- Antepartum: time between conception and the onset

of labor; usually used to describe the period during


which a woman is pregnant; used interchangeably
with prenatal.
- Intrapartum: time from the onset of true labor until
the birth of the infant and placenta.
- Postpartum: time from the delivery of the placenta
and membranes until the womans body returns to a
non-pregnant condition.
- Gestation: the number of weeks of pregnancy since
the first day of the last menstrual period.
- Gravida : a woman who is pregnant
- Gravidity: Pregnancy.
- Multigravida: a woman who has had two or more
pregnancies.
- Multipara: a woman who has completed two or more
pregnancies to the stage of fetal viability.
- Nulligravida: a woman who has never been pregnant.
- Nullipara: a woman who has not completed a
pregnancy with a fetus or fetuses who have reached
the stage of fetal viability.
- Parity: the number of pregnancies in which the fetus
or fetuses have reached viability when they are born,
not the number of fetuses (twins) born.
- Postterm: a pregnancy that goes beyond 42 weeks of
gestation.

- Preterm: a pregnancy that has reached 20 weeks of


gestation but before completion of 37 weeks of
gestation.
- Primigravida: a woman who is pregnant for the first
time.
- Primipara: a woman who has completed one
pregnancy with a fetus of fetuses
- Term: a pregnancy from the beginning of week 38 of
gestation to the end of week 42 of gestation.
- Viability: capacity to live outside the uterus , about
22 to 24 weeks since last menstrual period, or fetal
weight greater than 500g.
- Abortion : Pregnancy ending before age of viability.
Elective and spontaneous abortions are counted
together.
- Stillbirth: an infant born dead after 20 weeks
gestation.

pregnancy resulted in twins born at 35 weeks ,and both

- Pregnancy is measured from the first day of the last

- Gestation is measured from conception (approximately


38 weeks).

- Use these steps :
1. Determine the first day of the last menstrual
period (LMP)
2. Subtract 3 months from month
3. Add 7 days
4. Add 1 to the year if LMP after March.
