Little Jane & The Pistol Whips, from left, Jamey Warren, Tom Murphy, Ashly Holland and Quinton King are
shown at a wedding in Big Sky in 2013. The band has been playing weddings since 2008. Holland said she works
closely with the bridal couple to make sure they get the sound they want for their big day.

Say I do to your wedding band

hoosing the right band to play at

your reception is one of the big
decisions when its time to plan your
wedding.
Musician Ashly Holland has been performing at weddings for more than five years with her band, Little Jane
and The Pistol Whips.
Holland said for some couples, the music at the reception is one of the most important components of their
wedding.
People on a budget prioritize, and a lot of the time,
music is high on the list, Holland said. They figure
everything else around the music.

For example, a couple might decide to host a buffet

rather than a full sit-down dinner, to allow more of the
budget for the band.
Most Montana bands are available for weddings, Holland said. The summer months, of course, are the most
popular, and with a small window of eight to 12 weeks for
outdoor venues, its a good idea to book as early as possible.
Many people find their band by listening to bands perform in bars and other venues. Holland knows of some
bands who perform at bridal fairs, so people get to hear
some of their selections.
Holland said she generally books weddings a year in
advance and usually performs at five to 10 weddings
each year.

Wedding music, from Page 3
Find a band

And what if you dont have a band

in mind? Sample a few. Go to bars
and concerts to hear bands. Most
bands post at least a song or two on
their websites and Facebook pages.
Lots of bands have pages and
songs on the website www.ReverbNation.com.
For a local connection, try the
Montana Band Directory at www.
montanabands.com, hosted by Bozeman music store Music Villa. Bands
are listed by region, musical style
and price range.
Little Jane and the Pistol Whips
started picking up wedding gigs
right off the bat since the bands
inception in 2007. She said couples
find the band mostly through word
of mouth maybe they heard the
band at another wedding, or at a
local venue.
Hollands band has a distinctive
country/Americana sound, which is
a little mellower than the hard rock
sound thats also popular at weddings.

Set list

When its time to sit down and

work out the set list, bands definitely take requests.
This is the time to decide on the
music for the couples first dance
and the father/daughter dance. If
the band doesnt know the requested songs, theyll learn them.
Holland laughs that she had to
learn a pop tune last summer, I
Choose You, by Sarah Bareilles, a
song a little out of her comfort
zone.
It was a fun challenge, Holland
said. And we put our own spin on
it.
Holland has a number of popular
cover songs her band performs.

Costs

Holland estimated that the cost of

hiring a band for your wedding can
range anywhere from $600 up to
$2,300.
Factors that affect the cost
include:
How long will the band play?
Holland said three hours is standard. Performing before the ceremony can incur additional costs.
Will the band have to travel far
from its home base? An overnight
trip can add hotel and meal expenses.
How many musicians will be
performing? Many bands, including
Little Jane and the Pistol Whips, can
configure a solo musician up to a
larger band. Holland said she is able
to scale the bands size up or down,
depending on the couples budget.
Plan on paying a deposit up
front.
There are only so many Saturdays in summer, Holland said, so
firm commitments are needed well
in advance.

Holland will perform her original tunes, as well as popular cover

songs by artists such as Loretta
Lynn, Hank Williams, Gillian
Welch and Ernest Tubb.
Some of her most-requested cover songs include Save the Last
Dance for Me, Waltz Across Texas, by Ernest Tubb, Winters Come
and Gone, by Gillian Welch and
Loretta Lynns classic, Dont
Come Home ADrinkin with Lovin
On Your Mind.
Holland said playing at weddings
is fun for the band as well as the
couple and their guests because by
the time the reception rolls
around, the stressful parts are all
over and done with.
By the time we play, its all done
and people are just letting loose.
Holland will work with a couple
to make sure they get the music
they want.
I feel very honored to be chosen
for someones big day. I take it
very seriously, Holland said.

Ready to hire
your band? Be
ready to ask
some questions
By Liz Kearney

Enterprise Staff Writer

Livingston-based musician Ashly
Holland has been performing at
wedding receptions with her band,
Little Jane and The Pistol Whips,
since 2007. She recommends that
when its time to hire a band for
your wedding, be sure to get everything spelled out clearly in the contract.
Here are some questions to ask
when interviewing potential bands:
How long will the band play?
Three hours is standard, Holland
said.
How many breaks will the band
take?
What kind of prerecorded music
will play when the band is on
break? Most bands will offer their
sound system for someone to plug
in their iPod.
Will the band play during the
wedding, perhaps during the processional?
How many musicians will be in
the band? Many bands can customize their number, which provides
for some cost savings.
What time will the band set up?
Will they have access to the venue
well in advance? And will they have
to set up very early in advance?
What time will the band be
expected on site and what time will
they begin playing?
What two songs are requested,
typically for the bridal couples
first dance, and the father/daughter
dance.
And if the wedding is away from
the bands home base, who is paying
the travel costs?
Getting everything spelled out in
advance helps prevent surprises
and makes for a more stress-free
event.

Paradise Valley venues provide

gorgeous backdrop for weddings
By Liz Kearney

Enterprise Staff Writer

he Livingston area includes a

number of scenic outdoor wedding venues, whether you want
mountain scenery or the Yellowstone
River.
Here are two in the Paradise Valley Deep Creek
Range and Yellowstone Valley Lodge that offer gorgeous backdrops for a summer outdoor wedding.

On the Yellowstone River

Yellowstone Valley Lodge, about 15 miles south of Livingston between mile markers 38 and 39, markets itself
as a fly-fishing destination becoming a wedding venue
happened mostly by word of mouth, explained General
Manager Jim Adney.
We responded to demand, Adney said.
The Lodge offers lodging, catering and a riverside wedding venue with views of the Absaroka Mountains in the
background.
The benefit of getting married at the Lodge, Adney
said, is that for a smaller wedding, everyone can stay on
site. Another benefit is the full-service kitchen and dining room, which provides the catering for its on-site weddings. Lodge staff also provide help with wedding vendor
referrals and rentals.
Adney suggests making reservations a year in advance.
The lodges first responsibility is to its fishing clients, so
there are some summer weekends unavailable for wedding parties.
And then theres that scenery.
Were the only place in the valley right on the river
thats also a full-service hotel with a fantastic farm-totable restaurant, Adney said.
The Yellowstone Valley Lodge is closed in winter.
For more information, visit the Yellowstone Valley
Lodges website at www.yellowstonevalleylodge.com.

Heart of the mountains

Nestled in the heart of Paradise Valley is Deep Creek

Range, owned and operated by longtime area residents
Pat and Marla Wagman. The Range is located off the East
River Road about eight miles from Livingston, on Deep
Creek Bench Road.
The Wagmans, seeing a need for a midsize wedding
venue, built the main hall in 2007. The hall includes a
3,500 square foot reception area, restrooms, a large
dressing/family bathroom, and a large warming kitchen.
Theres another 1,000 square feet of outdoor space covered by a wraparound porch, the Deep Creek Range website says.

Sarah Burns Photography

The Absaroka Mountains provide a dramatic background for outdoor weddings at the Paradise Valley
wedding venue, Deep Creek Range.

Its rustic, but not too rustic, Marla Wagman said.

The Range provides tables and chairs, so securing rental chairs is not necessary. Wedding parties bring their
own linens and decorations, Marla Wagman said.
The facility does not include lodging, but Wagman said
she has a relationship with many of the vacation rental
properties in Paradise Valley, and also with Chico Hot
Springs Resort, and the Murray Hotel in downtown Livingston.
I like to refer people to the Murray its right downtown, Wagman said, so for those who want to keep the
party going, they can walk to a number of downtown bars

The facility does not offer catering, but theres plenty of
room for a wedding party to bring their own caterer, or
even in the case of one wedding Wagman recalls, the group
brought a friend who was a professional chef.
The property includes mountain backdrops along with
Deep Creek burbling through the property. Theres also an
old homestead, rock walls, and log barn buildings.
Theres even a little history behind the old barn.
A guy who worked on the Old Faithful Inn worked on the
old barn, Wagman said.
The Old Faithful Inn, located in Yellowstone National
Park, was built of locally harvested logs in the winter of
1903-04.
Deep Creek Range is available for other meetings and
family reunions. The wedding business has grown mostly
through word of mouth, Wagman said. The popular summer
weekend dates book up quickly Wagman suggests booking a year in advance. Mid-week receptions are always an
option, too.
The hall provides backup in case of inclement weather,
but Wagman could recall only three occasions where the
wedding moved indoors.
For more information, visit www.deepcreekrange.com or
call 223-3554.

In town and free

Another popular venue is Sacajawea Park, along the

Yellowstone River in Livingston, along with the band
shell area of Miles Park.
If youre up for a small informal wedding in the park,
followed by a barbecue, getting married in Sacajawea
Park is free, explained the City of Livingstons Assistant Administrative Services Director Breanna Polacik.
You can always just show up and use the park, she
said.
If you want to guarantee the band shell area for your
wedding, its best to make a reservation and pay the fee
$120 for the day, or $15 per hour, Polacik said.
Theres also electrical outlets available.
Polacik said the Livingston Civic Center is a popular
wedding reception venue. The cost is $110 per day or
$15 per hour, and tables and chairs are included.
Theres a kitchen in the Civic Center, too, available at
an additional $25 per day.
The venue books far in advance, with some couples
booking even two years out, Polacik said.
Theres more information available on the citys website, www.livingstonmontana.org, under the Recreation
Department, or by phoning 222-8155.

The Paradise Valley venue Deep Creek Range has a building that includes a kitchen, reception area and brides
rooms. The location can accommodate groups of up to 300, with room for a full sit-down dinner and band of about
160 people, owner-manager Marla Wagman said.

10 questions to ask your photographer-to-be

(BPT) - Some moments are simply
too important to trust to a camera
phone.
Your wedding will be one of the most
memorable times of your life and no
one can capture it better than a professional photographer. So how do you
find the right one? As you begin the
interview process, here are 10 questions to help you determine if youve
found the best photographer for your
wedding.
1. Does the photographer have a gallery of wedding images you can
review?
Reviewing sample work allows you
to see the photographers strengths
and weaknesses - dont fool yourself,
every photographer has them. Youll
also be able to get an idea of their
style. Are they formal with an eye for
the perfect picture or do they love to
capture the hidden moments when no
one is looking? Look for images that

you can see yourself in. Think of three

words that describe you and share
those with your photographer. Every
photographer has a style and reviewing their gallery can help you determine if theirs is right for you.
2. What is the photographers working style?
Some photographers are orderly and
operate like wedding planners. Others
prefer to sit back and let the events of
the wedding unfold. Its important that
you find someone who can understand
and meet your expectations. Discuss
this ahead of time and ask away, so
that you understand how well the photographers working style matches
your own.
3. Is the photographer available for
an engagement session?
An engagement session does more
than provide you with priceless images together before you get married.
Its also your first opportunity to work
with your photographer and develop a
relationship that will allow you to be

Getting hitched at home?

Things you should think about first

(BPT) - Deciding to get married is
one of the biggest and most important
decisions many people will ever
make.
According to The Knot and WeddingChannel.com, the average wedding costing more than $28,000 the
cost of a new car or a down payment
on a home, so your next biggest decision may be figuring out how to pay
for it. With that in mind, many couples
are opting to tie the knot at home.
Although hosting your special day in
your own backyard can cut costs and
give you more flexibility, you must
address some critical details before
you walk down the aisle.

Beginning basics

First things first make sure you

have enough space to accommodate
everyone. If you need to make extra
space, get creative. Did you know you
can fit more guests at round tables
than rectangular or square ones? You
can also invest in a short-term storage
locker, which can temporarily house
excess furniture as well as valuables
you dont want left out among wandering and rowdy guests. Youll also want
to check into local noise ordinances,
which might require a permit to host
a loud party. You might need a permit
to park cars along your street, too.

Prepared and protected

In addition to these important basic

details, couples need to make sure
they are protected if anything goes
wrong on their big day. Joe Vahey,
vice president and product manager
at Erie Insurance, suggests happy
couples think about the following
three key insurance issues when planning a wedding at their home or someone elses to make sure theyre prepared for the unexpected:

Personal property

Keep valuable wedding gifts protected. Depending on how many

guests attend your event, you could
end up with thousands of dollars
worth of gifts. Since personal property like this is covered by your homeowners insurance policy, make sure to
talk to your agent. Theyll look into
your policys personal property limit its usually a percentage of the value

The average wedding costs more than $28,000 these days. Getting married
at home in your own backyard can be affordable and spectacular with
a little planning.
of your home - to ensure everything is
covered.

Liability issues

Its important to make sure youre

protected from liability, too. If your
uncle falls while doing the chicken
dance or your cousin trips while diving to catch the bouquet, you could
end up in trouble. While some liability
coverage is included on standard
homeowners policies, youll want to
review the liability limits with your
agent in order to assure you have
enough coverage. Additionally, its
always wise to consider adding an
inexpensive personal catastrophe liability policy (sometimes called an
umbrella policy) to your insurance.
Having this extra protection will provide you and your future spouse with
needed peace of mind on a hectic day.

Rings

Wedding rings are an important

part of the ceremony, a symbol of
your special bond. Consider scheduling the rings rather than relying on
the blanket coverage provided by a
standard policy, which may have a

value limit. A scheduled ring has additional coverage up to the specific value of that ring, so you wont have to
worry about replacing a lost or stolen
ring.

Looking good

Once the behind-the-scenes details

have been addressed, its time to pull
back the curtain and focus on putting
on a spectacular show. Properly welcome guests by getting your landscape in tip-top shape and making
sure to clean your house top to bottom
a week before the wedding. Consider
hiring professionals to lessen your
responsibilities leading up to the big
day. Keep wedding decor and flowers
in line with the look and feel of the
home. Getting married at a beach
house on the lake? Then, stick to a
more casual, understated feel. If
youre hosting a black-tie gala at a
friends mansion, dont be afraid to
embrace elegance and opulence.
Regardless of how you choose to
celebrate your big day, planning
ahead to ensure youre prepared and
protected is one way to enjoy it worry-free, with the one you love.

completely at ease on your big day. Use this session to
confirm if the photographer is indeed the right person to
capture your wedding.
4. Will the photographer create a detailed shot list?
This list will ensure no important photo is missed during
the commotion and excitement of the big day. You should be
able to create that list together, add to the list leading up to
the day and have a copy of that list the day of.
Take an honest look at what images really matter and fill
your photographer in on situations he or she might need to
be aware of in order to prevent awkward moments, and to
ensure that he or she can get the shots that matter most.
5. What kind of lighting will be used?
Whether you have an indoor or outdoor wedding, youll
want to make sure your photographer has professional
grade lighting equipment to deliver the images your wedding deserves.
6. Does the photographer have backup equipment?
Youve prepared contingency plans for every other aspect
of your wedding; your photographer should as well. A true
professional photographer wont miss your perfect shot
because of a technology issue.
He or she will always bring one or two backup cameras,
lenses, flashes, additional lighting equipment, extra memory cards, and batteries.
7. Does the photographer have liability insurance?
Accidents happen at weddings and if one of your guests
trips over your photographers light stand, its good to know
you both are protected. Your reception venue may even ask
the photographer to submit a certificate of liability ahead of
time.

8. Will there be one photographer or two?

A second shooter increases the probability that no shot
will be missed, especially if you are having a large wedding.
If there will be two photographers, ask to meet them both to
get a feel for their personalities and how well they might
blend in on your big day.

The right photographer will capture

moments you never knew existed.
9. What will happen to the images after your wedding?
Will your images be backed up to a hard drive or the
cloud once processed? How long will your photographer
keep the images afterward? Will they be kept for a couple
of years or dumped immediately? If you have any concerns
about losing your photos, knowing what the photographer
plans to do with your images after your wedding is important.
10. When will you get your photos?
No, you wont get your pictures the day after; no photographer can deliver that quickly. Its a good idea, though, to
get a general idea of the timeline ahead of time. You might
even be able to agree on getting a couple of images ready
for social media use very quickly. But obtaining your photos will likely take several weeks. To help with the wait,
some photographers will send you a sneak peak with a few
images. Just ask ahead of time!
You wont be able to see everything that happens during
your wedding day. The right photographer will capture
moments you never knew existed. To learn how you can

Horseshoes and gratitude

Wedding was almost on horseback...

Story and photos by
Jim Durfey

Enterprise Staff Writer

One of the possibilities Meghan Miller and

Jesse Turner discussed
for their wedding ceremony was exchanging
vows on horseback. The
couple had been on horse
pack trips with Meghans
father, Mike Miller. Their
relationship blossomed on
horseback, so that would
have been appropriate.
But the couple finally
decided to nix that plan.
Both the ceremony and
the reception were held
inside Livingstons Depot
Center.
The wedding guests
were very grateful for

that decision because the

day they were married,
May 10, 2014, was not
kind to anyone who had to
be outside for any length
of time. The wind was
howling and snow was
coming down hard.
Horses were still
part of the wedding, in
a way. The theme was
horseshoes. The groom
is employed as a deputy
sheriff and as a farrier.
So it was no surprise for
relatives and friends
of the family that two
horseshoe shaped cakes
adorned the dessert table.
Even the wedding invitations had horseshoes on
them. A western saddle
was also on display in the
Depot Center during the

ceremony and the reception.
All the bridesmaids
wore cowboy boots and
the menu at the reception featured food that is
often served at a western
barbecue, such as baked
beans and potato salad.
The band played swing
dance music, of course.
When she was asked
if she would change
anything if she had her

wedding to do over again,

Turner said, Maybe it
would have been better to
get married later in May.
Montana weather is so
unpredictable.
That might have allowed the couple to
exchange vows on horseback as they had originally planned. Then again,
Mother Nature might
have thrown another
curve ball at the couple.

The flower girls lacy dresses and cowboy boots made for
interesting attire. Cowboy boots were the most popular
footwear at the reception.
