Volunteer campground hosts needed at Michigan state

parks and state forest campgrounds in 2010
The Department of Natural Resourc-
es is offering free camping this sum-
mer for outdoor lovers who volunteer
as campground hosts at Michigan state
parks or state forest campgrounds.
The campground host program, es-
tablished by the Department of Natural
Resources, allows individuals to camp in
a state park or state forest campground
at no charge, in return for providing visi-
tor assistance in the rustic campgrounds
found throughout the Upper Peninsula
and northern Lower Peninsula.
Campground hosts direct visitors
to their campsites, answer questions
about the park or state forest, arrange
campground activities and perform light
maintenance and other services, depend-
ing on the host’s talents and interests.
Interested parties must be at least
18 years old, provide services five days
per week (including weekends and holi-
days), for a total of 30 hours, serve a
minimum of four consecutive weeks and
furnish their own camping unit, equip-
ment and personal items.
A background check will be required
on all applicants, and may also require
an interview or requests for additional
information. Hosts are chosen by state
park and state forest managers based
on their familiarity with the state park
or state forest system, their camping
experience, special skills, availability,
knowledge of the area and the needs
of the specific state park or state forest
campground.
Persons interested in becoming a
campground host volunteer can obtain
more information and an application on
the DNR’s Web site at: www.michigan.
gov/dnrvolunteers. Persons interested
in being a campground host at a state
park should apply directly to the park
of their choice. For more information

“University plates are a great
way to support higher education
while showing pride in your fa-
vorite Michigan university,” Land
said. “Surprise your loved one with
a gift they’ll be proud to show off

People can buy a plate at a Sec-
retary of State office for a spouse
or family member if they live at the
same address.
Fundraising plates cost just
$35, $25 of which goes directly to
the school, in addition to the stan-
dard vehicle registration fee. The
cost of renewing the plate is $10,
which goes entirely to the institu-
tion, on top of the registration fee.
The plates also can be personal-
ized for an extra $30 for the initial
plate, and $15 extra when renew-
ing. Buyers can visit the depart-
ment’s “Plate It Your Way” Web
page to see if a plate configuration
is available.
Besides the 15 university plates,
vehicle owners also can choose
from fundraising plates that sup-
port wildlife habitat, Michigan
lighthouses, agricultural heritage,
the American Red Cross and Sal-
vation Army, among other causes.

CARSON CITY – The Carson City-Crystal
Area Schools Foundation (CCCASF) surprised
local schoolteachers with a holiday gift this past
month. On December 17, CCCASF board mem-
bers Nancy Seals and Jennifer Churchill person-
ally visited school classrooms to award mini-
grants to teachers from Carson City Elementary
and Carson City-Crystal Middle School and High
School.
“It was incredibly rewarding and so much
fun to deliver these mini-grants to the class-
rooms,” said Seals. “You could just see the joy in
the teachers’ faces. This is why the foundation is
here; to improve our schools in any way possible.
We invite teachers from throughout our schools
in Carson City and Crystal to apply for these
mini-grants next year.”
Award recipients in 2009 included the fol-
lowing teachers and school personnel: Amy Bai-
ley, Tammy Decker, Ryan Fritz, Janet Gamble,
Jennifer Geiger, Julie Farmer, Kelly Hampton,
Maureen Helman, Rita Hockemeyer, Kristine
Holden, Sue Holden, Sam Jensen, Kathy Kurtze,
Dawn Lambright, Charles Larkins, Karen Par-
menter, Kris Rayburn, Leslie Sharp, Pat Trom-
mater and Martha Warner.
“We want to remind everyone to participate
in the annual CCCASF golf outing held every
August,” said Seals. “More mini-grants can be
awarded as participation grows!” The CCASF 4th
Annual Golf Outing will be Friday, August 20,
2010, at 9 a.m. at Huckleberry Creek Golf Course
in Pewamo.

weapon. The actress becomes
the accused. The jury foreman
takes the part of the murdered
man, and as the re-enactment
proceeds, some people begin
to lose themselves in their
parts. It’s a tense situation,
for if the girl did not kill her
uncle-who did? The verdict,
the solution, and the climax
of the play arrive together in a
single, surprising conclusion.

Ensley Baptist Church Don’t invite pests into your home

Ensley Baptist Church hosted
its very first blood drive on Thurs-
day, January 14, 2010.
The blood drive took place at
the church, 7077 East 120th St.,
Sand Lake. Donors could visit
www.miblood.org to schedule an
appointment. Walk-ins were also
welcome throughout the drive.
Everyone who attempted to do-
nate received a free t-shirt.
Any healthy person 17 or older
who weighs at least 110 pounds
may be eligible to give blood ev-
ery 56 days. On average, one out
of every seven people entering the
hospital will need blood, and each
pint of donated blood can help as
many as three people.
Staff from Michigan Blood,
an independent nonprofit blood
bank that provides blood to hos-
pitals across Michigan’s Lower
Peninsula, conducted the blood
drive at Ensley Baptist Church.
“By donating blood at Ensley
Baptist Church’s drive, people
will be giving the gift of life to
directly benefit patients in West
Michigan hospitals,” said Melis-
sa Meitz, recruiter for Michigan
Blood. “These hospitals care for
people from a very large portion
of the state.”

ORDINANCE AND SUMMARY OF THE
PUBLIC REGULATORY EFFECT THEREOF
NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on January 5, 2010, the Township
Board of the Township of Pierson adopted a regulatory ordinance governing Township
cemeteries. The principal provisions of the ordinance can be summarized as follows:
PUBLIC 1. Overview and Repeal. The Pierson Township Cemetery Ordinance was
adopted to regulate the ownership, operation, repair, maintenance and management

As we near the middle of the second trimester here at the high school, I
look back at students that have failed classes in the first trimester and ask the
question “why did you fail that class?” Many answer with the statement, “I
didn’t do my homework.”
I know all the teachers will support and pass students who complete class
work and give his or her best effort on the examinations.
Teachers do not accept late work. Many teachers have also gotten away
from assigning homework due to the fact it is not turned in. Each class period
is at least seventy-one minutes long and I have observed teachers giving
students time to get a good start on the homework or even time to finish.
Freshmen need to hit the ground running when entering high school.
With the recently increased high school requirements, students do not have
the flexibility to retake classes and still graduate on time. Parents of incoming
freshmen, please have your sons and daughters ready for high school. We
have some that will fail classes the first and second trimester of their freshmen
year, which puts them behind quickly. To help students, we have tutoring
after school with busing. High school is not the time to take a trimester off
because you don’t put forth the effort.
Here are seven steps to get good grades. Step one: Believe in Yourself
- In order for you to succeed, you have to believe in yourself and in your
abilities. Step Two: Be Organized - If you’re organized, you have what you
need when you need it. Step Three: Manage Your Time Well - With good
time management, you have time for the things you need to do, and you still
have time for the things you want to do. Step Four: Be Successful in Class -
Be in school on time, every day. Respect others, cooperate, and be responsible.
Talk to your parents about school. Step Five: Take Good Notes - Tests usually
cover material that’s been presented in class. It is, therefore, important to have
good notes from which to study. Step Six: Read Your Textbook - When you
read a textbook, you understand and remember what you read. Scan. Read.
Review. Step Seven: Study Smart - Students who “study smart” find that they
spend less time studying, and yet they get better grades. Step eight: Be a good
test taker - You must study hard and be prepared. Step 9: Reduce Test Anxi-
ety - A little anxiety improves your concentration. Excess worry will lower
your test scores. Step ten: Get Help When You Need It - When you have a
problem, do something to resolve it. Please contact the high school if you
