular activities. His fertile brain planned in a thousand ways to provide useful
outlets to the students
of this rural college.
The elocution and debating clubs
functioned freely with his active support. His plans included philatelical
club ,
Camera club, periodical playing of music to the students, study of birds through
binoculars, to observe stars using a telescope and many other stimulating activities.
He used to acquaint the teachers with the latent trends in different fields of
knowledge and advised them to follow contemporary trends through the foreign and
native magazines of good standard.
Our library can boast of a great number of
books in Humanities, Sciences and on art, Sculpture and architecture.
Both the founder secretary and the first Principal were intellectuals with a good
taste in literature, art, architecture, sciences etc. They planned several functions,
seminars and conferences and organized them successfully. Eminent men like the
Vice-Chancellors,Scientists,ChiefJustices,Professors,Teachers,Industrialists,educationists,
poets, persons in high position used to come and attended these functions. Laying
foundation for the main building of the College by the President of India Sri V.V.Giri,
the Decennial function, Silver Jubilee function, A.P. History Congress session were
some of them. Our President of India Sri V.V.Giri, the great Scientist Nayudamma,
Prof. Irfan Habib, Chairman of I.C.H.R., Prof. D.N. Jha of Delhi University, Prof. S. Naga
Raju of Central University, Dr. M.L. Nigam, Prof. Dada Abdul Bakar of Nigeria etc., were
a few among our distinguished guests.
Either the management or the Principal always encouraged the staff to improve
their academic excellence. In return the staff motivated the students to reach the
higher levels of learning .
The management and the staff faced problems together
as they were normal to any growing institution of learning. They overcame all the
troubles with a conviction that this institution was a means of honest service in the
cause of the poor and deprived. For eight years, our college was unaided. Our
management has born the cost of salaries, roughly a lakh of rupees per month even in
those days. In 1977, the killer cyclone struck it and destroyed the major portion of the
college. But our founders stood by our side and helped us substantially. Altogether by
1980, they gave 60 lakhs in cash, which went into buildings and other amenities.
When age crept upon Dr. N.V.Krishna Rao and he was unable to extend his
services, Sri K.Umavara Murthy shouldered the responsibility as the Secretary and
Correspondent. He molded the young staff members who were part time to perceive
the spirit of the institution and the vision of the founders.
After him, Sri V.Subba Rao,
Joint Secretary of our Managing Committee and A.D.L.Prasad, M.D., Chagallu Sugars
became the Correspondent and the Secretary
consecutively. Sri V. Subba Rao an
admirer and faithful follower of Dr. N.V.Krishna Rao has been working with the same
commitment to develop college further. Sri A.D.L.Prasad a good administrator, with a
real concern for the employees provided all amenities necessary to face modern
challenges. Hence they have started two P.G. courses recently and a new chapter is
opened in our history.
Even the Principals who worked after the retirement of Sri K.Umavara Murthy
strived to make the vision of the management real as they have been in service from
the beginning. Under their guidance, our College has moved forward to keep its
reputation for ever and ever.
The present Principal, Dr. V.K. Mohan is a great authority on History and
Archaeology. He was awarded Ph.D., in Archaeology by Telugu University in 1994.
He has proved himself as a very efficient administrator by taking up a number of
curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. He has invited many eminent

scientists, doctors and academicians and arranged their guest lectures.

He has 34
years of experience in teaching and administration as the head of the department. He
is sparing no efforts to give a face lift to the college and also to motivate the staff
and students towards reaching new heights in teaching learning and also the
upkeep of the College. He wants to put the institution at the top on the academic map
of Coastal Andhra. Under his able leadership the college is preparing itself for
accreditation by National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore.
It is our objective to train up students in all dimensions. Our NSS, NCC and
Physical Education wings have established a good record in the state. Besides many
other associations are working to develop a broad out look among students.
In these three and half decades of its existence, thousands of students passed
through this college portals. Many colleges and schools have been established around
and away from Nagaram in these years. Many of our students are working in these
institutions along with many others in various fields. In their gratitude, they gifted old
students buildings in the form of donations. In this way, our College has brought a
silent revolution in our poverty ridden region .
Where once stood ruined walls and thorny bushes, now stand beautiful and
fully equipped laboratories and spacious lecture halls, a beautiful library, often praised
as an architectural marvel by distinguished
visitors, Archaeological Museum,
Administrative buildings, a set of staff quarters and hostel for boys and girls were built.
A visitor to the college will at once be impressed by the clean, green and calm campus
of our college. One leaves the institution with a bundle of pleasant feelings. All this has
been possible because of the devoted staff, the disciplined students and the dynamic and
enlightened management.
We look forward to future to work with commitment and make our institution
purely an academic institution where students get all round development and training.
