EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This

financial

accounting

textbook

is

designed

for

either

undergraduate or M.B.A. financial accounting students. Previous editions of

the book have earned very strong reviews (e.g., Issues in Accounting
Education, February 1999). The eighth edition, like prior ones, is arranged
in a traditional format around the balance sheet. The book effectively
employs a user-oriented approach while providing a solid foundation in the
mechanics of financial accounting. The end-of-chapter materials are
outstanding in terms of both quantity and quality. As expected of an eighth
edition, the book is largely free of typographical errors (with the exception
of the spelling of the last name of a notable athlete). In the eighth edition,
the authors have added additional features that improve a textbook that
was already excellent. These additional features are the primary focus of
this review.
One strength of the book is the use of relevant real-world
illustrations to provide frames of reference and to reinforce key concepts.
1

In addition to many excellent illustrations carried over from the previous

edition, several illustrations are added that focus on the technology and ecommerce industries, and the unique challenges related to accounting for
and analyzing these industries. The Cisco Systems, Inc. annual report is
included with the textbook and reference is made to Cisco in the text of
most chapters and in multiple exercises at the end of each chapter.
Several other technology and Internet-related companies are discussed as
well, including IBM, Yahoo!, Amazon.com, eBay, Intel, and Microsoft.
Each chapter contains several vignettes and side-boxes designed to
encourage the reader to pause and think about the material ("Take 5's") or
to provide insight into the operations at well-known companies ("Business
First Boxes"). The "Take 5's" effectively reinforce key points. The "Business
First Boxes" provide frames of reference that enable the students to
consider the material in the context of recognizable companies. Each
technique contributes to the overall learning experience and differentiates
this book from other financial accounting textbooks.
At the end of each chapter, the authors have added "cognitive
exercises" designed to provoke critical thinking. These items require
students to employ key concepts and mechanics from the chapter to
develop the best solution to the question posed. The "cognitive exercises"
are generally well-conceived and a nice addition to an already strong set
of end-of-chapter materials.
The authors have made modest but important improvements to an
already excellent textbook. Undergraduate or graduate instructors who are
adopting an initial Financial Accounting textbook or are not entirely
satisfied with their current text should strongly consider this book.
PEMBELAJARAN DIPEROLEHI
At the conclusion of this book, the reader will be able to:
Understand the financial sources and the requirements.
Understand the role of governing body in accounting.
2

Understand the nature and importance of capital structure and the cost of
capital.
Understand and apply the principles of working capital management.
Understand the impact of global and multi-national operations on corporate
financial management.
APLIKASI DI DALAM ORGANISASI
The important chapter in this book that can be applied in school
organization is corporate governance. In this chapter, we learn on how to
organize an organization based on international standard to ensure organization
operation are on the right track. The lack in corporate governance will give a big
impact on organization performance as a whole.
Even though schools are not a corporate organization, but there is a
similarity in the way on how to manage the organization effectively. Reader could
use some method from this book to be applied in school organization.
