ENG4UO Independent Summative Unit

Your task is to write a 5-paragraph academic comparison essay underlining the


similarity of themes in two novels written by Canadian authors. The two books must
be chosen from the literature list available in the library. In addition, your first ISU
novel will be presented to the class with a partner.
Each part of the ISU essay will be done in stages.
Part One Due Monday October 6, 2014: Book 1, analysis notes
Pick and read book one, making analysis notes as you read. Notes must be at least
4 pages long (typed, single-spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman) and include
notes on character, setting, plot, language, and theme.
Part Two Due Monday, November 3, 2014: Book 2, analysis notes
Pick and read book two making analysis notes as your read. Notes must be at least
4 pages long (typed, single-spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman ) and include
notes on character, setting, plot, language, and theme.
Part Three Due Monday, November 17, 2014: comparison notes
Compile four pages of notes comparing book one and book two. These notes must
have the following headings: character, setting, plot, language, and theme.
Part Four Due Monday, November 24, 2014: Typed essay draft for peer
editing
Typed essay draft brought to class for peer editing.
Part Five Due Monday, December 8, 2014: Final Product
Write an academic 5-paragraph comparison essay, comparing the two novels you
have read. All parts from above and at least one rough draft must be submitted in a
duotang. The drafts and final copy should be typed, double-spaced, and in 12-point
font, Times New Roman.
Book notes and final draft are to be submitted to turnitin.com by 8:05am on the day
they are due.
