Justification of Storytelling- Beauty and the Beast

Children love stories, they make interesting images in the minds when listening to a story.
Teaching by story telling is one of the best method of teaching ,the teacher can employ in any
lesson presentation. Psychologists believe that children need stories, legends and fairy tales
when they grow up. They are a part of childrens intellectual life. They provoke their fantasy and
give them answers to important questions of a childs life. They are meaningful and effective
item of their socialization. I had choose the fairy tales story which entitle Beauty and the Beast
as my storytelling in the task.
Fairy tales express inner intensity of a child, which he or she unconsciously understand
and which offer different possibilities of problem solving. Fairy tales always have good end. At
the end a good man is awarded - for his or her good nature, persistence, courage - a bad man
is affected by upright punishment.
There are many ways of telling a story especially to young learners. A story teller must
be ready to improvise in a creative way to accommodate all the different variables of storytelling
event. Thus an effective storyteller must engage and manipulate certain crafts and techniques
for example voice projection, diction, poise, gesture, facial expression, body movement, time,
intonation and props to get the desired outcomes.
First of all, one of the key elements is the voice of the storyteller, the ability to project
his/her voice intonations according to the character in the stories being told. In my storytelling, I
had tried my hard to produce a good voice projection because I know that produce a good voice
projection is very important. If the children can hear your voice clearly, they will pay their
attention on your storytelling. In the story however I will try to relax myself and open my mouth
wide, so that I will end up producing a big and clear sound.
Next, craft of storytelling include the diction and poise too. As a story teller, I need to
ensure I stay connected with my audience. Apart from projecting my voice so that all can hear, I
would also ensure that I use appropriate diction where words are enunciated carefully and that I
use my voice effectively. I tried to tell my story in a not too fast or too slow ways. Pronunciation
is very important and in this area I should improve myself from the words pronunciation because
I have strong accents.

Poise and gestures are very important too when we tell a story. In my story telling, I had
shown lack of confident when telling a story. Therefore, a storyteller must remain poised,
relaxed while presenting a story, look and sound must be confident and always makes eyes
contact with the listeners because it can hold their attention. Gestures include movement of the
hands, face or others part of body. In my storytelling, I had included gestures which allow
audience to control over the story.
Besides, facial expressions and body movement are also vital aids. I use facial
expressions when telling the story to convey the emotional state of the different characters.
Effective use of facial expressions can help communicate the complexity of feelings to children.
I used body movement reinforces, emphasizes, and clarifies verbally expressed ideas of the
story.
Time management is important for a storyteller. My story was going well because not too
long or not too short, the time is being well managed. Intonation is about how we say things,
rather than what we say. It is a variation of pitch while speaking. In my storytelling, I had
produced good intonations which contain rising and falling action and the intonations are
connected to expressions.
Craft of storytelling involve props too. The props that I had done are the calendar with
stories background pictures and stick puppets which show different characters in the story. It is
visuals props that children will love to see it because it is a big pictures calendar.
According to Maria Furst (1997), obvious polarization between good and bad makes
different situations explicit and comprehensible. Characters are not individual, unique, but
typical. That is why the identification is easier. A child identifies with a young hero not because
he is good, but because he titles the child, and if the hero is good character, the child wants
to be good as well.
One of the techniques and strategies exploring is aesthetic values. Through the story
Beauty and the Beast, it impresses the good deeds for students. They will appreciate the
inner beauty of the beauty and not inner ugliness.
Besides, linguistic features are very important too in the story telling. A teacher must
know what the needs of the students are and what the level they had reached. In my storytelling
Beauty and the beast is the narrative stories which contain sequence of events and it is in

chronological order. There are some dialogues in this story and the vocabulary is in medium
level for children Year 3 to learn.
Other than that, one of the techniques and strategies exploring is intellectual
development. Classic fairy tales solve a problem important for a human in particular
developmental stage. The story that I told can relate to childrens real life. Psychologists believe
that human mental development is in progress of several periods. In every period we try to cope
with a problem, gain some skills and experience, which is very important for our next life. These
periods tie together on themselves. Successful command of one period is precondition of
antiquation of problems in following period. Through the story Beauty and the beast, it supplies
the imagination with information that the self also uses to distinguish what is true from what is
not.
Last but not least, the moral values or personal development is being carried out from
my storytelling. The story draws our attention to her virtuous character. Beautys moral
goodness her inner beauty is contrast with her sisters pride, vanity and selfishness- their
inner ugliness. From the story, children learn that we cannot judge a book by its cover because
we will never know a real person with wearing the mask.
In conclusion, stories are an ideal tool in learning language as they guide us through our
whole life. So, not only learning our mother tongue, but also other foreign languages through
stories can make our effort more interesting, amusing and memorable.
