Transformation
BY WAYNE EISBRENNER, CSSM MINISTRIES MANITOBA FIELD DIRECTOR

It was in the early 1980s when our

family rst was introduced to a new
toy known as Transformers. Our
three sons received these toys that
were in the shape of cars or trucks
or motorcycles representative of an
alien robotic life form that fought for
world peace or dominance depending
on the character whether Autobot
or Decepticon. Subsequently there
came the Transformer cartoons
and blockbuster movie series. Our
guys had many enjoyable hours of
imaginary play time as these toys
were transformed from one form to
another.
In biological terms there is another
word that is used to describe the
change that takes place in the
transformation of a caterpillar into
a butterfly or a tadpole into a frog.
That word is metamorphosis, and it
is derived from a Greek word that is
found in Scripture.
In Romans 12:2, the Apostle Paul
writes this:

The word that is translated into

English as transform is the Greek
word metamorphoo and it means
to change into another form, to
transform or to transgure, and it
refers to the change that takes place
rst from within, and then moves to
the outer person.
We have chosen the theme of
Transformation for this edition of
the Manitoba Missionary. We want
to share with you a sampling of the
stories that we have experienced
this summer: stories of our campers
and staff, and the reality of Gods
spiritual transformation from our
sinful image into the likeness of
Jesus Christ.
It is our prayer that these stories
will inspire and encourage you in
your own personal transformational
walk with the Lord, and that He
will receive all the glory for what
has happened in the lives of those
who came to CSSM Ministries this
summer!

Dont copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God
transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.
Then you will learn to know Gods will for you, which is good and
pleasing and perfect.

Yes! to Jesus
One campers decision to accept salvation
has impacted future generations of followers
The year was 1959. Up near
Flin Flon, Manitoba, young Ken,
the son of a miner, arrived at
Beaver Lake Bible Camp. That
night in chapel, he learned for
the rst time that unless he had a
relationship with Christ, he was
headed for a terrible place called
Hell. When the speaker, Harold
Germaine, a professor from
Prairie Bible Institute, explained
the way of salvation and the
urgency of securing his eternal
destination, Ken was quick to
respond and accept the free gift

of salvation offered in Christ.

In the years since praying the
sinners prayer at Beaver Lake
Bible Camp, God has blessed
Ken with a Christian wife and
a son who is living for the Lord
as he raises his six children. Ken
continues to serve Christ in his
grandparenting role and as he
seeks to mentor men through
ministries like Promise Keepers.
And it all started back in 1959
when young Ken Bensen said
Yes! to Jesus at Beaver Lake
Bible Camp!

Ken continues
to serve Christ in
his grandparenting
role and as he
seeks to mentor
men through
ministries like
Promise Keepers.

God isnt finished

with Beaver
The comeback story of Beaver Lake Bible Camp
BY HAROLD GIESBRECHT,
CSSM MINSTRIES MANITOBA PUBLIC RELATIONS

More than 60 years ago,

Beaver Lake Bible Camp
opened its gates to the youth
and families of Manitoba and
Saskatchewan. However, due
to several factors, the decision
was made to close Beaver for the
summer of 2013.
Early in the summer, I was
contacted by Julie Masson, who
had served at Beaver from 20012007. Julie says, Over the years,

Beaver staff and community

partners have amazed me
with their commitment, action
and support. But this winter
when I was contacted by a
former staff member to talk
about re-gathering the troops,
it was about the memories:
reconnecting with friends,
feelings, our own pasts and
celebrating the work God has
done through this mission and

in our lives. I called Harold

at CSSM the last week of June
about hosting the event at the
camp and was encouraged by
his enthusiasm. As I began to
hear back from former staff
I was growing excited to see
rsthand what God [might] be
stirring for the future.
Natalie and I headed north
on Thursday, August 8th. That
morning, we got in touch with
Cynthia Russell, who had
served as Program Director
in 2012. Shed not yet heard
about the event. She changed
her weekend plans and came
along. Cynthia says, When

Harold had told me about the

opportunity to go out to Beaver
Lake for the weekend I jumped
at the opportunity! I was there
last summer and completely fell
in love with the place. The area
is absolutely beautiful and the
people are wonderful. I feel like
there is such a need for Jesus
name to be known out there
it just excites me to no end. It
excites me because there is so
much opportunity up there to
partner with churches and just
live out Christ-like lives in front
of the people in the Flin Flon/
Creighton area. Another part of
the camp experience at Beaver
Lake that stole my heart was all
of the brokenness. Everybody
was broken on some level and
there is so much opportunity
there as well to help usher in the
healing love, grace and mercy
of Christ into the hearts of the
campers and the people in the
Flin Flon/ Creighton area.

When we arrived at Beaver, the

sun was getting close to setting
over the majestic Amisk Lake
shoreline. Julie says, In August
we were back at Beaver sitting

around the campre singing

into the darkness and sharing
memories, swimming across the
lake to fulll a long time goal
and hanging out in the kitchen
with Cindy Larsen (Director
in mid-2000s) feeling like we
had come home. Suddenly this
weekend wasnt about the past
but the present. Visions for
the future were being shared;
local community members
and alumni from across the
country were showing up and
expressing their own heart and
commitment to the camp. After
feeling like the camp had been
relegated to the past, I began
to hear God saying, I have not
forgotten this work of my heart
and it was becoming evident
that neither had his people.
The community was invited
to come for supper and some 4050 people came! Most were from
a long distance away Alberta,
and even the west coast of BC!
As we chatted, the one message
that came across strongly
was God isnt nished with
Beaver! He continues to stir
hearts of those locally as well as

others from many miles away

to continue reaching the lost
through Beaver. Several have
expressed interest in leading the
camp at a board level, others are
willing to support with their
time or nances. Together, it will
be exciting to see what God will
do in the future. Please pray
for many more years of mighty
ministry at Beaver Lake Bible
Camp!
In the words of Cynthia
Russell God is so not done with
Beaver Lake Bible Camp! I believe
that this season has merely been
a comma in the book that is titled
Beaver Lake.

There is so much opportunity

there to help usher in the healing
love, grace and mercy of Christ
into the hearts of the campers
and the people in the Flin Flon/
Creighton area.

Recently I attended the funeral of one of my
favorite uncles. Uncle Pete passed away into
glory after a brief and courageous ght with
bone cancer, and he will be missed. At the
funeral, as I was sitting in the church sanctuary, I allowed my mind to wander back to the
early 1960s, when Uncle Pete was one of the
major builders of the Zion Lutheran Church
in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Now, some fty
years later, we were in this church building
where we, his family and friends, were sharing
a nal good-bye. On the front of the church
hangs a cross that cross had been lovingly
made by Uncle Pete and his craftsmanship
as a nish carpenter is obvious.
During her memorial reections about
Uncle Pete, my cousin made the statement
that there probably wasnt a street in

This past summer, we at CSSM Ministries, in

Manitoba and across Canada were privileged
to see the Lord Jesus Christ at work as His Holy
Spirit transformed the rough lives of children,
youth and even adults. As you read the stories
found in these pages, you see the visible work
of our invisible and majestic Lord Jesus Christ in
the lives of children, youth and adults who are
hungry for His love and grace.
How blessed we have been to be there this
summer! How blessed to experience the transformation of individuals hardened by the things
that this world often throws at us...the transformation as they hear about the love of Jesus and
as they see that love put into practice in tangible
ways by our staff and volunteers...the transformation that happens as they turn their faces to
Him and receive Him as Savior and Lord!

I am struck by the stories of children who, when hearing about the

love of Jesus in a way that they never have before, make comments
like, I wish He would come and hang around our house.
Weyburn where Uncle Pete hadnt done
some carpentry work and as a result there
was evidence of his quality craftsmanship
all across the city. He had a gifted mind and
gifted hands.
In her funeral message, the pastor told
about the time many years ago when she
needed a prop for VBS a shepherds staff.
She phoned Uncle Pete but wasnt able to
talk to him, so my Aunt Elsie said, Draw
him a picture and hell get it done. She then
pointed to the nished product that was
standing in front of the pulpit - a beautiful,
ten-foot-long shepherds staff.
Upon reection, I thought about how Uncle
Pete had been given the gift of transforming pieces of rough lumber from trees into
beautiful articles of furniture, like the china
cabinet he made for my mom, a shepherds
staff that he lovingly created for the VBS
kids, and the cross that represented the Lord
Jesus Christs sacrice and love for a sinstained world.

I am struck by the stories of children who, when

hearing about the love of Jesus in a way that they
never have before, make comments like, I wish
He would come and hang around our house.
I think of the grandfather who said to one of
our directors earlier this summer, Im not sure
what it is that youre teaching those kids out
there at your camp, but keep it up! I have seen
such a huge change in my grandkids after they
were at camp.
Thats what Jesus does He takes the rough,
splintery, mangled pieces that are so often
a part of who we are and He crafts and
transforms us into beautiful vessels that can
bring glory to Him.
What a blessing it is to see Gods Hands
at work in our camping ministries and in the
lives of those who come both as campers and
as staff! Thank you for partnering with us in
this ministry of transformation. Thank you for
standing with us through your prayers and
nancial generosity.

Something
different
One cabin leaders story of transformation at
Roseau River Bible Camp

BY LYNDOL FAST

The LORD is compassionate

and gracious, slow to anger,
abounding in love. He will
not always accuse, nor will
He harbor His anger forever;
He does not treat us as our sins
deserve or repay us according
to our iniquities. For as high
as the heavens are above the
earth, so great is His love for

10

those who fear Him; as far as the

east is from the west, so far has
he removed our transgressions
from us (Psalm 103:8-12).
What a fantastic summer at
Roseau River Bible Camp. God
worked in many wondrous and
mysterious ways, as well as in
many open, overt, miraculous
situations. It was amazing to see

the staff grow from a group of

individuals with a yearning to
serve God, into a community
with God at the centre and the
connection between them.
During the last week of
summer, Roseau has a Senior
Teen camp. As our camper
numbers were not high, the
leadership team (after much
prayer) decided to accept 45
children from the Family
Life Centre. This resulted
in what is probably the
most difcult, frustrating,
heartbreaking and amazing
week of camp for many of our
cabin leaders. It was difcult
and frustrating because
many of our cabin leaders
grew up in the southeast and
had never worked with kids
from Winnipeg. The week
was heartbreaking because
at the end there seemed to
be so much more to say and
do; a week did not seem long
enough. Finally, the week
was amazing as God worked
through speaker Darcy
Brown and our cabin leaders.
On the last night, one of the
eighteen-year-old unbelieving

boys kept saying, I want to

amazing. There is something
different here. This marked a

by the LORD as he slowly

The camp will continue

We at the CSSM Ministry

Resource Center (MRC) are
excited to introduce to you
our very own, very new, very
prayed-forMinistry Resource
Team Leader, Juanita Neufeld.
Juanita grew up in Bagot,
Manitoba, which is close to Valley
View Bible Camp. She shares that
her family is amazing (followed
by several exclamation marks!),
and that she couldnt have asked
for a better childhood. Growing
up in a Christian home and having parents who modeled lives
of faith, Juanita accepted Christ
as a young child. She recounts
experiencing major growth in her
faith during her years at camp as
both a camper and as staff (shout
out to Turtle Mountain Bible
Camp inserted here!) Juanita
married Jason Neufeld almost
three years ago, and they have a
little dog named Rambo, whose
name is apparently much bigger
than he is.
Though a Manitoba gal,
Juanita quoted Prince Edward
Island as being her favorite
place in Canada highlights
included its beauty and the fact
that it makes her feel like Anne
of Green Gables. Other favorites
include candy (care packages
accepted), the color pink, and
relaxing evenings with family.
Juanita and Bev McCaskell,
who were old friends, ran into
each other one day; as Juanita

shared her heart regarding her

future work decision, Bev planted
a seed about joining the CSSM
Ministry Support Team. She
contacted Juanita a few days
later to discuss their random, but
maybe not so random meeting at
the mall.
For a year I had been praying for
direction and practicing patience
when I didnt feel like I had an
answer regarding beginning a new
position. As I started to connect
with CSSM Ministries, I nally
felt at peace about moving on.
It was a huge answer to prayer,
Juanita shared. Ive seen rsthand
the HUGE impact camp has on
campers as well as staff. I saw huge
changes in campers including
myself as well as seeing many
campers accept Christ during the
time I spent at camp. My husband
as a child accepted Christ at camp
and that was the start of his faith
journey.
This September, Juanita joined
the MRC as Ministry Resource
Team Leader, excited about how
God is furthering His kingdom
and using CSSM Ministries to
do so. Were SO glad to welcome
her to the team her passion for
excellence, eye for detail and
love for people have been such a
blessed addition to what God has
been building at the MRC, and we
love having her around!
Welcome to the team, Juanita!
Were already blessed by you!

A vital role

Camping
ministry has
been in her
blood for quite
some time!

Rebekah and Michael Bergen began their ministry at Valley

View Bible Camp in January of 2013.
Rebekah is the camp administrator and Michael works in
Austin as a carpenter.
Born in Northern Ireland, Rebekah came to Canada at a young
age as her parents followed Gods call to minister to the people
of Canada in the province of British Columbia. She lets us know
that camping ministry has been in her blood for some time!
Michael and Rebekah met at Millar College of the Bible, and
both graduated in the spring of 2012. They were married in
September 2012, and moved to Friendly Manitoba!
Rebekah is playing a vital role in the ministry of Valley View
Bible Camp, with most of her ministry being done behind the
scenes. She and Michael are a part of the ministry team and are
enjoying the new challenges and experiences that come with
living at camp year-round. We welcome Rebekah and Michael
to our CSSM Ministries Manitoba Family!

Pushed to grow
One camp directors viewpoint of transformation
experienced at Dauphin Bible Camp
BY RICHARD BANKERT, CAMP DIRECTOR

Camp is for the Campers!

I dont know how many times
I have heard that said, and its
truefor the most part, but
the truth about summer camp
ministry, and almost every
mission trip that I have heard
about, is that those who are
serving grow way more than
those they are going to serve.
In summer camp, we have the
opportunity to work alongside
a fellow staff member for one,

two, sometimes four months,

whereas the average camper
is here for only one week. That
means we have 2500 more hours
to spend with staff, than with
campers. This does not mean
that campers are less important,
it does mean that you have
time to be built as a team, to
laugh, to cry, to fall helpless, to
encourage, and in the process, be
transformed in some small way.
The time of growth and

transformation that I dislike

the most each summer, is when
staff members get sick. It means
that everyone has to adjust
from their own comfort zone
and help carry the load of the
missing staff member. Yet it is
also during these moments each
summer that we are pushed to
grow. We start to concentrate
more on helping each other,
on reaching out, picking up,
praying for, and encouraging
more. We are stretched to look
beyond our own needs to the
needs of those around us.
When you read the New
Testament, Paul is constantly
reminding us to encourage
one another. Why? Because
encouragement brings about

How majestic
is the giant oak
that spreads its
branches that
much more each
summer, or the
giant redwood
that reaches that
little bit more
towards the sun.

the transformation that keeps us focused

on God. In Hebrews 3:13 we read, But
encourage one another daily, as long as
it is called Today, so that none of you may
be hardened by sins deceitfulness.
We are easily excited about new
growth and forget to encourage and be
excited about the transformation of the
old. How majestic is the giant oak that
spreads its branches that much more
each summer, or the giant redwood that
reaches that little bit more towards the
sun. God is always transforming us and I
am encouraged daily by the hundreds of
staff members and volunteers that come
to each one of Gods camps, not because I
am a giant redwood tree, but because I am
shadowed by them.

Walk of faith

One cabin leader shares the highlights of her summer

BY MELODY WIELER

As the routine of fall starts to

settle in, the question everyone
asks is: What did you do this summer? And what was the highlight?
For me, I served at Valley View
Bible Camp as a cabin leader. Let
me introduce myself: I have been
married for almost 22 years and
have two teenage children. Changes your perspective, doesnt it?
I didnt know what I was getting
into when asked to come to camp,
but I said yes. My children had
been cabin leaders so they advised
me on How to Be a Cabin Leader,
and what to pack. (I think they
enjoyed the role reversal.)
The week of camp arrived and I,
with two friends, were the rookie
cabin leaders although we were the
seniors in senior teen week!
My rst camper was very excited
to be there: I love camp and have
been here three times! The second
camper arrived and her enthusiasm

16

was not so much. As we were

walking to the cabin she rolled her
eyes at me and said, Just to let you
know, I DO NOT want to be here.
OK I smiled back and inside my
head I began to pray for her. How
am I going to reach her?
The afternoon continued and the
cabin lled with girls from a variety
of backgrounds, lifestyles and
personalities, and where they were
in their walk with Jesus.
I became an elastic band. Being
stretched with talking and dealing
with life experiences, issues and
seeing God work in the lives of
these girls. We became a family for
that week. I learned why I was to
be at camp: so God could use me to
show these girls Jesus, and who He
was to be in their lives.
The girl who rolled her eyes at me
opened her heart the second night,
sharing some of the lies she doesnt
want to believe. I shared the Gospel

and talked through some of those lies.

God was speaking to her heart He
knew she needed to be at camp. She
saw Gods love through the cabin
leaders and her attitude changed.
Another camper stayed on for a
few more weeks with the Work Crew
Program. By the end she was a different girl than the one who arrived.
My second week of camp was very
different but yet the theme was the
same: Do these girls have a relationship with Jesus? If they dont, we need
to show Jesus to them. If they do, we
need to encourage them in their faith.
The girls were from church families,
broken homes, single parent families
and inner city families. What a great
place for the girls from different walks
of life to learn about Jesus from each
other and become friends. I saw how
they were patient, helping each other
and playing with each other. What
an opportunity for Christian teens to
help peers learn about Jesus!
We had frog races on the sleeping
bags, pillow ghts, late and even later
nights talking, an evening swim,
giggling sessions and lots of laughter,
plus all the scheduled activities.
Camp was many weeks ago; my
life at camp for those two weeks was
a blessing to me. Sharing who Jesus
is, sharing my faith walk, seeing how
God is working in the lives of the
campers, making friends with cabin
leaders much younger than I, and
learning from them. These were the
highlights of my summer.
Being condent of this, that he
who began a good work in you
(campers) will carry it on to completion until the day of Jesus Christ

Overflowing hearts
A youth pastor couple joins the staff at
Valley View Bible Camp for a week of transformation
BY TRACEY HODGES

When Henry Enns asked me if

my husband, Garnet, and I would
cabin lead at camp this summer, I
knew this was an invitation to join
God in the work He was doing. We
prayed and began to prepare our
hearts for Senior Teen week. We kidded ourselves saying we were the
seniors of senior teen, both in our
40s. As youth leaders we understood
there might be a variety of different
experiences the kids would come
with, so I went into the week determined to lavish the love of God onto
my campers, so they would know
there is a Saviour who desperately
loves them and wants to save them.
And, as God is in the business of
doing, He over owed my heart for
each one of them. As I greeted them
and soon became friends, I realized
that whatever insecurities I was
feeling, I needed to get over them,
because now it was all about God
doing the work. I was constantly
praying for the words to speak and
the power of the Holy Spirit.
I took some time to listen to
each of the girls. It was as if each of
them had been plucked from the
chaos of their lives and placed in a
safe, warm, loving embrace. It didnt
take long for them to trust me and
open up to me. We heard every facet
of struggle from substance abuse

and addiction, teenage pregnancy,

eating disorders, self-harm and
injury, and family dysfunction. I
ached for them, their lives, their
circumstances, their families, or
lack there of, but generally for
the lack of stability in their lives.
I searched my Bible and prayed
continually. I remembered back
to a time when I made poor
choice after poor choice and I
truly had to hit my lowest point
before I chose God to save me,
from me. I remembered being
up at Beaver Lake Bible Camp
as a cook assistant the summer
before, when the director said to

me, The only thing that can save

these kids from their circumstances
is Jesus. I didnt have any answers
for them, other than I knew they
needed Jesus. As each one of the
girls became raw and open to a
relationship with Jesus I began to
have a peace, knowing that even
though humanly it might not seem
possible for these girls to overcome
their situations, with Christ all
things are possible. I know without
a doubt that each one experienced
the love of God and I am so thankful that the greatest transformation
came in my utter dependence on a
heavenly Father who loves me more
than I could ever imagine. The love
of God is greater far than tongue and
pen can ever tell...to grasp how
wide and long and high and deep is
the love of Christ (Eph. 3:18). As we
continue to pray for the campers in
our cabin, we have a condence that
God will complete the work that He
started. Phil.1:6

ENCOUN ER
A rooted faith
WRITTEN BY JESSICA DYCK

Jessica Dyck is part of the four member Leadership Team for

Encounter, which consists of Barry and Lerissa Buhler and
Devin and Jessica Dyck. When not travelling with the Encounter
Team, the two couples make their home in Austin, Manitoba.
So then, just as you have
received Christ Jesus as Lord,
continue to live your lives
in him, rooted and built up
in him, strengthened in the
faith as you were taught,
and overflowing with
thankfulness. Colossians 2:6,7
What a cool and exciting
theme verse for Encounter this
year! Rooted
As I reflect on this verse,
there are numerous desires
that spring to my mind. It is my
prayer that:
our faith and the students
faith would become so
real and deep that our
excitement for Jesus would
shine to everyone around
us.
we wouldnt just be shallow
Christians, but see our
roots in Christ go deep
with a deeper hunger for
more of God. Our world so
desperately needs people
who truly live their lives in
Him, and who reflect this
reality to our lost world.

20

we wouldnt just say that we are

Christians, but would truly live
out our faith in daily living so
others see a difference in us.
through the power of Christ
in us, the Encounter ministry
would not only make disciples
of these students, but even
more importantly that once
they leave the program they
would continue to be seeking to
help others become disciples of
Christ.
they would be a light in a
dark place even in difficult
circumstances and that their
roots would be so deep, nothing
could cause them to waver in
their faith in Christ Jesus.
What an exciting journey to
look forward to as we begin
this journey in obedience to
the mission of making disciples
through Encounter! God has been
so incredibly faithful to Encounter
this summer, and I know He will
continue to do so.
Our theme verse ends with
these words: overflowing with
thankfulness.

I think it is appropriate to thank God for
what He has done and provided for us this
summer. Here are just a few of the answers to
prayer experienced in the past few months:
Fourteen students for our first year of
Encounter!
A refurbished touring bus!
Licensing of Barry and Devin so they can
drive the bus!
Financial provisions
Etc., etc., etc.
We ask for and covet your prayers as we are
on the road. We started in New Brunswick
on September 26th and will continue west
throughout the following months. We
continue to rely on Gods strength in this
new journey and adventure. We close by
encouraging you as well to continue to be
lights in your world!

LET S

TAKE OUR HATS OFF TO THE PAST,

AND OUR COATS OFF FOR THE FUTURE .

- Dr. Henry Hildebrand (1911-2006), former camper at Gimli Bible Camp.

The CSSM story started with Lloyd Hunter,

a man who desperately wanted to reach
Canadians for Jesus especially Canadian
children, Ferdi vanDongen, National Board
Chair of CSSM Ministries explains. Lloyds
initial focus was planting Sunday Schools
across the provinces, hence birthing the
Canadian Sunday School Mission.
Over the years, ministry focuses have
shifted and changed as God has continued
to use the mission most often through
camp ministry to reach generation after
generation with the Gospel. In many ways
we have outgrown our own name by simply
accepting the opportunities God has given
us, says Ferdi. Our 65 ministries now include
First Nation outreaches, church plants, and
of course a variety of camps all focused
on reaching Canadian children and youth
with the message of Jesus. Were at a place
as a mission where we need to almost reintroduce ourselves and our purpose
to the next generation in such a way that
the original heart and vision of CSSM is
communicated.
Executive Directors Bill and Bev McCaskell
recognized this need to better communicate
the core purpose of CSSM Ministries, and
have joined the National Board in working
towards reintroducing CSSM Ministries
to the next generation. In the process, the
National Board explored the idea of pursuing
a new name for the mission.
The CSSM Ministries name has such
wonderful memories associated with it for
those who were involved in its formative
years, reect Bill and Bev. When we
remember the stories of missionaries
riding bicycles from town to town to share
the Gospel, of camps being launched, of
school systems being impacted by students
memorizing Scripture, how can we not help
but be moved by Gods unceasing faithfulness

in drawing a nation to Himself? Our desire

is that now another generation would sense
Gods call to reach out to Canadian children
and youth across our nation, and experience
His same faithfulness as they step out to
minister. The question were faced with
now, is how do we communicate that call
to a generation who dont know of CSSM
Ministries and invite them to join us?
For over seven years, the National Board
has prayerfully considered that very question,
and discussed the idea of a new name for
CSSM Ministries with much thought and
reection, eventually deciding on a name that
captures the why of the mission, rather than
the what.
Its tting how our new name looks
backward and forward, reects Ferdi. We
are rmly anchored on the same condent
hope Lloyd Hunter had when he began the
mission that Jesus Christ is the Savior
of the world and at the same time, are
inspired to continue to nd new avenues to
present Jesus, our One Hope, to the nation of
Canada.
We are excited as we look ahead to next
year, shares Bev. We believe that with
the decision the Board has made, we can
continue to reach out to the next generation
and say, Look what God has done, look
where Hes taking us, and look how you can
be a part of it.

The new name of CSSM Ministries will be officially

released January 1, 2014, however a pre-release
announcement will be included in this years Christmas
letter that will be mailed out in mid-November.

Overwhelmed
by His goodness
Stories of Gods faithfulness at Turtle Mountain Bible Camp
BY HOWARD AND KATHY WEIR, CAMP DIRECTORS

There were

many lives

Christ, campers

hungry for Gods

Word, meaningful
worship and
sharing at

campfires.

24

Yes, every camp summer

includes its challenges, but
we want to focus on the MANY
incredible God Filled Moments
throughout the summer. We
were blessed with incredible
chapel speakers, a record number
of campers, providing the
opportunity to share hope and
the transforming GOOD NEWS
with needy, wounded campers.
(Some weeks we had 105 campers
plus staff, making an overflowing
dining hall and chapel. Oh how
we NEED our new facility and
welcome any contributions to the
building fund so this can soon
become a reality!) It was also a
privilege to sponsor 650 campers
in India again through Childrens
Camps International.
Our faithful God once again met
every need (sometimes at the last
minute...including a tag team of
four different nurses during Youth
Camp) with a truly Extraordinary
Summer Missionary family.
What an inspiration to watch
them grow and pour themselves
wholeheartedly into the
lives of the campers and one

another! There were many

lives committed to Christ,
campers hungry for Gods
Word, meaningful worship
and sharing at campfires.
We had Concerts of Prayer at
Junior High and Youth Camps,
and Guy/Girl nights, where
testimonies and Gods truth
is presented to youth who are
disillusioned from the lies the
world has bombarded them
with. We strongly believe these
answers to prayer are due to
our faithful Prayer Warriors.
What an encouragement to see
campers and staff getting it, as
they recognize the battle they
are in and their need to make
PRAYER their first response and
be totally dependent on God.
THANKS for your partnership
in so many ways, and continue
to pray for campers and staff, as
we know Satan will endeavor
to destroy what God has
accomplished in lives. We have
seen God do above and beyond
anything we ever anticipated
and we are deeply humbled and
overwhelmed by His goodness.

Call the Shepherd

Junia, our chapel speaker,
did a dramatization of Hinds
Feet in High Places, followed
by applicable Bible lessons. At
the end of the journey up the
mountain, she was struggling
with doubts and fears when
asked to surrender everything.
A young camper shouted out to
her, You can do it! Remember
the lessons you learned. CALL
THE SHEPHERD! HELL HELP
YOU. Dont give up! It almost
brought us all to tears. It was
such a genuine and passionate
reminder to all of us...especially
the many who were sick and
lacking energy to not give up,

but to call the Shepherd who

would continue to be faithful.
At the start of the week, there
was a camper who made it very
clear he was an atheist. He
wouldnt pray before meals and
didnt really pay attention in
chapel. When I was a camper
with him a few years ago, he
had professed to be a Christian.
When I asked him, he stated
that he had been bullied and
had suicidal thoughts, and he
had prayed to God to take them
away, but He didnt. During the
Concert of Prayer, I felt a tug to
talk to this camper. I shared my
story, my struggles, and how

God was with me the whole way

even when He didnt seem to be.
I also shared the struggles of Job
and how God worked his suffering for good. When I nished, the
camper told me he had prayed
that if God was real, He would
reveal that to him. He then went
on to tell me that God had spoken
through me, and he looked back
to his years of bullying and recognized how God had been there
for him. He decided he was ready
to start trusting God again and
gave his life to Christ. God was
able to bring one of His lost lambs
back to Him through me and my
sufferings. Praise God!

Now to

Him who is
able to do

immeasurably
more than

all we ask or
imagine...
Eph. 3:20

26

I have had the privilege of being a

camp counsellor for four years, and
in all my experiences of working at
camp, High School Week 2013 has
denitely been my favourite week of
all time. I have never seen God answer
my prayers so quickly and tangibly
in regards to asking Him to show up
and do more than we could ever ask or
imagine. I was excited having waited
for this week all summer, knowing
that when I was starting high school,
Jesus showed up in my life. I was also
exhausted, and was getting sick but
I knew that God was going to do
something incredible. Despite our
weakness, I knew the Giver of strength
would sustain us.
On Monday night I talked with
some other staff about how we had
already seen a glimpse of the spiritual
darkness, pain, and brokenness so
many of these campers were coming
from. That day the chapel speaker
reminded us that God isnt the only one
with a plan, but our enemy rulers,
powers and authorities of the unseen
world (Ephesians 6:12) had one too.
Late that night, some staff who were
still up, decided to pray. We prayed that
hard hearts would soften and scars
would be healed. We prayed that God
would not just change a couple lives,
but that not a single camper would
leave unchanged by the end of the
week. We prayed that the enemy would
not succeed, but that, as we put on the

full armour of God, we would have

victory.
Tuesday evening was the Concert
of Prayer, and we started to see that
God was already at work. I remember
looking around as the whole camp was
gathered in a circle singing, falling to
their knees in worship, praying for each
other and embracing each other. There
was a tangible feeling of Gods presence.
God continued to work all week, and
at the campre closing night young
men and women stood (many in tears)
telling the heart wrenching stories of
their past, but how they found hope
knowing God loves them, and will be
with them even when they leave camp.
After campre, the staff formed a circle
around the campers as they knelt in
the middle of the lawn. We cried out
to God to strengthen these youth who
made life-changing choices to STAND
STRONG versus the attacks of the evil
one as they returned home.
Camp is over, but I am still in awe
of what God did. He outdid what any
of us ever imagined and far more than
we thought we could ask for. All praise
and glory to God our Father! Until we
desperately rely on God and ask that
His Holy Spirit would change lives,
camp is merely a fun way to spend a
week of the summer. High School Week
2013 was a week that made a difference
into eternity, and I would not trade the
experience I got from being a part of
what God did, for the world!

God moments
An encounraging experience as a cabin leader at TMBC
BY LAURA McDOWELL

I was

surprised to
hear them

pray at the

same time,
later on

saying they
didnt want

to wait, and
God could

hear them

all anyway!

It has been an incredible summer full

of funny encounters, beautiful friendships, and best of all, God moments!
The rst week of camp, I was slightly
apprehensive as it was the Junior 1 age
group and I didnt know my co-cabin
leader so I didnt have the best attitude
going into it. I would soon discover that
God had amazing plans for that week
despite my outlook.
The group of girls in that cabin had
energy through the roof! I suspected
that devotion time would be difcult
but they compiled a list of Bible stories
they had heard so far, lessons they
learned in each of them AND how
they can be used in their lives! Keep
in mind, these girls were 7, 8 and 9
years old! I thought that devotion time
couldnt possibly get any better. Boy,
was I wrong!
The best night of the week happened
as I came to devotions again. The girls
were engaging in amazing and encouraging conversation on forgiveness and
salvation. When it was nearing the nish, one girl threw her hand up and said
some of my favourite words, Laura, can
we pray before we nish? How awesome is that? Young girls REQUESTING
to pray!! After all the girls fervently
nodded their heads in agreement, she
continued on to say, But could we
maybe pray on our own, just us and
God? I could almost burst! Each girl
eagerly ran to her bed, I put on worship
music, and began my own prayer time

with God. I had a lot to thank Him

for after all! A girl politely asked if
it would be alright for three of them
to pray together. Yes, yes, YES!! I was
surprised to hear them pray at the
same time, later on saying they didnt
want to wait, and God could hear
them all anyway!
My heart was happy, but I was still
curious how their personal time with
God went. Did they understand everything we had been talking about?
As I went and did my good night hugs
round, I had a small visit with each
of them. I can still barely believe the
things they said to me. Each of them
had received God into their hearts. I
do not doubt their sincerity of their
decisions. Later they wrote a letter to
Camp Program Director, Mike that
read: Last Night, all of cabin 4 asked
Jesus into our hearts. And we are all
happy!
Working at camp was once again
an amazing experience. It had its
low moments, but that is where my
faith is tested, and my trust in Him is
strengthened. The main lesson God
taught me was to trust Him whole
heartedly! I can now see the moments
where God was teaching me this lesson. TMBC means so much to me, and
I know each year from now, my ability to be able to return will become
harder and harder. Thanks for the
many who prayed for us through the
summer. It was amazing!

Cooking with Kathy

The little things

BY KATHY WEIR
Tupperware is so handy for
those times when you feel
like throwing out your food
another day!

The food pantry had received

a large donation of macaroni,
so the staff asked a client if
she would like to take some
with her other food items. She
replied, No thanks. I find it
much too crunchy! (Sure made
me feel good as even I, being
cooking challenged, know you
need to add water and cook it!)
I cook a well balanced meal...
you have a 50-50 chance of
recovery

Weve likely heard the illustration of how ingredients by

themselves may not be very
appetizing (raw eggs, vanilla,
flour, baking soda, etc.). However, when everything is mixed
together and cooked, the results
can be amazing! In the body
of Christ, most of us are pretty
ordinary, and may not feel
very significant, but with GOD
in the mix we can all make
a difference, and together the
outcome can be incredible.
I love bargains, so when I
saw a bag of ripe bananas for 35
cents a pound, it was my incen-

tive to make banana bread.

When visiting Sherri in Ontario, I felt confident with my
internet recipe in hand, but the
two batches turned out totally
different (fortunately they were
still edible). My first mistake
was the timing. While mashing
the bananas, the timer went
off indicating our supper was
ready. This put me into a hurry
mode! I discovered we were
out of flour (but was pleased to
find a small bag of whole wheat
bread flour...and although the
recipe called for cake flour...I
couldnt see where it would
make any difference).
The mix was much thicker
than anticipated, but dumping the batter into two large
loaf pans, I slipped them into
the oven. The aroma was
wonderful. However, when
putting away the ingredients
after supper, I noticed I had
neglected to add a few of the
items (vanilla, baking powder
and baking soda). Since it
called for so little compared
to the other ingredients, I was
sure it shouldnt make a lot of
difference. As you can guess...
the result smelled like banana

We forget there is no such thing as

unimportant little sins in Gods eyes.

28

bread but looked and tasted

more like concrete bricks. (That
reminded me of the baked oatmeal
I made last May for a rental group.
After serving it, I discovered I
had missed the 4 ingredients on
the other side of my recipe card!
Perhaps now you understand the
importance of us finding good
cooks for camp so vital!)
Yes, little things actually make
a HUGE difference. No matter how
hard we try to keep our sins a secret,
make excuses or pretend they dont
matter, they have a tendency to
eventually be revealed (just like the
end results of what we are cooking).
We are tempted to feed on things
that arent appropriate or honouring
to God. Its easy to compromise and
think a little bad language, scenes
in movies or music lyrics that ll our
minds are no big deal. Obviously we
wouldnt feel the same way if we
were served sandwiches with mold
on the bread or brownies with just a
little dog poop mixed in. We forget
there is no such thing as unimportant little sins in Gods eyes.
This Thanksgiving, be sure
to count your blessings and be
THANKFUL. Look for the big and
little things that God in His grace
enriches our lives with on a daily
basis. Lets keep short accounts of
sin (no matter how seemingly
small), and live a surrendered life
as our appreciation offering to HIM
who gave His all for us.

Putting faith
into action
Making an impact at Gimli Bible Camp
BY GEOFFREY AND ANGELA LOTT

This was your fi rst time

serving at Gimli Bible Camp.
What led you there?
This was our rst time serving
at Gimli Bible Camp, but not our
rst time serving with CSSM
Ministries Manitoba. Last year
we served at Beaver Lake Bible
Camp where we recognized the
needs of the kids, and wanted
to return, but we were informed
that the camp was not being
run this year. We asked if there
was anywhere else we could
serve. Wayne, the Manitoba
Field Director, suggested Gimli
Bible Camp. After talks with the
family, and much prayer, we
decided to spend our summer
there.
What were you doing before
camp started?
Geoffrey is nishing his A.A. in
Christian Ministry at Briercrest

Bible College, and will graduate

this coming April. We are both
also working full time. Geoff
also works with the Caronport
Junior Youth Group, and I teach
the Sunday School once a month
at our church. This fall we hope
to become involved once a
week with a drop-in meeting at
Riverside Mission in Moose Jaw.
Our daughter, Sarah, joined us
at Gimli. She did the Leadership
Development Program (LDP)
and helped in the kitchen the
weeks she was too young for a
cabin. She loved her summer
and has every plan to return
next summer to work at Gimli.
What roles did you
have at camp?
ANGELA - I was primarily
the Head Cook for most of the
summer, although I did a weekand-a-half as the Health Ofcer

I had no thought in my mind that

I would be leading anyone anywhere,...

God had a very different plan.

30

at the beginning of the summer.

GEOFFREY - I spent the
majority of my time as a
maintenance worker, with one
week in a cabin, and spent some
nights lling in when there was
no male head cabin leader. My
wife and I were also dubbed
camp Mom and Dad by some of
the staff, a job we thoroughly
enjoyed.
What is a favourite memory
from this summer?
ANGELA - I have many fond
memories of the summer, but
my best week overall was teen
week, when all my kitchen help
were 21 years old and under.
They were the best bunch of
girls and we had so much fun!
The funniest day was the day
Alison Cavat and I got stuck
in the walk-in fridge. We had
gone in to check something out,
and the girls thought it would
be fun the shut the door, turn
off the lights, and hold the door
shut from the outside. Alison
and I grabbed the handle on
the inside and pulled as hard

as we could. Then we started

shouting and pounding on the
door for them to let us out. At
rst the girls were just laughing,
then when they couldnt get the
door open, they started getting
worried. We were encouraging
them to try harder. They decided
they needed help, so called one
of the male counselors. Alison
and I told them we would
push and they could pull on
the count of three. At three, we
still pulled hard on the door, so
it didnt open. We said to do it
again, counted to three, and we
let go of the handle. The door
flew open, the guy who yanked
on the door almost fell on the
oor, and Alison and I were
just standing there, laughing
so hard. The girls didnt know
whether to laugh or cry! I love to
use every opportunity to build
relationships with those I work
with, so my memories revolve
around that!
GEOFFREY - This year at camp
has so many memories. The
staff at the camp really made a
big difference. I enjoyed Bible
studies with them and shared
in the hardships that come
from being in the camp we
became a family. These people
prayed for each other, and for
the kids in each camp. They
made a difference not only in
my life, but in the lives of the
kids under their care. Many
continue to care for kids in
their communities even after
camp has nished. This is what
camp ministry should be about.

What a blessing it is to see how

the staff members have grown
during the summer! Camp is not
just building into the kids who
attend, but building the workers
up in Christ as well.
There are two memories that
stick out to me the most. One
was while I was a cabin leader.
The kids in my cabin were
actually really well behaved,
but one did not want to go to
evening Chapel. I talked with
him about what was going on,
and during evening devotions
he listened and even told others
to listen. What a difference!
And that is not all we read
the Bible together until lights
out - from Genesis chapter 1 to
6! He said that he liked reading
the Bible and would continue to
read with his Grandfather when
he went home. Nothing can
compare to the change Christ
makes in a life!
The next excellent memory
is from the last night of camp.
Each night during camp a group
of staff members would gather
and pray for the devotions going
on in each cabin. On the last

night however, things were a bit

crazy and I could not attend this
meeting, because I was helping
cabin leaders get their kids into
bed (the last night tends to be
the hardest). But the Lord had
something special planned for
the last cabin I went to. All week
the leaders of that cabin had been
stressed by their kids, but had
endured and taught through it.
The speakers during the week
laid a solid foundation for the
kids to learn from. Then God
used me to talk to the kids that
night, and six of the seven kids
in the cabin knelt down with me
to accept Jesus. I want to stress
that all parts of the camp played
into this amazing night for me.
My job for the evening was to
try to help the cabin leaders get
their kids into bed and asleep,
because the leaders were getting
tired. I had no thought in my
mind that I would be leading
anyone anywhere, except to bed
or to the washrooms. God had
a very different plan all I had
to do was show up and be used.
The prayers of the staff were
answered in that cabin.

What is a lesson God taught
you this summer?
ANGELA - This summer God
taught me that every moment
of every day is an opportunity
to minister, you just have to be
willing to do it! And sometimes
you minister to people without
realizing it.
GEOFFREY - The lessons I
learned from God this summer
are many, but the one that
sticks with me the most is
how God will use you in any
circumstance even when you
think you are just doing a job.
He also taught me that every
person involved in keeping the
camp running, from those on
the front lines to those behind

32

the scenes, will receive a reward

for every person who comes to
Jesus through Gimli Bible Camp
ministry. One cabin leader
stated that maybe the next
Billy Graham or someone even
greater could be in his cabin.
This is what the Lord has been
teaching me. The work done by
this camp is not in vain and will
have eternal signicance.
Is there a special Bible verse
or passage that came alive
to you this summer?
ANGELA - One thing that
kept coming up was loaves
and shes. Whenever I was
concerned that I hadnt planned
enough food, I remembered that

Jesus fed thousands with

almost nothing! :) We always
had enough for everyone!
GEOFFREY - The Bible
passage from James 2:14-26
often came to mind during
the days that my particular
job did not seem to interact
with kids or have much
signicance. I needed to
show my faith by my actions,
which was to do my job well,
no matter what it is it is
needed to keep the camp
running smoothly. Col 3:23
also helped me to work hard:
Whatever you do, work at
it with all your heart, as
working for the Lord, not for
men.

Obeying the Call

Stories of transformation from Adventure Day Camp
BY LINDSAY GEDDERT

One of the hardest things

after running a day camp in
Flin Flon was watching Tanya
go home. I had just spent the
week getting to know her,
teaching her about Jesus, and
pouring as much love into
her as I could. Then she left,
and I didnt know what kind
of home shed be going back
to, or whether anyone would
continue to disciple her and
teach her about the love of God.
In 1 Corinthians 3:6-8 Paul
says, I planted the seed,
Apollos watered it, but God
made it grow. So neither he

who plants nor he who waters

is anything, but only God,
who makes things grow. The
man who plants and the man
who waters have one purpose,
and each will be rewarded
according to his own labor.
It is so beautiful when we
get to see the transformation
God brings in a childs life, but
sometimes our job as camp
workers includes more planting
seeds than reaping results. We
get to share with our campers
the most important lifechanging message that they
will ever hear: the gospel. God

loves them. He sent His Son to

die for them. Their sins can be
forgiven, and they can become
children of the Most High God!
Not every child may be ready
to understand this message, but
as soon as it is spoken, the seed
is planted. Other people may
come into that childs life and
water the seed, but in the end it
is God who makes it grow.
So can we trust God with
our kids? Can we be willing to
release them into His hands? In
the end, we cannot save kids.
We cannot be the ones who
bring transformation into their
lives. But God can, and He will.
He loves them so much more
than we do! We can find joy
in planting seeds, because we
know were obeying the call
God has given us. We may not
always see the results of our
efforts, but it is so worth it. God
is faithful to continue the work
Hes started in our campers
lives.

We may not always see the results

of our efforts, but it is so worth it.

MINISTRIES

the last laugh

Harolds Humor

One of the things that amuse Natalie and me as we travel are signs. Here
are some of our favourites.
If you encounter a funny sign in your journeys, feel free to take a picture
of it and send it to me. Maybe we can publish them in a future edition of this
magazine!

We spotted this sign in

front of the Prince of
Wales motel in Waterton
Lakes National Park.
Maybe if wed paid $800
for that last remaining
room they had, wed
understand it

Im glad this sign in St. Boniface is bilingual,

but it still doesnt make sense to me! Maybe if
they had a Plautdietsch translation, Id figure
out which way to go here!

Heres a sign we
spotted just down
the hall from
my Moms room
in the seniors
home. Natalie
was suggesting I
should get a copy
for my office!
