Wine, Cheese, Art and Everything Chocolate Was A Big Hit: This
fundraiser that we held January 17th drew a great crowd from the Lafayette
area. We had a wonderful time and raised some money to help with some
improvements to our existing buildings on campus. From the proceeds, we
will be able to replace a furnace in the school. Im hoping to have the
results ready to publish in the next bulletin. Thank you to everyone who
helped by making food, donating beer, contributing art, preparing mailings,
decorating, playing beautiful music, and working the event. Many people
helped to make this a success. And, thank you to our generous donors. If
you were unable to attend and would like to make a donation to this
fundraiser, please send your check to the parish office and mark it January
Fundraiser.
World Meeting of Families 2015: With news late last year that Pope
Francis is coming to the United States, excitement started mounting. People
have been asking how they can be a part of this important event. They are
hungry for the faith and love the familyand want to be a witness to this
heart of our culture that seems to be threatened in so many ways.
This year, here at St. Lawrence, you will be hearing much about this event,
about family life, and about the need to pray for and support the structure of
the family. Please join us in daily prayer for this event and these intentions.
You can read more about it at worldmeeting2015.org.

Michael Morrison

Archbishop Charles Chaput, Philadelphia, offered these words of welcome

for the World Meeting of Families: Saint John Paul II, hailed as the Pope
of the Family, created the World Meeting of Families in 1994 in Rome to
explore the critical role the family plays in society and to give families
opportunities to talk about the challenges and blessings that all families
have. Our theme, Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive was
inspired by the early Church Father, St. Irenaeus, who wrote the Glory of
God is man fully alive. The glory of men and women is their capacity to
love as God lovesand no better means exists to teach the meaning of love
than the family. His Holiness, Pope Francis also inspired the theme. He
embodies the message of mercy, joy and love at the heart of the Gospel.

THE FAMILY THAT WORKS, PRAYS AND PLAYS TOGETHER

Q: My question is about some of the Old Testament Bible

stories; Adam and Eve, Noahs Ark, and Jonah and the
Whale, for examples. Are these stories that teach us a
concept or a generalization of what happened? Or, are we
supposed to take them literally?
A: Hebrew history was not written the same way we write
history today. Modern historians write down a series of
eventsbattles, plagues, electionsjust as they happened
from start to finish. Scripture, on the other hand, gives us
religious history. The sacred writers use different literary
forms, with many symbols and figures. The important thing
for them was not merely to give us an accurate knowledge
of historical events, but to tell us the truth about our
relationship with God. (Understanding the Scriptures: A
Complete Course on Bible Study, pg. 51). What is written
in the Bible is true. Truth can be conveyed in a variety of
ways, even through the use of figurative language. The
Catechism tells us that Gen. 3 uses figurative language but
affirms a primeval event, a deed that took place at the
beginning of the history of man (CCC 390). Having said
this, one may still interpret them literally, as some of
our early Church fathers did. (email questions
to frduquaine@catholicweb.com).

RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation

During the 2nd phase of the RCIA process,

The Catechumenate, the catechumens
and candidates now gather with the
Catholic community on Sundays for the first part of the
mass, during which, together, we hear the Scriptures,
respond to them, and reflect on the meaning of God's Word
for them personally and as community through the homily.
After the homily, they are dismissed, and with their
catechist, to continue a process of reflection and
application of the Word of God proclaimed in the Sunday
assembly. The bulletin boards have pictures of each of the
candidates and catechumen with their sponsors. When you
see them please welcome them to our parish.
Please keep the Catechumens and the Candidates in your
prayers as they journey toward the Easter Vigil, when they
will become full members of our faith community. There
are no more Rites until Lent begins on February 18, 2015.
Inquiry will resume sessions the second and fourth Sunday
of each month beginning January 11th. If you are interested
in attending an inquiry session please call the Parish Office
at 742-2107 or Jim at 447-2939.
