4th Quarter Performance Task on Physics (20%)

Optics-based Security Plan

_____________________________________________________________

Goal: To propose a security design of a room (containing expensive artifacts) using lasers, mirrors, and glass blocks. (Topic on reflection , refraction, and total internal
reflection)
Role: You are an architect/optical engineer.
Audience: The security group of the Ayala Group of Companies
Situation: Ayala Group of Companies is about to open their museum for public viewing of some artifacts from pre-spanish time. These artifacts include basins, dagger,
belt, crowns, staffs, animal figures, and vases, all made of gold. As other people prepare the location of the exhibit, you were asked to propose a security system
for the storage room of these artifacts. The security system needed is laser-based, which involves mirrors and glass blocks. The laser you will use will
automatically trigger the alarm if the pathway of light beam will be cut from source to the receiver.
Product: Blueprint of the room that shows your anti-theft plan using two-dimenstional ray diagram. The general features of the blueprint must begin with a square room
wherein all corners are covered with plants and the position of the artifacts are situated anywhere in the middle of the room. There should only be one laser and
one optical receiver

Positions of artifacts, lasers, glass blocks, and

measurements of angles, ray diagrams and
labels are clearly presented and strategic. Prisms
are drawn clearly, including normal and
tangential lines to show deviation of light.
Computations are shown neatly.

Positions of artifacts, lasers, glass blocks,

measurements of angles and distances, ray
diagrams and labels are presented. Prisms
are drawn clearly including normal lines to
show deviation of light. Computations are
shown for most devices.

Minor errors in the ray

diagrams can be seen. Some
angles of incidence, reflection,
and refraction are not labeled
but the general pathway of light
is complete and sensible.

The plan is incomplete and has no

labels. Computations are made but
doesn t support the blueprint.

Accurate and clear angles and ray diagrams are

presented. All laws of reflection and refraction
are followed. Correct computations for the
angle of reflection and refraction are included.
Measurement of incident rays and refracted rays
are based on the tangent and normal line.

All angles of light ray diagrams are correct

and identified rules of refraction and
reflection are followed. Computations are
included for the angles of reflection and
refraction. Measurement of incident rays
and tangent lines is based on the tangent
and normal line.

Some angles shown are not to

scale yet figures show correct
computation. Computations
may contain careless mistakes
in positioning of angles.

More than 1 angle of incidence,

reflection or refractions are made
based from the surface and not
from the normal, some angles are
unrealistic. Computation of angles
of incidence, reflection, and
refraction are incorrect.

The plan is of high quality that covers all

possible entry points and artifacts. Design is
unlikely to be robbed. Plan is highly feasible.
Makes use of only a maximum of 4 mirrors
and/or 4 glass blocks or prisms, includes prisms
not included in the given. All mirrors and
prisms are attached to the wall.

The plan covers the doors and artifacts.

Plan is feasible. Makes use of all provided
materials and only a maximum of 5 mirrors
and 3 glass blocks and a prism. All mirrors
and prisms are attached to the wall.

The plan covers a lot of entry

points but did not cover the
artifacts. Plan is feasible with
two minor adjustment. Makes
use of maximum of 8 mirrors
and 2 out of 3 glass blocks. All
mirrors are on the wall.

Poor quality anti-theft plan that

shows possible entry points, or the
laser passes through covered areas.
Plan is not feasible. Makes use of
more than 8 mirrors and no or
misused glass block.

4th Quarter Performance Task on Geome

In a nutshell...

Objectives:
1. Plot mirrors and prisms around the
room to direct light from laser to the
receiver.
2. You are required to use all the
materials provided including laser and
receiver. You may place all mirrors,
prisms, laser and receiver at any wall of
the room.
3. Path of laser should not cross the
plants or the pillars.
4. Laser path should cover all possible
entry and exit as well as the artifacts.
(Robber might be able to enter through
the ceiling.)
5. Prisms and mirrors cannot be placed
where there is no wall/divider.
6. You may use other prisms that are
not in the minimum requirement/given.
7. Correct angles of incidence,
reflection, and refraction should be
shown.
8. Magnify the prisms so as to clearly
show the deviation of light rays.
9. Correct computations should be
clearly shown.

FAQ:
1. When is the deadline?
- Thursday (27 Feb. 2014)
2. Can we work in groups?
- No. You may seek assistance from your classmates or
teacher, but learn the skill not the answer.
3. Can it be hand written?
Yes, but beware of drawing the angles, they should be drawn
scaled to their labels and computations you made.
4. Where should I put our laser-based anti-theft plan?
You may print the appropriate page to you, as indicated in the
individual task information and draw on them.
5. Can I use pencil?
By all means. You may also use other colors of ink.
6. Should I still draw the normal and tangential lines?
-Yes. But if the prism is too small in your drawing, you can
magnify it by redrawing it in any free space outside the room.
7. Can I use lenses?
There is no need for that as we observe only one ray of light.
