Downton, P. F. (2009). Ecopolis: Architecture and Cities for a Changing Climate (Vol. 1).
Adelaide, Australia: CSIRO Publishing.
This book written by Paul F. Downtown in the year 2009 demonstrates how cities
vary in terms of their needs, design and other key aspects like city planning and ecology. He
further narrowed it down into how these cities, acting as structures and ecology at the same time,
can be contributors to green living. He also highlighted the need for deeper understanding of how
cities have the role as agents of change and survival. In addition, it was also emphasized that the
city frameworks should be integrating knowledge of its overall impact in the surrounding
environment.
Girardet, H. (2008). Cities People Planet (2nd edition ed.). (H. Castle, Ed.) Chihester, West
Sussex, England: John Wiley and Sons Ltd.
Herbert Girardet in his book depicts how urban growth is reshaping human condition.
With over half of the population migrating into cities, the survival of resources and means of it is
being questioned. He specified that there is a great need for us to "future-proof" cities and other
urban hubs to the ever altering climate. He also made mention of enough certainty that the
domination of human over cities will lead to ecological constraint. In the book, he stipulated
ways on how to construct cities that will be sustainable for large population without causing
great depletion of natural resources.

This article report how urbanization, specifically the creation of new urban hubs
with great structural development, can cause huge amount of carbon footprint. Recent studies
mentioned in the article states that majority of urban structure and landscape has effect over the
area as compared to those less urbanized. The densely populated area of cities produce greater
amount of carbon as compared to those with less dense area. So it is evaluated in the essay that

lesser emission should be targeted to achieve key results. Comprehensive action plan is also
stipulated in the paper to effectively achieve a low-carbon urban landscape.

Proctor, R. (2009). 1000 new eco designs. (G. Sermon, Ed.) City Road, United Kingdom:
Laurence King Publishing Ltd.
This book from Proctor describes how we can achieve sustainable living through the
use modern technology. She also made mention of the unprecedented dependence of human
beings on unsustainable materials like fossil fuels. Under the recent onslaught of mass media to
provide sufficient information about how things are processed or the processes undergone by the
material which we use every day, Proctor thought that it is important for people o understand
how things we use is affecting our environment.

The paper written by Marilyn Brown and Frank Southworth illustrates the
potential role of a climate-friendly built environment done in a broader look. It also shows how
barriers are being broken in the recent development in structural building and urban densities.
Green buildings and smart growth strategies is the key to reducing carbon footprint reduction. In
fact, in the studies conducted based on the paper, there is seen reduction in need for energy,
meaning there are more chances of having sustainable living in the near future. Also, it explains
the trend about reducing the green house gases emitted by households and as well as urban hubs.
Constructing cities are now with sustainable standards due to greener technology.
