LIT 100: Literature of the

Philippines

I. Title:
How My Brother Leon Brought Home A Wife
II. Type of Literature:
Short Story - a work of fiction that is usually written in prose, often in narrative format.
III. Author:
Manuel Arguilla (1911 1944) was an Ilokano writer in English, patriot, and martyr.
He is known for his widely anthologized short story "How My Brother Leon Brought
Home a Wife," the main story in the collection "How My Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife
and Other Short Stories" which won first prize in the Commonwealth Literary Contest in
1940.
Most of Arguilla's stories depict scenes in Barrio Nagrebcan, Bauang, La Union where
he was born. His bond with his birthplace, forged by his dealings with the peasant folk
of Ilocos, remained strong even after he moved to Manila where he studied at the University
of the Philippines where he finished BS Education in 1933 and where he became a member
and later the president of the U.P. Writer's Club and editor of the university's Literary
Apprentice.
He became a creative writing teacher at the University of Manila and later worked at
the Bureau of Public Welfare as managing editor of the bureau's publication Welfare
Advocate until 1943. He was later appointed to the Board of Censors. He secretly organized a
guerrilla intelligence unit against the Japanese.
In October 1944, he was captured, tortured and executed by the Japanese army at Fort
Santiago at the age of 33.
IV. Time and Milieu :
During the American colonialism at 1940

V. Settings:
The setting of the story was in Nagrebcan, Leons hometown. This story takes place in
a farm where people would usually ride in carabao. The place was in the local province.
VI. Vocabulary Words:
Ca -> title given in respect to somebody who is older
Carretela -> horse-drawn vehicle / carriage
Camino Real -> the main road
Lacay -> an Ilocano title of respect to an elderly man
Cud -> a wad of something chewable as tobacco
Daintily -> in a delicate manner
Glistened -> a sparkling , lustrous shine

VII. Characters:

Baldo - He was one of the main characters in the short story. He was Leons younger
brother. Baldo was unperturbed man, and he was quiet. He was the narrator of the
story.
Leon - He was the oldest brother of Baldo. He was the husband of Maria. Maria called
him Noel.
Maria - She was a beautiful and lovely. Her forehead was on a level with his mouth, her
nails were long, but they were not painted, and have a small dimple appeared
momentarily high up on her right cheek. She was tall and very still. Her fragrance was
like a morning when papayas are in bloom.
Labang The bull of Leon and Baldo.
Father He was mildest tempered, gentlest man. He was the father of Baldo and
Leon.
Mother He was the mother of Baldo and Leon.
Aurelia She was the sister of Baldo and Leon.

VIII. Summary
Baldo and his older brother Leon were both waiting for their visitor riding a carratela. When
Baldo sa his older brother's wife, who is Maria, he was amazed by her beauty as he narrates
their journey to their home in Nagrebcan. Maria was felt a bit anxious because of meeting
Leon and Baldo's parents for the first time, but along their way home, she discovered the
differences of the life of the people lived there and the life in the city where she met and fell
in love with Leon.

IX. Plot:
This story is written by Manuel E. Arguilla. There were many characters involved in this story,
one of them is Baldo. Baldo was the one who narrated the story. He was the younger brother
of Leon. He was an obedient, innocent and naive young boy. Another character is Leon.
Leon was the one who brought home a wife. He was a responsible, gentle and a loving
husband. Then, another character is Maria. Maria had been born and grew up in a big city.
She was the wife of Leon. She was a supportive, creative and a loving wife. Father was the
one who instructed Baldo on what he will do while he is on the road together with Leon and
Maria. He made an ingenious way to find out if Maria is really worthy to live in a rural place.
The story did explain some ways on what is the meaning of true love and how this true love
can be shown. Ive also included values in the story or attitudes that each character
possessed like the obedience of Baldo, being supportive of Maria, being responsible of Leon
and the hardworking Labang.
This story shows uniqueness because it has its own moral value that readers may follow it.
The author is very good in making techniques in writing that can make readers be more
interested in the story.

Leon and Baldo waited for the arrival of Maria at the barrio.
Maria was afraid that she won't be accepted by Leon's father because she may not able to
adapt their way of living in the province.
Baldo was ignoring to his older brother's question about why did they have to go to Waig
instead of Camino Real. (The reason is that their father wanted to test Maria if she is worthy
to be Leon's wife.)
Baldo discussed their travel to his father.
Leon's entire family talked to Maria. his Father's voice became livelier than before when he
talked to her (which means he accepted her wholeheartedly.)

X. Moral Lesson:

We should respect and accept one's life.

Social status is not a hindrance if you truly love each other.
Meeting your special someone to your family is the right thing to do.
One may have to sacrifice small part of his/her life in order to have a happy life.

XI. Reactions of the story:

The story is good and it reflects to the modern youth even if the story is very old. We can
describe Maria as an example of Filipino women and she also portrays the attitude of a
mahinhin lady. The couple Leon and Maria faces many trials while in traveled to
Nagrebcan. Even though, Maria passed those trials. So, therefore Maria is a very
understanding kind of girl. The story talks about the characteristic of Maria, her attitude, her
looks, how she talks and the way she handle the situation that riding a bull and passed
through Waig. Therefore, basically a woman creates for men.
