Topographic Map
3rd, 4th, & 5th Failures

What Now??
To this point, we had been REACTING to a problem we
didnt know existed.
We assumed that the trigger for the failure was a weak layer
at the base of the first failure, focusing our analyses and
designs at this location
In actuality, the trigger was ABOVE the first failure
Isolated, perched groundwater flows were seeping out the face of
the slope, saturating the soil beneath it and reducing the shear
strength of the clays to the point of incipient failure.
Each additional cut into the slope we made only shortened the
drainage path of the flows, increasing seepage forces at the face of
the slope

Late Summer 2013 approaching wet season

Needed a PROACTIVE solution

What do we Need?
Stabilization at multiple, discrete levels of the slope
Stabilization system needed to include a robust drainage
system capable of draining perched groundwater from deep
within the slopeat unknown locations & elevations
With the wet season approaching, we needed a system
capable of rapid construction
Stay within the current ROW footprint

Two-Tiered Soil Nail Retaining Wall with integrated

horizontal drains.

Contracting
Terminated contract with existing contractor
Coordinated with ALDOT 2nd Division personnel to produce
contract drawings specifying location, height, and batter of
required soil nail walls, along with surface drainage features
and grading plan
ALDOT approved soil nail contractors were invited to bid on
the project

Geostabilization International awarded
