POST WAR MIGRATION

In Britain

Commonwealth
Commonwealth
immigration, as
mentioned above,
included workers from
Caribbean islands,
India and Pakistan.
There was a very large
number of immigrants
from the
commonwealth, as
many immigrants were
attracted to the
prospect of work, and
starting a new life with
their families.
The nationality act of
1948 States that access
to Britain is free to all
Commonwealth
citizens.

Europe
Aimed primarily at
white Europeans,
including some
German prisoners of
war, many eastern
European refugees (to
escape the communist
regime). There were
also a large amount of
immigrants from Italy
and Ireland.

When WW11 Finished..

..it was apparent that there was a need for reconstruction of the
British empire, however the British were severely short on
builders and labourers. It could do one of two things mainly
to increase the birth rate thus increasing the population, and
also increasing the working force in the near future (however
the redevelopment was needed immediately, to allow
economic growth, as the war had placed a strain economically).
The second more viable option would be for Britain to take
advantage of the fact that they have a common wealth,
whereby they could recruit and lure people in to the UK to
work, with the promises of work and benefits.

!
Due to the increased amounts of immigration from all
over the world, England became very multiracial,
bringing many religions such as Hinduism, Sikhs and
muslims.#

Racism

Although it was only a minority who held racist

attitudes, these attitudes were held nonetheless, and
are still a problem today, whereby policies were based
upon the principle of Keeping Britain White, and
somehow banning all immigration. A survey held
amongst British people revealed that 4/5 people felt
too many immigrants had been let into the country.
Parties such as the BNP still remain in politics to this
day.
This racist view rarely resulted in violence, although in
some occasions, such as at Notting Hill, where 600 whit
males battered their way into black-owned properties.

Why Did Racism

Occur in the UK?
-Bitterness in rise of
rents, which were due
to a readiness of the
black population to
live in cramped
conditions.

-Anger of the whites,

as blacks were willing
to work for a lower
wage than the English
were prepared to do.
This led to many
different reports, and
legislations being
passed including the
Race Relations
Legislation, Anti
Discriminations act,
and others..

The Race Relations Legislation

Introduced in 2000 after the Stephen Lawrence enquiry
of 1999. Held in response to the campaigning of the
black community in relation to the poor investigation.
The report acknowledged the existence of institutional
racism.
Many Race relations acts have ruled out racial
discrimination in the workplace and other areas.

And Now?
Britain is now a multiracial society. Due to the
immigrants, huge contributions have been made to
British society, the British economy and the British
political system. Also, as seen below there is always
more immigration than emigration
