institutionofhigherlearningworthyofsomanyyearsofmyloyalty,effort,andscholarship.
TheOxfordEnglishDictionarydefinesauniversityasaninstitutionof"highereducation",yettheUI'sresponseshowednoevidenceof
advancedanalysis,nothoughtonalevelsimilartothatclearlyputforthbytheartist,onlytheimmediatekneejerkreactionthatan
imageofaKuKluxKlanrobemustberacist,withnootherpossibleinterpretation.Suchafundamentalignoranceofartfroman
institutionthatclaims,initsownmissionstatement,"toadvancescholarlyandcreativeendeavorthroughleadingedgeresearchand
artisticproduction",isunconscionable.
Inyourownwords,PresidentMason,theUniversityofIowaseeksto"worksidebysidetodiscoverandsharenewknowledgeandto
preparethenextgenerationofleaderstohelpsolveourworld'smostpressingproblems",yetIfearthatthisuniversitydoesnothave
thewherewithaltopreparethenextgenerationtohaveeventhemostbasicthoughtsaboutartorthehumanexperience,muchlessto
combatsocialissues,oneofthemostimportantofwhichisracism.
Tanyolacarattemptedtodothiswithhiswork,acritiqueofracistcultureintheUnitedStatesbothhistoricalandcurrent,aswellasthe
passivecollaborationinracismbythosewhoconsumemainstreammediacoverage,butdonothingtoeffectchange.Likemanyworksof
art,itwascontroversial,speakingtotheemotionsofthevieweraswellasthemind,potentiallycausingdiscomfort.Butthe
interpretationofaclearlyantiracistpieceasracistdisplaysflawedandlazyanalysis.Itspeakstothefailureofthisuniversitytoeducate
itsstudentsonhowtothinkaboutart,especiallyartwhichevokesthemostvisceralhumanemotions,andespecially,howtorespondto
artandspeechwhichoffendsthem.Insteadofrespectfuldiscourse,Tanyolacarandhisworkweremetwithdeaththreatsanddemands
forremoval.Thiswasateachablemoment,andIowafailedmiserably.
Ofcourse,thereisanotherpossibility,thattheUIadministrationwasfullyawareoftheantiracistintentofTanyolacar'swork,but
accededtothepressureofotherswhosawonlythesymboloftherobe.Ithinkthatissomehowworse,toabandontheprinciplesofthe
universityinfavorofthepathofleastresistance.Ifthatisthecase,theUIhasalsochosenthewronglessontoimpartduringthiscritical
teachablemoment.
IfullyunderstandthelegalrightoftheUItoremovetheartinstallation,andmainlyquestionthestatementsissuedafterwardbyTom
Rocklinandyouroffice.ItisthesewordsthathaveprovedtomethattheUniversityofIowahasnounderstandingofartorspeech,and
norighttoclaimthatitisaninstitutionthatfostersthearts.Furthermore,theinterpretationofartisnotaskillbeusedonlywhenvisiting
galleriesandmuseums,butinvolvescriticalthoughtaboutideasthatarenotpresentedovertly,andcanbeappliedtoanyareaofstudy
(e.g.statistics,sociology,literature,chemistry)aswellasdailylife.Whiletheinitialeventindicatedthatyouhavefailedtoeducatethe
generalstudentbodyonhowtointerpretandrespondtoartortothinkanalytically,itwastheadministration'sresponsethatshowedthe
faultwasnotinthestudents,butinyourownfundamentalmisunderstanding.TheUniversityofIowaadministrationcannothopetoteach
studentstohavecriticalthoughtsaboutart,race,orthehumanexperience,becausetheyhavedemonstratedthemselvesincapableof
doingso.
IamlefttoquestionhowIcancontinuedevotingmytimeandenergytoobtainingadegreefromsuchaninstitution.HowcanIowaclaim

campuseveryday.ThisisoneofthemainreasonswhyIwantedtobecomeaResidentAssistant.Iwantedtobecomeapartof
thechange,helpsculptadifference,andcreateacohesivecommunityamongstanassortmentofindividualsincludingcolor.These
tacticswouldenablethegapthatdividesthestudentsatUItoceasetoexist.Though,therealityis,thattherearecomplications
whentryingtofulfillalargerole.Thus,asastudentIamlimitedonpaintingthispictureofafunctioningandstablecommunity.In
return,Iamseekingforyourattention,theadministrationofUniversityofIowa.
We,peopleasaminorityspecificallyofcolor,endureunrulyandbarbaricbehaviorfromourpeersandinstructorsattheUniversity
ofIowathatconstantlygounnoticed.Studentsdonotreporttheseincidentsbecausewedonotbelieveourvoicemattersonthis
campus.Thisisauniversitywhereallwalksoflifearesupposedtobeembracedbyawelcomingcommunitywithcohesiveness,
andwherediversityissupposedtobethefoundationofastrongcommunity.However,thesefactorsdonotexist,especiallyfor
studentsofcolor.AlackofconcernfromtheUniversityofIowaadministrationispartiallytoblameandhasfailedatincreasing
inclusivityanddiversityonthiscampus.Asastudent,myfellowpeershavealsovoicedthatitisnotplausibleforthemtocallThe
UniversityofIowaahomeawayfromhome.Constantly,theyarebeingpushedawaybydiscriminatorygesturesandremarks,
whichseemtobetheunderlyingcultureofUI.Asaresult,weareforcedtowalkoneggshellsamongstourpeersandprofessors.
Asanemployee,studentshaveexpressedtometheirfeelingsofisolationanddetachment.Asaresult,theybecomeconfinedto
theirlivingfacilitiesandsteerawayfromengaginginextracurricularactivitiesatyouruniversity,infearofbeingunwelcomedonthe
basisoftheirskincolor.Thisisbecauseadministratorsandleadersofthisuniversityhavenottakentheinitiativetocreatechange
andbuildawelcomingcommunityforallindividuals.Individualsofcoloronthiscampushavebeenexcludedfromthiscommunity.
Thus,itisnotacceptableforthesetrendsofdistastefulbehaviortocontinuetoflourishwithoutacknowledgementorconcernfor

IowaAlum.IamwritinginresponsetotherecenteventofaKKKdisplayonthePentacrestandthe

districtsinthewesternmetrooftheTwinCities.Ourfocusisprimarilyeducationalexcellenceandracialequity.I
feelIcouldbeofresourceandperspectiveinservingonanadvisorycommitteeforIowafacultyandstaff
professionaldevelopmentinthisarea.
IfullysupporttheUniversity'sdirectiontoincreasethenumberofstudentsandfacultyofcolor.Andtheultimate
focusofmyworkinMinnesotaistoclosetheraciallypredictableachievementgap.Unfortunately,incidentsof

institutionand,indoingthis,legitimatediscourseisshutdown.
TheseactionsgoagainsteverythingIwastaughtinmyliberalartseducationattheUniversityofIowanamely,tothoroughly
examinemyviewsandtheviewsofothers,toinvestigateandquestionpreexistingnorms,andtostrivefornewunderstandingand
considerationofotherswhetherformyownbenefit,forthecommunityIampartof,andsocietyasawhole.
Thehistoricalandculturalcontextoftheworkisclearlythereandtheresponsetotheobjectitselfisproofofthatbutadeeper
examinationofwhattheworksymbolizesandtheintentoftheartisthaseffectivelystopped,inpart,becauseofthedismissive
responsebytheuniversity.
Cateringtothe'TyrannyoftheMajority'maysolveashorttermpublicrelationsissue,butinasomewhatironictwist,Ithinkthe
reactionoftheUniversityofIowawhitewashesabroaderdiscussionofracerelations,institutionalracism,artandprotestinthe
UnitedStates.
Iimplorethatyoumakeroomfordiscussionwiththeartistinvolvedandthatanyculturalcompetencytrainingincludes
discussionabouttheroleofarttoexamineandchallengeourhistory,culture,andinstitutionsthroughsometimesshockingand
confrontationalmeans,thehistoryofartandprotestbeingalegitimateforceofchange,andthebroaderimportanceoffreedomof
