Handling, Storing and

Dispensing Marine Lubricants

Good practices translate into big savings

To ensure that all lubricant and grease products are fit for
purpose and can deliver maximum performance in use, they
must be stored and handled correctly, both in shoreside storage
and onboard the vessel. Poor practices when handling, storing
and dispensing oil and grease can cause the products to
deteriorate or become contaminated, leading to waste requiring
disposal. The use of contaminated oil and grease can lead to
inadequate lubrication, which may result in machinery damage
and potentially higher maintenance costs.
Common causes of contamination, deterioration and waste in
the handing, storing and dispensing of marine lubricants are:

Damaged containers due to poor handling or storage

arrangements

Water contamination with rain, sea water or condensation

Dirty dispensing equipment

Exposure to dust and dirt

Mixing different brands or product types

Exposure to excessive heat or cold

Ideally, store all drums and pails under cover

Product shelf life exceeded

If drums must be stored on deck:

Storage

Store on pallets to raise off of the deck

Note: If drums are stored outside with bungs upward, there is

a danger of water settling on the lids around the bungs. Drums
subject to hot days and cold nights will expand and contract,
causing the water to be sucked into the drum contaminating
the oil.

Ideally, store with bungs downward

If stored with bungs upward, keep tilted to avoid water
settling around bungs
Cover with tarpaulin

Drums and pails must be securely tied

Best Practice Guidelines

Ensure all drums and pails are properly labelled

Handling

Always check regularly for leakage around drums and pails

Move drums and pails safely using correct lifting

equipment

Do not drop drums and pails onto the deck

Take care when moving heavy drums and pails

Dispensing

Always use first-in, first-out storage principle

Check dates on labels and always use oldest products first

Clean drums and pails before opening

Use clean dispensing equipment

Do not mix different products

Always replace lids and bungs properly after opening

Consider using proper grease dispenser on drums and pails
