WE L COM E
elcome aboard Wizz Air, the
largest low-cost carrier in Central
and Eastern Europe. Summers
finally here and whether you're off on a
sunny holiday to Tel Aviv, spa break to
Budapest or business trip to any one of
our 96 destinations, we hope you enjoy
your flight and have a fantastic time.
It may be summer, but as ever, its
been a busy couple of months for Wizz
Air. Apart from celebrating our 10-year
anniversary, weve been adding more
low-fare flights for you to choose from,
starting with the introduction of an
additional aircraft at Gdansk. Flying from
this historic Polish city youll see increased
flights to some of our most popular
destinations including Malta, London
Luton, Stockholm, Oslo and Alesund. The
wonderful, diverse country of Poland is
where it all began for Wizz Air, and it gives
us a great thrill to continue to grow our
services in Poland in the year we celebrate
our 10th anniversary.
And that's not all. From 19th June we
will base the first Airbus A320 at our new
base in Latvias capital, Riga. On the
same day we will also expand operations
in Bosnia and Herzegovina, adding two
new services from Tuzla to the scenic

German city of Dortmund and bustling

Eindhoven in the Netherlands.
And were not just offering you a
lot more low-fare seats on even more
routes to celebrate our 10th anniversary
year! We were honoured to be able to
participate in the Budapest Airshow,
held on 1 May, an event cherished by the
inhabitants and guests alike of the Pearl
of the Danube. Our brand-new A320
aircraft put on a fantastic display above

the river to the delight of onlookers and

it was the first time an Airbus had ever
been involved in the show. We were also
thrilled to announce our sponsorship of
the successful Skopje Marathon. Held in
the heart of the Macedonian capital, this
was the first time the marathon added a
partner to its name. The Wizz Air Skopje
Marathon took place on 11 May and was a
resounding success and we are very proud
to have been the title sponsor.
Finally, we may be in the midst of
summer but its never too early to start
thinking about your winter break. Fancy
a skiing holiday in Bulgaria or Georgia,
or what about that magical trip to one
of the wonderful European Christmas
markets? Wizz Air has just released its
winter schedule for early bookings, so take
advantage and visit our website as soon as
you can for an early deal.
As ever, we thank you for your loyalty
to Wizz Air and on behalf of the crew
aboard your flight today, I wish you a
relaxed journey and an enjoyable trip
wherever youre heading.

Le Tour de... Yorkshire?

Le Tour de France is associated with the
Pyrenees and the Alps, but this year the
worlds most famous bike tournament
starts at the Yorkshire Dales in the UK
Stage one and two of the historic Tour de
France the gruelling 3,000km cycling race
will pass through the pretty towns and villages
north of Doncaster and Sheffield and its
creating quite a stir. Farmers in the Yorkshire
Dales are offering up land for camping; Tour
road signs are popping up everywhere; and
keen cyclists are bragging about how theyve
already conquered Chimney Bank one of the
routes toughest hills.
Christian Prudhomme, director of Le Tour
says: When we visited Yorkshire, it captured
our imagination. The Grand Dpart will be
visually stunning and technically challenging,
and prove an unforgettable start to the 2014
Tour. Although we can only imagine he hasnt

visited the dales on a drizzly day. A word of

advice to spectators? Pack your anorak.
For the third stage on 7 July, riders will
complete a 159km stretch from Cambridge to
London before crossing the Channel for the
route from Le Touquet to Lille. Stage five the
traditional Paris-Riboux road race is deemed
the Hell of the North due to its cobblestoned
terrain. Hugging the French border, the Tour
heads to Mulhouse in the east and Pau in the
west, dipping in to Spain before a tough climb
through the Prigueux region and the dramatic
finale in Paris on 27 July.
James Lovell, founder of the Harrogatebased Cappuccino Cycling Club, believes the
Tour in Yorkshire will leave a sporting legacy in
the county. Weve seen a massive increase
in membership, he says. Hopefully this will
put us on the map as a cycling destination,
with riders coming to race the hillside tracks
in many years to come. letour.com

THE GRAND BIRDHOUSE HOTEL

We are big Wes Anderson fans
you may remember a story we ran
about his latest film, The Grand
Budapest Hotel, in a recent issue.
So we were delighted to hear
that Clinic 212, a creative agency
based in Vilnius, had created a
three-room boutique hotel, just for
birds. We really loved the movie,
says Jolanta Pupkeviciene. Our
office is by Tauro Kalnas park.
From the window, we saw birds
hopping about, and thats how we
came up with the idea of creating
a bird hotel. It took the team three

days to build the accommodation

for Vilniuss fine feathered friends.
We hope our beautiful, tiny
Grand Budapest Hotel will remain
in good condition for a while,
says Jolanta, mindful of its
exposure to the elements. So,
how many lucky birds have
checked in so far? We placed
the hotel close to a bird-feeding
station, so there are always a lot of
them about, particularly sparrows.
Were sure a few have popped in
for an after-dinner nap.

WHAT WERE
TALKING ABOUT

Cycling Style
When we travelled to Riga for
our biking story (p36), we were
surprised to see many cyclists
riding on the pavements. Yet unlike
other big cities, cars, cyclists and
pedestrians all got along.

The French capital is at war: those who

favour the citys love locks versus those
who see them as an act of vandalism
Romance is dead in the capital of love. OK,
thats a bit dramatic, but Parisian officials
are certainly putting a dampener on things. A
recent online petition set up by two Americans
living in the city aims to rid the city bridges of
their popular love padlocks and, quelle horreur,
it has gained the backing of local authorities.
The concept behind these love locks is
simple: lovers write their names on a padlock,
attach it to the bridge, then throw the key into
the water below, symbolising their undying
love for one another. These tokens of affection
first arrived in Paris over a decade ago, and
this is not the first time officials have tried to
rid the city of them. In 2010, officers wielding
wire cutters stealthily removed all of the
padlocks on the Pont de lArchevch, near

the Notre Dame Cathedral, in the middle of

the night. But it wasnt too long before they
reappeared. Now there are love locks on
bridges all across Paris it is estimated that
there are some 700,000 on the Pont des Arts
alone. Romantics see them as an expression of
undying commitment in the form of a colourful,
glittering mosaic; pragmatists see them as an
act of vandalism, a metal tumour dangerously
weighing down the citys most beautiful
bridges. Whose side are you on?
Did You Know?
The history of love locks began in World War I
in Serbia. A schoolmistress in the small spa
town of Vrnjacka Banja would regularly meet
her lover at the bridge. Come the war, he
left for Greece and ended the engagement,
leaving her broken-hearted. Young girls would
affix padlocks to the bridge where they met as
a way of protecting their own relationships.

CREAM OF THE CROP

Nothing embodies the Great British Summer
quite like the iconic 99 a vanilla ice
cream with a chocolate flake wedged in the
top, served in a wafer cone. Last summer
photographer Luke Stephenson travelled 3,500
miles over 25 days to shoot 99 pictures of this
oh-so British treat. A couple of years ago
I took some photographs of ice-cream vans
and started to think about the 99 flake as an
icon of my childhood, he says. I felt it was
a rite of passage for a British photographer;
the Americans have their road trips across the
country, we have the seaside. 99x99s.com

DODA
Raunchy videos and religious statements Polish rock
star Doda is not one to shy away from controversy. But
where did the vocal star get her competitive edge?

doubled the number of bone

marrow donors in Poland.
Thats the beautiful side of
my country, the singer says.
In half a year we gained more
donors than in the previous 10
years. We can come together
and be united in a second when
the time comes; for a bigger
cause we can move mountains.
Its a huge honour to receive
letters from people thanking
me because they found a

I am the architect
of my own fortune
donor for themselves, their
daughter or father.
Doda was born Dorota
Rabczewska in Ciechanw, in
north-central Poland. She was
brought up to be open and
honest from a young age.
My parents taught me that
the worst truth is better than
the most beautiful lie, says the
singer, whose father is Olympian
weight lifter Pawe Rabczewska.
And I was fortunate to be in a
small class in a private primary
school where they taught us how
to be independent, creative and
different. Ive plenty of lasting
friendships from Ciechanw.
Every time I visit my family, I go

to the Community Centre where

I took my first steps on the stage
and, as a teenager, drank wine
with my first boyfriend.
Given her gene pool, Dodas
early promise as an athlete
came as no surprise. However,
her true passion was music, so
she swapped the relay baton for
a microphone.
My father told me in sport that
when you are first at the finish
line, no one will argue with that,
she says. In music, no matter
how beautifully you sing, there is
always going to be some wholl
try to bring you down. Youll
never be satisfied. Naturally, I
chose the tougher route.
She started her music career
heading rock band Virgin the
video for their song Dzaga
had her in steamy scenes with
her future husband, Polish
goalkeeper Radosaw Majdan.
They married in 2005; the union
lasted three years.
In 2007 Doda turned solo
singer, her album Diamond B*tch
selling 45,000 units. By the time
of her second album, The Seven
Temptations, in 2011, Doda
had a new electro-rock sound
and a legion of new fans. While
her music style had changed,
the singers ability to shock had
not. In 2012, a music video for
the song F*ck It, in which she
and Polish rapper Fokus play

hoodlums who hold up a food

store, was banned. The same
year she was also convicted for
offending religious sensibilities
after comments made in a TV
interview. And although Doda
was forced to pay a fine it
doesnt seem to have scared her
from speaking her mind.
Thats the thing about
rebellious people they never
choose the routes already paved
by someone else, she shrugs. I
go my own path and sometimes
I encounter a bump in the road.
I dont care what others say or
think about me. No one will ever
die for me, so no one should tell
me how l should live.

DODA IN HOT WATER

During a TV interview in 2009,
Doda remarked that she found
dinosaurs more credible than
she did the Bible because it
is hard to believe in something
written by people who drank too
much wine and smoked herbal
cigarettes. She was charged
by the Warsaw prosecution
office with offending religious
sensibilities, and was found
guilty in 2012. Doda was fined
5,000 zoty (1,200). The
singer appealed the verdict, but
was unsuccessful.

WORDS BY PIERRE DE VILLIERS

t comes as little surprise

that when we catch up
with Doda, she is in a
feisty mood. Being outspoken,
you risk having enemies, but
is that important for an artist?
No. Its a price we should
pay with dignity, she says.
The controversy surrounding
my career is a result of my
unusual personality. Im not
afraid to speak my mind and do
things that others only dream
of because theyre scared of
losing their good reputation. I
have the luxury of being honest
because Ive worked very hard
and, consequently, Im aware
that no one can take it away
from me, except me. I am the
architect of my own fortune.
Doda has certainly earned
the right to get onto her soapbox
now and again. Throughout
her career she has won more
than two dozen awards,
including 12 of Polands Viva
Comet awards and two MTV
European Music Awards. All
of her albums have reached
platinum status and the BBC
placed her in the category of
Top 10 most known people
from Poland. Such is her
influence that in 2010, when
her then-fianc Adam Darski,
of metal band Behemoth, was
diagnosed with leukaemia Doda
launched a campaign that

Beatrix Ber

WORDS BY ALISON CULLIFORD / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAURA STEVENS

Each issue we talk to an expat entrepreneur.

This month its Beatrix Ber, who runs Hungarian
restaurant Bashka in Pariss north Marais

What brought you from

Budapest to Paris?
I first came here 20 years
ago as a student to study
literature. My father was a
painter and my mother taught
French at the university
in Budapest. When I was 17
she died suddenly, and I
decided to head for Paris, the
city of my dreams.
Have you lived here
ever since?
Ive moved between Paris
and Budapest. I worked in PR
and events planning, but for a
long time I wanted to create a
place on the theme of Eastern
Europe, which would explain
where we come from and who
we are. Because even though

the Wall had fallen 20 years

earlier, people from Western
and Eastern Europe didnt
know each other at all.
People would say, Oh youre
Hungarian, and list
stereotypes that were often
negative. So I wanted to
create a place that expresses
the beauty and positive things
about Eastern Europe. Two
things that I knew would be
an immediate way to engage
the French were eating and
drinking, and art!
How did Beashka begin?
It started life in 2012 as a
specialist food shop and art
gallery. I then spent five
months battling with French
bureaucracy to get a licence for

a restaurant and to install

a kitchen. At first we had a
French chef doing Eastern
European cuisine, but you
really need a local. I found a
chef in Budapest who is really
marvellous: Andrs Ksa. He
knows all the influences on our
cuisine, because its a mix of
everything from Byzantium to
Napoleon thats why we
dub it Central Europe,
because everyone has been
through here.

Who comes here?

All sorts, but essentially
people who are open to
the world. We have lots of
intellectuals, people who are
ready to discover something
for themselves.

Thursday there is a jazz evening
with musicians from all over
Eastern Europe. I want to give
a platform to young artists, who
still find it difficult to establish
themselves here in France.
Did you design the place
yourself?
Yes, in fact its all my own
furniture! I wanted to create a
place where people could enter
and feel that they have stepped
into another country. It also
feels like someone's home. We
could add a few more tables but
it would spoil the ambience.
Do you think Parisians
appreciate Hungarian
wine?
Yes, they do, mainly because
Tokaji is so famous. At
Ba'shka we select our
wines very carefully and
they like them. But they dont
know them as well as our
English and Dutch customers.
Ive been amazed they
know the grape varieties and
the labels.

Bashkas more than a

restaurant, isnt it? Its also
a cultural centre.
Yes. I organise different
events, from literary evenings
to exhibitions and film
screenings. We have an
exhibition of a Hungarian
journalist and illustrator at the
moment who expresses a lot
about our confused identity
in Eastern Europe. We had a
Czech evening based around

Is Paris your home now,

definitively?
I dont consider myself an
immigrant. I consider myself a
European who lives here now,
but who could live somewhere
else tomorrow. I think, and
hopefully, the children of today
who are increasingly mixed
European will bring about a
beautiful Europe. Umberto
Eco said that the Erasmus
student exchange is creating

Europe, because 80% of its

scholarships result in a child.
Its super! I have a FrancoHungarian child, he has two
cultures and two languages
developing in parallel, and
before he was born, he did
40 European trips by plane,
so these children experience it
differently. And 20- to 25-year
olds who come here recognise
it immediately they have
travelled to Budapest, they
speak a foreign language. We
have many clients who have
done Erasmus.
Have low-cost airlines also
played a part?
Definitely! I grew up with the
low-cost bus and it was hell
Paris-Budapest was 24 hours if
you were lucky. Then there was
InterRail. The border was open,
but no one could afford it. For
us, the first low-cost travel was
InterRail on fake tickets which
you cant do on aeroplanes!

FOOD & DRINK

What do the
Northern Lights
Taste Like?
n the far north of
Sweden, there are
people who claim theyve
actually heard the Northern
Lights. They say its a kind of
sparkling sound, says Bjrn
Ylip, who grew up in the region.
Ive not heard it myself, but when
others said they had, I started to
think: could you taste it too? How
would the Northern Lights taste?
Not long after, the self-styled
food artist found himself lying
in the snow at his cottage near
the Finnish border. As the lights
danced overheard, he began
dreaming of how an aurora
might tingle on his taste buds.
Bjrns fascination with
flavours is no passing whim.

After leaving school, he ran a

restaurant for 13 years and at
the age of 35 joined a culinary
academy in central Sweden.
There he discovered that some
of the older students shared his
taste in music. One record in
particular, mixing melancholy
lyrics from the north of Sweden
with Cuban sounds, provided
them with a dose of inspiration.
We thought: how does that
music taste? Can you do an
event or a food experience
based on that music?
There then followed a themed
evening, in which a live band
played as students served a
four-course meal, proceeding
from tapas to reindeer meat and

back to cigars and rum,

mirroring the musics
varied influences.
That was when I
realised that you can use
food in different ways,
says Bjrn. You can tell
stories with it, and stimulate
all five of the senses.
Bjrn has since founded the
company Mltidsvision (Meal
Vision) to help corporate
clients sell their brands with
an innovative twist. Earlier this
year, as part of Swedens bid to
promote Ume as a European
Capital of Culture, it used
food, music, sound and images
to take guests on a journey
through the Sami calendar,

which is traditionally divided up

into eight different seasons. It
also worked on an outdoor art
project to convey the struggle
wild salmon face when swimming
upriver, and the beauty of their
migration. The spoons of food
(tartar of salmon with chilli) were
laid out in a river-like shape and
accompanied by live music.

In May, when Stockholm
hosted the European finals of the
Bocuse dOr chef competition,
Mltidsvision was drafted in
to show visitors a new side to
Swedish cuisine.
The New Nordic Kitchen
has been popular, but we tried
something different, Bjrn says.
At the event dinner, guests
could walk through a forest,
picking berries a nod to
allemansrtten (the freedom to
roam), enshrined in the Swedish
constitution. Guests could also
plant seeds before dining, and
after dessert, see how some tasty
ingredient had sprouted.
And those Northern Lights?
What do they actually taste of?
Birch leaves, says Bjrn.
Theyre green like the aurora,
and can be turned into a
sparklingly acidic sorbet.
A nice red-grapefruit granita
works well, too, he adds.
Its bitter, like the cold.

The Greatest

his is it. The road that

affords any car lover
serious bragging rights.
The Transfagarasan Highway is
a 90km-long mountain pass with
precipitous drops, complicated
bends, long fast straights, steep
curves and spectacular views.
Its a challenge that would
have even F1s Sebastian Vettel
gripping on to his steering wheel
for dear life.
Created in the early 1970s
on the orders of Communist
leader Nicolae Ceausescu, the
highway was originally meant
to provide a speedy route for
troops and tanks across the
rugged Carparthian Mountains,
in case the Soviet army made
moves to invade. Each day, for
four years, soldiers used 6,000
tonnes of dynamite over five
explosions to blast out 3.8m
cubic metres of earth from the
Fagaras Mountains north face.
Happily, as the invasion never
happened, although just how
a Romanian TR-85 tank would
have negotiated those hairpin
bends remains a mystery.
The most dramatic stretch is
on the Sibiu side, heading south,
where youll pass the glittering,
glacial Blea Lake. From here
the twists and turns are enough
to give anyone a headache,
but once youve conquered
this road were sure youll feel
as invincible as a Romanian
dictator in his heyday.
The Transfagarasan Road,
40km from Sibiu, is open from
1 July31 October only, when
the route is expected to be free
of snow.

Our Top 5:
Larnaca

n the south-east coast

of Cyprus, Larnaca is
sometimes bypassed
by holidaymakers who see it
as a mere entry point for the
island, yet this charming seaside
resort has plenty to offer. Full of
character, it is one of Cypruss
oldest and most diverse towns.
We suggest strolling along the
main promenade, exploring
the maze of streets in the old
Turkish quarter and haggling for
souvenirs in the old market area,
before you try out these five fun
things to see and do.

1. A33 Grill & Meze

Its simple yet beautifully cooked
Cypriot cuisine has been a talking
point since its opening last year.
Start off with a selection of meze
dishes halloumi, hummus
and salads before tucking
into the mains; huge chunks of
succulent steak, zingy pasta
dishes, traditional souvlaki plates
or more unusual offerings such
as the Caribbean chicken. In
the evening, book a table in the
garden, with fairy lights wound
around the branches of the fruit
trees. 33 Aigyptou Street

2. Pattichion Amphitheatre
Located in the middle of a large
park in the west of the city, this
open-air amphitheatre seats
2,100. Built in 1980, it was
named after Nicos and Despina
Pattichi, locals who devoted
their time to promoting arts and
culture in the city. It is open
from May to October, but the
best time to visit is in July, when
the Larnaca Festival is in full
swing. Expect a roster of dance,
theatre, music and poetry from
national and international talent.

3. Oro Fino Jewellery

Cyprus is famous for its
handcrafted souvenirs, but
its also home to a number
of skilled jewellers who
specialise in silver and copper
accessories. Oro Fino, run by
local designer Dimitra Klouni,
is one of our favourites. Browse

The thumping nightlife of Ayia
Napa may be a few miles
away, but Larnaca offers
plenty of scope for partying.
Cosmopolitan, with its prime
location on buzzy Phinikoudes

spring, and its where the citys
coolest crowd hang out. Sip

5. Larnaca Fort
The original Byzantine fort was
built around the late 12th
century, but 200 years later
it was upscaled to protect
Larnaca's harbour. During World
War I, the stone castle was
occupied by the Germans and
used as a military outpost until
1918, when it was reclaimed by
the British and converted into
a prison. Today its a museum
with an open-air theatre in the
courtyard and, as of this year, it's
now open during the weekend,
too. Entry 1.70, Athens Avenue

Island Chic
Cretes coolest hotel turns hospitality into an art form

Minos Beach Art Hotel, Crete

Nowadays, art hotels are two-apenny, and often come across
as forced or gimmicky, with
insufficient space to show off
their art collection. Thankfully,
there are no such tendencies at
Minos Beach, in the mid-sized
resort of Agios Nikolaos. This
hip hotel rightly prides itself on
its cool and kooky sculptures,

there are 45 dotted throughout

its gardens and private beaches.
Our favourites included the
spiral staircase leading nowhere;
the large, azure rippling sail
sculpture; the clothes line
punctuated with pottery garments
and the wicker man about to toss
a caber. Oh, not forgetting the
giant stone bull the symbol of
Crete at the entrance.

Yet the art inevitably comes

second to the hotels expansive
grounds on Mirabello Bay.
Accommodation takes the form
of distinctive, white-washed
bungalows along the seafront,
from which you can access private
beaches with beach loungers
and parasols. Not content with
a large swimming pool, spa and
three superb restaurants, there

are spectacular gardens with

hibiscus, palm trees, olive trees,
sweetly scented rose bushes
and lily ponds. Opened in 1961,
famous guests have included
Walt Disney, Johnny Holiday and
Prince Andrew. All would have
most likely opted for a bungalow
with a private, pine-shaded pool
and views of the Mediterranean.

The mini-drome racing events brought us

together. We started out as competitors, but now
our main aim is to promote xed gear cycling

I remember when I was a kid in

the 80s, I was so excited when
my first BMX magazine finally arrived from
overseas, says Varis Auzi, co-founder
of Rigas Open Bikes (openbikes.org). An
organisation that promotes a do-it-yourself
approach to bicycle ownership, it opened in
the Latvian capital last year. Back then, we
couldnt buy those kinds of bikes here, so
we brought the photos to the local kolkhoz
[Soviet collective farm] and asked the
mechanics and welders to help us build one.
How times have changed. Today Riga is
fast becoming one of the hippest cycling
destinations in the Europe partly because
its so easy to get around on two wheels (its

a breeze gliding round its spacious medieval

squares and tree-lined boulevards), but also
because more residents have chosen to travel
by bike since the economic downturn.
The recent interest in cycling has been a
blessing for entrepreneurs such as Varis. A
couple of years ago he received a grant from
the US Embassy in Latvia to open a workshop
where cyclists can use a number of specialised
tools free of charge to fix their bikes. He and
his partners also erected a bicycle repair
station and air pump in the city centre and,
to ensure that their activities are sustainable
and not reliant on grant money, theyve
engaged in a number of partnerships with
local business, and sell upcycled jewellery

made from bicycle parts online, too. I love

the fact that a bike made on the other side
of the planet finds its way to Latvia and is
used here until it falls apart. Then we create
something completely new from it, using
the proceeds to support our own goals, says
Varis, who rides off from our lunch meeting
on a fixed gear two-wheeler that probably
costs more than my first car.
If you arent au fait with urban cycling,
you may ask: whats a fixed gear bicycle?
Well, it is as simple as it sounds, a bike with
only one gear ideal for cruising around flat
city streets and very popular with young
urban cyclists. In fact, it seems that even
brakes are optional these days. Outlawed in

many EU countries but not this one you

can spot many of Rigas youngsters with
their feet off the pedals, willing their fixies
to stop. If youd like to see what all the fuss
is about, just take a look at the kids who
tend to congregate next to the Freedom
Monument, one of the nations most moving
symbols of its long struggle for independence.
Hristina atalova is one of the three
founders of SHE FIX (shefix.org), which
champions the citys cool cycling women.
Were a group of enthusiastic girls who love
what we do. Its a platform for girls to explore
their powers and share their interests. What
started as rivalry at the citys mini velodrome
soon became cooperation. The mini-drome

racing events brought us together. We

started out as competitors, but then
we got to know each other and last year
we started the SHE FIX project. Our main
aim is to encourage society to lead active
and healthy lifestyles and, of course, to
promote fixed gear cycling.
For bicycle designer and restorer Toms
renpreiss, cycling is in his blood. His great
grandfathers brother Gustavs renpreiss
founded a bicycle company of the same name
in the 1920s. His creations quickly became
the benchmark for quality two-wheelers in
the Baltics, but after World War II the factory
was nationalised by the Soviets. In 2006,

really made for the city, so I started to revive
classic city bike culture.
Today hes moved onto manufacturing
his own line of renpreiss bicycles
(erenpreiss.com) which are sold at exclusive
shops in Riga, Stockholm, London and
even Singapore. He also helps organise the
citys annual Tweed Run every May, when
hundreds of cycling enthusiasts dress up in

we had similar events, but we were inspired
by the boys in London, so we started our own

Since we were kids we were always into bikes

we teamed up to do something that no one

When I asked him about the cafs

admits that it was a coincidence. At first

we didnt even offer food. Then we found an
incredible chef who happened to be
a vegetarian, but he said that he wouldnt
cook meat. He said take it or leave it, so
here we are. He laughs and adds, In the
end it worked out well, because there
werent many authentic vegetarian
restaurants in the area, and cycling and a
healthy food are a natural combination.
MiiT also specialises in gourmet coffee and
when asked about the cafs slogan coffee

the football tournament in attendance

Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Bosnia has only had its own national

it only became independent in 1995.
For the Dragons the nickname of the
Bosnian team reaching the World Cup

This is the first time that Bosnians

1995, said Miroslav iro Blazevic
who, as the teams previous manager,
led them to a play-off tie for the last
World Cup in 2010. Currently coach
of Sloboda Tuzla, Blazevic is famously
known for taking the then newly

of their debut World Cup in 1998.
The Bosnian people have waited
a long time for this, enthused iro.
They deserve every success.
Even qualifying has been a great

HARIS MEDUNJANIN
CELEBRATES SCORING A
GOAL AGAINST SLOVAKIA

Tuzla-born Damir Mulaomerovic, a retired

basketball player who made his name at
Real Madrid and Olympiacos in Greece
and as a former Euroleague championship
winner remains a local sporting luminary.
There should be a really positive
atmosphere around the matches, everyone
will be watching the games on a big screen.
It was last October, before a 6,000strong crowd comprising many Bosnian
supporters whod made the long journey
to Kaunas, Lithuania, that a solitary
goal by Bundesliga star Vedad Ibievi
gave Bosnia all three qualifying-group
points and a passage to Brazil. Overcome
with emotion and the enormity of their
achievement, players and coaches
celebrated in tears on the touchline.
Yet the mood was soon marred by
tragedy. Returning home through northeastern Poland, three Bosnian fans were
killed in a car crash caused by fog. In a
gesture of solidarity and passion for their
national team, the funeral was attended
by as many as 14,000, including national
team captain Emir Spahi and the Prime

and football team have

for this. They deserve
every success
Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nermin
Niki. Before the teams next match, a friendly
against Argentina, a minutes silence was held.
In that match 20-year-old defender Sead
Kolainac, who had previously excelled
at all youth levels for Germany, made his
debut. Many in the Bosnian team have strong
connections with Germany. Manchester City
star forward Edin Deko, who provided the
pass for the winning goal in Lithuania, was
born there and made his name at Wolfsburg,
while Ibievi came to the fore at Hoffenheim.
Along with midfielders such as Miralem
Pjani in Luxembourg and Haris Medunjanin
in the Netherlands, these are sons of families
who fled the conflict of the 1990s, and had

to play their way up through the ranks in

their adopted countries. Many had lost
close family members back home; Pjani
his father, while Sarajevo-born Deko
spent four years of his boyhood in a small
flat in which 15 relatives lived out the war.
Today Deko is an ambassador for UNICEF
and regularly visits schools in Bosnia.
The war of the 1990s broke up
Yugoslavia and, of course, its national
football team. One of only four European
countries to take the steamship to Uruguay
for the rst World Cup of 1930, Yugoslavia
had a proud tradition at the tournament.
Key Bosnian players included Josip
Katalinski and Duan Bajevi, who helped
knock out Scotland in Germany in 1974.
Yet after 1990, Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia
players would never again line up for the
same national team at a World Cup nal.
While a post-war, independent
Bosnia was slowly working its way up
from humanitarian friendlies to full
FIFA status in the mid 1990s, Safet
Sui was carving out a successful
managerial career in Turkey. In 2009,

It is a different kind of

he took over from iro Blazevic as the
national coach of Bosnia.
It will be Sui who will be leading
Bosnia in Brazil. Their first game could
scarcely be more high profile, taking on
Lionel Messis Argentina at the Maracana
Stadium on 15 June.
It is a different kind of responsibility,
taking a national team to its rst World Cup,
reflected Blazevic. You have to prepare
everyone mentally. You have to think you can
surprise at least one team and get through the
group stage to the knock-out round.
There should be something happening
every night, predicted Salko Delic, who
helps run the Zlatnik restaurant (restoranzlatnik.com) in Tuzlas city centre. We
will have a special menu for each match,
and everyone will be wearing hats, shirts,
scarves, and so on.
Tuzla was the setting for the start
of recent political demonstrations,
the so-called Bosnian Spring. People
have stopped talking about politics,
said Delic. The World Cup is now what
everyones talking about. As a citizen of
Tuzla, Ive been waiting 20 years for this
to happen, and now it finally has. Ill be
watching it on TV unless I win tickets in
the lottery!
If Bosnia do overcome Argentina,
Iran and Nigeria and get through, they
are likely to face France or Switzerland,
difficult but not impossible opponents.
Back in Tuzla, Blazevic may well
remember how his Croatian side overcame
Romania and Germany to reach the final
four in 1998. We will be supporting Sui
and his men all the way, he said. It will
be a great party in Tuzla with beer and
music, everyone behind the side. And for
everyones whos going, I can only wish
them a happy and safe journey. The old
wolf iro will be backing them 100%.

We speak to five vendors who are championing the centuries-old

street food tradition in Naples, Italys capital of cheap eats
Words by Isobel Lee / Photography by Susan Wright

hough Naples is famed for the richness of its

cuisine, some of its quintessential treats are best
consumed in a heartbeat at kiosks, on bustling
street corners or snatched from open windows.
Port towns are always associated with street food
because theyre 24-hour cities, explains baker Vincenzo
Travaglione. Dock workers and sailors need to grab a bite
to eat before the boat leaves again, so a culture of street
food thrives around them.
In Napoli, former garden city to the Roman Empire, the
tradition of itinerant food vendors precedes even that.
The nomadic tribes that descended from the mountains
and hills peddled snacks in ancient Neapolis and Pompeii,

the latters kiosks and stalls later preserved in ash after

Vesuvius erupted. Flour and water biscuits, or taralli, were
sold from baskets alongside boiled entrails and an early
form of the pizza. Desserts such as crispy sfogliatelle,
filled with ricotta, can be traced back to temple offerings
fashioned for the Vestal Virgins.
Today, fast food be it pizza, lemon juice, biscuits or ice
cream is a major part of life here. Its a way of binding up
tradition and culture in greaseproof paper and selling it
on the streets. Refined over hundreds of years, the recipes
represent slow-simmered slices of history, although most
of them take less than three minutes to eat. We meet five
street food vendors and sample their delicious cuisine.

ANTONIO TOMMASINO
Pizzeria Bellini

While pizza is synonymous with Naples, not

everyone knows that it originated as street
food, folded into quarters and eaten on the go.
It is known as pizza al portafoglio, because
the folded version resembles a wallet. Antonio
Tommasino continues the tradition at Pizzeria
Bellini, opened by his parents in 1946.
The folded pizzas are slightly smaller than
the ones you eat inside the restaurant. We keep
the toppings simple margherita (cheese and
tomato) and marinara (tomato and anchovy),
says Antonio, who runs Bellini with his two
brothers. Inside, for customers sitting down
to eat, full-sized pizzas and pasta steam under
photos of the restaurants celebrity clientele,
from Soa Loren to Giorgio Armani.
Another dish here is the fried pizza. While
the name conjures up visions of a caloric
lump of batter, its actually a disc made from
two wafer-thin sheets of pizza dough stuffed
with cheese and vegetables, fried briefly in hot
oil so it puffs up like a flying saucer. The classic
version is lled with cheese, tomato and basil.

MARCO MONACELLI
La Gelateria della Scimmia

My grandfather was a familiar sight in

1920s Naples, selling ice cream from his cart
with a monkey on his shoulder, says Marco
Monacelli. In 1933, he was the rst ice-cream
man in the city to open a shop.
La Gelateria della Scimmia the Monkeys
Ice-Cream Parlour still stands today in
Piazza Carit, with the sign of the monkey
over the door. The ice cream is completely
natural, made from local fresh fruit and
cream, says Marco. Distinguished by muted
colours and a creamy taste, classic flavours
include tiramisu, pistacchio, stracciatella
(cream cheese) and fragola (strawberry).
In the past, there were no disposable cups
or cones, so you had to eat out of a glass on the
spot. My grandfather fashioned little ice-cream
blocks book-ended with wafers, so people
could take them away. We still sell those. Our
other vintage ice creams include the conchiglia;
frozen cream covered in a dark-chocolate
scallop shell, or the monkeys favourite: pureed
banana ice cream moulded into a fruit shape
with a crisp shell of dark chocolate.

La Banca dellAcqua

Built into a recess of the San Ferdinando

church, there has been a refreshments stand
on this spot in Piazza Trieste e Trento for 180
years. Antonio Guerra has only been here
since the 1970s, when his mother acquired the
business. Selling cold mineral water and lemon
juice, Antonio is an acquaiolo (waterman), part
of a centuries-old itinerant tradition.
Water-sellers would walk from town to
town with great flasks on their back. They
would bring water from Santa Lucia, along
the coast, from a spring rich in sulphur. They
would mix this with a squeeze of lemon juice,
using the famous, local Sorrento lemons.
Two centuries ago, they ceased wandering,
preferring to serve refreshments from xed
stands in squares and on street corners, known
as banche dellacqua, or water banks.
Its just freshly squeezed lemon juice,
mineral water, and, if you like, a pinch of
bicarbonate of soda to make it fizz, says
Antonio. I like to add a thimble of lemon
granita, crushed ice and sweetened lemon
juice, to make it extra cool.

SALVATORE CAPPARELLI
Patisserie Capriccio

When you stroll Via Tribunali, you

cant miss the patisseries adorned with
mushroom-shaped bab, one of Naples most
characteristic desserts; a soft, leavened sponge
doused in a sweet syrup made from rum.
It was invented by the Polish King Stanisaw
Leszczyski in the 1700s, says Salvatore
Capparelli. Legend cant decide whether he
threw a cake in a t of rage at a bottle of rum
which smashed, or his chef mixed Tokaj wine
and liquor to soften an ageing sponge. French
chefs brought the dessert to Naples, where it
evolved into the soft, syrupy delight of today.
Salvatore has won awards for his fluffy
bab and sfogliatella. The sfogliatella frolla
is a soft pebble of pastry filled with sweet
ricotta, while the sfogliatella riccia is a
triangle of crisp, flaky pastry oozing with
sweetened ricotta and diced candied peel.
Triangular sweets filled with ricotta were
found in pagan temples over 2,000 years old,
says Salvatore. They were made by young
brides who came to pray to the Vestal Virgins.
That evolved into the dessert we make today.

VINCENZO TRAVAGLIONE
Antico Pani cio Coppola

An aroma of freshly baked goods wafts from

the Antico Panicio Coppola. Though Vincenzo
Travaglione has been in charge here only a year,
the family business goes back 50 years.
My uncle, Giuseppe Coppola, established
the bakery in 1962, says Vincenzo. These
days I run it with my brother, Dario. We bake
fresh bread and street food creations all day.
In a great glass case at the front of the shop
are mounds of freshly baked taralli; twisted
traditional flour and water biscuits. While
variations can be found over southern Italy,
Vincenzo argues that the Neapolitan version
is best. Made with lard, black pepper and
toasted almonds from Puglia, they have a bit of
a kick to them, he says. Traditionally, these
would have been sold in baskets by itinerant
sellers, and you still find them at kiosks along
the coast. Also popular is a slice of pizza
rustica, a savoury pie filled with cheese and
ham, and pastiera, a baked ricotta cake.

says Gina Panopoulou cheerfully as

Its 9pm and, by now, its pitch black outside.
Were on top of the 1,750m-high Mount

daylight was tricky, to say the least. Yes,
the stars above us are brighter than Ive ever
witnessed before, twinkling like diamonds
against the coal black sky, but I doubt theyll
provide enough illumination to navigate
my way down the rocky, dusty, steep and
frankly perilous track to the main road.
But Skinakas is a research observatory, the

Gina has been kind enough to meet me and

work, she says. Studies of dust in far away
galaxies and high-mass X-ray binaries
[binary stars with electromagnetic radiation].
And last year, for example, we observed

stars are born.
But its not all highly scientific work
here. Skinakas has public observation days

stargazers about the wonder of the cosmos.
On an open night, visitors can see the most
impressive bright targets, from planets
such as Jupiter and Mars, to planetary
nebulae [the remains of dying stars]
such as the Ring Nebula and the M13 star
cluster. Observatory staff and professors
also show and describe the visible
constellations by tracing them star-by-star
with a simple laser pointer on the outside
of the dome, says Gina. Our open nights
are very popular sometimes we have
hundreds of people at a time!
But, I am not here on here on one of
Skinakass open days, and as I leave, I cant
turn on my car lights for fear of ruining Gina
and the teams chances of discovering some
exotic globular star cluster, nebula or a planet
in a distant galaxy, so I very gingerly drive
down the steep dirt track until I hit Tarmac.
Humans have been fascinated by the night
sky for millennia, but it was the ancient
Greeks who are credited with putting a name
to celestial objects. The term planet comes
from the ancient Greek word plants,
which loosely translates as wanderer.
The five spots of light they noticed moving
across the sky turned out to be, of course,
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
The Greeks also named many of the
constellations we know today. Minos is,
appropriately enough, named after the
mythical bull from the island of Crete.
Belgian Filip Feys, a keen astromoner
since the age of eight, moved to Crete in
2008. When I was younger, every spare
moment I had would be spent outside,
staring into the sky, he recalls. I started
to collect as many telescopes as I could,
all different sizes for observing different
objects. As I got older, I decided I wanted
to live in a place that had as many clear
night skies in a year as possible. Shortly
after moving to the Greek island, he
transformed his beautiful home in Lassithi,
a couple of hours drive from Heraklion, into
an observatory. What did his wife think about
welcoming fellow stargazers into her home?
Chantal didnt mind, he laughs. She almost
loves stargazing as much as me!

Whenever I pop into the village,

the locals bombard me with
questions about the night sky
But what about the locals? On the terrace
of Filip and Chantals rural home/observatory,
there are four gigantic telescopes (they
own eight in total, with prices ranging from
1,500 to 20,000). For the residents of this
sleepy village, it must be quite an unusual
sight. They love it, he replies. Ive had
quite a few visit the observatory, even some
who are 90 years old. Whenever I pop into
the village, they bombard me with questions
about the night sky. And what of the local
authorities? They had no problems, Filip
tells me. However, they werent sure how to
classify the business at first, so they wrote it
down as astrology, not astronomy!
I look through the Filips 0.5m Newtonian
telescope. This one is used for the deep
sky, he says. It cost me 20,000.
Deep sky, he informs me, refers to objects
outside our solar system. Through this
telescope we can see galaxies that are
millions of light years away; planetary
nebulas, huge nebulas where stars are
born and dying red giants that will soon
become supernovas. I spot a globular
star cluster, with more than 100,000 stars

twisted together in a sphere. It looks

more like a big city from space, doesnt it?
I ask him which big cosmological events have
made the biggest impact on him in the last few
years. The transit of Venus in front of the sun
in 2012 was phenomenal, as was the total lunar
eclipse in August 2007, which lasted for 90
minutes. You could see these spectacular dark
red colours on the surface of the Moon. Filip
tells me that there are some great skywatching
events due this summer, including 17-18 August,
when the two brightest planets in our sky, Venus
and Jupiter, will look incredibly close. And on
19 October, a comet will pass very close to Mars.
Theres a one in 2,000 chance it might strike it.
But even if it doesnt, there will be a spectacular
meteor shower. Witnessing moments like this
through a telescope is not easily forgotten.

BEACHES

FOR THE WOW FACTOR

Shipwreck Beach
Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach on the Greek
Island of Zakynthos might just be one of the
most spectacular beaches in the world, never
mind Europe. It takes its name from the
Panagiotis, a 163m-long ship that ran aground
in 1980, allegedly after being chased by the
Greek Navy for carrying contraband cigarettes
and alcohol. Locals headed out to the shallow
cove to raid its cargo which, it is said, proved
so plentiful that illegal cigarettes were sold on
Zakynthos for the next four years! Of course,
this merely adds to this postcard-perfect
beachs appeal. Rhiannan Douglas, from
Glasgow, says: With its crystal-clear water,
white sand and smooth white pebbles, this
hidden cove is my favourite beach in the
world. The story of the pirate shipwreck
makes it even more exciting!

FOR COOL DRINKS

PuroBeach
My favourite beach bar has to be PuroBeach
in Mallorca, says Julia Holmes from London.
Its so cool and glamorous. Just remember to
wear your best bikini! Heres Julias top three
tips for blending in:
Order the right drink: The cocktail list
here is mighty impressive. Id say choose one
of the signature Puro Style Cocktails my
pick is the Lemongrass Collins: citronella
flavoured vodka muddled with Licor 43, lime
juice and ginger ale. It costs just 13.
And relax: While sprawled out on one of
PuroBeachs 90 plush sunbeds, you can enjoy
a deep tissue massage, aromatherapy massage
or reflexology treatment. Bliss!
Arrive in style: Travel to one of the worlds
best beach bars by car? As if. Put these
coordinates into your boats sat nav system:
N 39320046/E 2424173. You can moor
your yacht directly next to PuroBeach.

BEACHES

FOR A TASTE OF THE SEA

Hive Beach Caf
Food tastes better at the beach: fact.
Especially when it comes to fish. And when
the sun is shining you wont find a better
table than at the delightfully informal Hive
Beach Caf (hivebeachcafe.co.uk) in Dorset.
I first ate at the Hive Beach Caf with friends
last summer on a day trip from London,
says Joanna Sliwa from Katowice. I ordered
crab mayonnaise and then grilled Cornish
sardines. The fish was so fresh! Afterwards,
my boyfriend and I sunbathed on the pebble
beach all afternoon. I hope to go back
again this summer.

FOR FAMILY FUN TIMES

Batumi
Batumi, on the Black Sea coast, is Georgias
summertime playground. Surrounded by the
Black Sea on one side and green hills on the
other, Batumi is, simply, beautiful and its
great for families, says Vladimir Lagidze, a
Georgian who now lives in Kyiv. Here youll
find the Batumi Dolphinarium where you
can swim with dolphins and a water park
(which opened in 2008) with five swimming
pools. Theres also a brilliant amusement
park, Tsitsinatela or Firefly, in Kobuleti.
The Batumi Aquarium opens next summer in
the port area. The beach itself offers its fair
share of watersports, but if you fancy a stroll:
I love to walk along the Batumis Bulvari,
theres so much to see and do, says Vladimir.
And the sunsets from here are very special.

FOR PARTYING HARD

Tisno Beach
WIZZ editor Claire Martin says: Its hard to
imagine a more idyllic setting for a summer of
partying than Tisno Beach, near Split. Here are
Claires top three festivals at Tisno to party till
dawn with the sand between your toes:
1. Garden Festival: Electro event Garden
Festival is gearing up to its ninth instalment.
With non-stop DJs seven days and nights, this
years line-up includes Crazy P Soundsystem,
Genius of Time and Session Victim. Dont
miss the floating boat parties. 2-9 July.

2. Soundwave: Soundwave moved to
Tisno on the Dalmatian coast six years ago.
The line-up for this years dance event is
stellar: dance hits from Mr Scruff, electronica
from Gold Panda and, new this year, reggae
beats from Fat Freddys Drop. 17-21 July.
soundwavecroatia.com
3. SuncBeat: With deep house, soul,
disco, funk and groove, SuncBeat is Tisnos
smoothest event. DJ Gilles Peterson, electronic
soul-star Kerri Chandler and legendary jazz
artist Lonnie Liston Smith are all set to grace
the stage. 23-30 July. suncebeat.com

FOR MAGICAL SUNSETS

Santorini
The tiny Greek island of Santorini curves
round a caldera a crater island created by
a gigantic volcanic explosions. Its dramatic
scenery helps make it one of the most
beautiful spots for sunsets in Europe. And
witnessing it rst hand, we have to agree
when the glimmering golden sun slips below
the horizon, an orange glow dances on the
islands famous white cliffs and whitewashed
buildings. The small village of Oia has the best
sunsets. Head to one of the restaurants with a
roof garden, order a Mythos beer and enjoy,
says Alex Otto from Riga.

BEACHES

FOR FALLING IN LOVE

Petra tou Romiou
Looming out of the water, just off the craggy
coastline on the south-west of side of Cyprus,
is Petra tou Romiou better known as
Aphrodites Rock. According to myth, this
beach is the birthplace of Aphrodite, who rose
from the sea to become the Greek Goddess of
Love. Swim round her rock three times and
youll be blessed with beauty and everlasting
love, they say. This sandy cove is a popular
spot for weddings. My husband Jim and I
married on Aphrodites Beach in 2010, says
Louise Walker from Glasgow. It was the most
magical day. We try and go back there on our
anniversary, 24 May, each year to celebrate.

FOR TRUE ESCAPISM

Hel
Now, if we told you to go to Hel for a
beach holiday, you might initially think
we were being a little bit rude. But the
Hel peninsula, some 33km from the
mainland, is home to some of Eastern
Europes most beautiful beaches. My
favourite beach in Hel is Wladysawowo, says
Piotr Chojnacki. Ive been going there since
2010. Climb to the top of the Town Halls
tower and youll see the curve of Hels white
sandy beaches stretch right along the
coastline. Wladysawowo is the liveliest
town on the peninsula while Kashubia,
located at the end, is blissfully remote.

FOR RIDING WAVES

Sunny Beach
The waves arent going to rival Hawaii or
Bondi Beach, but Sunny Beach, Bulgarias
biggest and best beach resort, earns
Liliana Antovs nomination for frolicsome
watersports. I come here every summer. I
like surfing generally, but the kite surfing is
the best. Its easy to hire equipment and the
instructors are very friendly. You can also
waterski, wind surf, or just lie on the beach,
she says. And after dark, Sunny Beach has
a reputation for being one of the Black Sea
coasts wildest party destinations. I love to
go to Cacao Beach Club. They always host
massive parties with big-name DJs.

FOR URBAN OUTFITTERS

Tel Aviv
You may have read something about Tel
Avivs beautiful beaches in this magazine
before, but thats because we genuinely
think that this is the best beach city in the
world. And were not alone regular Wizz Air
passenger Agnieszka Nowak from Warsaw
agrees. I love how it's very close to the city's
busiest part, but not a part of the city itself,
she says. Only palm trees separate urban
sprawl from sandy beach. You see suited
office walkers head out at lunchtime,
change into wetsuits and then spend 30
minutes on surfboards. Here, you dont
need a plan; just start the day at the beach
and then see what happens. You can surf,
enjoy a picnic, sunbathe or swim. You can
play matkot, its like game of pit-pat, and
everyone plays it here, says Agnieszka.
I even saw someone learning how to walk
the tightrope on the beach here! And at night
you can party in Neve Tzedek district. I
went there with three of my girlfriends, in
November 2013. It felt amazing, like summer
I cant imagine how awesome the beach
must be when summer actually arrives!

THE NEX T EUROPE AN

CAPITAL OF CULTURE?
Festivals, history and unforgettable natural environments look set to earn
Craiova and the entire Oltenia region European recognition

his spring, the Romanian city of Craiova will host the

T International William Shakespeare Festival, one of the most
prestigious theatre events in the world. And this forms just
part of the cultural programme planned for the years ahead, with
the city aiming to become the 2021 European Capital of Culture on
behalf of the whole of the Oltenia region, supported by the counties
of Gorj, Dolj, Valcea, Olt and Mehedinti.
Back in 1770, Craiova was the capital of Tara Romaneasca; its
fascinating collection of monuments and architectural gems a legacy
of its ability to attract many of the countrys wealthiest noblemen.
It continued to do so for centuries even during World War II, one
of the citys inhabitants could afford to lend money to the French
government, while his house sheltered the exiled Polish parliament.
Craiova is also home to the largest natural park in Central and
Eastern Europe, of which the plans were awarded the gold medal
at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris. Its museums house the
worlds largest collection of Brancusi works, as well as a 30,000year-old female skull that proves that one of the oldest known
human settlements was located in the area.

contribution to the Allied victory in World War II. It was also
the birthplace of Nicolae Vasilescu Karpen, the inventor of the
Karpen Pile, which has now provided a continuous supply of
energy for over 60 years.
Across the entire Oltenia region, visitors will find a priceless
combination of tradition, great monuments and natural wonders
that has helped make Craiova a serious candidate for the title of
European Capital of Culture.
Many of these can be found in Gorj County, which is known for

Meanwhile, Mehedinti County boasts some of the most
dramatic nature in Europe, where wild horses still roam
the forests. Here, you will find the statue of Decebalus the
tallest rock sculpture in Europe plus a wonderful Medieval
fortress and Apollodorus of Damascuss bridge in Drobeta

Valcea County, on the other hand, is best-known for its
chain of mountain resorts and the Horezu ceramics that
form an important part of Oltenian heritage. In Olt County,
visitors will discover 7,000-plus-year-old Vadastra pottery
and the ancient fortress of Sucidava. While, in Dolj County,
they will find the Cetate cultural harbour and, obviously,
Craiova the future European Capital of Culture.

voivodes reigned and struggled to keep the
integrity of the national spirit. One of them was
the legendary Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler),
who built what remains the symbol of the
town: the Tower of Chindia. A great warrior
and defender of the Christianity, Tepes left
us the legend of Dracula, one of Romania and

Targovistes most famous figures. As capital of

Wallachia, the city was the centre of economic,

THE SPHINX OF BUCEGI

For a better preservation of the natural

environment and its biodiversity, the Bucegi
Mountains have been included in the Bucegi
Nature Reservation, where you will find its two
famous natural monuments, the Babele and the
Sphinx of Bucegi.
According to unofficial sources, the Sphinx
of Bucegi was photographed for the first time
in 1900 and given its name in 1936. The rock
is situated at an altitude of 2,216m, measures
8m by 12m and resembles a human face. Some
researchers believe that it was carved by human
hand and it would represent a supreme deity of
some ancient Indo-European tribes.
Close by, near the Baba Mare Peak
(2,292m), there is a group of rock formations
that look like stone mushrooms and are

Judetul DambovitaV2.indd 12

known as the Babele (the Old Ladies).

Their genesis has been the subject of many
legends and theories. Some researchers
believe that water and wind, together with
frosting and defrosting processes were the
moulding agents here. At the same time,
an important factor appears to have been
the alternation of rocks, grit stones and
limestones on the Bucegi Plateau, but no one
could deny either the human intervention in
finishing the shapes. Up to now, no scientific
evidence could offer a complete explanation
of this phenomenon, therefore the legends
surrounding these rocks are still developing,
uniting the reality and the supernatural.

wouldnt be complete without a visit to
the historic province of Vrancea. While it is famed
for its beautiful vineyards, skilled wine tasters
and hundred-year-old methods, the province, just
200km from the Henri Coanda airport, also has a
history of epic battles and legends to enjoy too.
As legend has it, the name Vrancea comes
from a Baba Vrncioaia, the mother of seven
handsome and brave sons. Baba Vrncioaia sent
these seven to fight alongside the Moldavian
ruler Stephen the Great in one of the wars
against the Turks. As a reward for their bravery
in battle, the seven sons were offered the seven
mountains with the desire to create a land
named Vrancea.
The battleground for many Romanian leaders,
Vrancea also marks an important moment in
World War I. It was here that the historic battles
of 1917 were fought, ultimately leading to the
great battle and defeat of the German troops
on 6 August. On this date Romania remembers
with pride the heroism of the soldiers who fell,
shouting: You shall not pass!
Four mausoleums were built to honour
the soldiers who fell during the war. Most
notably the majestic and imposing Mreti
Mausoleum, which was protected by Hitler when
Allied boming threatened to destroy it. A visit to
Mreti, Mrti, Soveja or Focsani is a must if
you want to immerse yourself in the history.

VranceaS.indd 12

Vrancea is filled with scenic landscapes;

choose from the Putna waterfall in the
protected Natural Park and the beautiful
Tisita Gorge Nature Reserve. Another
landmark not to be missed is the live fire
at the edge of the forest road of Strmba;
a constant natural gas emanation that
maintains a continuous flame.
Visitors to Vrancea can watch sculpture
workshops or join in the smaller individual
groups to see the incredible craftsmen work
to fabricate masks, or look around the trout
farm, the monastery in Lepa or the House
of Baba Vrncioaia, a memorial house for the
provinces namesake.
Be sure to visit in mid-October when
Vrancea holds its annual Bachus International
Festival of Vine and Wine, now in its 22nd year.
The vineyards in Vrancea are at their most
beautiful in autumn as they begin picking the
grapes. You are invited to taste some of the

famous vineyards.

THE FAMILY
THAT RULED
Picturesque castles, ancient monasteries, and
symbolic gestures of love beyond death the
noble Krolyi family from Satu Mare had it all
he municipality of Carei, located in the Western part of
Satu Mare County, was once a quaint settlement. With a few
streets, peasants houses made of adobe and covered with
thatched roofs, it was built around the domain of the noble Krolyi
family and the Vaday domain.
Today the town has became a beautiful travel destination, the main
attraction being the architectural masterpiece that is Karolyi Castle,
situated in the central park. The initial building was constructed by
King Matei Corvin in 1482 before it was fortified in 1597, acquiring a
bastion and ditch. In 1894, the noble Krolyi family commissioned the
architect Mering Arthur to restore it to the picturesque masterpiece
that can be seen today.
Karolyi Castle currently plays host to the Carei Municipal Museum,
which features both archeology and natural sciences, and offers
the chance to see Neolithic vestiges, Dacian-Roman pieces, as well
as plants and animal fossils, hunting trophies, flora and fauna
from the region, and collections of butterflies and birds eggs. The
Dendrological Park that surrounds the castle is the most important
fauna reservation in the County and contains an incredible 267 exotic
and indigenous trees species.
The interior of the castle is just as impressive; the court of the
old castle was transformed into a magnificent atrium, flanked by
two loggias, complete with a monumental staircase with carved
wood balustrade, a marble fireplace and a ceiling made in painted
wooden boxes.
Karolyi Castle is not the only historic monument to visit during
your travels to Satu Mare. The church in Capleni, one of the biggest
communes of the region and located on the banks of the Crasna
River, is famous for holding the crypt of the Krolyi family. History
states that the church was originally built as a monastery in 1080 and
was served by Benedictine monks. In 1241 it was torched by Tatars,
but soon Kaplony kin, which included the Krolyi family, started its
reconstruction from the ground. From this period it served as the
burial place of their descendants.
During the 15th century, the monastery and the church were
abandoned and reached a deplorable state. Count Krolyi Sndor
restored it in the period 1711 1719.
The church, after suffering a devastating earthquake in 1834, was
again rebuilt according to the designs of famous Budapest architect
Ybl Mikls, with the financial support of Count Gyrgy Krolyi. It is
covered with decorative paintings with floral motifs and the coffins
inside are similarly ornate. The oldest coffins existing in the Karolyi

Gyorgy (1802 1877) being cast from an alloy of silver and copper;
there are currently 36 coffins of the members of the Krolyi family
resting in the church.
An interesting, if not slightly grotesque, detail in the family crypt
is the two cups containing the hearts of the deceased wives of two
men from the Krolyi Family, which are placed above their husbands
coffins in a symbolic gesture of love beyond death.
For a more relaxing experience, the town of Tnad, situated in
the south-west of Satu Mare county, is recognised internationally
for its thermal waters. The Tnad tourist resort, situated 2km away
from the centre of the town, has three outdoor thermal pools and
a cold water pool, as well as wardrobes and cabinets for recovery
massage and reflexology massage.
With a surface temperature of 72C, the water is recommended

BATUMI SEE IT, FEEL IT, LOVE IT

Home to ancient Roman fortresses and folk song, the charming
Georgian city of Batumi is as diverse as it is picturesque
ituated in the south west corner of Georgia, on the shores
of the Black Sea, lies the fascinating city of Batumi.
Steeped in history and ancient traditions, and boasting a
subtropical climate with hot summers and a gloriously warm sea,
Batumi and its exceptionally hospitable people welcome you to
explore the magic.
Bordering Europe and Asia, Georgia is one of the most ancient
countries in the world, and the history of Batumi is notably rich. Its
origin can be traced back to the 4th century BCE where the name
Bathus was first mentioned. The citys varied past since then has
left a lot of architectural diversity. Most notably, the Gonio Fortress
from ancient Roman times, which lies 12 kilometres south of Batumi.
The crumbling remains, comprising perfect stonework, a Roman
bathhouse and fragments of the military barracks, are extraordinary
examples of Georgian craftsmanship.

The beautiful Seaside Boulevard,

at around 7 kilometres, is one of the
longest in the world

Ajara_June.indd 11

The 19th century saw a number of interesting projects

accomplished by European architects throughout the Porto Franco
period. During the soviet and post-soviet times, Batumi was turned
into a popular resort and tourist city, much of which remains
today. The subtropical climate coincides perfectly with the towns
sunny beaches, and the beautiful Seaside Boulevard, at around
7 kilometres, is one of the longest in the world. Batumis vast
appeal, from its delicious cuisine and wine tourism to its authentic
traditions, have already made it a popular destination among locals
and travellers alike.
The authentic Georgian culture that makes a visit so magical has
even been protected by UNESCO. The polyphonic singing that is
prevalent in Georgian folk tradition was inscribed on the Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2008.
Another popular reason for visiting the charming city is the
Batumi Botanical Garden. Currently covering over 1,000 hectares,
it is one of the richest in the world. The garden is home to several
geographical areas, including East Asian, North American, New
Zealand, South American, Himalayan, Mexican, Australian,
Mediterranean (European) and Transcaucasian humid subtropics.

SUMMER GUIDES

BARCELONA Spain
TOUCH DOWN
Barcelona has a 7km stretch of
white sandy beaches all along its
coastline. Head to Barceloneta
(pictured right), the best known
and best loved of the citys sandy
spots. In the fishing district,
theres no shortage of fabulous
seafood restaurants, as well as
beach volleyball courts, a long
promenade and deck chairs for
flopping out under the sun.
GET OUT
Dont miss the Festival Piknic
Electronik, held at Montjuic
every Sunday afternoon
throughout the summer months.
There are fun activities for all
the family, such as skateboarding
workshops for the kids,
hip-hop classes and live music.

EAT WELL
We love burgers. And were
delighted that Barcelona has finally
got onboard with the gourmet
burger trend sweeping Europe. Our
pick of the bunch is La Castanya.
It might not look like much from the
outside, but venture in and youll
find organic lamb, pork and beef
burgers (sourced from Pyrenean
livestock), bright purple beetroot
burgers for the veggies and tapas
dishes (think fried padrn peppers,
spicy sausages and patatas
bravas) too. restaurantes-baresbarcelona.com
DRINK UP
Barcelona has a reputation for
partying, and with good reason.
One of our favourite clubs is the
Ker Club, which only opened a
few months ago. Its dedicated to

funky electronica and sophisticated

cocktails which tends to attract an
over-25s crowd. kerclub.com

BOURGAS Bulgaria
TOUCH DOWN
Summer is here! And, in Bourgas,
anyone who is anyone will be
down at Bourgas Beach. At the
southern end youll find the long

Nearby there are numerous

restaurants and cool bars, as well
as beach shacks that rent out
watersports equipment.
GET OUT
About 35km south of Bourgas
youll find Sozopol (pictured

below). Dating back some

7,000 years, this is one of the most
beautiful and best-preserved Black

and Methodius Church, located
at the gateway to the Old Town,
has some of the regions greatest
archeological finds.
EAT WELL
Cute Caf Roma is one of our
favourite restaurants in Bourgas,
and it has just moved to a new
location on Lazur Boulevard. As
you can glean from the name,
this spot serves up Italian cuisine
think crisp, thin-crust pizzas,
heaving plates of pasta and
fantastic antipasti dishes. On
sunny days, you can dine outside.

During the warmer months, the
best of Bourgass nightlife can be

found down by the beach.

summer theatre, is a great
choice for a warm up and is

The Piazza del Duomo, the main

a UNESCO World Heritage Site
in 1987. Don't miss the beautiful
cathedral at the heart of the piazza,
destroyed many times over the
centuries, most notably in 1669,
by eruptions from nearby volcanic
Mount Etna. The obelisk in the
square is said to have magical
powers that help calm Etnas
activity although were not sure
its doing a very good job.
GET OUT
You cannot miss a trip to Sicilys
most colourful fish market, La
Pescheria. Its held at the southwest
corner of the Piazza del Duomo early
every morning, Monday to Saturday.
Everything from the sea that you

GLIWICE
THE FUTURE IS HERE!
A new entertainment arena, educational pedigree
and modern tourist attractions offer a perfect balance
to Gliwices noted history and traditions

liwice: the city that invests in

modernity without forgetting
tradition. The metropolis in
south-west Poland plans to beautifully
combine its historical Old Town with the latest
technological development.
Located near the countrys Katowice
International Airport in Pyrzowice, the
new Hall of Gliwice will be one of the most
modern and largest events arenas in Poland.
The imposing glass-covered building will
be used for entertainments and sports,
and when finished will be capable of
accommodating about 17,000 people.

GliwiceS.indd 11

The development is just the latest advance

for Gliwices thriving economy; the city is
already home to one of the largest technical
universities, the Silesian University of
Technology, and the soon-to-be-constructed
ring road at the A1 and A4 intersection.
Thanks to these developments and
the work of the prestigious universitys
engineering and technological staff, the city
is now at the cutting edge of modernity. It
has even been likened by experts to a smaller
version of Californias Silicon Valley because
of its investment in the most advanced
technologies.

The Hall of Gliwice is expected to be

completed in the autumn of 2015. While the
impressive structure will function primarily as
a sports hall, it can also be used for nationwide
and international events, from exhibitions and
trade fairs to concerts and film screenings.
In addition to the shining new
developments, the Medieval Old Town of
Gliwice has plenty to offer in the way of
tradition and makes for a picturesque holiday
destination. This charming part of the city
is famed among historians for the stately
tower of the Gliwice Radio Station. Standing

in 1939 to justify the outbreak of war. On

armed SS guards disguised in civilian clothes

claimed these border provocations by the
Poles as his reason for announcing war.

just a frequent visitor to the country,
theres always going to be a few special
attractions that youve never even heard of.
Southern Poland is home to a huge array of
hidden treasures some of them, quite literally,
buried below the ground. These include the
fascinating Oswka Underground City, originally
excavated by German forces during World War II,
and Krakows Galicia Jewish Museum, which
presents a vital look at the history of Polands
Jewish population and the development of its rich
culture. And then theres the beautiful city of
Owicim. Many of you may have already visited
the concentration camp close by, but did you know
the town itself boasts a stunning castle overlooking
a network of winding narrow streets and some
wonderful events all through the year?
All of these can be easily reached when you fly
with Wizz Air to Wrocaw or Katowice, meaning
theres no excuse not to add southern Poland to your
summer vacation plans.

Galicia Jewish Museum

British photojournalist Chris Schwarz established
the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow in 2004. This
unique institution was created to commemorate the
victims of the Holocaust, celebrate the richness of
Jewish history and culture, and to take part in the
revival of Jewish life in present day Poland.
In its 10 years it has become one of Polands most
important Jewish cultural institutions. Through
exhibitions, cultural events and an educational
outreach and community programme, it hopes to
educate both Poles and Jews about their histories
while encouraging them to think about the future.
The museums permanent exhibition is Traces of
Memory, a Contemporary Look at the Jewish Past in
Poland. It also houses three temporary exhibitions,
an education room with a media resource centre and
film archive, as well as a caf and Jewish bookstore.

Oswka Underground City

Hidden below the surface of the Owl Mountains in
Lower Silesia, youll find Oswka Underground City,
an enormous project built between 1943 and 1945 that
remains home to many treasures of the Third Reich and
the dark secrets of World War II.
Prisoners captured by the Germans began work on
a huge system of labyrinths and bunkers in mid-1943
work that remained uncompleted when the area was
evacuated and taken over by Russian forces in February
1945. To date, no official documents related to the project
have been found, but different historians have theorised
that it could have been planned as a secret shelter for
Hitler, underground factories for parts of the V1 and V2
rockets or a large laboratory for building an atomic bomb.
Some locals have reported that the retreating German
army even used it to hide shipments of gold.
Open all year round, the underground and groundlevel parts can be visited with tourist routes led by
English audio guides and guides speaking other
languages upon reservation.

Oswiecim
Welcome to the city of Owicim, where you can enjoy a
pleasant walk along the narrow streets of the Old Town,
or climb the hill to visit a majestic Medieval castle. Today,
the site hosts the Castle Museum, where an interactive
exhibition will help you track the 800-year history of
the city, while the 40m-high tower offers a wonderful
panorama of the surrounding county.
When you walk back down, dont miss your chance to
visit the enchanting Jan Skarbek Square and the recently
renovated synagogue, where you can learn about the
coexistence of Polish and Jewish cultures in Owicim. In
the heart of the city, the Market Square boasts a modern
arrangement, although some trace of the past remains of
the 16th-century town hall and a pre-war well have been
preserved, besides charming 19th-century tenements and
mysterious churches among its winding streets.
For those with an interest in nature, the citys just a
stones throw from the beautiful Bulwary Park, located
along the River Sola. Designated as a Nature 2000 area, its
the perfect place to cycle, roller blade, take in the open-air
gallery or simply do absolutely nothing. Come and enjoy!

Wizz Airs Danube Debut

At the Budapest Air Show, Wizz Air wowed
crowds with latest addition to its fleet,
a brand-new A320 which swept low across
the Danube river
One of the most spectacular May Day events
across Europe has to be the Budapest Air Show.
Its not just the stunning aeronautical displays
by vintage aircraft, its the setting above the
Danube, with the magnificent gothic Parliament
building and Buda Castle as backdrop. This
years performers didnt disappoint, with biplane
heroics in the form of flips and tricks from
Hungarian Zoltan Veres, and Pter Besenyei
taking off from Elizabeth Bridge. But the highlight

TAKE OFF FROM TUZLA

of the event was a much larger, newer aeroplane:

the low-flying Wizz Air A320. Marking the first
time an Airbus has been involved in the Budapest
Air Show, Wizz Air Captains David Morgan
and Andrs rday performed two flights above
the river in the brand-new aeroplane, equipped
with sharklets (a winglet that reduces drag and,
with it, fuel burn, making it greener). The initial
low flight was performed at the speed of 140
knots and an altitude of 500ft. After a neat
45-degree turn by picturesque Margaret Island,
the aircraft performed a full-speed flight with
retracted gear at 240 knots. It was a memorable
occasion and we cant think of a better
unveiling for Wizz Airs latest aircraft.

On 11 May the inaugural Wizz

Air Skopje Marathon was held
in Macedonia. The event was a
huge success and, at the finish
line, there were 63 weary Wizz
Air runners. Andrs Bihal and
Zsolt Nmeth ran the whole
42km, while 11 managed 21km.
All in all, the Wizz Air team ran
576km, completing 70% of the
goal set by CEO Jzsef Varadi
in March: that the team should
complete 807km (the distance
from Budapest to Skopje) in
the Skopje Marathon and the
Budapest Half Marathon in
September. See you in the
Hungarian capital, then!

Winter Escape
Wizz Air has unveiled its new
winter schedule from Poland,
with a total of 76 routes to 14
countries. For ski enthusiasts,
popular Oslo-Torp is now
accessible from seven Polish
airports, and flights to other
wintersports destinations
including Grenoble, Milan
Bergamo and Kutaisi are
already on sale. Book now!

Less than a year since Wizz Air started

operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the
airline has proudly announced that it will expand
its operations in the country this summer, with
new routes from Tuzla (pictured right) to Dortmund
in Germany and Eindhoven in the Netherlands.
The three-times-a-week flights to Dortmund will
start on 19 June (with tickets priced from 39.99)
while twice-weekly flights to Eindhoven will start
on 22 June (tickets from 39.99). Seats are on
sale now, book at wizzair.com!

RUN IN THE THERMAL WATER

CAPITAL OF EUROPE: BUDAPEST
...and have a healing bath after the race 29th Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon
here is no doubt about it: Budapest
is one of the most beautiful cities in
the world. And we say, for a novel
way to take in its history and marvel at its
spectacular architecture, run the 29th Wizz
Air Budapest Half Marathon on 14
September. It is the only half marathon in
the world with two UNESCO World Heritage
sights in one race. The participants will first
run along Andrssy Avenue (passing other
runners by the Opera House), then along the
banks of the Danube (to admire Buda Castle),
before crossing the famous Chain Bridge with a
view of the perhaps most beautiful Parliament
building in the world.
The first Budapest half marathon was organised
in 1984. During the last 29 years the race has
grown into a major event in Budapest, with 13,000
runners in 2013, including 8,500 individual 21km
runners and 1,330 relay teams. The race is now
considered a truly international event, attracting

WIZZ_BudapestMarathon_JO S.indd 12

1,600 runners from 65 countries last year.

As if you need more inspiration to come run
to Budapest but we do have more reasons!
Budapest is the only capital city in the world that
is rich in thermal waters with healing qualities.
Thanks to a unique geological feature, Budapest
sits on over 100 thermal springs that feed the
citys famous bathhouses. There is nothing to
compare to the feeling of having a healing bath
after your long run! Come and experience it after
the 29th Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon!
So, what are you waiting for? Book your flight

WIZZ AIR SKOPJE MARATHON

We speak to Skopjes mayor, Koce Trajanovski, following the huge
success of the first Wizz Air Skopje Marathon, held in May
How has working with
an airline in this case
low-fare carrier Wizz Air
benefitted the Skopje
Marathon?
The Skopje Marathon is one of the most
important sports that takes place in our city
and, of course, the most visible. In the last few
years, with the help of the efficient organisation
and promotion of this event, the number of
visitors and participants in the Skopje Marathon
has almost doubled. And it is my great pleasure
to announce that starting this year, and for the
next two years, we will work together with Wizz
Air to organise this great sporting event. I am
positive that this airline, as the main sponsor,
will greatly contribute towards increasing the
popularity of the Skopje Marathon in all the
destinations it flies to, and so increasing the
number of competitors and guests around the
time of the race. Skopje and its citizens, as good
hosts, will make sure all participants in
the marathon and all guests leave with
unforgettable memories.
Other than the marathon, why else should
visitors come to Skopje?
The City of Skopje has become, in the last few
years, the most visited city in Macedonia,

Skopje_JuneS.indd 11

both by home and foreign tourists, and found

itself among some of Europes most desirable
destinations. The City of Seven Gates, the
other name by which Skopje is known, has
much for the cultured visitor, including
concerts, world-class sporting events,
beautiful buildings and natural scenery.
I would like to invite our friends from all
over the world to visit Skopje and the Republic
of Macedonia to enjoy our rich cultural and
historical monuments, the delicious cuisine
and natural beauty, which are guaranteed
to leave them speechless. When in Skopje
you must not miss visiting the Skopje Kale
Fortress, the archaeological sites of Skupi
and Tumba Madjari, the Matka Canyon,
Markos Monastery, Daut Pasha Hammam,
Mount Vodno with its Millennium Cross, the
Sultan Murat Mosque with its clock-tower, the
memorial house of Mother Teresa, the cultural
and historical monuments in the city centre,
the Skopje aqueduct, the Old Skopje Bazaar,
the Havzi Pasha Hospices, the Holocaust
Memorial Museum... Have fun outdoors with
Buskerfest the international street festival
with spectacular shows and other cultural
events, such as May Opera Evenings, Skopje
Jazz Festival, White Nights, Youth Open
Theater, European Movie festival Cinedays,

the Skopje Summer manifestation, and many

more. Our kind hosts will welcome you with
tasty Macedonian traditional meals and wine.
You are more than welcome to visit us!
What is your favourite Wizz Air route
from Skopje?
The affordable flights that Wizz Air has
brought to our country have enabled citizens
to travel quickly, efficiently and cheaply. I
have to admit I dont have a preferred airline
route, but I will say that I enjoy visiting all the
cities in Europe and the world that maintain
friendly relations with my city of Skopje and
with which we exchange valuable experiences
in all areas of urban living.
The 2015 Wizz Air Skopje Marathon will be
